I am soooo glad that I hired Mokoi Masonry for several jobs at two homes in the same neighborhood: 1) 2-tier retaining rock wall, 2) underground 2-pipe drainage system around 3 sides of a house, 3) vinyl fence and lockable gates, 4) small jobs of patching a hole in a concrete wall and leveling an uneven sidewalk area. Here are my praises about hiring Mokoi at every step of the process: --Estimate and Proposal: Owner Viliami Mokoi came to inspect the work to be done, offered his recommendations from his years of experience, and put the specific descriptions of the work to be done in a written proposal (total of 4 proposals), including details I wanted to add, such as locks on the vinyl gates and installing a mailbox in the wall. I tried to obtain estimates from other contractors, but no one else was willing to do all the work such as removing roots and foliage and running underground pipes on all three sides of the house for the drainage system. --Superb Workmanship: I am still admiring the 2-tiered rock walls that are beautiful and solid (see photo). To install the underground drainage system, the crew had to use heavy equipment to excavate the jungle surrounding the house and haul in gravel to cover the pipes. The area is now clear and spacious with a hidden drainage system ready for heavy rain from hurricane and Kona low storms. Manoa rain and worker shortages caused delays in work, but the crew made up time by working hard and fast when they could. During the whole time, Vili texted to me about the progress of the work and promptly answered my questions. I am very pleased with the final products of the built walls and installed drainage system as well the patched concrete wall and leveled sidewalk. --Five Star Clean-Up: The crew hauled out all the piles of debris from the jobs and even swept up. Mokoi Masonry did a great job: Vili worked with me to produce a reasonable, detailed proposal that I could take to my neighbor and discuss the repair on a 25 ' section of our boundary wall. Then BJoe and his team came nearly everyday for a week to demo and rebuild the broken section of wall. First they verified the footing was secure, then they added the required vertical and horizontal fiberglass rebar and made certain it was grouted. After agreeing on a price to concrete an area for a driveway, work started. A couple days later, he tried to tell me I didn't need to concrete as much of an area since I could only fit one car, and I was ok with that, but the next day I thought about it and measured, and realized I could actually fit two small cars. I told him I wanted the original area, at which point he said I needed to pay $1000 more. When I asked if I could pay by credit card, he also said his credit card reader was broken, and he would only take cash. I offered to write a check, and he wanted it made to him directly. And after promising me a receipt for my records, despite numerous texts, he still did not give me a receipt. The job itself was ok. read more

They also pointed out where the ground needed grading to prevent water runoff that was eroding under concrete footings of the house. I asked them to level the ground a bit and move the dirt to support the concrete footings. We were looking to build a new rock wall for us to help protect our house from a stream that floods when it rains hard. We also live in a difficult area where getting in and out and doing the work itself is tricky and limits the amount of heavy machinery that can be used. Couldn't be happier with my new driveway! Vili and I met and discussed the specifics of the property. He laid out a plan and a timeline for completion. I've never before had concrete work done. I had no idea of all the knowledge, expertise, and experience required in concrete masonry work. I was VERY impressed with Vili and his crew at Mokoi Masonry. The subject property is located in Keolu Hills where the streets all have a decent amount of grade. The existing asphalt drive was falling apart. Grass, weeds, and dirt were mixed in throughout the surface. The property has a slope front to back and facing the home left to right. Drainage is a major problem/consideration making sure the water is routed away from the home and the neighbor's yard. The driveway itself is large, greater than 1200 square feet. It required 3 trucks of concrete. Vili performed all the math to get it right. Slope, ensuring the water to flow to a drainage box and pipe to a culvert, and at depth of 6 inches. He calculated how much concrete to order, what kind of concrete, how much rebar, how much wood for frames. I feel like I got a very fair price and hopefully he made a fair profit. Vili's crew worked as a team. They are very professional and when you're working with concrete you can't be in hurry but you can't be slow either. They were smooth and deliberate. The whole job didn't take long to complete, it took about 5 days. Day 1&2 was demo/removal of the existing asphalt driveway and grating. Day 3 was more grating, getting the slope in 2 directions correct (this looked hard), then compacting, putting in rebar, and building the boxes. They grated the driveway to have a very slight slope to channel the water to the corner of the garage where Vili installed the drain box and tubes that lead to the culvert. Day 4 was the pour. Pouring and floating concrete is a real art. It takes so much skill to make it look good....and a lot of experience to make it look great. Day 5 was finishing the drain pipes and clean up. I really enjoy learning how things work. This driveway was a real education for me. I highly recommend Mokoi Masonry DEFINITELY 5 Stars! Oh let me tell you! I called multiple places for quotes and no one wanted to come out. Vili Mokoi answered when I called and came over that day to check out my driveway. He was masked up and safe but did his due diligence and checked on my driveway. Right of the bat he told me of the possibility that my retaining walls might need remediation or that he wouldn't know how much work might be needed to remove what's underneath. My old driveway was in such a poor state that every time it rained my driveway would disintegrated further. He told me that he would work on a quote that day. Later that night he got a price down and then told me of the work involved. We agreed and a week later he brought his crew and started to cut and investigate how deep my driveway went. Apparently the driveway had varying depths of asphalt and a thin veneer of finishing concrete or some subpar concrete. Vili and his crew found the depth they need to go down and kept me in the loop on what's next or when they will come down again. They literally came back on Black Friday too and on that Saturday to finish up the demolition. Today they came and surprised me with a cement truck and look at those results! My God my driveway is brand new and the slope is finally level and going on the right direction! No more are there lumps and bumps and potholes of concrete or asphalt! It's perfect! It was a tricky endeavor as Vili had to work with my fencing company to ensure that the height of the wall matched the height of the new aluminum fencing. They were considerate, personable, and friendly and *kudos* cleaned up the worksite at the end of each day. After removing a 6ft tall x 30 ft wide group of mock orange hedges we began shopping around for quotes to build a rock wall. Mokoi Masonry was one of three contractors we considered using and we chose them based on the thoroughness and competitiveness of their proposal. *It also helped that a trusted friend recommended Vili to us. After hearing our concerns about the location of the utility and plumbing lines, and taking into account the slope of the area (requiring one side of the wall to be 2ft higher than the other in order to be level), Vili provided us with a fair, honest, and reasonable quote for what the project entailed. Vili also personally dropped off the materials and picked out the best rocks for the areas of our wall which would require special configuration to encase the plumbing vent and wall weeps. 3.5 stars, actual. We hired MOKOI Masonry to demo two CMU retaining walls and fence that were cracked/leaning and replace one with moss rock/chain link top and taller one with blue rock. Vili Jr. was quick to respond in person, soon offering an initial quote then contacting us a few days later with a discount to do both projects. They checked out with the state DCCA and RICO plus the BBB and were well-reviewed here. The projects took 7-8 days as proposed with more workers on heavy load days. Both walls seem structurally sound and look good, and we expect them to last and retain the low slope yard and higher slope terrace. Vili asked to start earlier than planned because of a postponed job and we agreed to the staging of supplies/equipment, then later to allow only the demo to begin before I returned from a trip. Instead, the short wall was nearly complete before I saw it and was unable to request adjustments. Some aged parts from the original fencing were reused and there were installation issues with the bottom tension wire and other fasteners. The old top tubes and wire were left behind for us to deal with, along with spatter from the cement toppers/mortar fill on some rock surfaces/edges and ground. Also, we later found a client implement was borrowed and bent for alternative use. The dark stain discussed was never applied. Lastly, a number of small rocks near the base fell out while raking up the remaining debris, presumably because the walls weren't fully grouted as seen in photos provided and a site visit to a recently completed job. While the main wall/fence installations appear solid, there was a lapse in the detail/finish work. I've hired other contractors but this was our first masonry job, and perhaps I should've known more what to clearly ask for in the contract rather than to expect.
