I have experience with clubs in LA and Vegas, but this was my first trip to Miami. It seems like the only way to get in is be a girl who is to be on the list with a promoter or be a guy who has a grand or two to drop on bottle service. Men: DO NOT buy bottle service unless you can afford it. If you're worried you can't afford it, don't go here, because there will prolly be other charges to your bill (from what I've read in the other reviews). Women: Contact a promoter to get in. Be there on time. There was definitely a certain look to the women who got in (aka white and a few latinas) so I mean...that's what they're looking for. For reference, we were four white/Asian women who each have advanced degrees. HEELS MANDATORY for women. I tried to bring in my comfy shoes too, and they said no, so I hid them in a bush and got them on my way out. V classy, I know. My crazy friend was freak dancing at the table we were placed and the person who bought the table was over it and had us sent away, and our promoter took us to the girls/promoters table. I couldn't be my *freaky* self, so had to be my classy self and do boring dancing. We had the appropriate wristbands to get in, but the door guys wouldn't let us in without a 40 dollar cover making the excuse that it was past midnight. Place is nice but small . Good music . It was very busy when we went. Workers are not nice at all . The girls bartenders are not really nice . They take a while to take your order t.When I ask for my check and they gave me my bill and I was told to add the gratuity . I saw a service charge so I ask her if it was already include and she said not that is something that the club charges it. Crazy . I wanted to go so I added it and signed . She didn't give me a print out or anything . My check was $150 for 2 lemon drops and 3 jacks on the rocks . So something else was charge or their drinks are super $$$$. I ask someone later that works there and that person told me their service charge is the tip . Tip is something you gain is not mandatory and you don't ask for it . Since I work in the industry before I always tip very well but I don't think the should be doing this to their costumer. For other reviews I read this has happen before . We went to Mokai on Friday night and we were led to a table full of girls. I wasn't sure what was happening but I wasn't going to complain about not having to pay for drinks. The club itself is small and was fairly crowded around 1am. The music was good and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. From other Yelp reviews, it seems like there are issues with promoters/paying for bottles but since the bottles were already there when we got there, it was definitely not a problem for us. I got in-- so judging by the reviews, I guess that's a good sign? Place looked great on the outside-- inside was kinda small. I didn't have to pay a cover charge and I went straight to the VIP, again, didn't spend one penny. Some guy just kept handing me drinks while I was in the VIP. Music was oldish (90s-2009) hip hop and R&B. I was literally the only black woman in there and all of the black men looked like they wanted me thrown out immediately so shoutout to the Asian guy who invited me into VIP and the white guys responsible for getting me hammered ;-) Overall, the place has potential but the vibe is just very stuck up-- like, more stuck up than LIV. I would not consider this much of a club, more of a lounge. Glad I didn't pay to get in bc I was very disappointed. My bf and I came super early so the place wasn't crowed yet. However this gave me a chance to actually look around. The place is tiny as hell and no main dance floor. You dance in between the booths... Drinks are expensive at $20 a pop. They had cheap looking overstuffed tigers in the vip area. Music was mostly old school hiphop r&b. I couldn't wait to get out so I started yelping other clubs to go to. We left after an hour of standing around. Not going back. Tips: -could not find free parking around so we paid at the machines. We intended on coming here to enjoy the night after we were invited by a host who promotes for other night clubs. Unfortunately, my group and I were not allowed access obviously because of the color of our skin. Our host tried all she could do, and I appreciate it, but the bouncers kept us waiting outside for about an hour giving our host/promoter the run around while other non-black women were granted immediate access. Maybe Mokai should put a disclosure up that says, "Warning: Blatant racism and colorism ahead! Approach at your own risk." Nonetheless, I guess the venue itself is nice... If you come across 510-798-4637 on Instagram.. keep scrolling. They promised me a table, free drinks, and something for my girls 21st birthday. Yes, my group had a bad ratio (4 dudes and 2 girls), but I saw a group of Stanford people get in with the same ratio and they were an ugly group of people with no style. I've never liked this place. 2 years running, and this place has always been the same.... We always walk right up and get right in, but once inside, the place has nothing to offer. It's a square. 1 bar. That's it. It's hard to walk around in there, especially if the place happens to actually have a crowd. There's no feng shuai (sp?) to the venue. It just doesn't flow... And of course, the bathrooms are all the way on the other side, where you have to walk through an obstacle course of VIP tables and people just to get to them. I called prior to leaving the Fountainbleu and the gentlemen over the phone told me cover at the door was $40 for men and women were free. Seriously can't wait till Mokai goes out of business and a new club puts the space to good use, please I beg you don't waste your money here. I had to make a Yelp account just to let other people know the abysmal quality of this place. So where to start.... Tonight I flew in from LA to visit my friends in Miami. I got a call from one of them telling me that they were going to this club called Mokai (this was about 15 minutes after I had landed). "We're getting a table!" "Sounds fun", I said. Boy was I wrong. By the time i had gotten a ride to 23rd Street, they were already inside. I got a text from one of them: "ask for matt and say you're at Person X's table". Great, I thought, this should be easy. Wrong. I tell "Matt" that my friend has a table, but he doesn't seem to care and starts typing away on his blackberry. Time to get more ammo. I tell my friend, who's inside, that I'm having issues. My friend pleads and explains that he just bought $1000 worth of alcohol plus table costs. After he comes out, the bouncer looks at me and says "your shoes aren't nice enough." I called bs, and rightly so, as I saw a few guys wearing tennis shoes waltz right in. Anyways, my friend wasted 10 minutes on a hunt for cheap shoes. I told him it was a waste. He went back inside and I sat waiting for a cab for about a half hour to get back home. These guys have no respect. They don't even care if you drop a grand to buy a table. Not recommended at all. Avoid at all costs. UPDATE: Ok, I am appalled. A couple months after writing this post, Mokai employees harassed Person X (by text), who's name I previously had written here, and asked him to get this post removed. I removed his name, but everything else stands. If you want this post to change, you better treat your customers better. Our last night in Miami, we wanted to go out to celebrate. After the line at Louis at Gansevoort was ridiculously long and choatic, we walked over a block to Mokai. Stood at the ropes until the bouncer said they were up to capacity and to wait a bit. Okay, we'll stand around and bum it a little. Couple walks up and gets in no prob. Wait, but what about them? 'They have reservations.' Okay, fine. Three girls and guy walk up, get in. 'They have bottle service.' Huge group walks up and gets through ropes, no prob. No response. After waiting patiently for a while along with another group of girls (we were waiting politely because it seemed we would get in eventually), we asked the bouncer, why aren't we allowed in? Bouncer replies, 'Honey, never ask why. Don't ever ask why', (Wooah!! Power trip alert!!! Power trip alert!!! Sirens going off!!!) at which point we decide to leave. For starters I AM going to be THAT guy that used to live on the Beach writing a review of a new club/ venue as I view it through the prism of "the ol' days". Not going to really dissect much, but I'll make my points brief. 1st: Mid-July on a Thursday night should NEVER have women waiting in line to get in. It simply doesn't make sense. C'mon. Enough. This isn't the 90s. It's 2012 in a recession and the Beach is dead in the summer. Let the women in and keep it moving. 2nd: If you have some kid wandering around on the Beach handing out "free admission bracelets" to people the very least you can do is allow entry when they arrive. It's silly and the old "bait and switch" are kind of lame. 3rd: When someone arrives and they are on the guest list of the deejay it's kind of important that your "door people" know who the deejay is or cut the cute act of trying to pretend they don't hear you, see you or know who the deejay is. It all is a clear indicator of the sub par experience that will follow. Once inside there were the regular long faces on the women that had to wait to get into a half-empty freezing club. As the night warmed up and they allowed more folks in there was a more festive atmosphere. Let me remind you this isn't the 90s. Just let folks have fun. The stripper decor seemed a bit tacky. But hey, I'm no womanyst. If that's what the kids dig these days who am I to judge. Ultimately as the liquor flowed (yeah, it was $12 for a Heineken) and it got later in the night folks seemed to be having fun. One saving grace was the bartender, Andrew. He was a really nice cat and always wore a smile. Great service from him so I can't blame him for the overpriced beer. I cringe to think what an actual cocktail would have cost. The saving grace was the bartender, some eye candy (the female patrons once they started having a good time) and the music wasn't that bad (standard rap and reggae complete with the occasional deejay yelling over the music). I just wish folks that ran clubs had an understanding of the basic concept that they are to imitate the atmosphere of a bunch of friends - new and old - hanging out and having a good time. There should be no pretension and faux-cool. Fun, fun, fun. That's it. Play some great music. Have some moderately priced alcohol. Get rid of the attitude and have fun. There is a reason that everything has left South Beach and the "scene" is over the bridge. But the come-lately promoters and folks opening clubs now won't grasp that concept, as they hang on to some dying relic. Lighten up and have some fun. read more

My problem with Mokai lies in that there is such little space to dance. It's not a huge space to begin with, but they let in sooo many people on busy nights that it's totally packed, even in the table/VIP areas. When you do find a 2 foot radius to call your own, you'll soon be confronted by the fact you're actually in a walkway and you really can't stand/dance there. If you do stay there you'll get bumped and/or stepped on. Repeatedly. Drinks and bartenders are fine, a little slow usually. Door is a pain unless you know someone or have a table, but this is understandable because of the limited space issue. So if you want to go and get in without a huge line, go early and stick around. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. read more

If I could give it a zero, I would! Guys at the front are pathetic. Especially that fat Asian and Young looking Latin kid... I stayed at '1 Hotel' in South Beach around the corner from Mokai Lounge. When I asked the hotel doorman (Ricky) what was good and brought up Mokai Lounge, he warned me that the people at the front were rude. Keeping an open mind, I went there anyways at midnight on the dot. There was a small group out the front so I asked if any of them worked there and whether or not the place was open. At first no one responded and eventually the 2 men reluctantly told me it opens up around "12ish" Asked if I had reservations, I said "I'm by myself looking to have a couple of drinks. Is there a cover charge?" I asked this question 3 times before the guy I was asking, looked at me and then completely ignored me and went back to talking to the girls. That's when I decided to go to LIV!! I've been rejected before, and I know it's Miami so some of these clubs have some sort of reputation to uphold. I worked backstage at Miami Fashion Week Swim this year and one of the designers I worked for was having her after party at Mokai. We weren't up to it but just wanted to give it a shot anyway. So two of my friends and I walked up and saw a bunch of people grouped up trying to get in. Thank god we didn't have a problem with the rope at all because those that were there were getting verbally torn apart by this short guy at the rope. He would've got his teeth knocked out. My first impression once I get inside...WTF Why are there so many tables?!?! I don't know, I've just never heard of a club that doesn't have a dancefloor. Literally no room to dance. So we decided to sit down at a table cause, I don't know, we thought we were just supposed to do but the moment we sat down we were told to either get up or buy a bottle, which started at $350. Ummm....no. So now we're standing at the bar and I order my drink, a Heineken. My jaw dropped when he told me it was $12! For a Heineken! A Heinekennnnnnn! I hand him my card and then he told me there was $50 minimum for me to use it. What? By the look on my face he gave me the nastiest look and just told me to go to the ATM. The ATM fee is $8. WHAT? So I was upset cause I didn't even feel like drinking to begin with and just took $28 bucks out of my account to pay for a $12 beer. The dj was some woman who was obiviously playing some pre-made set from her iTunes playlist of really horrible "indie-dance" music. I'm pretty liberal when it comes to "artistic expression", but the decor of this club definately fosters the exploitation of women and serves as a gallery of fetish pornography. I'm pretty sure when the interior designer decided on a theme, it was "date rape". The music is "eh", I don't know why they encourage throwing napkins, OR the giant fog horn that will leave your ears ringing for days, but if you would like the opportunity to sit on a swing suspended from the ceiling or dance with a midget in a scary bunny costume, then this place is for you. This review is for New Years Eve Dec. 31 2015-16!! "Open bar" till 1am. $100 for guys and around $50 for girls. The place was extremely over crowded until the "open bar" ended. The girls "bar tending" were very unprofessional, they were asking for tips (in a rude way, not playfully) before even serving the drinks and were purposely ignoring people trying to get their attention at the bar. It's not like they were busy serving other customers, oh no! They were taking selfies, pouring drinks on each other, anything but paying attention to the customers. Their attitude was horrendous, even beyond the typical Miami nightlife rudeness. Also, the drinks were VERY weak, (but that's pretty typical for open bars). Most of our group got into this club on a Saturday night. They let 6 of us in and kept 2 of us out (2 men). The bouncers were definitely douches. We went outside after we got in, my hubby got overheated and needed a little fresh air, and it was pretty hilarious to watch what was going on at the front door. People were definitely being ignored by the bouncers. Other ridiculousness ensued. They let us right back in though when we reentered the club. The music was fairly good, but the place was pretty packed and the dance floor is very small. The drinks from the bar were sooooo weak, I wasn't sure if there was vodka in my vodka redbull, and way overpriced. I could buy a small bottle of Greygoose for the amount they charged me for a thimble-sized amount. The women in the club were all wearing the exact same dress, in various colors, with the exact same hairstyle. (Myself and my party excluded.) Funny stuff. My friends and I got in, no cover, on a Monday night right away (so that's another plus I suppose), as we were told it was the place to go in SoBe on Monday. Well dressed, very attractive (seemingly local?) crowd - but it got way too crowded and there is NOWHERE TO STAND. It's like a tables only club. Everywhere I stood and tried to dance I felt like I was in the way. People were kind of pushy as well - everyone seemed like they were too cool for school, which is probably to be expected of an exclusive club, but nonetheless, obnoxious. Maybe I'd have a different opinion if I had been at a table, but it was so annoying not being able to dance anywhere. I would not bother with this club. My husband and I were very polished and clearly the best looking people in line. Door man let every punk in for free and then when he opened the rope for us he saw $ signs and wanted to charge us $30 per person. Short sited on his part because if we had decided to go in we would have dropped $$ on lots of drinks. But we refuse to pay $60 to walk through the door. We would have turned up the quality level a notch in there but I saw very young hoochies going in and thats not the typ e of people we were interested in meeting. We went on a good night as Troy Ave was performing. A promoter invited us to party in the VIP section with free unlimited drinks. The club itself was relatively small but air conditioned so you won't have to worry about sweating as you dance to the music, which was mostly hip hop and some edm. From all the other reviews it seems like everyone had a bad experience whether it was the racists bouncers or bad promoters. I think the only reason why we had it easy was because we were lucky or because we are small asian girls. But our promoter was also awesome and attentive to our text messages and when getting us in. I love Mokai it is a little small but it's a good club. I recommend going on weekends like Friday or Saturday the dj js good and plays club bangers. I'm giving it 4 stars because I use to go to Mokai 2-3 years ago before the whole horse thing and it use to always be super packed when I would go now on some days it takes maybe an hour or 1.5 for the club to fill up. We always get there at 12:30 that's when everyone shows up. I recommend going with a promoter especially if you're a girl because they'll take care of you. If you want to buy a section a promoter is great as well because they will have girls in your section so it's not empty af. !!!!MOKAI BARTENDERS ARE SCAMMERS!!!!! One of the promoters' girls recommend me Mokai... just saying I have huge experience with LA, LV and NYC night clubs like TAO group. BUT I'VE NEVER HAD THE WORST EXPERIENCE THAN IN MOKAI!!! It was my BIRTHDAY!!!! I was with two friends. My male friend doesn't care how much drinks. However, it was my birthday and I didn't wanna that he spends a lot of money. For T H R E E long islands he paid $70. She poured some bullshit from ONE BOTTLE ADDED ICE and gave to us!!! If you're drinker with big experience, you know there is Vodka +Rum+Gin+Tequila and Cola. She should at least poured FOUR different bottles to my glass! When I asked- what is this?! She is showing this BOTTLE with hand-writed sign "long island" I was like and MOKAI IS UPSCALE NIGHT CLUB, ARE U SURE???! We wanna have fun because it's my birthday, so we laughed and asked her to exchange to Vodka+Redbull. Now let's think logically $70 divide by 3= 23.33333 dollars?!
