La Embajada La…read moreEmbajada is an Argentine Steakhouse, mobile kitchen and catering venture in Dayton, Ohio, that specializes in Argentinean, Italian and Spanish cuisine - nearly fine dining. We arranged to arrive ten minutes early in order to converse with Mónica Fabregat. Well worth the planning and effort. Mónica was delighted to learn that we have visited Argentina and experienced the people, cuisine, beauty, and various wineries. I had to ask Monica if she had visited Bariloche. Bariloche is located in the foothills of the Patagonian Andes on the southern shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake, near the border with Chile. Aspen, Colorado, is the most frequent U.S. city comparison for Bariloche due to its shared identity as a premier, upscale mountain resort destination. Both cities are famous for high-end skiing, luxury lodges, and a sophisticated, "ritzy" atmosphere that attracts wealthy international travelers. Beyond Aspen, Bariloche is often compared to other U.S. mountain and outdoor-centric locations for different reasons. Monica explained that "Argentine cuisine is primarily the union of food from our two biggest immigrant populations, Spain and Italy," Throughout the menu, Spanish and Italian influences are easy to spot, from espresso, pastas and flatbreads to empanadas, Argentine sausages and chorizos. La Embajada is a small, nicely decorated, pleasant restaurant - Qualifies as a Date Night with your wife, and my wife greatly approves. Service is excellent. YELP is always a must consult for us, and folks have consistent posted 5 Star reviews. We always take care to download the menu prior to dining. The Dictator Steak caught my eye the previous night, and I asked Monica which steak she recommends. Her reply was the Dictator Steak - a 30 day aged Ribeye. Difficult to find a 30 day aged Ribeye in the Dayton market. Monica then offered a nice Cabernet Sauvignon; I immediately declined and Monica smiled - she then offered a Malbec. Sorry, I forget the label, but very often we order a Malbec rather than a Cabernet Sauvignon. The single flaw (not the restaurant's doing) was the appearance of 14 young parents and very young children without reservations.... Folks do some minimal research - No one suddenly appears at an upscale restaurant in a group this size without reservations. During our three week Overseas Adventure Travel visit, we experienced a winery every day, and we came to favor Malbec. Malbec is a dark, full-bodied red wine grape known for its deep color and rich, fruity flavors like plum and blackberry, with notes of vanilla, cocoa, and tobacco, especially when aged in oak. Originally from France, where it's a key Bordeaux blending grape, it has become the signature grape of Argentina, thriving in high-altitude vineyards and producing wines with soft tannins and balanced acidity, making it a classic pairing for grilled meats like steak. My wife specified the Mixed Grill and the Seafood Bowl; Paella-style rice with shrimp, mussels, calamari and octopus. Of course, our plan was to enjoy "leftovers" at home, and we did. I observed to Monica that often in Buenos Aires steak restaurants place a live fire BBQ with steak in the front window; she knew about this and replied this would violate fire code in US. She observed these were higher priced restaurants for tourist, and I agreed. I found in Buenos Aires, by walking a few blocks, a similar menu was available for 50% less. Caveat: Go to La Embajada as soon as possible and do visit Bariloche when in Argentina.
