What a great experience! I've been straightening/blowing out my hair since I can remember but it never quite looked right. During the pandemic I skipped using heat tools a few times and was like: wait, is my hair curly? It sure is. But every time I get it cut and then let it go natural, the layers are wonky and it gets super frizzy. Decided it was time to get a curly cut and wanted a place that specialized. Enter Moisture Salon. I showed up for my appointment with about a minute to spare (there was a road closure and I don't think I've ever been to Schenectady before so that was fun), parked in a lot a few blocks away and walked over. The signage is clear and cute. Greeted by two friendly doggos, Jenny and Chichi. Brooke introduced herself and took me back where she looked at my hair and asked tons of questions. First, she cut my hair dry and talked to me about some of my concerns and we discussed my constant state of "am I or am I not growing in my gray." I think I am. When she washed my hair she really showed me how much buildup there was and then used a shampoo made for people with hard water before feeling the difference again. Yikes! She had me bed over and watch how she applied products into my hair and all the different amounts and processes. It was so helpful. She also taught me a trick for getting my curls to be a little more bouncy at the top of my head, where they are often kind of stretched out. At the end, I had far more definition and bounce and was handed a microfiber towel, clips and a helpful card to help me get used to how to take care of my hair. It's two days later and it still looks great. Looking forward to a 4-month check in to see if it's more moisturized. Brooke and Ron are great and I've definitely found the right place for me! Moisture Salon must be running out of clients because they clearly have nothing better to do than play PARKING LOT PATROL. I pulled into one of their clearly labeled spots because the person I was with literally went inside to ask about prices -you know, like a potential customer. Not even two minutes later, this girl (pictured below) struts out and says, "Hello, do you mind moving? My client is behind you!" I politely said, "No problem, the person I'm with is inside asking questions." She says "thank you" and then, without skipping a beat, walks right in front of my car and takes a picture of my license plate. When I asked, "Why are you taking a picture of my car?" she actually said, "I'm sending it in so you can get a ticket." Be for real. You're mad at me for waiting in a parking space for someone who's literally inside your salon asking about your prices? I've never seen customer service this petty. Like, girl, maybe focus on your clients' hair instead of trying to get strangers ticketed. The energy was so unprofessional, so unnecessary, and honestly just plain mean. If this is how they treat people who show genuine interest in their business, I can only imagine what it's like once they actually have your money. So yeah ... if you're thinking about coming here, think twice unless you're into bad vibes, bad attitudes, and bonus parking tickets. Because Moisture Salon? I run a curly hair Facebook group called Consciously Curly and Ron has slandered my name because he says that I stole the information that I learned through my appointments with him. That I PAID for. He has threatened his clients that are also friends with me and in my Facebook group. He is just not kind in any way, shape or form. I was 12 minutes late for a haircut for my daughter. I called at our appointment time to let him know there was traffic. He didn't answer. As per all the similar reviews, he was rude to my poor daughter when she entered and almost made her cry. She realized pretty immediately that he has major issues to work through so was able to compose herself. He refused to cut her hair because he "couldn't see her curl pattern" but the kinky-coily cut she was scheduled for was for that- KINKY hair. I think he was uncomfortable with using the singular cutting technique in his repertoire on her hair. I was amenable to the idea that we should leave as he stated he "couldn't cut her hair". We gladly left as we were asked to and charged for a no-show. I will be disputing or suing Ron if the money isn't refunded. Listen to the reviews. He will show you who he is if things don't go as he likes. Good for him for setting boundaries but he should do so in a more empathetic, professional and mature manner. Best of luck to you, Ron. My overall experience at Moisture Salon was fantastic start to finish. I live out of town and I was desperate for a cut. Due to COVID I have not been able to get to a salon for over a year. My hair was droopy, lifeless and needed to be reshaped and I wanted some bounce back. My hair is very wavy with some larger loose curls , it's that in between sort of hair that isn't straight but isn't super curly. If I don't have a nice shape it looks like a lifeless, poofy mess. If you are concerned about COVID precautions they are well in place here. You don't have to worry about feeling safe. I arrived a few minutes early and waited just outside in the car as I was instructed to and Ron waved me in when he was ready for me. Ron was personable, supportive and encouraging. I really enjoyed the conversation. I was ready for an update and he eased me into it gently. My hair has a life to it again and I got exactly what I asked for. He listened to my concerns , my preferences and my goals. I made sure to communicate well and I left nothing up to interpretation. I believe this is essential when you are sitting in the chair in any salon. Stylists aren't mind readers, you are partnering with the person doing the cutting, so it is essential that you express your needs, preferences and concerns for the best outcome! Don't like a lot of product ? Say so ! Want something easy to style? Tell the person cutting your hair! Ron took his time with me , he cut my hair curl by curl. My cut was dry with no wash due to COVID precautions which was fine with me. I prefer to do my own styling at this point in my curly hair life lol. This would be a great place to learn how to care for your curly hair if you are new to the game as Ron is a master stylist. There are different levels of deva certified stylists and he is at the highest level. He also has been affiliated with curly hair artistry as a teacher training others how to provide services for curly haired people. If you are looking for an expert you have found the right person in Ron and the right salon right here. Everyone at the salon was friendly and incredibly nice. The environment was cozy and comfortable and the actual salon was immaculate. There are some great product lines available at the salon ,and I asked for recommendations for specific products to achieve my hair goals. I purchased two products and both are exactly what I wanted them to be. I am not new to caring for my curly hair, I started the whole curly girl method nearly 20 years ago when the naturallycurly.com website was thriving and we were all figuring it out together. Now there are people on every social media platform selling you hundreds of different products and charging you lots of money for their "tips" and their "methods" and the curly hair world has become saturated by people who are self appointed experts. The only "training" they have is watching others or reading tips from trained professionals who have worked hard to get where they are. It's fine to give advice and share through your own trial and error , we all learn this way but I think once you start charging people for these things it changes the whole game. I am saying this because I see negative reviews here and I suspect some are from people who are part of that community and having visited this salon myself my experience was in line with exactly what I expected. Not sure if the people who had bad experiences didn't communicate their goals or had unrealistic expectations or were a little entitled or overly sensitive? I see one person here who gave a bad review and seemed in denial about paying a late cancellation fee ...it's on the website? Time is money here would you want to have a client cancel on you or just forget they booked? This is a complete lack of respect. Would you do that to a Dr or anyone else who has a busy schedule ? Another complains of the owner being upset that they shared info in their FB group. I wonder if they gave credit or mentioned where they got the info they shared or asked if this was ok? Isn't this common courtesy? Maybe asking for permission would have been more respectful ? When did the world of curls become so cut throat? It seems like everyone wants to start their own group or be an expert and earn a living doing this now. I think the people who went to school and trained for years , have stood on their feet cutting hair and educated others for years have every right to be annoyed by people who decide to make groups and sell classes with no grunt work and proper training and no acknowledgement of where the information or tips came from. I've been going to Ron for 2 years and he is amazing. I mean why complain If you only have to go 2 times a year!! Yes you do have to wash your hair and make sure detangled which isn't a big deal like some have complained. He is very knowledgeable and friendly. I don't understand bad reviews. I would not recommend this salon to anyone. The owner of the salon, Ron lacks basic communication skills, professionalism, and compassion. I showed up to my appointment "unprepared" according to Ron's standards. I was still charged the 150 dollars for the visit even though the only thing Ron did was take my hair out of my bun and pick at it a little while he belittled me. He is a condescending individual on a power trip who enjoys talking down to his clients and making them feel stupid for making mistakes. He did not offer to reschedule and continued muttering rudely under his breath as I left the salon frustrated. After collecting myself; I called the salon back and was sent to voicemail where I informed them that I did not see where the policies stated clients would be charged full price for showing up unprepared. I received two extremely unprofessional and disrespectful email back from Ron where he showed me my mistake. While Ron may have been right, his nonsensical policies are his way of thieving clients out of their money. If you are not prepared to his standards, he can just send you away. I decided to share my experience with Ron after reading so many of these reviews by people who have had similar experiences with him. This man Ron is an arrogant, rude, nasty business owner. He yelled at my wife and insulted her before kicking her out of his salon. He provided no service to her and still charged her credit card, after refusing the $150 gift card she had for his business. When I tried to call and confront him about how he treated my wife, he started yelling at me, being very condescending and swearing at me. Please be aware and STAY AWAY from this man. My wife is not alone in this, and we know a dozen other women with this experience. Look at how he responds to all the one star reviews on here...Very unprofessional. My wife did everything in your insane policy page and put her hair in a bun for 5 min while she drove to your business. You state you can only cut hair under very specific conditions, which sounds like you are unwilling to help clients and instead give yourself the option to belittle and harass them when you feel you can't just throw some product in and make it look good. Also there is the issue of charging her credit card when she had a gift card she wanted to pay with (even though you charged for performing 0 services). It is an unethical business practice, especially to make your clients sign an agreement before coming into your shop, that can NOT be signed without putting credit card information in. Very unethical. BBB has been notified and a group of people with similar experiences have already been gathered to document their visit. Not worth the cost! I had hoped for a great cut from professionals who actually knew how to accentuate my natural curls. Brooke was nice enough, yet, my cut was not layered sufficiently. As a result my curls were limp unless I used a large amount of styling gel. I have received far better cuts at a far more reasonable price than the $80 I paid. They also sell you hair products which are expensive, claiming these are necessary to maintain your curls. Total nonsense! I feel they value their services far more than they are worth, as evidenced by taking a credit card number with the understanding that you will be charged if you miss an appointment. I got my hair cut here and it was fine. That's it. Fine. Nothing life-changing or awe-inspiring. Ron is definitely an abrasive personality, and has no shortage of self-esteem, but that's not the reason I was a one-time customer (Brooke cut my hair, but in such a small salon you can't help but hear him). I like to wear my hair curly and straight and was treated to a lecture about the dangers of straightening my curls (or even brushing my hair after a shower) and was given a book about curly hair care to study during my drying time (it seemed less optional and more like required reading). In line with not believing in brushing hair, they detangle your freshly-washed hair by hand - this is not for the faint of heart; I've given birth and still had tears coming to my eyes (the automatic kind like when you get hit on the nose). Look, hair is supposed to be fun and I go to a salon to unwind, not to be scolded. I left with my hair looking less than its best (but praised by all the staff in an emperor's new clothes kind of way) and ended up with an odd plateau in my layers, but again, it wasn't terrible, just not a relaxing experience or worth $85. read more

I was recommended to Ron by a friend of mine. I was apprehensive having my hair cut when dry and curly, but her hair looks fantastic so I took a chance. Ron took his time cutting my hair and what a difference! I began using the Deva products and my hair isn't dry and crunchy like it used to be when I was using Tigi products. Had my initial cut yesterday. Walking in, my hair was the *hottest* mess as it's super thick with a couple of different curl/hair textures going on. Not to mention the top layer is so straight from pulling it into a braid/ponytail almost daily since it's summer. Add to that, I hadn't had it cut in 4 months! Blech! Anyway--Ron tamed the rat's nest on top of my dome, gave explicit direction on how to properly maintain it and, best part of all, gave me great hair and HOPE that with time and diligence, my curls will become more uniform. (The gross straight part on top can be coaxed to become more like the beautiful curls that lie beneath.) I'm sure that there will be a learning curve, a period of trial and error, and it will take some serious self control not to want to pull the straighter limp stuff back but I re-booked and can't wait to see Ron's instruction pay off!! ***sidenote: as someone who has to maintain credentials for their profession, and also has to combat other professionals that claim to know what I know without a fraction of the education I've gone through---I completely respect Ron's dedication to his "craft" through frequent continuing education on how to maintain curly hair. Do not go here. Ron, the owner, is either a bad person or was just in a foul mood for a week. I booked an appointment with his apprentice, Brooke, because Ron was booked out for six months (I would later learn he will not take new clients). Brook was fine and gave a pretty good haircut. However, I asked for facial framing and layering, and she ignored me. I was sick and not very cognizant, so I sent a message to the salon the next day apologizing for being out of it and thanking them for the hair. I had asked to be scheduled with Ron next time while I was there, and in his response email he stated he was not accepting new clients and wanted me to book with Brooke only, which was odd because he agreed to it the day before. I followed up by asking about how no one gave me any feedback when I showed a reference picture and asked for facial framing, and he wrote some very snide and rude things back to a customer. He threatened to cancel my appointment with Brooke. I then apologized, said I meant no offense, an inquired about the difference between a men's cut and a women's cut, as I was quoted a much lower price than I was charged. He refunded some of my money because I was apparently charged for a women's cut. There's no difference. He just charges women more, and cancelled my appointment. I have an email transcript of all of this. Do not go see this sexist man. Especially do not go if you are genderqueer or identify as something but typically pass as something else. Finally! Someone who knows how to STYLE, not just CHOP, curly hair! I had forgotten what a difference a great CUT can make. Ron also gave me some excellent pointers on how to care for my "senior" hair. Best of all, Ron is not all about selling product. He was about making my hair NATURALLY beautiful. I made a appointment for a new customer dry cut $110. I was so excited. My hair is very dry and frizzy. Ron just clipped the tips of my hair off. He barely cut anything off. Then he washed it and left a lot of conditioner in. He put a lot of gel in then stuck me under the dryer. After my hair was dried he took a picture of it and posted it on he site. I went home with stiff hair, hair pins, small towel the kind you buy from advance auto to clean your car and 3 very small 2 oz bottles of hair produtcts. He charged me $190. I woke up the next day with hair that felt like cardboard. My hair was exactly the same as it always was. Don't waste your money. Order the hair products online. read more

I would never recommend going to this place ever again. I just received a phone call today about an appointment I made for daughter in May of this year (5 months ago) and I totally had forgotten about it. I explained to the receptionist that I had forgotten and if I could reschedule and she states that there would be a fee for that and that they sent me an Email last week. (I also told not everyone checks there email and that calling would've of been a better reminder) I tell them I'm going through some financial hardship right now and that I wouldn't be able to reschedule then. 10 min later the owner calls me cursing me out and telling me never to call his place of business and that it's not his problem about my financial hardship. I definitely understand he is trying to run a business but to call and be rude and disrespectful on the phone is unbelievable. I had a terrible experience with the owner, Ron, and I will not return. On the morning of my appointment there was unexpected snow and the driving conditions were not good. I was coming from over an hour away and did not feel comfortable driving that distance in wet snow so I called to reschedule. Ron was very annoyed and combative on the phone and said he would charge me anyway and that I shouldn't have made an appointment during the winter. This is a very expensive salon - $95 for a haircut, an amount I cannot afford to pay twice. Against my better judgement I decided to drive in so as not to pay for nothing. The conditions were terrible on the roads the nearer I got to Schenectady - school had been cancelled due to the snow, there were warning signs on the thruway, visibility was poor, a car had gone off the road. Worst of all, I am very unhappy with my cut - the stylist was not able to do what I asked, which was to keep my hair from falling over my eyes and face and it looks as messy as it did before. I will not be giving my money to a business that is so inflexible in its cancellation policy and has so little regard for the safety of their clients. I was excited to finally get a good curly hair cut (so I thought). Went to Ron for my cut which I was about a 3 out of 10 for satisfactory as he said that this is a process. I made another appointment for color 2 weeks later since he convinced me that my hair has been fried and needs to be treated with color only on the roots. My hair looks no different with the color he did. I am not happy with the cut or the color and requested him to make the highlights lighter. He was totally unprofessional and hung -up on me and did not want to help me with my hair. I would never recommend him and find his salon over rated. Save some money and go somewhere else! So after reading some of the other reviews on here, I feel it's a blessing in disguise I didn't end up actually letting them touch my hair. What I actually ended up doing, was calling 911, after owner Ron and a very large, aggressive female chased me out of the salon, down the street, calling me foul names and threatening to punch my lights out. The female went so far as to put her hands on me. All because I had neglected to arrive with my hair exactly as they wanted it, which is down, "in it's natural state." When I got upset because he told me I don't follow directions and they couldn't possible cut my hair but were going to charge me anyway, he became very snide and loud and told me to get the Eff out of his salon. Ron is the master of curly hair!! I have been searching in the capital region for someone who understands my hard to manage hair and he is the real deal. I've been going to Ron for a few years now and am so happy. He is very patient and takes the time to show you how to use the products he recommends and how to style your hair. He's got a great personality and sense of humor. Since meeting Ron, my hair is softer, less frizzy, needs to be cut less often & has very few dead ends. Terrible customer service. I waited for almost a year to schedule an appointment at this place. I finally got mine on July 5th and I took a half day off at work just for this. I was on my way to the salon when I received an email saying I need to reschedule the appointment as Ron is sick. I completely understand that they dont want the customer to get sick as well but they should have minimum courtesy to accommodate them in another schedule. The lady who called me couldn't care less. I will be direct and to the point with this. DO NOT TAKE THE ABUSE. Somehow, it appears that my former review was removed. I was a loyal customer, but on my 4th or 5th appointment, Ron refused to cut my hair. He did not approve of the products I had in my hair. When I explained that I could not spend a lot on hair products, I was belittled. (The appointment prior, when I also stated that I did not want to spend a lot on products, Ron asked about my purse, he asked what kind of car I drove and he asked about my house.) He also told me several times he wouldn't cut my hair because it was "disgusting." I ABSOLUTELY PROMISE. my hair was clean - washed and conditioned hours before, neat, untangled, dry and curly. He just did not like the products I had used, and berated me for using them and FLAT OUT REFUSED to cut my hair. I left embarrassed and in tears. I had taken vacation time from work to get the appointment and had waited weeks for it, and I left with NO HAIRCUT!! AFTER the appointment, Ron posted about how he turned me away on his Facebook page! I got a better hair cut, kinder service, and it even was less expensive at Rumors Salon in Latham, where they have several very talented Deva Curl specialists. Ron trained and worked at the Devachon in NYC under the tutelage of Lorraine Massey. I've gone to the SOHO Devachon twice before Ron, and was very happy, but am thrilled and feel lucky to have Ron's Moisture Salon right in Schenectady. Ron has cut and styled my varied textures of curls, two times. The front section of my hair has tight, spirally curls(corkcicelli). The next section has a little larger curl and the back mostly is loose or wavy. Both times Ron cut it, I've been happy. The second time, I asked him to help me with the back of my hair that barely curls and gives me fits. Ron cut it in a way that disguises that wicked, rebellious section and made me so happy with the cut. He also showed me tricks to optimally style.
