It's ginormous in size, light-tasting and has a balanced proportion of olives to dough. Making it properly is difficult, hence the saying: "il ne faut pas brûler la fougasse"! The pain au chocolate is right in there, too. I've had some of their breakfast plates but haven't been as wowed by them. An easy-going, communal atmosphere is found within. What a gem! My Mom and my Grandma are on the East Coast so I visit often and every time I do I'm here every couple days picking up delicious breads, bagels and pastries & drinking a coconut milk latte and eating yogurt parfaits for breakfast! I make sourdough on the West Coast and it makes me feel so good to feed my family sourdough that is as good if not better on the East Coast! I stumbled upon this restaurant while looking up recommended places to get breakfast in Chestertown. After wandering around the Chestertown farmers market we popped in for breakfast. This restaurant is health conscious and offers scratch-made foods. I love that all ingredients are sourced locally and the meals are made fresh. That being said, it is clearly a local favorite. As the line often spills out the door. You order up at the front and food runners bring you trays to your table. There are lots of tables out back but I'd recommend getting there early to secure seating. The interior is clean and service was quite friendly. I got the MSAK breakfast sandwich on a bagel. It was the best bagel I have ever eaten. The sandwich is small but I enjoyed every last bite. I regret not buying a dozen bagels to take home with me! You also can't go wrong with any of their pastries, we enjoyed a variety of them. If you're in the area you definitely have to check this place out! read more

The scratch made concept and caring workers seems obvious in this place. Was nice to visit, could use bigger portions or lower prices. Some context... ...I stopped in with my kids and we ordered 3 sandwiches, 1 beer, and it was $65 before tip. (and it's an order at the counter place.) Now, to be fair one of the sandwiches had the side of soup option for $3.50 and one of the sandwiches had meat added. But, after tip we did pay over $75 for three sandwiches and left hungry. It seems like the Paninis were the go-to sandwich of the day. It was very good, could have used more meat/cheese to fill it out. The focaccia caprese was good, but also seemed like I was paying full price for half a portion. I do get that making things from scratch and paying a living wage to your employees costs money... just fill out the plates with the less expensive ingredients. Or just make the sides bigger if it costs too much to make the sandwiches larger. . That said.... Super friendly. Cute place. Great draft beer option (they just had 1). We saw coffees come out and they looked like normal sizes at normal coffee shop prices. Will come back to try the breakfast/brunch menu. read more

Walk inside Modern Stone Age Kitchen, you you'll feel like family. Each staff member remembers customers and creates a space to be seen. It's powerful to watch. On top of that, the entire restaurant is missional. Started by a husband-wife team (both former educators), they use ancestral food traditions to make quality, whole, nutritious food. Born out of the pandemic, Modern Stone Age Kitchen is one of the few places in Chestertown open Mondays. After dining there, here's my experience. 1) Food: Walk inside the main storefront and it feels like a bakery with sourdough bread baking and fresh pastries behind a glass display. For a snack, order the fig and cheese croissant. For lunch, I ordered the seasonal kimchi grilled cheese sandwich with a side of butternut squash soup. Both were full of flavor. In fact, they make their own cheese in house too. (They make all the ingredients except for Old Bay and chocolate.) 2) Drinks: They have a special blend of coffee with Rise Up, kombucha, tea, and other options. The lavender lemonade was refreshing and not too sweet. 3) Space: There's indoor and outdoor seating. They also have a little bed and breakfast for those in their network on the campus. 4) Story: The owners are very kind people with many talents. They are usually there and more than willing to chat. Bill, the husband, was on a Nat Geo show and authored a helpful book. For him and his wife Christina, the entire business is missional, helping people eat well and nutritiously. Modern Stone Age Kitchen is a nice place with outdoor seating. I had the Hummus sandwich which was tasty but it could have had a bit more greens on it. With one leaf of lettuce and one slice of tomato and some hummus I felt it was a bit heavy on the bread. I did like the vegan option, however, I had ordered the fermented potato chips as a side and found out that they were fried in tallow! I guess I should have paid more attention to the little signs next to everything. When I mentioned this I was given a side of fermented carrots. I do a lot of fermenting at home and bake sourdough bread. Maybe that's why I wasn't overly impressed. I bought a sourdough bread from the bakery when we were done with lunch; it was the most expensive bread I've ever bought at $10 - good but no whole grain bread. read more

They have a variety of drinks to choose from, including Georgian amber wine! So tasty! I ended up getting a pretzel. It came with some spicy mustard and the combination was perfect. My companion got a roast beef sandwich and I tried it and it was so delicious. The bread is absolutely divine. The staff are friendly and helpful. The experience was cheery and warm. This is one of our favorite spots in C-town. Especially when we can sit outside. We had lunch today which was excellent. We ordered the chicken salad sandwich with fermented potato chips and the roast beef sandwich with cole slaw. Both were excellent. We also had a bottle of white wine. The wine selection is very limited (2 choices) but it was very good. We brought our dog with us and she loved the patio. They have cooking classes which I really want to do! This place never disappoints me. I always try to get something new when I go. I always get a pretzel but they only make so many so I didn't get one recently. I love anything sourdough because of this place and my sensitivity stomach appreciates it. I finally tried the chicharrones as a side with my sandwich and they were so good I ordered some to go. There are two outstanding bakeries in Chestertown. Each has its own distinct vibe and products. But they are both worth visiting and enjoying. Modern Stone Age has a somewhat wider variety of choices, with fresh sandwiches, sweets, some pastries and a variety of breads. They can make you a cup of coffee essentially any way you want it. They use Rise Up beans that are made especially for them. Their breads are really excellent with some specialty breads made only several days a week. Friday from 4-6 is pizza night. We didn't get to try the pizza but in speaking with other customers, they said it is fantastic. The staff are patient, helpful and very informative. They kept a bread for me so that I could pick it up the next day. There are some tables inside where you can eat. But the tables outside are in a space that's outstanding. This is an excellent choice for a lighter lunch, sandwich drink and pastry when in Chestertown. read more

I love bakeries. Modern Stone Age kitchen is one of few I make it a point to swing through for. I've tried most of their artisan breads and many of the treats. All were well executed. I've also had a number of their sandwiches and pizzas. Their chicken salad is my absolute favorite. Staff is SO nice. Oh, and last time I was there, they had apple cider donuts that were better than any I've ever had. And I've had a LOT.... Stop by and pick up lunch and a sourdough to go! read more

I got a Roast Beef sandwich on house made barley rye bread, served with young provolone and a delicious horseradish cream sauce and served with hand made tortilla chips. It was yummy. I wrote a review about this place several months ago and am back again to talk about the people AND the unwaveringly excellent products. We love finding a place that has our health in mind. As I wrote in a previous review, the intentionality in everything at MSAK is high quality. We enjoy it so much that we drive there a few times each month - about 1.25 hours each way- to get our fix. Chestertown is an amazing destination- a community of people who work together to provide a big welcome- through markets, clean and beautiful places to walk along their streets, trails, and waterfront areas, and collaborative events where everyone plays a part in making traditions come alive. Every time we walk into MSAK we are greeted with familiar smiling faces- people who are genuinely glad to see us whether we arrive as they open their doors or are at the end of a long day (most commonly for us the latter!) The atmosphere they create is infectious, and though there is often a line, it doesn't take long before the people waiting strike up conversations that add to the ambience and make the wait time fly by, sometimes resulting in continued conversation around one of their communal tables after ordering something that is sure to be delicious. Creating an environment like that is not about one or two people behind the baked goods and register who are just downright friendly and fun (though they are!) Sustaining something like that every day is about what is happening at the core of it all- caring for each other on a mission of caring for others. We have been there enough to say that it's a part of the experience EVERY time. And that's a rare find. We were there on a Sunday during a holiday weekend right after a town wide festival the day before. I asked one of the staff how it went and she said they were running on fumes be the end of the day with no real chance to stop because they were so busy. She said it with a smile on her face and others around her nodded in agreement, proud of how they navigated the especially busy weekend together. It's part of a culture that makes them one of the most welcoming and productive teams I've ever seen. If you follow them on social media, you will see that on their birthdays, they are presented with a specially crafted cake or confection that is just for them. Even the trek from the main baking kitchen across the way into the restaurant with pastries is a celebrated event marked with a bit of fun. When someone on the team is celebrating, everyone shares in the excitement. At their core, this is a place of caring, welcome, and intentionality. We always leave with bellies and bags full of food we feel good about. And we keep coming back for all of that. read more

Very very busy on the Saturday we stopped in (I wonder if they're getting a bump from Sam's departure from the Main Street area?) and it took quite some time to order and get sandwiches (only one register). The bread is delicious, really above and beyond. It's on the spendier side for counter service/clear your own table but probably due to their value-based business commitment, which is admirable. Lots of locals coming in for coffee, bagels, bread and lunch, which was great to see. Anyone complaining about price doesn't understand what they are offering at MSAK. My father and I are taking the sourdough class that is offered by Bill and his staff and had breakfast there this morning. All of the staff is friendly and accommodating, the coffee was fantastic as well. They offer a wide variety of in house made goods ranging from sourdough pizza dough to fermented ketchup and ever sourdough waffles to take home. I've never been to a more thought out restaurant that makes everything under one roof. They are revolutionizing the way that people eat by bringing eating back to the way it was 1000's of years ago. Because the best Cheeseburger I've had in my life, (two days in a row) was at a total locally sourced and made in house restaurant up in Mystic, when I heard MSAK was the same I was very excited to visit. You've read their food philosophy, the results are spectacular. The lasagna we had for dinner was truly unique and so very tasty. I'm not a local, but I might have to see if they could make me a sheet to take away and share with friends and family. Caesar salad, garlic bread, local wine from Crow's, chocolate mousse with a spectacular strawberry and cream topping completed the dinner menu. Lunch was three pork tacos with toppings, home made queso included, black beans and a salted chocolate chocolate chip cookie.
