in 2024 i requested Modern Pests services to help with bats in my attic. they responded well and installed 1 way bat traps on my roof. the issue came with the removal. i would check the portal to see removal services scheduled only to find no one came out or there was snow on my roof and couldn't remove the traps (understandable) a year and a half later a tech came out to remove the traps. a few days later my wife asks what is in the front yard? it was the removed bat traps just thrown on my front lawn. when i went to check the roof for the traps there was still a trap in my roof. not only did they not perform the full removal but they left trash on my front lawn. i wrote to modern pest who just quietly scheduled another bat trap removal with the same tech who left trash on my lawn the first time. when i called them directly i wasn't able to speak to a manager on duty at all. No manager contacted me prior to just scheduling another removal even though the report the tech wrote out stated he removed all traps the first time. so clearly they were aware of my issue before scheduling another removal appointment and just never bothered to reach out to apologize or anything. read more

For the third time now, Modern Pest has notified me of an "outdoor service only" -- in other words, no need to be home. And for the third time now, someone has come to my door, and rung the doorbell expecting to be admitted inside. The dogs bark, business calls are interrupted...all completely unnecessary because of being notified about the wrong type of service. This time I even wrote back to them to confirm it was an outside service only. And when I called just now to ask if anyone there was interested in keeping our business, I was told all the operator could do was put a note in my file. So here's my review Modern Pest. I had a horrid experience with Modern Pest Services. My unattended house had a squirrel observed entering a hole it chewed on an upper window frame casing. I contacted this company and had to wait a month plus for their 'animal expert' to be available. It was March or so by the time this person was available, and I had a friend meet them at the house to let them in. They climbed up a step ladder poked their head through the attic opening and peered around. They then announced we had flying squirrels and bats in our attic. I've had flying squirrels in a house before but never bats, unless they came down the chimney. That was the report we received with an estimate of about $1400 to have them removed. I called and asked how many squirrels and bats. Well, it seems they didn't see any bats or squirrels when they poked their head into the attic. When I asked then why was the report that they were there? No answer. I arrived at the house a month after that with a squirrel excluder purchased online. I observed a grey squirrel, not a flying squirrel leave the hole before I put the excluder up. I likely did not need it as the temperatures in the attic raised to the point the animal would not have been comfortable there. After waiting a few days to ensure all animals were out, I went into the attic found one path between layers of insulation where the squirrel traveled and bedded down. No bats or signs of bats. I patched the hole. This was a sham. The person never set foot into the attic, never saw any animals or evidence of animals. The only evidence of animals was what was provided to them, namely that a squirrel was seen entering the house through a hole. read more

I had signed up for my service in May, they initially ask for $250.00 up front and $50. monthly totaling $850. what they fail to tell you is they take the $50.00 for the month of may when you signed up!!! they get an extra $50.00 which is wrong. The company is supppse to come back "free of charge" w/in contract date and it is to NOT interfere w/their every 3 mos schedule to spray. We use Modern Pest at our homes in Maine and New Hampshire. They are extremely knowledgeable about local pests and when they arrive seasonally. The tech uses a hand held device to track what they find in traps and where they are located on property. I find that Modern is very responsive with scheduling requests. I'm thrilled that the same tech is assigned to my home and comes each visit. At our home in NH we can count on Tim Barron to spend plenty of time discussing pest mitigation. I have a contract with Modern Pest Control which originated in September of 2020. They have not lived up to their end of the contract (attached) as follows: The first interaction with me was to send a technician to set up mouse traps and spray for mice. They could not spray because of possible rain and said they would be back in a month. Two months later I called them to come down and they came. In March, I notified them after hearing mice in the walls. I asked what good the service was if we are still getting mice. They came down and refilled one of the mice traps which was completely empty. I asked why they couldn't come down more frequently as they are only scheduled to come down every three months. They want us to call them instead. I requested a service yesterday to deal with an ant problem which is covered in the contract. They said because the garage isn't attached, it wasn't covered and I had to speak with sales to get a quote. They said they would request that sales make an expedited call-back. I didn't hear back from sales and send another request through their site and have not heard back. I made six calls this morning and received a message each time. I still have not heard from anyone. I called one more time and spoke with someone in billing. All of the executives are at a seminar. She put me in touch with someone who said he could cancel the a account, but only with an early termination fee. I told him this was not acceptable and wanted to speak with the supervisor. I asked for the supervisor's name and number and he said that the only way I could speak with him is if he called me and have still not heard from anyone. I only have three months left under the $40.00 per month contract ($250.00 up front) and want out without paying an early cancellation fee. read more

Modern Pest doesn't even rate a single star. Modern Pest in Westbrook, Brunswick, Augusta, and Bangor is all the same. The calls all get answered in their Brunswick call center manned by a bunch of nitwits who have no idea who works for the company or how to transfer you to the person you need to speak with. Even if you give them a name and the location they work out of you get a, duh. Well that duh carries all the way down through the company to technicians who are no shows and if they do show have no safety glasses, no gloves, no respirators, are wearing shorts and short-sleeved shirts so definitely not appropriate or safe for dealing with pests, especially not to treat for any kind of bug, which really doesn't matter since they have no intention of actually treating anything if and when they do show up. I had a no show first, then two people showed up on two reschedules, different person each time, only to stand in my doorway with a blank look on their faces, (could it be from breathing in fumes at some long past actually treated location?) turn around and walk back to their truck and leave without so much as doing an inspection. I really do get all those horrible reviews I've read about this do nothing company. I finally resorted to doing research online and ordering great natural products including pest repelling plants that resolved my problem in days while my neighbors continue to suffer while hoping Modern Pest will actually send someone to actually treat. Save your money, these people are a major ripoff who will drain your bank account while delivering nothing. Check out reviews elsewhere and see they are consistently cancelled after ripping people off and adding unauthorized charges like "ferry fees." Never give this company a credit card, bank account information, or debit card. read more

These guys are great. I've been using their services for years to keep the mice at bay. They send the same person each time to do check-ups and re-bait. I always get a full report to any changes, activity, or concerns. If you're lucky enough to have Mark L as your service rep, you're in excellent hands. Recently after the house was unoccupied for a while, we returned to find flying squirrels had taken up residency in the walls. Raymond, from their Wildlife Division, came out and gave me a quote and took the time to thoroughly explain the way flying squirrels operate and behave, and came up with a logical plan of attack to remove them without harm and prevent them from returning. Today he returned to do the work and walked me through everything. Fingers crossed. I'll update if there are any problems. read more

I have a contract for my business with Modern. Since May I have called because of a ant problem inside the building. Each time I call they make an appointment two weeks or further out. Then I go and wait for 2 hours to give them a little time in case running late. But they don't show up, never call. Today they were supposed to be here between 6:00am -6:45 am. I arrived at 5:30am and it's now 7:28am. No one came. Do yourself a favor and hire someone else! I am today. read more

Today for the 2nd time, Modern Pest cancelled my initial home visit. I cancelled the service.

Our house had some squirrels in the attic. Flying squirrels.We had squirrels in the attic. Yeah, I took it personally like that funny lady on the commercial for some insurance company. HA Small critters that only need 1/2 inch of space to get in the attic warm and toasty space. We called Modern because they use no poison and no big tarps. you dont have to leave your house. We learned alot about insulation and wildlife. We are remodeling our house and new insulation is a MUST!! So let me say, The crew arrived promptly and were efficient. The bad insulation was taken out, The area disinfected and brand new insulation was put in. We got a higher R factor for the new insulation. Prior to the insulation being put in, the crew, Anthony and 2 others, came to the house and did what they call"exclusion" to prevent squirrels for up to a year. We appreciated their honesty and thoroughness. they do have a guarantee and will honor it. The new insulation has R49 factor and is warm and cool and also has some boric acid on the bottom. Prevents all kinds of critters from coming in your house. The insulation crew we had was lead by Karl. The initial contact Colton. Anthony did the first part of exclusion, Modern is so , well MODERN, cause they dont kill, they prevent and are proactive. NO poison, no snap traps, no guns. And these guys are hardy Mainers who hunt and fish and trap to live, but not for sport,but they dont kill to kill. Karl even said its so nice to not kill anything,but to put it in its place. Their mission, get the squirrels to live in the woods, eradicate the termites, prevent fleas and bed bugs and give you new cozy insulation. We have a critter free home and no tents or anything. All is well and you should call them. Licensed by the wildlife division of Maine, now who could help you live better indoors and out. So if you are buying,remodeling or selling a home, call them for a FREE inspection and see what they can do for you! read more

I had rats in my basement that got in through an open bulkhead during a storm. I was having trouble catching them, so I called Modern Pest Services for their free pest removal quote that is stated clearly on the first page of their website. The technician showed up and said "Yep, you have rats." I told him that I knew that and I was interested in ways of getting rid of them. He showed me several options of traps and bait and gave me ballpark prices on each, but he said that I had to call the office to actually order the services. I gave him my debit card number so that they would have it on file; he called the card number into the office. When I called the office to order the services the technician had recommended, the woman on the phone told me that the technician was mistaken. She said the services and prices he offered me were only for commercial clients. She said that they only had one type of residential service that included spraying for 60 types of insects and bugs along with the rat traps. She also said that the price for these services was far above what the technician had quoted. I told her that I was not interested in the spraying program because I have young children and a dog. She said that was the only residential service they offered. I told her well they should probably educate their technicians to that fact, and that I did not want the service. She then proceeded to tell me that I owed them $99. I said the website says a free pest removal quote (check the website). She said that was if you ordered services, then it was free?!?! I told her that her company is not offering any of the services that the technician mentioned or that I am interested in. I have now been harassed for that $99 by several letters and several phone calls. Recently I received a collections letter for $148.50! Where did the extra $49.50 come from? I haven't been able to get any one higher up than the customer service people on the phone. So here I am being charged for something that says is free on their website, they sent out a technician who knew nothing about residential services or pricing, and now they are tacking on extra money for doing absolutely nothing! They didn't help in any way whatsoever and want $148.50 for that. Good luck Modern Pest Services; you're not getting a dime from me. Don't waste your time with these guys. The BBB will be hearing about their so-called 'free' pest removal quote. read more

We have been using the monthly service program by Modern Pest since a previous residence. They come by once a quarter for a general preventative sweep, and they'll come out as needed to take care of whatever comes up in the meantime (just call them - it's part of the service). Usually it's just some simple baiting and waiting or other preventative measure, but over the summer we had a carpenter ant problem on a 2nd floor (!!) that was GONE (I mean GONE) in about 2-3 days through applications of special bait in the right spots. Whew! Without exception their technicians are very friendly, tell you what's going on, and what to expect. They are knowledgeable about the various pests and know what to do to take care of them. Sure, some pests are stubborn, but Modern Pest will come back as needed to take care of your home. Our technician Tyler is relatively new on our account, and he's wonderful to deal with, knows his pests, and is going to make sure we are satisfied. Customer service, too, is very friendly when you call. The Modern Pest program lets me sleep at night. They perform preventative work on a regular basis, and they are just a phone call away should something come up and have the right experience and tools to take care of what might be bugging our home. read more

I've been a client for several years - can't change who I use because I don't want to have to pay several hundred dollars in upfront costs again.
