I've came into this salon twice and both times I've left disappointed with my service. The staff is combative when you ask them to fix your nail shape. Jimmy is great foot technician defiantly recommend asking for him if you are looking to get a great pedicure. As for the male tech (I was not told his name when I asked politely) does a horrible job , I came in for a full set of acrylics and he left bubbles in my nails and left chucks of glue stuck to the back of my nail. I left and it looked ok, but when I got outside I could tell how a horrible job he had done to my nails and I returned to the location to have them redone because they were horrendous. When I went back Vicky (one of the other nail tech) was furious with the guy that did my nails because she could tell the job was not done correctly and was done lazily. She claimed you would have to make a appointment instead of walking in to have them done correctly which makes no sense considering there was 4 other nail techs available and no other customers in the building. Always super friendly staff, very clean. Been going here for years before I moved, and now when I'm visiting, I make a point to come here for a vacation treat. I've personally watched them use their UV sanitizer for all of the metal tools, and the others are either new our soaked in barbercide. They even use choices for the tubs sop you don't have to worry about that. (Posting this for clarification because someone said they didn't clean tools, but they absolutely do!!!) This must recent time I had a more difficult manicure in mind and Vicky stepped right up to the challenge and did a beautiful job. She is great like that. I am sad to have to even put in a star for this place. I went on a weekday mid-morning for a pedicure and it was packed. I have read mixed reviews about this place and thought how bad can it be when it's so busy. They were operating in Beauty Connection as a car ran into their space about a week or so before. The owners were very nice and the technician was also. But .... I have been bothered since I left the place. The place looked like a sweatshop, perhaps due to the temporary space. The technicians placed her tools in a plastic basket and tools were not sanitized between clients. The technician used the clippers on me placed it back in her basket and then went and used it on another person. It didn't bother me until the owner (or her daughter) grab those same tools and used it on my neighbor who had thick yellow nails - eeeew. The lady was commenting that she had to go in because her nails are too thick for her to cut herself. I started thinking nail fungus waiting to happen. read more

Mimi is the BEST. Literally anywhere else I've ever gone for a gel mani/pedi has not lasted nearly as long as Mimi's work does, and my nails are STRONGER after like 6 consecutive gel appts, when usually one or two in a row totally destroys my nails. Mimi creates beautiful manicures and pedicures that stand the test of time (and my haphazard flailing about, which usually results in chipping quickly when I've gone to other nail salons) and she's worth every penny. I write a check or pay cash, as they ask, and won't ever go anywhere else if I can help it! Great service and also very efficient use of time. I called to schedule a fill as I am new in town and this place was recommended to me. I will not be back. My nails look awful, they are thick and have bumps and ridges on every nail. If this place was closer to where I live I would go back and have my nails fixed. I was quoted one price over the phone and was charged nearly double. UPDATE: My nails look like crap. It has not been a week and they are so thick that the outgrowth looks awful. I am now going to have to pay to have their sloppy work corrected. Had a fabulous manicure by Sophia! She was very good and attentive to my nails! I have had very thin, brittle nails all my life, and Sophia was great at helping me with them. She gave me great advice at how to keep them for getting too dry and how to keep them looking great! My manicure lasted quite awhile considering I am always washing my hands!! The salon is very clean and everyone there was super nice! I normally go to the Modern Nails on Santa Rosa Ave, which is across the street from Costco. Kim does my pedicures there. She is also fantastic! Always does a terrific job, and is always so nice and friendly too! Love the pedicure chairs as they have the massage feature on them, so not only do I get a great pedicure and foot massage from Kim, but my back also gets a treat too! Glad to know I now have two places to choose from now depending on what part of town I am on! read more

I have been salon shopping in Santa Rosa for the last 25 years, and I'm done! I have found Jimmy, the best pedicure technician ever, at Modern Nails in Bennett Valley next to Joe Video! He has been doing nails for 17 years, has been at Modern Nails for 13, and performs the most precise French pedicure I've ever had, AND it lasts a full MONTH! And, he not only speaks clear English, he actually chats with me too. I have told all my friends about him, and will always come back to him for my pedicures in the future! One of my issues with traveling is finding a good hair and nail salon. This salon, Modern Nails, is 1 of 2 in the whole country I have found to be excellent!!! Vicky is friendly, educated in her craft and has a beautiful shop in the wine country of California. She also does the dipping powder process which is much healthier for your nails. She cleaned up a mess I received from a shop in Petaluma named Shangri la...which was awful!!! I am so happy I found her and will never go anywhere else looking for a nail lady when I am in this area!!! Clean, nice, friendly and excellent work! I walked in asking for a mani/pedi on a friday afternoon. There were about 4 or 5 other women already being serviced, so they told me about a 30 minute wait. Ok, cool, they had tons of magazines, so I automatically sat down to kill about 20 min with a few issues of Cosmo. About 10-15 min later, I was approached by the male who works here. He didn't smile or say hi, just asked what I needed and looked at my hands. I told him I was interested in getting a nail design, he said they had the designs on a card somewhere (ok thanks?). I had gel polish on from my last manicure at a different location, so he sat me at a station and gave me a very small stainless steel bowl of acetone to soak my fingers in. Looking inside, I saw what I initially thought were lavender bath flakes or something and thought "huh. odd." A couple min later, bored of staring around the room, I looked back into the bowl to check my nail progress. I realized those were NAIL POLISH flakes. The man had given me a bowl of acetone he had used on another customer. Ew!! I'm sure that acetone kills bacteria to a degree (I hope..) but that's just disgusting and really cheap to me. Anyways, I ignored this since my nails were almost done, and what was done was done. A woman came over to check my nails. I guess they had cured enough for her liking, so she grabbed a metal tool (I think it was the cuticle pusher...) and scraped the crap out of my nails. I surveyed my nails: uneven surfaces, thinned like crap from the scraping and acetone, and there was still some gel polish bits. So back my fingers went to the acetone. I had a really bad feeling at this point that I shouldn't have strayed from my new favorite nail place, but stuck it out, doing a quick prayer to the Nail Gods. So the woman comes back. She seems a bit quiet despite my attempts to coerce conversation. That's okay with me. She proceeds on with the normal cut, file, soak, cuticles, etc. The hand and forearm massage wasn't bad (+1 star). It was weird though, because after she finished, she ordered me to walk across the room to wash my hands. Not that I have a problem with walking at all, it just surprised me because usually the techs just clean the nails for you and get to work. Well, whatever. I let her know at this point I hadn't picked out my color since I'd expected a long waiting time, so I run over (annoying customer that I am I guess) and quickly pick out a nail color, praying she wouldn't spit in my nail polish. Anyways, back to the table. I asked again about the designs. Do you do them? They do, but she doesn't know offhand where the card is that displays them, and she doesn't bother to search. I do appreciate that she demos one design on my hand. It actually looks really cute, so I accept it to be done on both of my ring fingers. The paint job looks pretty bad. I blame in part the scraping of my nails done by another tech, which made them uneven and therefore a bad base for nail polish. But my new tech didn't do so hot either, I watched and saw places that were missed on the nail on the first coat. Then she would take care of them on the second coat, creating a crack (that's my best description) in the color when dried :(. The design came out really cute (+1 star), even if uneven. Pedicure next- it wasn't too terrible. It was pretty subpar and probably would have given the business another star if 1. the massage didn't hurt so badly I winced or 2. the tech used some kind of automatic file on some parts of my feet, then tossed it back in the drawer without sanitizing it before or after use? Ahhhhh! Spare me, oh bacterial hoardes. They don't take cards, but they do have a generic atm with the lowest fee ($1) I've ever seen. I dropped a decent tip because I try to be a decent person, but all in all, I will definitely not be returning. read more

I have gone to this salon in the past multiple times and I always get gel nails. It has always turned out beautiful. But then I recommended them to my mom and it was a horrible experience for her... So my mom was just wanting a regular manicure. She had never had a manicure ever in her life, so she did not know what to expect. She told me that she walked in and they did not greet her but just yelled at her to sit down in a chair. She sat down and a guy technician then yelled at her saying she didn't pick a color and to get up and get one. She picked one out and then he kept saying she didn't want that color and there are better ones but my moms like "yes I picked it, I want this one". And then he says it's not gel polish so it is just going to come right off and kept telling her to get gel polish instead. She's like "no, I only want a regular polish, not gel." And he made her feel bad for not doing a gel manicure. She also added that it was her first time ever having a manicure and the guy says rudely back, "I can tell!" While she was getting her nails done, he did not clean all the cuticles. The polish job was very quick and he was not gentle at all-- throwing her hands in front of the drying fan back and forth in a harsh manner. Before my mom went in for her appointment, they had told her over the phone that the regular manicure takes about 30-35 minutes. The technician took less than 20 minutes for her manicure! Two good things: The price was affordable ($13 I think). And when I saw her nails they were cute and nice looking. Overall, it was a bad experience because of the customer service. The technician made my mom feel really bad because she had never had a manicure before and pressured her for things she didn't want. If you are going to spend your money for getting your nails done, you should definitely be treated nicely!! I'm disappointed to hear that this happened...and I wont come back or recommend them anymore. read more

Don't be confused because there are two Modern Nail shops withing a couple of doors from each other. I have been to both and love the small salon because they are so friendly, everyone seems to know your name and Cindy takes great care of my nails. Last time I was in to get nail gels she remembered I like to use sun screen to protect my hands and I happened to forget to put some on before I left home. I have been going here for years for spa pedicures. I can usually walk in if I need too, and they are always helpful. The service is consistent and commensurate with the price. In other words, you get what you pay for - it's not a fancy spa with cucumber water, but you get a thorough good pedicure in a clean environment for $23. read more

It was my first time here, I called them and they told me to come right down, since my schedule is always all over the place it was nice to be able to get an appointment that quick! I was a little hesitant while the nail technician was applying the acrylic, I explained how I like my nails, and she ended up doing exactly what I asked for. She really knew her stuff, I didn't feel like she was rushing, and I felt she took her time to do a great job.
