Today, was my first time having my eyes examined by Dr Cheryl Alderson. As she examined my eyes she explained to me every procedure and its purpose. I was amazed by the advanced technology that both Dr Alderson and Dr Dominguez have in their office. I was able to see enlarged images of the back portion of my eyes and the anatomy of the inner portion as well! I left with a clean bill of health and 20/20 vision but I must admit that after seeing the eyewear selection it made me want to own a pair....especially the oh so trendy Salt line! It was that time of year again - time for new contacts. However, it was not time to go back to my previous location. After having the boyfriend search for the best place near our house, I ended up at Modern Eyewear Optometry. I was very impressed with Dr. Dominguez. He was very thorough with the exam, spent a lot of time talking with me about different options and what I can expect with my eyes in the upcoming years. We were able to select the daily contacts that worked best for me and there was no pressure when I told him that I had to wait to get my glasses prescription updated (darn insurance won't pay for both contacts and glasses!!). I am a patient that has suffered with poor vision due to Kertaconus Pellucid Marginal Corneal Degeneration. I was originally diagnosed with a astigmatism many years ago and prescribed contact lenses. After my vision continued to get worse I went back to the eye doctor and was told I had a condition called Kertaconus. This disease would change the shape of my eye and progressively get worse until I reached a certain age, at which time it would stop progressing. My vision continued to get worse even after reaching the age it was suppose to stop. I seen my eye doctor again and he believed the only solution would be to have a cornea transplant. He prescribed one hard contact lens to fit the one eye that was not too misshaped. I was sent to a higher level of care to determine if I would be a candidate for transplant. The doctor that saw me said he would recheck my vision again in 6 months and decide at that point how to move forward with trying to correct my vision. The one contact improved my vision enough to allow me to function day to day. I thought I was seeing just fine until I went to the DMV to renew my license and was denied. They had documented No Vision on my right eye and did not pass the vision test. A friend of mine, who suffers from the same condition, and has been a long time patient of Dr. Dominguez, recommended that I see him. She said I had to go see him, he would help me and I would not believe how clear I would be able to see with just contact lenses. In fear of having to have a cornea transplant, and of also losing my license, I made an appointment with Dr. Dominguez. That appointment has changed my life in ways I cannot explain. For years I was unable to see clearly, but I did not realize how bad my vision was, I just knew it was hard for me to see. I had to constantly squint to see far. Dr. Dominguez gave me great news and hope when he told me that he did not feel I was at the stage of requiring a transplant, and that my vision could be corrected with special contact lens, Sclera Lenses. When my contacts came in, I went back to try them on and I could not believe the clarity of my vision. I stood in his waiting room in amazement of all the things I could see around me, including the address on the building across the street! I felt like crying but was so excited and happy that I could finally see things with definition! I cannot give enough thanks to Dr. Dominguez, and his professional, attentive and courteous staff, for what they have given me, MY VISION! I went back to the DMV, passed the vision test and renewed my license, which is a good thing because I don't live close Dr. Dominguez's office. I live 68 miles away, but I would travel 168+ miles to see Dr. Dominguez and his staff. I am a patient for life! read more

Before I get into my review, let me say this: Eff Lenscrafters. No, they never screwed me over, but after having a _real_ consultation with somebody that knew a lot about eye wear, I will never go back to that place. Earlier in life, when I was a child (not yet a man) I went to Lenscrafters because the TV told me to go there. Never again. I can't believe I used to be satisfied with that place. I find it rare to have a quality customer experience anywhere in SoCal these days. There are few restaurants that can always pull it off and there are an even fewer number of retail stores that consistently make me glad to be a patron. So far, Modern Eyewear is the only one that has moved me enough to spread the word. I checked Yelp and was surprised that nobody had reviewed them yet. Here is what I got out of my experience: 1) Service: The person helping me - the owner, apparently - gave me complete and total attention. She greeted everyone who came in, but also made it clear that she was helping me at the moment. I didn't have a clue what I wanted and she patiently and thoroughly answered all of my questions. She knew about styles - what was new, what was trending; what was professional-yet-stylish, etc. She also was able to give me advice on what kinds of eye wear was easy to care for. She was also clear about pricing and never once tried to upsell me on anything. I am a huge sceptic when it comes to listing to salespeople trying to sell me something. My experience here never once felt like a sales job. It felt like I had a personal consultant. (For those of you familiar with my life, you will understand how much more comfortable that is for me.) Before I made the purchase, I went home and verified the things I was told. I found no discrepancies between what I was told at Modern Eyewear and what the Internet had to say. 2) Advice: The owner was honest with me about what looked good and what didn't. She got additional opinions from other employees and everyone had different bits of useful advice (and the employees were allowed to dissent - which I think is one of the signs of a good employer). I ended up going with some frames by a Danish design house. They are the best looking frames I have ever owned. They match my yacht's striping as well as my family seal. (This was all purely coincidental.) 3) Time and Money: I was able to make an appointment for my final fitting during lunch. It took just a few minutes and I was completely pleased. The turnaround time was, I believe, a bit less than two days. From what I understand, they do the majority of lens cutting in the store. I suspect this is why it took a day less than the next fastest place I have ever been to. They took my eye insurance as well. Out of pocket cost was less than what I payed at Lenscrafters. 4) Professionalism: When I first came in, I looked like a complete slob. I was still treated with absolute respect. When I first came in, I wasn't looking for new glasses, I just wanted some old ones repaired. They were not able to repair them (my frames required welding) but they told me where I could go to get them fixed and told me the general price range I should be paying for the repair. This helpfulness (with no monetary benefit to them) is one of the reasons I went back. 5) Selection: They have a lot of very cool frames. There are some hip frames as well as the classics and a wide variety of what I would consider 'professional' frames (ranging from conservative to progressive). Female, or male, web designer or attorney, I suspect you will find multiple frames that you would like to have resting on your nose. I saw at least three other pair that I would love to have. This isn't Costco, so you won't find $30 frames here. The selection here is high-quality and stylish, but not the overpriced self-stimulatory diamond-studded mush you might find at South Coast. (Yes, I said self-stimulatory. I checked my thesaurus and it was the only word that communicated the concept without sacrificing the tone for which I was reaching. No, there was no dangling participle.) Finally, I want to share something that I noticed while I was there. One of the employees was clearly new, and the owner was helping the employee learn the inventory and sales systems. What stood out to me was how kind and supportive and professional she was being towards the new hire, explaining how it worked, letting the employee try it, and never once condescending or being anything but a great boss. We have all had crappy ignorant bosses, and it was great to see someone being a good boss. I am a fan of local businesses as long as they work hard and right for my business. Modern Eyewear exceeded my expectations. If you dig local business, or if you just want to see what quality service feels like, check this place out. I realize this review was long and gushing. Dr. Charles Dominquez is the most attentive, thoughtful, and kind optometrist I've ever encountered. Somehow, he is able to recall not only the small nuances of my eyes, but even the small (yet big) details of my life. He honestly cares and he's uplifting to be around. Regarding my eye care and exams, he spends a moment to check in with me and then gets to business. After the exam, he makes sure all my questions are answered and offers additional after care advice. Many optometrists I've encountered are in and out of the exam and I feel like a patient just getting pushed through the system. During my appointment, he also educates me on my options and explains his decision making process for recommendations. I'm sure he's a very busy person but he somehow manages to make you feel like the appointment with him in that moment, matters. He's very present and he ensures you're taken care. One other thing - I was so touched by his genuine and down-to-earth personality that I felt compelled to send a personal thank you card - a very rare occasion indeed!!! I'm also aware through our conversation that he serves other communities whom aren't so fortunate to afford vision care in the well-off Orange County area. I find this so admirable. Last, he's taken great care of my prized mother and she flies all the way from Hawaii to see him every time she visits. I wish other doctors were like him. Colleen, from Modern Eyewear, is why I signed up for Yelp. I just had to leave her a positive review because she was super helpful and nice. Such exceptional service is rare to come by. I needed nosepad arms to be added to my current eyeglass frames. I called around to several places and decided to give Colleen a try because she sounded the most helpful over the phone. When I brought in my frames, we realized that the nosepads she offers (the kinds that get drilled into your frames, not the kinds with a metal arm attached to the nose pads) were too low in profile to be of much assistance for me since I have virtually no nose bridge. Colleen wanted to give me the help that I needed, but didn't want to compromise the aesthetics of my frames by adding ugly or non-functional nose pads. (As an aside, I now know that there are so many types of nosepads, so if you're in need of some - make sure you ask about the specifics before agreeing to anything.) Instead, she gave me a double set of stick-on nose pads (free of charge!), which will offer me some temporary relief while I figure out how to fix my frames. Colleen also called around to several other places to see if they offered the nosepads I wanted, and also suggested for me to try Prodesign frames (which she carries) - a line of plastic eyeglass frames that come with optional, and very comfortable, nosepads. All around, Colleen was awesome. I love that she was genuine and didn't try to sell me stuff to make a buck. I'd very much recommended Modern Eyewear! read more

Dr Dominguez was very professional and kind. I've worn contacts and glasses forever but recently vision was blurry with my last prescription. I chose Dr Dominguez because he studied specialized contact fitting at Jules Stein Center at Ucla. Dr Dominguez has modern up to date eye exam machines and the glaucoma machine doesn't hurt like those old machines that burst air in your eyes. He did a thorough history and exam on my eyes. He prescribed astigmatism contacts which my last optometrist didn't think I needed, and he offered me new options I've never heard of to improve my vision. Also perks: Fiji water bottles in waiting room and got 40% discount on designer sunglasses! I didn't know vision insurance covered sunglasses! Everyone was very nice, place was very clean and ran on time. I only wish they had more designer glasses in the store (like D&G, Dior, Fendi) but they have more tom ford glasses online that you can order. read more
