Sweet potato burrito bowl (front), warm brussels sprouts caesar salad (center), sweet potato taco (back)

If you're hiking at Catawba Falls, visiting Old Fort, NC, you live there or are just passing through on I-40, there's a new combination Mexican restaurant and small batch distillery/brewery where the food is innovative, healthy and tasty and they serve some great craft-brewed beer and cocktails made (mostly) with their own spirits. They even also have CBD infused drinks, if that's more your thing. The location is in downtown Old Fort in an old building that they have nicely rehabbed. Not fancy, but open and comfortable, with a nice bar area. The service was welcoming, friendly and efficient. Having just finished a hike, we started with a couple of cold brews. Their selection of house-brewed beer is limited (basically light, dark and IPA, along with a cider). We opted for a dark lager, which they described as Mexican style. It was excellent. Not too dark, but with some real character and very smooth (no bitterness, no bite). To accompany the beers, we started with the chips and elote dip. I've had what's often called Mexican street corn in several restaurants in various forms (on and off the cob). Often the corn is nothing special and it's simply loaded up with cotija cheese. Here the corn itself is the star of the show. It's roasted, off the cob, and well seasoned, with only a light coating of cotija. Very tasty! For his entree my husband had the brussels sprouts caesar salad. There are lots of places in the Asheville area that pan roast brussels sprouts, usually with maple or some sort of light sugaring. In this version, the sprouts were nicely pan roasted, but not sweet. They are served warm, mixed with chicharron (pork rinds), parmesan cheese and caesar dressing, with a roasted lemon on the side. My husband loved this dish so much he said he'd drive from Asheville to Old Fort occasionally just to have this. Nothing quite like it anywhere else! He also had a sweet potato taco on the side. He said it was good, but not exceptional (at least compared to the brussels sprouts). I had a sweet potato burrito, but done as a bowl instead of a traditional wrapped burrito (all their burritos are available either way). It was very good. The pieces of sweet potato were crispy on the outside and just soft enough on the inside. The beans, rice, Oaxaca queso and pico de gallo had very good flavor and worked well with the sweet potatoes. I missed that you could add sauteed peppers and onions, or I would have added those, too. We were stuffed after the appetizer, the entrees, and the beers. Lots of great options on the cocktail menu. The people sitting next to us were raving about their granny smith daquiris. The distillery is operational now with tours and tastings planned in the near future. Their spirits are competitively priced for small-batch venues. Since there wasn't a way to taste them yet (except in a cocktail, and we had beer instead), I couldn't review the spirits yet. We'll definitely be back for more food and to try the spirits!

We finally made it... and honestly, I think we deserve a medal…read more After multiple failed missions to visit this cinnamon bun place (closed... closed again... and somehow still closed ), we decided to try one more time as a birthday surprise for our daughter. Let me just say--the wait was so worth it, it almost feels like part of the experience now. Like a rite of passage. If you get in on your first try, are you even doing it right? From the moment we walked in, it was clear this wasn't just about cinnamon buns--it was an event. And then there's Wendy, the owner, who might actually be part pastry chef, part magician, part birthday fairy. She went out of her way to make our daughter feel special, and you could tell she genuinely loves what she does (and is really, really good at it). Now let's talk about the food... WOW. These are not your average cinnamon rolls. These are the kind that make you go silent mid-bite because your brain needs a second to process what just happened. Creative, over-the-top in the best way, and absolutely delicious. We tried a few different ones, and every single one felt like it was competing for "favorite child" status. By the end, we were full, happy, slightly covered in icing, and already talking about when we'd come back (and how many times we might have to try before catching them open again). 10/10 would stalk their hours and show up again. Totally worth it.

I have not been to the home location for Four sisters, but I have tried some of the croissants and…read moretheir variations a few times around the Asheville area. While some of their pastries look decent, there is something about their Viennoiserie (laminated dough) products that they just seem to not understand. Every one of their croissants I've tried were underproved, which causes an undesirable internal texture that is dense and not open and light like croissants are supposed to be. They are also very "bread like", which shows that they are losing control of the temperature of the dough and butter during the lamination process. This causes the butter to melt into the dough, rather than keeping the intended layers. This is what causes the crumb of the croissant to be more bread like, rather than the light honeycomb structure you find in a well-crafted croissant. Their other products, assorted buns, cinnamon rolls, etc., look decent, but I haven't tried much of those as they aren't really what I enjoy. I hope at some point they can dial in their understanding of the laminated dough process as it would only elevate and improve what they offer. However, they seem to be busy, so they may be fine with delivering a lower quality product in that department. I also understand that my perspective may be different than the average customer as I'm a professional pastry chef and consultant. I'm not sharing this review to be negative, but to give an honest opinion that may spark this establishment to look deeper into their process and find ways to offer even more to their customers.

Staff so very sweet and helpful. They had a wall of team member's fur babies around a sign about an April 7th fundraiser for Asheville Humane Society. Pooped in for my daily matcha latte and decaf latte. Enjoyed the matcha. I prefer nothing but matcha and milk in mine. If you want any syrups put in you'll have to ask. Decaf latte texturally was great the bean flavor wasn't my vibe. On the day, we were leaving town we wanted to get a box of goodies for our sweet family members who had taken care of one of our pups so that we could get away for the weekend. The team was so marvelous in helping us put together this bountiful box of goodies. Which our family members immediately opened and enjoyed nibbles of all of the different flavors and items. We originally found them when one of our family members was having health challenges and could not have dairy or gluten. They have such a wonderfully inclusive assortment of treats for everyone in the family. Including vegan. Enjoyed people watching sitting on the patio and the dog scene is awesome. Really lovely chill atmosphere with delightful team. They do have restrooms for customers. You're able to tap and pay in addition to cash and traditional credit card purchase. Always a delight to visit.
