On 3/12/23 our visit was truly abysmal. The employees behind the counter were doing their best given the place was slammed. The problem is bad management. The manager person had on her jacket and bag, and was heading for the door but stopped an employee, the only person making the pizzas, and gave him a to-do list about cleaning. She clearly did not care or did not notice the huge line of increasingly frustrated customers. And judging by how frazzled and confused a couple of employees acted, clearly the manager did not train them thoroughly enough, and felt it was okay to clock out and leave them stranded. Once we got home with our food, it was very evident that the staff need more experience before being left without a manager's oversight. Pizza was undercooked and soggy, barely any of it was edible. After seeing a Buffalo Chicken salad on the MOD Pizza menu on DoorDash, we tried to order that but the employee had never heard of it, so we had to show him what goes in the salad. Overall this visit was a total shit show, and it's the manager's fault. She needs a lot more training, as do the rest of the staff. Also, three employees were wearing the NOT slip-resistant Crocs with ventilation holes. These shoes are not allowed in food service. Only the Croc "chef shoes" with closed toes and no ventilation holes are allowed in restaurant kitchens. read more

Pizza was nothing special and hardly edible with all the black charcoal on the bottom every slice! It seems they never clean their oven. After handling a few slices, my hands looked like a mechanic with all the dirt and soot from the pizza. I also ordered online and STILL had to wait about 30 minutes! I came in here completely clueless; I knew nothing! Turns out, this place is like a pizza version of Subway, but with more of a restaurant sit-down feel. The staff was super helpful and friendly. Here's what I had: $8.29 I honestly don't remember what I ordered because there was a lot of toppings. It was a set pizza with additional toppings on top. The crust was very thin and your pizza is baked to order! Can't get any fresher than that! I thought the pricing was decent. MOD STRIPS - $2.97 This was pretty pizza crust with olive oil, garlic, Parmesan cheese, and some herbs with a dipping sauce. There's 3 kinds and I chose pesto. This isn't bad...I mean it comes out the same time as your pizza order so I think it defeats the purpose of an appetizer. It's really more carbs. Tasty carbs. I thought this place was pretty cool and convenient. This restaurant was although fast, it felt like a non-fast food place...it was clean and new! Efficient, friendly, clean, economical, easy parking in South Shore Center and unlimited toppings? Sign me up! I finally made it to Mod after some fellow Yelpers asked me why I hadn't been so I could take photos of my food for them so I made the trek with my neighbor. I'd been to a Mod in the South Bay once before so the concept wasn't new to me. Both my friend and I ordered the Mod (medium size) pizzas. He'd never had it before so it was fun to relive the experience of when you see all the toppings and you ask if it's really all still one price regardless of what you put on. I ordered mine with red sauce, garlic rub, arugula (felt like it needed some greens and decided to pass on spinach this time), cheese, pepperoni, spicy Italian sausage, mushrooms, olives and artichokes. What? Artichokes? Yes. And good tasting ones at that! We put in our orders, paid at the cash register, and then sat and waited. Since the pizza crust is thin, it doesn't take long for the pizza to cook which is a plus in my book. For those who love crust, this isn't the pizza for you. I like minimal crust and maximum toppings! The pizza was ready I'm about 5 minutes and was crunchy and cooked through. For about $9, it definitely beats out Dominos, Mountain Mike's, Round Table and Little Caesars as my go to pizza place in Alameda now that Crolls is gone. Value and tastes great! read more

Date: 7/17/2016 Time: 1:30 PM 63° Partly cloudy and windy MOD Pizza had its soft opening today, offering a special of 50% off on pizzas, milkshakes, salads, etc., until 2:00 PM, and later from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The grand opening will be tomorrow. From one of my fellow yelpers (Albertino M), he made mention that the first 52 people in line will get a free pizza at the grand opening. Lunch date with my sister, so we decided on MOD Pizza. Ambiance: simple and casual. Double door entrance. Front area has several tables and seating for dining in and there are a few more tables and seats along the wall extending half way back to the rear of the business on the right side. Corridor from that point leads to the restroom facilities. Self-serving cold beverages (sodas, lemonade, strawberry lemonade, teas) are on the counter in the same area. Shelf unit has boxes for leftover pizzas. Below the counter are two compartments - one for plates; the other for trash. Sad to say that MOD does not know about compost because uneaten crusts, pizzas, salad greens, soiled waxed paper liners are compost items, not trash. Specialties: 9 different classic pizzas, classic salads (simple, deluxe or caesar), garlic and cinnamon strips, drinks consisting of locally brewed draft beer and wine, MOD shakes, floats, fountain drinks (sodas, iced teas and lemonades. You can also make your own with an assortment of pizza and salad toppings - choice of bases (sauce, pesto or garlic rub); cheeses; veggies, herbs & good stuff; meats; dressings and finish it with a variety of sauces. Any toppings you want and it is the same price. Price range for pizza or salad: $6 to $12. Garlic and cinnamon strips: approx. $3. Beverages from $3 (floats) to $12 (pitcher or carafe for beer or wine). The drill: get in line, peruse the menu board, give your order and name to the employee, pay for it. One of the employees will call out your name when food is ready. Observing the preparation of the pizza is like watching an assembly line of employees doing their thing. Wax paper liner, crust, sauce, toppings, cheese, and into the oven it goes. Pretty organized, I must say. Customer service: friendly, helpful and quick. I can only guess they're eager to please, which is nice. Cleanliness: Grade A. Eats: Mini #7 - the dillon james, which is almost similar to a margherita pizza, except it's not balls of mozzarella cheese and it's not sliced San Marzano tomatoes on the pizza; mod #8 - the calexico, which is a red sauce base, topped with mozzarella, grilled chicken, jalapeños, gorgonzola and a hot buffalo sauce finish. I should have asked for more basil and garlic on the #7. They did drizzle some olive oil on the pizza after I request it. My sister had the #8. She said it was spicy, but they were skimpy on the grilled chicken. She rated her pizza as just okay (2.5 star rating). Pizza crust is tasty, but a tad thin. Return visit: Yes, for the mini #4 - the dominic loaded with fresh chopped basil and the mini #5 - the lucy sunshine with extra artichoke hearts to go. The cashier exhibited a poor attitude and displayed unhygienic behavior by touching their hair and then handling food, which was both uncomfortable and unsanitary. Additionally, they struggled to manage both the in-store line and online orders simultaneously. While I acknowledge the high volume of customers and the resulting pressure, since I also worked at a restaurant before, their workflow was inefficient. So overall the place is really cool...affordable, easy ordering, good location and tasty pizza. But they got not one but both our pizzas wrong. We loved the idea of all you can eat toppings (especially the brussel sprouts) but when the toppings don't make the pizza it kinda takes away from the whole idea of this place. First impressions: 1) Filthy Appearance Issues: Floor is full of straw wrappers and used cups left on the tables. Kitchen has pizza pans on the floor and bread crumbs from the oven littering half the kitchen. Drink machines looked as if they hadnt been cleaned in a week. 2) Hygene Issues: Most of the kitchen staff do not wear gloves when handling the pizzas or preparing the ingredients like the dough. 3) Online Ordering Issues: They seemed to not even know of my order places 20 mins before and did not even start my order till I walked into the store and had to find someone who could talk. Normally good pizza but tonight I sat there and watched these two people yell at the staff for giving her the wrong pizza. It had meat and she's a vegetarian. Normally I wouldn't write a bad review over one mistake, but then they gave MY pizza to the wrong person! I had to wait for a new one, and the guy who got my pizza got the wrong order too. Been coming here for years ever since they newly opened. They're basically my replacement for Pieology. This place allows you to either design your own customized pizza or order from their menu. You can choose the size of the pizza by it being the regular Mod size 11in or a mini one if you're not really hungry. I usually order the 11in regular Mod thin crust and choose my own toppings. Mod will let you choose your own UNLIMITED toppings from a huge selection of meat and veggies. You can also your own kind of sauce from red or white, and optional side sauces like pesto, ranch..etc. They are always generous with the toppings too which is surprising for their low prices. Another plus is that they have a whole bunch of different bottled drinks, fountain soda and juice WITH crushed ice!! They even offer unlimited red peppers and parm cheese out for you to take, unlike some pizza places where they only give you like 2 packets. Most of the time, I eat there in their spacious dining area and sometimes I order delivery if it's late at night. Don't even get me started with their customer service. Literally the best service I've ever had. All their employees are super friendly and unfortunately work long hours :( . But I'm so grateful for them. read more

Ok. Very much like Pieology. And like Pieology, the staff isn't overly aware of what's in their ingredients. Still, they were happy enough to go check in the ingredients list to check that the basic pizza base is vegan (is is), since the gluten-free is $2 and likely tastes terrible. I like the idea of choosing your own toppings, but ultimately isn't just not that fantastic a pizza. Partly it's the base, and certainly in my case I opted for BBQ sauce, which was incredibly sweet, and dominated everything else on the pizza. The vegan cheese here is daiya. Ultimately though, it's just too far away in traffic, and I have a Pieology around the corner if I really want something like this. Because encouraging potential is preferred to seeing restaurants close, I'm rounding my 3.5 to a 4. Having grown up eating New York pie, grazing on pizza - thin and thick - across Rome, and tasting local variants in London, Reykjavîk, Gran Canaria, across Germany, Canada, and now the SF Bay Area, I'd like to think I have some perspective on this most contentious of foods. MOD is a success in its own niche; you're offered a multitude of cheeses (ricotta, mozzarella, asiago, parmesan, and gorgonzola), a great variety of fresh toppings, a no-stress one-price-for-all-toppings policy, fast cook time, clean seating area, and huge parking area. Be aware: the crust is very thin, too many veggie ingredients result in a soggy pool of moisture after cooking, and the fishy pungency of the anchovies are brought out by the baking oven, so go lightly. Critiques: (1) at the beginning of the assembly line it took a bit of cajoling to get more than a little sauce applied to the dough, and (2) the staff on duty today made a concerted effort to keep the toppings and cheeses far away from the dough edge, presumably because management got all yell-y about things falling onto the baking oven. Whatever the reason, it's wrong. It made the middle of my pizza overloaded with ingredients, and the outer THIRD of my pie was a sad no-mans land of dry crust and stray tomato sauce: a terrific fail. Usually, that'd be enough to write a pizzeria off, but it's an easy enough thing to be mindful of (and influence) while you're constructing your pizza, and there's so much fresh and interesting to MOD that I really want it to thrive, continue feeding us, and to entertain us with ever-expanding food adventures (unlike the Pasta Pomodoro of old, which peaked at winter brasato, and then spiraled into inconsequence in an orgy of bean-counting contraction). Come to MOD. Realize it's not Zachary's deep dish, or a traditional New York pie, and enjoy what it is. Be assertive with your pizza assemblers, and you'll have a very satisfying meal that's a huge step up from fast food. Mangia! read more

I was extremely impressed with our take-out order tonight. I've eaten there several times prior to the pandemic, but this is the first time post, and we were not disappointed, it was just as I remembered it to be. I had a custom-made pizza with all my favorite toppings, including sausage, bacon, mushrooms, black olives, etc...and it was perfectly made and tasted great with the regular red sauce, mozzarella cheese and garlic rub....add all your toppings and it's still the same price, too...!!! I like thin crust and there's is one of the best. The pizza "travels well" and still warm and ready to eat at home, but next time, I think it would be even better, fresh and HOT out of their oven. Hmm, I have been here since they've opened. Service in the beginning was okay, employees didn't seem to have much training, but was still friendly enough. Fast forward... almost a year later, service definitely has plummeted.. the past few times I've been here lately, it seems the workers are hastily trying to get through the customers without much care and listening to what they need. I work in the customer service/food industry, so I completely understand how it can be sometimes. I believe if you want to be treated nicely, you should give the same to the other party. I suppose, sometimes that's not the case, they might have had a bad day or a rough moment. Understandable. However, it doesn't give you the rights to give an attitude to customers. Food is still delicious, but definitely could work on their customer service skills. I haven't had MOD in over 6 years so when I was craving pizza I decided ide see if MOD in The Bay Area could compare to MOD in Seattle and it totally did!!! For under $15 I got a custom 11 in. cauliflower pizza with loads of toppings. It was delivered 40 minutes later still warm. The crust was perfect and crispy even though I added ricotta which often leaves the crust soggy at other places. The chicken and vegetables all tasted fresh and absolutely delicious! You can try all the combinations and they have an amazing variety, in my opinion. Not many pizza places have anchovies, you know it's legit when they do. I decided to get a regular pizza with garlic rub and tomato sauce as the base--then added arugula, mozzarella, asiago, parmesan, basil, green bell peppers, mushrooms, broccoli, roasted garlic, red peppers, tomatoes, anchovies, bacon, ground beef, pepperoni, spicy italian sausage, fig balsamic glaze, and ranch on the side. The. Bomb. Diggity. I ate the whole thing and it was perfect. Crust is yummy, toppings are fresh. Also, shout out to the pizza peeps there, they have their process on point! One day I'll come back and try it with all the toppings and of course some weird combination, or even when I don't feel like eating pizza, I can make it into something else with all the different varieties. If you like thin crust, this is some seriously good pizza! I visit this location way more frequently than my waistline would like, but I just can't help myself. The toppings are plentiful and varied and some of the veggies change with the seasons. I generally start with the Mad Dog and build from there, adding spinach and basil, chicken and bacon, broccoli and shaved Brussels sprouts (surprisingly tasty). They briefly offered asparagus which also works well. A finish of Asiago and it's pizza time! A drink and their latest innovation, the No-Name Cake - essentially a large Ding-Dong - and you've got yourself a meal for $13 and change. They also offer salads - basically a build-your-own like the pizza. You can even get your salad served up on a warm pizza crust. Pizzas are ready inside of 10 minutes, fresh and hot. This place is clean and well-lit and the staff are friendly and efficient. Come in often enough and they'll greet you by name. There's plenty of parking since MOD is located at the Southshore Center in Alameda. My only wish is that it were larger, since indoor seating can be a challenge during busy times. However, there are outdoor tables or you can order to go. A true gem of a place that is a great addition to the line-up of Southshore eateries. read more

One of my favorite made-to-order chains. Super easy to select your toppings at the counter for pizza or salad and the line goes fast, even when crowded. You only have to wait for the pizza to cook and you have a fresh from the oven meal. Small pizza or salad loaded with toppings is more than enough for me. And at around $6 is a perfect price. Also, try their balsamic fig glaze on your pizza. read more

ENVIRONMENT - 4/5 Rate The setting is very modern and fresh. With fancy brick walls and a big LED "MOD" logo attached on the wall; this is a very attractive place. Unfortunately, they only have one single bathroom per gender. There were a few times where I had to step next to Chipotle to use the bathroom. Everything looks very sanitary. Of course, being a new restaurant, all the results of the renovations looks new. CUSTOM PIZZA - 4.5/5 Rate In terms of customizing your own pizza, you choose your pizza from size, topping, sauce, and ingredients! I threw a lot of relevant ingredients; from pepperoni to mushrooms, olives, jalapenos, chicken, tomatoes, onions, and etc. The wonderful staff then throws the pizza in the oven and bakes it. It does take about a good 10 minutes before the pizza is freshly served! CONCLUSION I highly recommend this place! The pizza is very tasty, much better than plain Dominoes! The ingredients are unique and fresh. The staffs are very friendly and professional. For less than $9.00 for a giant pizza, why not? I ordered the MOD pizza which is one regular 11" pizza and a long time ago I ordered the "mega" because I thought it will be a bigger pizza so I could share with more people but it was just a 11" pizza with an extra crust. I always add my own toppings to the pizzas instead of going for the ones that are on their menu. MOD has a large selection of toppings. They have basic toppings such as pepperoni, sausages, bacon, mushrooms, olives and other toppings such as sardines, cauliflower, roasted garlic, and sometimes they even have brussel sprouts.
