Buffalo hanger steak was excellent medium rare with a savory sauce, great potatoes and vegetables. The bourbon chocolate pecan pie was very good, the whipped cream brought out the flavor (was going to skip, but glad the waitress prevailed). Service was on point- attentive and discrete. Sat outside for the lovely early Autumn weather and the place was mobbed, but unhurried. I sipped my well-made cocktail in this very pleasant venue. I plan to return. Come hungry. read more

Phenomenal! The food, exquisite! Service, top notch (thank you Sasha for all your recommendations and positive vibes). We got the biscuit basket to start, it comes with the most amazing apple butter, honey butter, and pepper jelly. Then the crispy brussel sprouts, I don't know what magic they put in those, but I could eat the whole plate as an entree. They were the best crispy brussel sprouts I've ever eaten. The biscuits were delicious as well. My companion had the chicken and waffles with strawberry jalapeño syrup. I had one bite, it was excellent! Too spicy for me though. I had the shrimp and grits. I've been to New Orleans many times, I've had shrimp and grits dozens of times. These though? The.Best.Shrimp&Grits.Ever!! Their draft beer list was impressive as well. We each had a different local IPA, excellent. Every single person we came in contact with, smiled, was welcoming and the service from everyone, from the guy picking up the dishes, to the young hostess, to the amazing Sasha, was wonderful! We live several hours away, just came for the weekend. After dining here...there may be some road trips back, just to eat here. Mockingbird is in a cute, old building, exposed brick, beautiful wide plank wood floors, tin ceiling tiles. Great ambiance, impeccable service, and some of the best food ever! This place is a gem! This is a new restaurant, in a former establishment. We usually eat at the Local, but heard good things. We were a party of 6, celebrating a bday. We had a great experience! Great selection of craft beer! We ordered apps (fried green tomatoes, pork bellies, and biscuits) all perfect. We ordered the Hanger Steak, Pot Roast, and Salmon. Again, all was perfect. Great presentation and perfectly seasoned. Service was timely, and helpful! Did not try dessert since we brought our own cupcakes (and were incredibly full from apps and meal). A really wonderful atmosphere at Mockingbird, with super thoughtful decor. The moss wall is beautiful and I love the unique ceramic plates/platters mounted up on the wall. The service was great and our waitress was very attentive. My only qualm was that my husband and I were seated directly next to the front door, by the hostess stand and kitchen entrance, so there was constant foot traffic back and forth next to the table - especially considering the restaurant was fairly empty and there were plenty of open tables deeper in the restaurant. After sitting there awhile we asked to be relocated and found our new table to be much more comfortable. The fried green tomatoes appetizer, while on the pricier side, was wonderfully delicious and complimented perfectly with the arugula, pimento cheese, and pickled onion. My husband loved his pot roast, and the shrimp & grits I ordered hit the spot! The fried okra was a nice topping addition. Friendly, decent service, but we felt rushed. Our entrees came quickly before we finished a shared salad. Amenities lists 'many vegetarian options' or some such thing. There was one veggie entree and it was app sized. There are veggie sides, maybe should have tried that. Roasted Brussel Sprouts were overcooked, soggy with oil. Pot roast was average. Bisquits were salty, heavy, not flaky. Overall, disappointing, especially for the prices. $18 for an app sized vegetarian entree (veggie pot pie) that was less than one cup of soupy, tomatoey veggie mix with a small, flat, greasy crust on top. read more

Lovely dinner spot with great ambiance and excellent food. Very gluten friendly - the menu is labeled with dishes that are gluten free and ones that can be made gluten free. My wife and I had the fried green tomatoes (gf) and pork belly (gf) to start. Both had great flavor (4/5). Pork belly was slightly over-cooked. I had the pot roast with mashed potatoes and haricot vert (gf) (5/5) and my wife had the salmon (4/5). We shared banana pudding (made gf) for dessert. Service was very attentive and prompt (maybe a little too prompt?) - and everyone was outwardly friendly. It was a great experience and we would definitely recommend. read more

This is about the 4th or 5th time we have eaten here and the experience is getting a bit too uneven. The food is generally pretty tasty but the service was terrible. First, ordering seemed rushed and by the time we ordered starters and drinks, they did not come out at the same time. We ordered wine for dinner but it didn't arrive after being told it was on the way. Food and no wine... not good. Various requests for this and that just took forever to get addressed. Adding automatic 20% for tips to the bill doesn't give the staff any incentive to be exceptional. After pointing these things out, we were kindly given a gift card but I am unlikely to use it. read more

Visiting area for work and trying places every week that I'm here. This place did not disappoint! Kieran was our server, he was awesome! We started with roasted Brussels and fried green tomatoes. The pimento cheese with tomatoes was heavenly and the sauce on the Brussels was fantastic! We then both ordered the Bison hanger steak. The sauce on steak was great, the meat was cooked perfectly, the green beans and mashed potatoes were flavorful. The serving size was perfect. Nothing I would change about this meal. read more

Last night was some of the worst customer service that I have ever experienced. The biscuits that we ordered came out fairly quickly, but our waitress completely forgot to put in our other apps. When our entrees came out about an hour later (!!), we asked our waitress about the appetizers, and rather than apologize, she said, "well do you still want them?" It took 20 minutes just to get water refills, and even then, I had to go get her -twice. Our table was piled with dirty dishes. When I was finally able to flag someone else down and asked if our waitress was okay and explained the situation, the person I spoke to apologized and said that our desserts would be complimentary. Thanks to them, our desserts came out promptly, the dishes were finally cleared away, and I got a box for my leftovers. When the bill came, the desserts had not been removed. We were back to dealing with our original server and explained to her that the desserts should be removed and requested individual checks. When the checks came, we could not figure out whose was supposed to be whose. All the drinks were on one, someone else's entree was with another person's app, etc. I seriously wonder if she was drunk or high. We tried our best to sort everything out for her, but at this point it was 10:30pm, and we felt like we were being held hostage. This was especially disappointing because my first two experiences here were excellent, and because of that I have been raving about this place to everyone and even bought a friend a Mockingbird gift certificate. We were there last night for a friend's birthday dinner, which made the experience even more disappointing. The only reason I'm even giving two stars is because the food was wonderful as always. read more

Everything we had was excellent! The biscuit appetizer is dangerous, pace yourself! As someone who's spent a lot of time in Charleston and had some really good plates of BBQ Shrimp and Grits, the NOLA style at Mockingbird is hands down the best by a large margin. Visiting from out of state on our anniversary and went to Mockingbird for dinner. The food was good, very well seasoned. The waitstaff was very friendly and attentive. Observation only, not a complaint, but the vibe and menu are a little inconsistent. The food is elevated southern cuisine but the music in the bar was loud classic rock and the desserts were more comfort food than elevated southern. read more

That old saying, 'You only have one opportunity to make a good first impression', is rather apt here. We are visiting Charlottesville for the first time and thought it made sense to check out a local Southern fare restaurant (though we live in the South as well). We made a reservation based on the online menu. That said, most of the items we'd been drawn to were changed but not for the better as it turned out. Outside of the horribly prepped and essentially inedible pea pods that were included with our entrees everything else was OK, though not outstanding. I also take issue with the cocktail I ordered which was Mockingbird's version of an Old Fashion. Mind you, it tasted just fine but a mixed drink with ice should generally fill the glass not just 3 fingers. I suggested to my wife that perhaps the kitchen staff and bartender were part of the B-Team given this was a Sunday night. On the other hand, our waiter, Daniel was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. He's the reason for the extra star. We'll be back in Charlottesville in September but we will not likely return to Mockingbird. read more

I have spent several amazing nights enjoying the food, service and atmosphere at Mockingbird. The food is delicious. The menu includes creative, special mocktails. While every experience here has been delightful, my most recent experience put this establishment at the top of my list. Interestingly enough, I actually ate at a neighboring restaurant. On my way to the car, I came across a young woman on the sidewalk near Mockingbird. I stopped to see if she needed help. She was experiencing a little dehydration and hypoglycemia. I went into Mockingbird to get some water and to buy a "basket of biscuits." The hosts were quick to spring into action to help and refused to let me purchase anything. They gave me water and a to-go box of biscuits. The young woman outside felt much better after the water and food. She and her sister were able to contact a ride and head safely home. Thanks so much to Mockingbird and their amazing staff. I will definitely be back! read more

We totally loved the wonderful food and the wonderful staff! Everyone was so well trained and attentive. The staff also understood that this was our anniversary and they allowed us time to savor our food and our day. The experience at the bar was friendly enough but as soon as we sat down by 7:55pmish after a long week for a 745pm reservation everything went downhill from the waiter spilling red wine on my camel cashmere jacket, to him pouring still water into my sparkling glass vs the ice water that was full he had just poured to rushing us through every bite of our starters to refusing wine service as soon as we got our main meal and then feeling rushed to get the hell out before we could digest our meal and maybe just maybe order some dessert. Not that I would have ordered any at this point. My advise to this place is that please don't accept reservations after 7pm if you want the restaurant cleared out by 930. Pretty decent food but awful service - any other investor and restauranteur looking to get into a great space in a well deserved community could do wonders in this spot! I honestly don't think they'll last too much longer given what I experienced tonight plus what I know of my friend who is into food and service and lives very close by has only come here 2x including tonight in the years she's lived in Charlottesville.
