18 dollars for a grey goose martini from a bartender that is too busy blowing off his bar duties ! Not even a thank you for my generous tip for one drink ! Ass:;(!!!!!ìlo

I had not been back to this longtime Castro spot since the pandemic, but I've always appreciated its convivial atmosphere and big fish tank. Perhaps it's because I don't possess the most literary mind, but I thought the provocative name referred to a whale penis which you may know measures an average of nine feet in length. I saw one at the Icelandic Phallological Museum. Don't ask. Perhaps it was the colorful fish and coral in the tank (photo: https://bit.ly/3qBjcub), but it put me in a most tropical mood. Without all the mai tai fixings on hand, the bartender mixed me some Malibu's Rum with orange juice, kind of a Rum Punch, for just $6 (photo: https://bit.ly/3KE6Rwh). I came back weeks later for the $6 Tequila Sunrise (photo: https://bit.ly/3qvU3kJ), and it was even more delightful. At that bargain price, I couldn't help but get two. While I didn't end up getting in the tank with the fish, I did share what I saw in Iceland. Now I didn't say it was the one that got away, just that size does matter among select mammals. COCKTAILS - 4 stars...like the tropical ones and loved the price AMBIANCE - 4 stars...still the same congregation spot it's always been SERVICE - 4.5 stars...the bartender was here to please TOTAL - 4 stars...the name is anatomically correct RELATED - Exploring the Castro? If I could give Moby Dick 10 stars, I would. I was greeted by the most amazing bartender, Eddie, who was not only great at their job, but also gave fantastic dinner recommendations! If you're lucky you might even see the local nudists walk by! Seems to be frequented by many regulars/locals, but by far my favorite spot in Castro as a tourist! Don't forget to get the food offered from Hot Johnnies down the street! AMAZING!

Moby Dick Bar & Fish Tank

A friendly neighborhood bar with a notable nautical theme highlighted by a beautiful salt water fish tank above the center of the bar. A place where you feel the history of the Castro without feeling stuck in the past. Great bartenders and stiff drinks. Come to enjoy happy hour, play pool, watch the Academy Awards, or hang with friends. Dan, Eddie, John, Patrick, and Vlad are SF's best bartenders. Cheers!

Affectionately known as the "Glass Coffin" because of its enormous street-facing windows, Twin Peaks is much more than a neighborhood bar. Established in 1935, it made LGBTQ+ history in 1972 when owners Mary Ellen Cunha and Peggy Forster uncovered the windows, making it one of the first known gay bars to openly display its patrons to the street. At a time when many LGBTQ+ establishments kept their windows covered, this was a powerful statement of visibility, pride, and acceptance. The tavern was officially designated a San Francisco landmark in 2013. We love the relaxed, old-school San Francisco atmosphere. There's something wonderful about sitting with a drink, soaking up the sunshine, and watching the colorful energy of the Castro unfold right in front of you. It's a place with genuine character, a rich history, and a connection to the community that makes it special. Our only real downside? Cash only! So come prepared and save yourself a trip to the ATM. Whether you're a local or visiting San Francisco, Twin Peaks Tavern is a must-stop for a drink, a little people-watching, and a taste of LGBTQ+ history. It's a true Castro institution, and we'll keep coming back!

I genuinely do not know whether this place is supposed to be a nightclub, a poorly supervised…read morebasement party, or a social experiment designed to test how much filth and bad music one person can tolerate before leaving. If you are coming here expecting a classy San Francisco night out, lower your expectations immediately. Then lower them again. The place was dirty, smelled absolutely awful, and had none of the polish you would expect from a supposedly established nightlife venue. There was no real premium bottle service experience, no impressive top shelf liquor presentation, and absolutely nothing about this place made me feel like I was somewhere upscale. And apparently personal boundaries are optional here, because I repeatedly turned around and saw people openly engaging in sexual activity. I came here to have a drink and dance, not accidentally attend an unsanitary live performance every time I looked in a different direction. The smell deserves its own paragraph. It was BAD. Not "nightclub at the end of the evening" bad. I mean the kind of smell that makes you question the ventilation system, the cleaning schedule, and every decision that brought you through the front door. I genuinely do not know how people stay inside long enough to dance without asking themselves, "What exactly am I breathing right now?" Speaking of dancing, that brings me to the DJ. What was that? The music was so painfully bad that at some point I became convinced someone was playing a prank on the entire building. Song after song, I kept waiting for the night to finally start. It never did. Whoever was controlling the music managed to take a room full of people who came out to party and create the musical atmosphere of a punishment. San Francisco has incredible nightlife. There is absolutely no reason to spend your night suffering through this. The bartender who helped me was actually very nice, so I will give him credit. He was probably the highlight of the entire experience. Security, on the other hand, was another story. The attitude and overall experience only made the place feel even more unpleasant. Between the horrible smell, questionable cleanliness, lack of an upscale bottle service experience, bizarre atmosphere, and DJ set that felt like an act of revenge against music itself, I left wondering why I had not gone literally anywhere else. If your idea of nightlife is elegance, great drinks, good music, and an environment where you can enjoy yourself without witnessing things you never asked to see, do yourself a favor and choose another venue. There are too many great places in San Francisco to voluntarily spend your night here. One star for the bartender. The rest of the place needs prayer, bleach, ventilation, and a new DJ.

Yes please!) Atmosphere: Small, unapologetically gay, and full of personality. Drag queens: Incredible, stunning, hilarious, and unforgettable. This was my very first drag show, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. They took the time to explain how drag shows work, welcomed all the newcomers into the family, and immediately made us feel like we belonged. I was a little nervous going in, but within minutes I felt completely at home. Special shoutout to Olivia Heart--my favorite drag queen and our waitress. She'll make sure you're very well taken care of and might whisper a few sweet nothings that leave you questioning everything. An absolute icon. If you're in San Francisco, you HAVE to go. And if you can, catch the Friday or Saturday drag show--just be sure to call ahead for a reservation because it gets busy. And bring cash, because it's Cash Only! They have an ATM. Thank you everyone for such a great show.
