Cozy table next to the working fireplace

This restaurant redefines what a 5-star should be. The restaurant is cozy with a mixture of upscale and laid back vib. It's a old house that was converted to a wonderful restaurant. It still maintains the home feel but is definitely an upscale menu that changes frequently. Our waiter, Ian, was perfect. Very attentive without hovering. The food was delicious and well plated. The calamari was the best I have had in quite some time. It was tender and the portion was perfect for two people. My wife had the salmon which she loved and I had a 22oz KC strip steak which was cooked to a perfect medium rare. You will find MJ to be the perfect spot for any special occasion. I strongly recommend reservations made several days ahead of time. The restaurant is small with limited capacity but so worth giving them a try.

I took a date here for dinner. I ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and my date ordered the Shrimp and Grits. Both dishes were delicious. Robust wine list. Pros: Host was friendly. Service was excellent and very attentive. Food was excellent. Con: Parking lot is very small...My date and I were seated, on what must have been a back porch, on the first floor. It was extremely noisy and I could hardly hear my date speak. I wouldn't advise taking a date here, if you want a quiet space to get to know each other through conversation. I gave this location 3 stars due to the noise level.

My husband and I decided to try somewhere new for our wedding anniversary. We often written by this place and decided that tonight was the night and we're able to make a reservation on OpenTable. We arrived about 10 minutes before our reservation and the parking lot was already packed. The good thing is that there is ample parking across the street so you always have an option that doesn't result in too much walking. The internal downstairs portion of the restaurant is quite small and it was a bit too cool for my personal taste to sit outside on what looked to be a very enjoyable patio. I was a little disappointed by the placement of our table and a waiter, serving the other table, who kept hitting my chair without even a basic excuse me. My waitress on the other hand was bright and bubbly, very attentive, and very knowledgeable about the drink and food menu. We were promptly seated and greeted and cocktail orders taken. My husband and I decided to order the poutine appetizer, and as you can see from the empty plate photo, we devoured it before I even thought about the need to create this review. I also had a very tasty Ruby red grapefruit cocktail while my husband opted for what I believe was an apple pie flavored spirit. We were offered complementary bread and then ordered entrées of the braised rib on top sweet potatoes mash for my husband and the shrimp and grits for me. Both were awesome. And after the bread, large appetizer and t cocktails, I was able to only eat about half of the shrimp and grits serving, which was quite large. my husband cleaned his plate. We were offered a great dessert collection, which included a flourless, chocolate torte, another chocolate cake option, several cheesecake options, but given the serving size of our food, we were both too full for desserts, although they sounded awesome. I must praise our server, who was bright and bubbly, attentive, but not intrusive. Always there when we need something, but not hovering during the course of the meal. I will also know that while we were hoping for a romantic atmosphere the dining area is a little bit too crowded in the patio a little bit too loud to really call this a great location for a date night. We were also seated next to a larger party, which made it a little bit more difficult to have an intimate conversation.

Invited to a birthday celebration for a dear friend. The space upstairs was very charming and private. I arrived early and ordered a drink. Bartender recommended a cocktail. It was great- but $19.00. ( pricy for Greensboro- I almost think was a mistake) We started off with several appetizers- calamari, truffle fries, charcuterie!! I ordered the salmon. My meal was sooo goood. Chef came upstairs to check on us. Servers were all great. A+++

MJs is a restaurant that came highly recommended by a friend of ours, who knows the owners. We stopped in on a week night for dinner. We ordered the she crab soup which was full of nice chunks of crab and really very tasty! We ordered the catch of the day and the Braised Beef Short-ribs. The catch of the day was 2 soft shelled crabs lightly fried and served over coconut rice, it was a tasty dish, but not our favorite of the two. The short ribs were flavorful and so tender they were literally falling apart... So needless to say, this dish stole the night!! Also, if you are looking for a restaurant with a nice patio, this is your place. It would be the perfect spot to relax with wine after a long day at wWe will be back to try more items off the menu!

My last meal of 2021 was arguably the year's best. Somehow, during the decade-plus I spent living in Greensboro, I had never been to MJ's, but that changed when they were one of the few area restaurants still taking New Year's Eve reservations come mid-December. Regardless of the circumstances, it made for an excellent dining experience. A converted house (with limited parking), MJ's is sectioned off into a patio, a bar, and upstairs and downstairs dining areas. We ended up in the upstairs section, and it felt cozy and intimate. While MJ's runs a small menu normally, it was further pared down for New Year's Eve. That said, the few selections offered (including striped bass, Scottish salmon, prime rib) included several strong contenders. My wife and I went with an off-menu vegetable risotto (the chef can accommodate vegetarian requests, so don't be afraid to ask) and a seafood and grits, respectively, followed by chocolate cake and caramel brulee cheesecake slices for dessert. The food was all-around very good. The risotto was cooked well and offered a medley of vegetables. The seafood and grits (a scallop-added take on their usual shrimp and grits) featured a delicious sherry tomato cream sauce, savory chunks of Tasso ham, and no shortage of shrimp. The grits were creamy and smooth, almost enough to make "grit" an ironic misnomer. MJ's also offered attentive and amiable service and a decent cocktail selection, but the experience doesn't come cheaply. Entrees normally run in the mid-20s to mid-30s range, making this strictly a special occasion destination. All told, MJ's offers everything (food, service, ambiance) that makes for a great meal. Should you have an event worth celebrating, keep it in mind, especially if you enjoy the bounty of the sea

    Italian Gentleman

Hey family. I went to MJ's about two months ago. I was debating if I wanted to write a review because honestly, they don't need me to write one. Long story short, I had a doctors appointment and I wasn't far. My friend said they stopped in the day before and got a crème brûlée cheesecake. It sounded scrumptious so I was gonna pop in and have a glass of wine and get the cheesecake to go. I ordered a glass of Saint cosme Côtes du Rhône which was a fabulous red. But I'm not sure what happened if I was comfortable with the atmosphere or the faint jazz or maybe it was the wine. Something told me to stay and have dinner, so I did. I chatted with the bartender Ruthie who was super sweet and you all know I love good food and great conversation. I was sitting at the bar and I guess the stars aligned because everything was great. The only thing I will say is that I think the calamari and braised short rib was a skosh under seasoned. The calamari by itself I wouldn't have cared for but the aoli that it's paired with, made it top notch. I did need just a little salt and pepper on the braised short rib. Other than that, it was great. They have an extensive wine list and the drinks are amazing. The Italian gentleman drink is nothing to play with. I enjoyed it all. They didn't have the crème brulee cheesecake but they had an Oreo cheesecake which was great. The service was great and I love the set up. It's not really big in the inside but they do have outside seating. I'd definitely recommend making a reservation just to be on the safe side. Mondays can be busy as there are not many restaurants open on Mondays. Do check it out. You won't be disappointed.

I'm so thankful I thought of it last minute, after leaving the gym!! I called to see if they could accommodate two in an hour & a half. Todd politely answered the phone and said he could make that work. We arrived right at 6:30 and Todd, who also happened to be the host for the evening, gave us our choice of two tables. The atmosphere is busy, lots of people chatting, but you're still pretty much able to hold your own conversations. Jake was our delightful British (I think) waiter. He brought us our beverages and described what had to be 5-6 specials for the evening. Everything sounded delightful, but I've been wanting that fried flounder since day one! Jake even brought us a sample bowl of hush puppies with butter. YUMMM!!! The dinner came within 10-17 minutes, nice & hot! Everything was pretty tasty. My flounder was a little bland so I requested some salt & pepper to add more flavor. I got the chili sauce on the side because the fish is the star, not to be covered with Thai chili sauce. Todd was cleaning empty tables near us and stopped by to make sure we enjoyed our meal and would come back. We definitely will!!! Thank you Todd for helping make our girls night dinner delightful!

We finally had a chance to try Fishbones on Walker Avenue. We were looking for something casual and…read moreinviting and what we found was a rustic, engaging vibe at Fishbones. We started out with cocktails. I had a Hendricks dry martini straight up (it was delicious) and my wife had a Don't Call Me Sweetie which is mix of Hendrick's Gin, Lemon, Cucumber, Basil, Simple, Saline 15. It is very citrus heavy, so be advised. She had them cut it with a bit of cranberry to offset the citrus. For main courses, my wife had the grilled salmon and she chose sautéed garlic spinach and wasabi slaw as her sides. I ordered the shrimp and grits and my side was blackened green beans. Let's talk main course first. My wife's salmon was terrific. Flaky and moist and very tasty. My shrimp and grits was unique because it was a real balance between large pieces of shrimp and the grits. Many times you'll order this dish and end up with a pile of grits with some shrimp sprinkled on top. This version is very tasty and a really nice balance of flavors. The Cajun seasonings have it some kick, but it did not overpower. The side dishes are where we had a couple of surprises. First off the sautéed spinach was really delicious, but my wife's wasabi slaw was bland. It's a huge shocker because when you see the word wasabi, you expected to have some Asian kick to it. This did not. It was hard to even identify that it had wasabi in it. That was a disappointment. The surprise was the blackened green beans. They actually were one of the stars of the show. Their flavor and texture was just awesome. We could've ordered a huge bowl of it and eaten all of it. While it didn't need it, there was a dipping aïoli on the side, just in case we wanted to add that to the green bean experience. As I mentioned off the start, Fishbones is a very casual experience. It's very pub-like in that way. We really loved it and the wait staff, which is a team approach as anyone who passes you makes sure you're doing OK, were kind, upbeat and helpful. Even with the bland slaw, we can't lower our rating because overall the experience was terrific. We will definitely come back.

Husband and I popped in for a week night dinner after doing some holiday shopping. It's a small, but very cute place. Can sit at the bar or at one of the high top tables. I enjoy sitting by the fish tank they have toward the back. I love their peel and eat shrimp, so we decided to get a pound as an appetizer. These shrimp are the big guys and I highly recommend asking for the Old Bay seasoning on them. I tried to limit my use of the melted butter (of course yum) which wasnt too hard as their cocktail sauce is pretty darn good. The balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy in their preparation is spot on. For entrees we went with two of their most popular dishes. Hubby ordered the farm-raised catfish. This dish comes with certain sides but you can customize, he got the slaw and blackened green beans. I got the blackened ahh tuna medium rare which comes with your choice of two sides. I went for corn and the blackened green beans. My tuna was perfectly prepared and hit the spot. I received two big half pieces of golden yellow corn. It had nice subtle sweetness. Their blackened green beans are a must try. Perfectly seasoned. The creamy dipping sauce is also delish but tried to limit use. This was a lot of food and very healthy. I left plenty full with no guilt. Everything was superb. The service was also very attentive. No issue getting a table on a weeknight. There is something for everyone on the menu. I've never been able to convince myself to get anything but seafood as their specialty, but they do have options for meat-lovers and even some vegetarian and vegan options available. I bet they are good too. Be sure to look at their Facebook page and website to see their weekly Specials. After you give Fishbones a try you, like me, are going to think you should come more often each time you do!

We settled in on the small outdoor patio on a very fine spring evening for a meal that hit the spot each point along the line. Well... Maybe except for their chairs. These chairs were not the kind you would usually sit outside to eat in, more built for reclining with a drink in hand. It was not comfortable to sit forward and eat my meal. But man, was that meal ever delicious. Chips came out with three types of salsa, and we ordered the guacamole provincial to go with them as well. The chips on their own were decent, but each salsa had a unique flavor and amount of heat that kept things interesting. The guacamole was chunky and full of flavor, with a good enough portion for the four of us. When the meal came, it was clear I had won dinner. I got the "Mezcali's Best" which honestly, I think it was their best effort. Grilled steak, chicken, shrimp, onions, peppers, and zucchini in a chipotle queso sauce. Man. THAT SAUCE. That sauce just simply made the whole thing incredible. To the point when I cleared my plate, my wife had me scrape the sauce onto what was left of hers. In addition, the refried beans had an excellent flavor, I am not usually big on the beans... but this one had me wanting more. Chips used to scoop up some beans, rice, and sauce... were so so good. I would definitely come back here, probably sit inside, and order the Mezcali's best (or anything I can get that chipotle queso sauce on) again.

Chips and salsa are complimentary, with three different salsas to choose from: mild, verde, and spicy. All three had great flavor. The chips themselves weren't quite as fresh as I'd like and didn't come out hot or warmed. My server saw how much I loved the salsas and kept refilling. She was awesome! For this weekday lunch, I went with the Burrito Vallarta with chicken. Rice, beans, avocado, and a tasty hot sauce inside, with sour cream, pico de gallo, and lettuce on the side. Everything tasted fresh and the burrito as a whole was juicy and flavorful. The chicken was shredded and just a bit tough. I personally prefer freshly grilled chunks or strips, but it was still good overall. All in all, this is a nice addition to the shopping center and a solid option for Mexican food in the area.

The food was piping HOT fresh off the grease!!! Perfectly seasoned not too salty. Great customer…read moreservice!! You get bottled drinks with meal platter not watered down fountain drinks. Will definitely be coming back

If I could give 2.5 stars, I would - the staff I encountered were friendly and the food probably…read morewould have been better... but that just wasn't my experience and unfortunately first impressions matter. I had been craving a piece of fish and had been wanting to try this spot. Decided to kill two birds with one stone and ordered takeout on my way home. I ordered take out: Family size flounder Regular catfish basket with fries Sides of Mac and cheese, collards, fries A small order of hush puppies Kids shrimp meal Ordering was easy and curbside pickup *would* have been convenient, except I was only given half of my order and got all the way home before realizing. Fine - people make mistakes. I immediately called the restaurant when I noticed and was given the option to come back and pick up my order (that was actively getting colder) or order it again another day... Considering we were missing the family size flounder, I opted to go back and pickup the rest of my order. I had to go in (which I had been trying to avoid by utilizing curbside pickup) - ok, not the end of the world, but then I had to wait in line. I was given the rest of my order that had been sitting out for close to (if not more than) half an hour. The girl that was working the counter apologized and was very nice, but given no one offered to remake my food or throw in something for my troubles annoyed me. The food was cold - the batter became soggy, fries mushy, slaw warm, hush puppies mostly grease. Mac & cheese was "OK." Collards were not good. Fries, flounder, and catfish would have been good while piping hot but - ALAS - were just OK. Unimpressed and downright disappointed.
