Great work on the car! I often worry about taking a car to a non-dealer for issues but the work that was performed here was phenomenal.

Usually my reviews are long and detailed, but that's just because I know about the subject. I don't know shit about engines. All i know is to change my oil regularly and don't do anything stupid. ‍ My story begins with me checking my dipstick one day to make sure my oil wasn't low. It was. Like very low. I topped off my oil and made an appoint with the dealer who did something like place dye in my engine to locate if there was a leak. After bringing my truck back after ~100 miles it was confirmed that there was a leak. But not just one leak. Several very small leaks. Pretty much EVERY seal in my engine needed to be replaced (even the rear seal so the engine had to be completely pulled out). The dealer quoted me at $7k! I wasn't about to pay that much. I mean I'm ok with topping off my oil every couple weeks... but then I thought about how this vehicle is going to be with me for the rest of my life. It's a very rare 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser 200. You THINK you see them on the road but you're probably confusing it with a Sequoia. Land cruisers barely sold which is why they were discontinued and reintroduced as a much smaller, much less powerful suv. Long story short, I found MJM on yelp, and they quoted me at 4k. We got it fixed while we were on vacation to avoid rental car fees. When we got it back it was in like-new condition! Even my mpg improved! They used OEM seals and tested everything thoroughly. It's been 5 months and I haven't had any problems. I trust MJM and will refer anyone with engine issues to them. read more

BEST PLACE EVER!!! My son's girlfriend bought a car using all her savings. Turns out it was a bit of a lemon and needs a complete engine replacement. Had my D- series engine rebuilt from this shop. It runs great and I have put 500 miles on it so far, but there was a couple of issues I had to fix myself when I received my vehicle back. After the engine was rebuilt there was a small oil leak coming from a cylinder head bolt, I replaced the grommet and torqued the bolt to spec and it was fixed. Also, they replaced the knock sensor with an aftermarket one rather than using the OE or OEM replacement which causes my check engine light to be on. I called the shop and they offered to fix it but only if I purchase the correct sensor and bring it to them, which doesn't make much sense to me because they put the aftermarket one in and there is a warranty for the rebuild. Other than that they did a really good job and I have no other issues. My engine was far from operational before bringing it to them, with a thrown rod and a hole in the oil pan but now it runs great. This shop also gave me the lowest quote from other shops (around $300-$400 less) from competitors and they stayed true to it when it came to picking up my car. read more

Had my Astro Van upper engine overhauled at West Escondido Automotive, and after the work was completed I kept overheating and the engine was never right. West Escondido never fixed the problem and always had an excuse for the issues. The failed work cracked my exhaust manifold and I thought I was going to have to scrap the vehicle. After their warranty expired, West Escondido told me that the #6 cylindier was the problem and that we would need to do all the work again for another $4,000.00. Took it to MJM instead and they found that West Escondido Automotive, even though they charged me for the work, never machined the valve seats, so the valves were not seating correctly. Wish I had taken my van to MJM in the beginning. Its been two years now and the van runs like new. Thank you MJM for the great work and honesty. I will refer anyone to your company. read more

They are the best! My plan (when I did my first review) was to have this place as a secondary place because it is located 35-75 minutes away from my house depending on traffic. Drew continues to always be professional and always answers the phone. I continue to not understand everything about cars but I trust Drew so I continue to never stress. Drew and his team look over my car and take care of things for free (most times)? I am not sure if I'm alone but this is how I feel? I never imagined in a million years I would be driving 35-75 minutes for a repair shop. I now take all of my struggling cars to MJM. I have 3 cars that all struggle... over 1XX,XXX miles and ranging years 2005-2012 ish... Drew kind of doesn't charge me... this is how I feel. I recently brought one of my 3 nightmares in and Drew made it all good again. The door handle needed to be fix (for a year I had to roll down the windows to exit)... the car was stuck in drive and neutral... you couldn't get into PARK. I needed electrical work done cuz I used the electrical so much getting in and out of car through the window. They did charge me but I knew they would have to charge me some day. It wasn't that much (under 500) and my car was messed up but not anymore!!! I was very very very happy to pay MJM because Drew had spent the last 25 days trying to figure out why my other car stinks so much (for free). It was free because Drew is ethical beyond compare (from my experiences). I think MJM is closed on weekends but I have learned to understand that they deserve the weekend. I think it helps them be fresh at the beginning of the week (makes sense). They have less overhead??? I think??? Ask Drew if you're interested. I think this contributes to unmatched prices and warranties (I priced out engines from previous review). Since my first review there have been several other instances where Drew is the best. My other mechanic who I trust but who is more expensive. I will not say his name but his name is not Drew. This other mechanic is a good person also. I needed a new starter... I actually didn't need one but I was sole searching on behalf of a terrible car that drew had not seen. Drew said new starter.... I have 3 in stock final price under $200 ish after credit card swipe.... But my car wasn't starting so tow truck fee 35 miles was ridiculous. Drew (I think) said he'd tow for free but I think I needed to wait a day. I instead called my other mechanic, who I trust but who is expensive, and said what about a new starter.... the gentleman, who is not the mechanic... a mechanic helper said $374... I said where's the other guy I trust. Side note: Drew's other guy is cool (Mike?)... but if Mike picks up I get a call back from Drew pretty quickly.... but who am I kidding...... Drew always picks up. Drew has never taken a day off to my knowledge. He earns weekends. I whined a little to the mechanic helper and then the mechanic helper said ahhhh $295. I approved this cuz I felt I had to. From that point foreword Drew is my primary mechanic and the other guy is my secondary guy. I am big on appreciation so MJM will, after everything I have already said, appreciate your business. read more

Dropped off a small block Chevy short block to get new crank and cam bearings and re hone the cylinders. I spoke with mike originally and was quoted 7 to 10 days for completion. It sat there for 7 days and they didn't even look at it. Was talking with Drew most of the time and he kept saying we will tear it down tonight. On my third call on Day 7 spoke with Mike and he was kinda rude and said, without even tearing it down it's gonna need to bored out and pistons replaced as the cylinder walls were "ovaled" and had a deep ridge on it. I went by there on Day 9 and it still hasn't been touched so I took it back and dropped it off to Paradise Motorsports. It was done in a week. The place was a mess and when I picked it up Drew assisted me and didn't even ask why or anything. Not good customer service at all. read more

I purchased a 2008 Jeep JKU Wrangler Rubicon with a bad engine and needed a rebuild by a shop I could trust. After calling around and comparing pricing/warranties and ultimately visiting the shop and speaking with Drew I decided this was the shop to perform the work. It was estimated that the work would take 12-15 business days. I dropped off my Jeep a day or so prior to New Years. I had an ongoing dialog with Drew about how the rebuild would take place and I visited the shop to inspect progress once the engine was pulled. Drew and I had discussed aftermarket oil pump options and Drew took the time to call a particular vendor and discuss options. With his recommendation I approved the oil pump. Because of the added cost, Drew shared that he would allow me to purchase some of the other needed parts directly and avoid his mark-up. This went a long way toward insuring my satisfaction with the process. During one visit to the shop I found a component not cleaned to my satisfaction and brought this up with Drew. Later that day he had his technician tear down and redo the component to make certain that I was fully satisfied. The rebuild process took longer than anticipated but the delay was explained in regular updates. After taking delivery I had an oil pressure "blip" and quickly shut off the Jeep and called Drew. He immediately had a tow truck sent to pick up the Jeep. After testing and test-driving it was concluded that nothing was wrong and I again took delivery. I am now driving within the 500-mile break-in period. I would highly recommend MJM Engines. I had the pleasure of working with MJM Engines recently. I have a 1956 Ford F100 that I have had for over 25 years. My 302 engine had just worn out and needed a rebuild. I shopped around and likes the price MJM Engines offered. I contacted them and made arrangements for them to come to my house in Oceanside to pick up my engine after I removed it from the truck. They were very professional but friendly, like we have been friends for years. I think one the things I liked best about MJM Engines is that they didn't treat me like I'm an idiot like a couple of other shops did. Dropped off a set of 302 heads and a block for cleaning and machine work. The machine work looked good. The cleaning of the block was not performed well at all. Oil passages in the block were blocked solid in several areas. Returned the block for additional cleaning. They did clean the block again however the cleaning was still poor quality. Spent several hours doing what I paid them to do. Can't have dirty parts and blocked oil passages if you're doing a rebuild. Would not take another there just due to the poor quality of the cleaning. read more

I had a couple issues that brought concern after I received the vehicle back. Very shady business. I took my classic ford Bronco to these guys with the intent of having a completely brand new engine put in my truck. I was lured in with their 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. When I asked for a quote on a new engine it sounded good, I scheduled a meeting and the guy was really cool. I repeatedly asked for a new engine, i really wanted a brand new one in my Bronco. I was willing to pay for it, but instead I basically got slippery sloped into them basically rebuilding my engine. The rebuild took forever and it seemed like every other day, they were calling me telling me that I needed to pay more money to have the job done right. When they finally finished the job, the truck could barely run and I paid thousands more than the original quote, I couldn't believe it. They basically told me that the reason it would barely idle was because of the carb. So I spent more money and purchased a new carb, they put it on and it still ran like crap, it would barely idle and it was backfiring. They came up with another excuse and basically said that I needed to take it to a place that specializes in carbs. What kind of engine builder can't set up a brand new carb???????? I could not believe it. I should have walked right out of this place when I saw the lawsuit pinned in the bulletin board there. I eventually took my classsic Bronco to a reputable shop, and they told me something was wrong with the rebuild as the compression was low in half he cylinders. When I called these guys to look at my Bronco for the warranty, they constantly told me that the mechanic was out on vacation and i would have to wait. After constantly being turned away, I gave up. I don't want to waste any time dealing with these crooks anymore so I am spending thousands more having their shoddy work re-done. I would never let them touch my Bronco again. These guys are crooks. They quoted me a price and after the repairs started, they gouged me for thousands more than the original quote. Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS! read more

Wow, where do I start? Called these guys, Drew answered, and I got a ballpark estimate for a blown head gasket replacement. He gave me a very low quote, so I said " how much will it be if I need machining of the heads etc." He informed that it was included. Being skeptical, I went in for a written expecting some sort of bait, and switch. Not only was his ballpark within 3 dollars of the written, it included a new thermostat, 2 new sets of head bolts, oil filter, oil, cleaning spark plugs, replacement of coolant, as well as pressure checking everything. These are always the add on items from most mechanics! Quoted me about a week start to finish. So I left it, and crossed my fingers. A day later I get a phone call telling g me they found a few other things. Broken motor mount, and a couple other unrelated things. I gave authorization. When I inspected the invoice later, they charged me less than I could have bought the parts for as a dyi mechanic. Two days later it was ready for pickup. I thought this must be a mistake as I had been quoted a full week without the other found deficiencies, but no. These guys are just super efficient. I had dropped it late on a Monday, and retrieved it the following thursday. Two months later, and it has never run better. Toms of power, even my fuel economy has gone up by more than 2 mpg. I took my 97 jeep tj 4.0 6 cyl engine down for a rebuild. I got it back and other than a rear main seal leaking it held up for a bit.... 2k miles to be exact. Unfortunately that 2k miles took almost 3 yrs to get to since it's a trailer queen. I'm a slow, low rpm driver and had it built stock so it'll last another 140k miles. Well,,, 2 wks ago I collapsed a #2 intake lifter. A 5 dollar lifter is now costing me about 800.00 because I have to get all new lifters, a new cam, new chain, new push rods, fluids. Luckily I can do all of this myself but still. Not to happy. Not sure if they used lesser quality parts or what but it shouldn't of thrown a lifter. read more

MJM Engines did an outstanding job on getting my 2007 GMC Envoy engine rebuilt and back on the road in a timely manner. I could've scrapped the SUV and bought another...but the vehicle was in great shape (other than the blown engine). My decision came down to whether or not keeping it made financial sense (after factoring in the total cost of repair, car rental, time, and inconvenience). Drew provided excellent customer service throughout the whole process and he maintained the quote that his boss (Mike/MJM Owner) had given me over the phone. Drew kept me aware of what they were doing during the repair process and identified options available to optimize the performance of my engine. The total cost (including some upgrade options that I agreed to have done) were "significantly" more affordable than various estimates I received from the OEM dealership and some other local competitors. To be honest, if I were to look at MJM Engines from say a local competitors perspective...I could see MJM's niche in the auto service market as an opportunity to enhance my own business by simply farming all my engine rebuilding work out to MJM. Odds are...just by providing my customers that added convienence along with an unbeatable price and warranty, I would potentially preserve their loyalty and future business.
