For a change I don't hear the people here talking about their personal lives or gossiping while doing my teeth.

In late July 2020 I was wildly diggin' into some Frrrrrried Chicken, as I was crazy hungry due to missing my breakfast & lunch that day. As I bit into one of my fried chicken pieces I bought from Times Supermarket, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in one of my tooth! Aiyah! The pain was brief, as it went away as quickly as it came, so I really didn't think anything of it, but by the next day I suddenly developed a small abscess on my gums. YIKES!!! Luckily for me, I have a great dentist as he is an old friend & classmate of mines, and after he squeezed me in on a last minute appointment to check out my teeth. My dentist took an x-ray and found out that I had actually fractured one of the roots on my tooth when I bit into that fried chicken. (Insert sad panda face here!) My dentist then gave me a prescription for some antibiotics, and referred me to a specialist. Unfortunately for me, the root that I busted was on one of my tooth that I had a bridge on, so that's how my paths crossed with Dr. Kenneth Choy who works at Honolulu Periodontics & Impants. I must give 10 stars to Dr. Choy, as he is highly skilled in what he does. Dr. Choy had the task of cutting my gums, & peeling back my gums to remove my tooth & fractured root (this is called a root amputation) yet he had the obstacle of keeping my bridge in place without disturbing it. My operation went pretty smoothly with minimum pain, and after the task was done, Dr. Choy was really great in giving instructions on what to do after my operation, and what to expect. Dr. Choy even called me up that evening (on his own time) to check on me, to see how I was doing after my surgery (which was very caring of him). Of course nobody wants to go through any kind of surgery, but if it's a must..........hopefully you'll get referred to Dr. Kenneth Choy, as he is highly skilled and a great doctor.

The receptionist was really friendly and patiently waited (& assisted) my mother fill all the required forms. After all the administrative process was out of the way, we waited only a short time before the dental assistant came out, walked my mother (patient) a short distance from the waiting area, and to the nearby station. I watched as he put his gloves on before conducting what seemed like a normal routine to him. He reviewed the patient file that was just turned in to the receptionist, and entered vitals in a computer in the workstation. Another dental assistant joined them shortly after. She introduced herself to my mother before asking a few questions then proceeded to conduct an evaluation of her teeth. She verbalized her findings to the dental assistant who was still working from the computer (I assume he was inputting the info into the system). Once the exam was done, the dental assistant discussed her findings with my mother. I was able to overhear most of the conversation from the waiting area. It was a bit hard to hear because of the music playing but, I got the general gist of the conversation. Needless to say, patient privacy wasn't a big consideration during the layout of the offices and dental chairs. After the exam and discussion, the dental assistant gathered some dental hygiene items, toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, and gave my mother a small goodie bag. She waited another few minutes before the dentist came over accompanied by a third dental assistant (the other two where now assisting other patients). They both walked away seemingly to consult on another patient but came back shortly after. Now attending to my mother, the dentist reviewed her files then conducted his own evaluation. Overall the processes was thoroughly conducted, from the administrative intake to the dental evaluation. The only negative aspect is the open style, although it provides a great view, it can create some patient privacy issues.

My experience with the dentist Michael Umaki has left me shocked and saddened by his lack of professionalism. He advised that I get about 6 teeth extracted. Only one of the those teeth bothered me, so I agreed to that one extraction. During that appointment, I was left waiting for one hour in the dental chair while I heard and saw Dr. Umaki socializing. After he finally attended to me, he provided no explanation or apology for the wait. During my follow-up visit, I asked if there had been an emergency that caused the hour long wait and was told that there had been no emergency. I asked if they had double-booked and that was denied. Again, no explanation or apology was given, and I felt as if my time is not important to them. At a later appointment, I again was told that Umaki wanted to extract several other teeth, none of which bother me in any way and removing them would render me unable to eat solid food. He showed no interest whatsoever about how I would eat and what would need to be done regarding a full or partial denture (I am not a candidate for implants which is a treatment Umaki provides). I told them that I was not ready to have the other teeth extracted and wanted to consult with my other dentist. Soon after that appointment I received a call from one of the office staff telling me that I was being "released", meaning they refused to treat me because I did not agree to the additional extractions. I deemed their conduct to be not only unprofessional, but perhaps unethical, possibly violating the fundamental principles of patient autonomy, nonmaleficence, and beneficence listed in the American Dental Association's Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct, which has been adopted by the Hawaii Dental Association.

Long story short: Two weeks before my cleaning 7/7/23 I called for an estimate and confirm if still had benefits to cover annual cleanings. In which Harriet, replied I can call my own insurance to check. She also gave me the medical billing code to check myself? What type of practice tells you to get your exam preapproved with insurance yourself? This is all done by institution in order to give you an estimate/out pocket costs. On Harriet's advice and insistence this is should all be done by me - I called hds to check my benefits. They said I had one covered cleaning left on my coverage. Thinking I had coverage, I proceeded to show up my appt. 7/7/23. Come to find out bc they are periodontal, this exam goes under 'periodontal maintenance.' So Harriet saids my insurance wouldn't cover and I'd had to pay out pocket around $173 for cleaning. Then she also makes insinuating remark "all I care about is money." Why wouldn't I use my insurance if I have insurance? After back and forth with her calling as well as me calling my insurance at iha's office, come to find out I do have coverage for periodontive maintenance up to 70% as long as I had history of Dr. Iha seeing me. Needless to say all this was waste of my time!! Took off work early for nothing. All this should've been taken care of when I called for estimate two weeks prior to my exam... hence why it's called PRE- authorization? Def won't be coming here again. Sure there's def other better periodontists who want my business.
