Ai-yai--yai! That was the most EXPENSIVE piece of Frrrrrrried Chicken I've ever eaten, and that's how I ended up having to do surgery, and visiting this place called - Honolulu Periodontics & Implants! In late July 2020 I was wildly diggin' into some Frrrrrried Chicken, as I was crazy hungry due to missing my breakfast & lunch that day. As I bit into one of my fried chicken pieces I bought from Times Supermarket, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in one of my tooth! Aiyah! The pain was brief, as it went away as quickly as it came, so I really didn't think anything of it, but by the next day I suddenly developed a small abscess on my gums. YIKES!!! Luckily for me, I have a great dentist as he is an old friend & classmate of mines, and after he squeezed me in on a last minute appointment to check out my teeth. My dentist took an x-ray and found out that I had actually fractured one of the roots on my tooth when I bit into that fried chicken. (Insert sad panda face here!) My dentist then gave me a prescription for some antibiotics, and referred me to a specialist. Unfortunately for me, the root that I busted was on one of my tooth that I had a bridge on, so that's how my paths crossed with Dr. Kenneth Choy who works at Honolulu Periodontics & Impants. I must give 10 stars to Dr. Choy, as he is highly skilled in what he does. Dr. Choy had the task of cutting my gums, & peeling back my gums to remove my tooth & fractured root (this is called a root amputation) yet he had the obstacle of keeping my bridge in place without disturbing it. My operation went pretty smoothly with minimum pain, and after the task was done, Dr. Choy was really great in giving instructions on what to do after my operation, and what to expect. Dr. Choy even called me up that evening (on his own time) to check on me, to see how I was doing after my surgery (which was very caring of him). Of course nobody wants to go through any kind of surgery, but if it's a must..........hopefully you'll get referred to Dr. Kenneth Choy, as he is highly skilled and a great doctor. read more

BLUF - Thank you Dr. Liao!! No pain! You worked with me and my dental angst ! You did GREAT work!! OMG!! My teeth must be giving me payback for something I did in a prior life... Thank you so much Dr. Furuya (Dr. Liao's predecessor) for my first implants (2x) due to failed root canals and crowns. I went to see Dr. Liao who has taken over since Dr. Furuya's retirement and I am SO HAPPY . I went to fix another failed root canal and crown (tooth number 31 to be exact) with a huge abscess on the gum (a tooth that had 2 previous crowns and a root canal and the worst PAIN from previous root canal surgery (different dentist) that I have ever experienced in my life where I was told that I levitated (similar to raising from the chair like in a magic show). Dr. Liao understood my angst at taking this nasty tooth out and prepping it for an implant. He was so kind and patient dealing with my dental pain PTSD issues. The procedure was not simple and he worked through it with constant updates to me about what he was doing and was going to do while under process. Dr Choy is a professional who takes the time to explain the entire procedure. All of the staff are very friendly, helpful, and caring! Cracked my tooth- unfortunately it will require an implant. Dr Choy from consultation to procedure provided excellent work and follow up. Implant costs are reasonable and explained at every procedure. Payment plans available and detailed explanation of costs. Dr Liao is very kind and caring. With his consultation, Dr Liao asks if you have any questions or concerns and answers every question. Prior to any procedure, he ensures you are comfortable and tells you what to expect. He ensures you are never uncomfortable. Been going to Dr Furuya since I was referred to him by my regular dentist Dr Wong From the bone graph to the gum surgery and then the implant it was not a bad experience. I like Dr Furuya's style and he explains everything well. After every procedure he followed up in the evening with a call just to make sure you're okay He has a good staff and that's important to me because if the staff sucked then I would have bailed (I've dumped a doctor before because her staff sucked. ) His hygienist is Robyn and she's really good. I was referred to Dr Choy by my dentist, Dr Jaclyn Palola. They were able to schedule a visit quickly and at a great time (7:30am). I ended up being late because I went to the wrong hospital (duh!) but they were very understanding and accommodating. Kristi helped get me set up and Dr Choy was personable and friendly. I had a tooth extracted and implant placed by Dr. Furuya. Office staff is very friendly and efficient. This office has been well planned in every detail and runs like clockwork. They are very organized which is rare. I was taken in at the scheduled time. The clinical staff was also friendly and efficient. It seemed like my comfort was a priority. Dr. Furuya made sure I was comfortable during the procedure and called me that evening to make sure everything was ok. I have received follow up phone calls at other clinics or doctors offices, but usually it's from a staff member, never the doctor himself. During the procedure, I got a text from the pharmacy telling me my prescriptions were ready. Did I mention they are organized? How many times have you felt frustrated because you waited way past your appointment time before seeing the doctor? How many times have you waited at the pharmacy because your prescription wasn't called in yet? How many times have you tolerated rude or inefficient staff because you like the doctor you're seeing? Dr. Furuya did great dental work for my mom. I know because I drive my mom to her appointments and I sit in on the visits since mom speaks Japanese and little English. They also have a dental staff member who is a Japanese interpreter also at no additional fee who serviced us on our consultation. Dr. Furuya is very patient explaining the procedure and even today, a year latter after the one year check l-up, my mom is happy with the results. The office is very clean, nice waiting room, nice chairs and big flat screen tv playing nicely produced music videos at low volume. Front desk staff, Lauren is very cheerful and professional. I was able to have a major portion of my dental implant done in one visit. From X-ray, extraction, cleaning, to consultation and insertion of new implant. Dr. Furuya's expertise, experience and knowledge was instrumental in a very successful visit. Now a 4-6 month wait for the bone to grow around the implant and fitting for a new implant tooth and I'll be fitted with a stronger and lasting tooth. It is my pleasure to be able to write a review for Dr. Kenneth Choy, and Honolulu Periodontics & Implants. I was recently diagnosed with some severe tooth decay to two adjacent molars, which I was informed would require extraction by an Oral Surgeon. Following some extensive on-line research of my options regarding available Oral Surgeons, I chose to reach out to Honolulu Periodontics and Implants. I was able to communicate with their office via both phone and email, which made scheduling an appointment much easier. As one of the teeth became markedly more painful, his office immediately scheduled me for an 'emergency' appointment, when informed of my discomfort. Rather than waiting weeks for these very popular surgeons, I was scheduled to be seen in a few days. From the front desk reception staff, to the technicians performing x-rays and assisting during procedures, I was treated with friendliness, care and concern. Following a review of the x-rays, Dr. Choy, aware that I wished to keep the teeth if possible, recommended extraction of only one of the two severely decayed teeth, with the plan to better expose the cavity on the other tooth by manipulating the gum line. This would give me a chance to see if I could avoid extraction of that tooth. During that same visit, we proceeded with the extraction of the most seriously decayed tooth. Having never had a tooth extraction (except for my 4 wisdom teeth under sedation over 50 years ago), I was surprised at how effectively he and his staff managed to minimize my discomfort. Dr. Choy took the time to explain his strategy for managing both teeth, and entertained all of my questions and concerns. The molar was extracted succesfully by the skilled hands of Dr. Choy, and I was discharged home with clear instructions on what to do, and what not to do. I managed the minimal pain with a few doses of Ibuprofen. I never experienced significant pain, bleeding or discomfort. Dr. Choy even called me at home to check on my progress, and offered his personal cell phone number to call should I have the need. I've already completed my one week follow-up with Dr. Choy, and have remained pain free and comfortable. I do plan on returning to see Dr. Choy for an eventual implant, and highly recommend him and his staff for their expert skills and care. read more

Dr Choy rehabilitated my mouth. And he also saved me from decades of dental problems to come. I presented to Dr Choy in Seattle with dentition that hadn't had major (nor indeed enough minor) maintenance for a number of years. As well as wide-spread gingivitis (gum disease which hadn't particularly troubled me, but did have the potential to cause multiple tooth losses/deaths in time), I had a tooth that had become infected, died and was now abscessing the bone around it, so needed immediate extraction and infection control. Dr Choy took the offending tooth out both neatly and painlessly, and followed up with a graft to strengthen the supporting bone in preparation for the implant we agreed upon. In addition, there was extensive work below the gumline to eradicate my gingivitis, again carried out without any pain issues. At every step along the way to the healthier, more in-control, mouth I now have, Dr Choy was diligent, skilful and communicative. He always intelligibly explained and showed me onscreen what he found. He covered the treatment options and likely outcomes, and then followed through in a way that made me feel that he and I were successful partners in getting my mouth back into the shape to last me several more decades. One other thing - Dr Choy had to do a number of dental surgeries over the course of my treatment. He was assiduous in pain-control during these, and remarkably, his gentle work meant that in EVERY case, without exception, I was perfectly comfortable post-op even without taking the pain medications that he had prescribed. My wife is an ex-OR nurse, and as such she remarked that the surgeon must have been deft indeed for me to consistently have such comfortable and quick-healing post-op experiences. I also appreciated Dr Choy's follow-up phone call in the evening after every significant procedure. If you want a healthier and long-term trouble-free mouth (and who wouldn't?) then I whole-heartedly recommend Dr Choy as a doctor you can trust for the best experience and the best outcome. I would go to him again without hesitation - such a pity for me he now lives in Honolulu! read more
