I love the aesthetic of this place with the paintings that are all around, and I believe that they are for sale! This place has a lot of potential, especially if you are bringing a large group of people. I ordered the Red Snapper with jollof rice to go. I don't know how I hadn't heard of this spot before, it's in the middle of a shopping center and easy to miss so i'm glad I came across it. The food is delicious! Everything is fresh and prepared to order. I had the tacos for the first time a couple months ago and have been back once a month every since. I have even raved so much my friends have become fans. I highly reccommend the suya tacos, they come with jallof rice, cheese and onions. A standard order comes with two which is more than enough since they pack the taco to the max. I really enjoyed my food here! The ambiance is very casual. The food took a while to come out, I think something was going on in the kitchen, plus a lot of people were there for the soccer game. I've been here a few times, and I've enjoyed all my experiences. You can request to do group paint and sips as well. Just ask the Manager Calisma. Every year, I try and find a new (to me) Black-owned business to support for Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) for Kwanzaa. I've known for a while this was going to be the spot I'd choose for 2023. What shocked me is that I hadn't heard of it until recently... do you know how much I used to hang out in Beltsville? LAX and Costco are literally right across the street too! They started a promotion for a 2-hour All You Can Eat for a lot of their food options (no suya tacos or pizza, definitely on my list for next time), so I knew I would be exploring that. I arrived around 7:00, and they close at 9:00... so just enough time for the AYCE deal! It's on the end of a strip of restaurants and stores, and parking is easy. I walked right in, and there was only one person sitting at the bar (had chairs, but room for more). I could tell that's also where you order food. There were roses hanging from the ceiling, and there were a bunch of tables and long couches to sit at. Huge speakers were posted up against the wall, contributing even more to the lounge vibes. Leaves me wondering when it turns into a party space, because the potential is definitely there. Lovely art lined the walls, and apparently it's for sale. You just need to talk to one of the staff or contact the artist directly. There was also a small rack of clothes next to the bar. After taking all of this in, I decided to just sit where I knew I would be eating. The guy at the bar looked like he was waiting for an order, and I did see a bell to ring, but I didn't want to be that guy. When someone came out from the kitchen to bring the guy's (large) order, I walked up and started looking at the menu. I said I wanted to do the AYCE, and started with the suya, spinach and plantain. I thought it was going to be small portions since it's AYCE... wooo boy was I wrong. Full plate came out for me, and it was all flavorful and delicious! I drank some water and prepared for round 2... more spinach, but I also got jollof rice and peanut soup. My girlfriend was really craving some suya. Being a man who loves some suya as well, I couldn't help but agree that stopping for some was a good idea. We were already in the area for a birthday so we stopped by. This is a place she had been plenty of times but I had never had. We ordered the suya tacos, the suya and jollof, and some plantains. The suya tacos were amazing. With the added pepper, it was spicy and an immediate favorite. I'm still thinking about it a week later. The suya and jollof was also delicious. The jollof was exactly what I expect from a restaurant jollof. It's well flavored but not too spicy or overpowering. The plantains were some of my favorite because they weren't super oily. I personally don't like super oily plantains. The service was good. It took a little bit (like 30 mins) to get our food but I think it was worth the wait. One of the guys that works there checked on us to see how we liked the food and if we needed anything additional. The ambiance is that of a family owned African restaurant. There was a bunch of art painted by the owners daughter (who's the manager btw) and it looks amazing! There's bigger booths as well as some regular tables depending on your group size. I went here to support the business after seeing food reviewer Mr. Chimetime review! The food was pretty good with the exception of the suya pizza...which was AWSOME! The goat pepper soup was really spicy with just a few pieces of goat meat, it was just ok. The suya beef was overpriced with the small amount we got. The egusi was the star of the show which my granddaughter loved with our fufu(really mine but I had to share with her )! Overall this place was very clean and the owner and the staff was super nice ! If there's a Black/African-owned restaurant you're looking to support, pull up to Miya Lounge & Restaurant. I went once in 2020 and once again recently. Here are some thoughts about what I know about Miya Lounge and my experience: So the name of the restaurant is misleading because I think often times when people hear 'lounge' they think of a place that has alcohol/hookah. This place has neither. If you truly care about good food and not the aesthetics at all, then you will really enjoy this place. It's definitely more of a carryout spot, but there are plenty of tables and seats to sit at if you want to relax. I will say, if you also want your food quickly, call in your order first, because you are not going to receive it quickly (the dishes definitely take time to prepare). When it comes to the food, they definitely have some of the best suya in the area. I wasn't the biggest fan of the suya tacos though. I think the cheese takes away from the flavor of the suya and when it comes to jollof rice, I think it could use more flavor and spice, but I may be biased because I'm Nigerian lol. The suya pizza was a fish suya pizza and it was really good. It was not fishy at all and had good flavor. The goat pepper soup was delicious. The goat was nice and tender. This is a review after my second time having food from this establishment. The first time, I was like this is soooo good. It was a soft taco. It's their own version of a taco with rice, chicken or beef, cheese and vegetables. I love veggies, so I was disappointed the second time I ordered when more rice and less vegetables greeted my tongue. I knew something was missing. Took a look and saw few green or yellow (onions). The staff was very friendly. I got to chat with the owner & she gave me some insight into the menu. She was the one that created the suya tacos. There was a gentleman inside, who was also on staff; he said he was the inspiration for the dish. The owner said that wasn't true. LOL. Since it was taco Tuesday, I got the suya tacos with beef and a side of jollof rice. I was told my order would take about 15 minutes but it only took maybe 7 to 10 minutes. The tacos are a nice size. I'll probably only eat one and have it with a salad. The beef was tasty and it taste like it may have been grilled or something. I detected a hint of charcoal. It was also topped with a few peppers and some cheese. The rice was good but it doesn't taste like any jollof rice I've ever tasted. No complaints. It was a filling meal with a little bit of spice, very little. My spice level has deteriorated over the years. It also came with a side of some spicy sauce in a very small container. Let me warn you, use that sauce at your own risk. I dipped my fork into the sauce and tasted it, and it was spicy enough to let me know that I probably should not be pour it on my food. The wait for a takeout small order was more like 30 minutes rather than 20 minutes as their website states. Food: The Jolloff rice was not tasty, rice grains were hard and dry. It tasted as though it was not freshly made, seemed to be warmed over and barely, as it was lukewarm. The fried plantains I ordered were tasty and looked as though they were freshly made. I also ordered beef patties, the content inside patties did not look appetizing at all, so I cannot say anything about the taste of it. The food was great ! I got the suya tacos which had suya jollof and cheese and onions in it. I also got the jollof and suya and goat meat. Everything was great ! The only downside is the suya isn't spicy at all and it would make the experience 10 times better maybe asking if customers want the suya mild or spicy and mild being how you have it now. If you enjoy party jollof you will definitely enjoy their jollof rice ! The goat was spicy to perfection it was just too tough. I know all African countries cook their goat different but a more tender fall of the bone goat would be more exciting. My first time here, but it will NOT be my last. Small but clean, great music playing Afro Beats, and most importantly, the food was very good. I had the grilled fish(Croaker) which was grilled perfectly, topped with a green sauce that had an almost citrusy taste. The Jollof rice was good which was a good match with the fish. We have been wanting to try this place for a looooong time. The selection of West African food seemed really strong! It's just an hour away from us if traffic and weather are good. We ordered today and both traffic and weather were against us. I placed the order online and my partner went to pick it up on the way home from running an errand. I placed the order at 1:52. When my partner arrived at 3:00, staff said they had no record of the order. They didn't even check the system, according to my partner. Just said they'd had no online orders through that portal at all. Meanwhile they had confirmed the order and charged my card. Even after seeing confirmation texts and emails, they denied I had placed the order and told me to connect with the online ordering platform for a refund. I called the online platform and they called the retailer. Thus a miracle occurred, where the restaurant suddenly realized they HAD confirmed our order and HAD indeed charged our card for it, despite refusing to fulfill it. We got the order about 30 minutes later. We had the Suya Pizza and Suya tacos for fun. The pizza is decent. The tacos are absurd. They are burrito wraps stuffed with what appears to be the pizza topping. They do not come with the taco toppings described on the menu. They are overcooked, as is the suya pizza. (Please note that the staff packed the pizza box vertically in a to-go bag as though vertical storage and pizza have ever been friends.) We also got the Eru with goat. The oil in the dish was rancid. The whole dish smelled like a hot dumpster. It was inedible; we had to throw it away. The fufu was fine but we had nothing to eat it with. And we got the suya and jollof rice. The jollof rice was fine. The suya was sparse and fatty. I would not order it or the Eru (at all) ever again. We were really looking forward to this food but were disappointed by it. We had no expectation of customer service but it turns out it was also terrible. There were other dishes we wanted to try and we were excited about the legacy of the restaurant and its owners but we will not be returning here. EDIT: We wanted the oil in the Eru dish! We just wished it hadn't been spoiled. We are not unfamiliar with the cuisine and the smell was actually rotten. We are extremely disappointed at the response from the business. EDIT 2: If the business would like us to bring the dish back fully refrigerated after less than 24 hours and confirm that the rancid smell and flavor are in fact culinary innovations, we would love to see this take place live. The stew is sitting on our stovetop and it smells like a hot landfill. Please let me know if I should plan to bring it in tomorrow for further evaluation. The flavors are good when they aren't spoiled and we want to support businesses that are bringing the melting pot that is our area to life. We have been so excited to find new places and so far it's the best jollof rice we have had. But we were so let down by the customer service and the other dishes. I went to a paint nite event at another venue hosted by street artist, Calisma. I have not a creative or artistic bone in my body, but my painting came out looking really good. I was excited to hear she and her family were opening a a restaurant so I kept in touch. Fast forward, I follow Calisma on social media and saw tons of her work. Some for sale, some posted in buyers' homes, some in her now open restaurant, every piece was DOPE! I reached out about a painting she had a group do at a private paint nite, it was too cute! She told me pick a date, I invited some friends, she opened it to the public with a $10 food discount, and it was on. Everything you need to paint is included (canvas, paints, brushes, smock). The canvas is lightly pre-sketched so there's really no way you can totally bomb the entire painting. Calisma is very patient and so sweet. She gives guided instruction, but you work independently at your own pace. Some people came late and breezed thru. I am always the last person to finish, but I am always thrilled with my finished product. Now onto the food. I am a very picky eater and I've never tried any African food before. Lots of people talk about jollof rice and wanted to try, but I wasn't sure what to pair it with. I've heard people talk about "suya" but I didn't know if it was a general type of food or a specific dish. Calisma explained what suya was and it sounded kinda like a spicy kebab/pepper steak hybrid. I tried it and couldn't get enough, it was delicious! I think there could be slight variations in the spices and preparation depending upon country of origin. Calisma and her family are from Cameroon, in case that matters for your palate. I love the classes, I loved the food, a double win for me! I have my eyes on another painting I've seen her do in past classes. When she offers another class featuring that painting I'll be coming back again. We order the whole tilapia with plantain, the egusi soup with chicken, and the suya with jollof rice. Each dish tasted great and the fish was super fresh. The restaurant has such an inviting atmosphere with bomb music. My husband and I started off with the goat which was cooked to perfection paired with nice spicy sauce on the side. We both had the Suya and Jollof as our main entree. The Suya was full of spice and so tendered. The best Suya I have from a restaurant in a long time. The Jollof was good which had more spice but understand not everyone likes their jollof rice spicy so the sauce on the side definitely brought it to life. Although there isn't outdoor seating, the tables inside are pretty spaced out. The employees wear masks and there's hand sanitizer at the counter. The food is AMAZING. I had the pepper fish soup and the suya burrito, which I don't think is on the actual menu. The fish did had bones in it, which is to be expected of African food, but it was big and meaty.
