An Absolutely Incredible Dining Experience at Mixtli for my husband's birthday. My husband and I dined at Mixtli for his birthday with my brother in love in June (sorry late post), and what an incredible experience. From the moment we arrived, the intimacy of the space let me know we were in for a cozy, intimate experience. After being seated (reservation was at 6) we watched the chefs in the open kitchen busily preparing meals in near silence, but with perfection. Our evening was filled with culinary artistry (which I appreciated as I also took culinary lessons when I retired from the military), storytelling, impeccable presentations, and teamwork. Chef Christian, one of the many that introduced our small courses, left no crumbs as he described the Mexican theme of our courses. What impressed me most was watching the entire team work together so seamlessly and with almost no talking. Every person had a role, and the coordination between the kitchen and the dining room was absolutely amazing. You would think it was an episode on the Food Network as they seemed very passionate describing our meals, moved with precision, and timed our meals perfectly so that we didn't wait too long in between meals. Our Mixologist described the story behind the drinks she prepared for our food and this made the experience even better. Each course wasn't simply placed in front of us, it was introduced with history, culture, and meaning. While living in San Antonio, I have dined on several Mexican cuisines, but these pairings were next level. Over the evening, we were taken on a journey through Mexican cuisine, learning about the inspiration behind what we were eating while experiencing flavors and presentations that were award winning. The presentation of each course was beautiful almost too beautiful to eat ( photos attached for your viewing pleasure) yes Yelpers, a work of art. And with each meal we were given new utensils that prepared us for the next taste, I would add the flavors were just as impressive as the presentation. For my husband's birthday, Mixtli gave us the gift, an experience we will remember. This is not simply a restaurant you visit for a meal; it is a place you visit to experience food as art, history, culture, and storytelling. 5 STARs from us, we are over the moon, and if you are celebrating a special occasion or simply consider yourself a true foodie, while pricy, Mixtli is absolutely worth experiencing and with no wait and great customer service we were happy. Wow, just wow! Those of us fr CA have our preconceived notions of what Mexican food is and how Tex-Mex (or any Mexican food in TX) just isn't the same...or right. Well, colour me wrong. The dinner here at Mixtli took a few bites, but then I was suddenly convinced and overwhelmed by the soulfulness of their dishes. We were there for the spring La Vecindad menu. Each dish was explained by the way of its humble, storied origins that were now elevated and modernised into these perfect flavour bombs. It wasn't just the food. The entire staff was warm and welcoming; professional, yet approachable and kind. The ambiance was the same: warm and welcoming, yet chic and upscale. This is definitely worth a visit. Go if you can. To celebrate or to have an adult night out. They have a well-earned Michelin star...and they're a finalist for the 2026 James Beard award for Outstanding Restaurant (to be awarded in June). read more

Mixtli is a dining experience full of heart. While this particular menu wasn't my absolute favorite, I loved the concept and the thoughtfulness behind each dish. The foie gras foam was a standout--absolutely delicious. The wine pairings were excellent throughout, though the fortified wine at the end didn't quite hit the mark for me. It was super sweet and the dessert course was also super sweet. My palette was spent and my stomach was full. What really made the evening special was the front-of-house team--they took exceptional care of us and made the experience feel personal and welcoming. read more

Excellent service and an intriguing menu were highlights during my dinner at Mixtli. Unfortunately, other key elements fell short. I got to experience the La Vecindad theme, which led me to expect the bold, spicy flavors of el DF circa 1950. To start, the music was distractingly inconsistent - first it was fun Latin beats then random hip hop and pop - it didnt mesh well with the menu theme, for me. Not a huge deal, but worth mentioning as this is a fine dining spot where details do matter. Of the nine bites and courses, many were too subtly seasoned and unremarkable. The best was the Mujeres del Maíz, which was creatively composed and brought wonderful sweet and spicy notes while staying true to the essence of a tamal. I liked the well seasoned and succulent beef on the pambazo as well as the dessert textures. Otherwise, sadly, I was not impressed by the rest. read more

I did not take pics of the food as I wanted to enjoy the experience to the fullest. Went during "La Conquista: 1519" last year and they hooked it up. Managed to snag one of the last tables for the night and my gf and I were impressed. This single handily is the best Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. They not only gift you a meal from heaven for each course, they explain it with such passion and understanding of the Mexican culture and the complexities of its troubled past which have helped define what Mexican food is today. I had a red sauce which transported me to my grandma's house in Mexico. Nearly shed a tear. We did one cocktail pairing and went awol for the other and throughly enjoyed the experience. The price tag is steep but you get what you pay for. A unique experience at a San Antonio Michelin Star rated restaurant with a staff who is extremely knowledgeable at what they do. The kitchen is open. You can see each and every person doing their thing. Pretty sure the majority of the people working brought a course each. The hookup was the coffee at the end. We were the last table left at end of night and they gave us a coffee to go which we enjoyed the next morning. The other experience you can have and you don't need a reservation for is the bar. If you are coming in from out of town, this is one of the top bar spots to try. If you like cocktails with a twist, this spot will do the trick. Love the decor inside, a great spot to sit at is the bar and chat with the bar tender so you can see how much work they put into crafting their drinks. If you are lucky, you'll see their bar director as well. A great set of people work here and I hope the keep up the great work and receive all the recognition they deserve! read more

First Michelin star in San Antonio and is well deserved! The service is great, very quick and friendly, they even introduce the plate with a little explanation of it when they serve it, they were so attentive that we didn't even had the chance to ask for water. The course menu that they have , they change it periodically, everything based in different regions of Mexico, all the food was unique and very delicious, my favorite dish was the tamal with salsa of chile guajillo, that make me remember my childhood. Ok the ambiance. Clean sleek spacious. The kitchen is RIGHT next to you so you can watch them plate everything it's awesome. The plating and decor changes every few months when their menu changes. So u can keep going by back and the food won't be the same! I love that. Service was amazing. The stories everyone gets to tell. The journey through food and land and the humor from some is just so adorable. Id LOVE to bring my parents. Maybe one day who knows. Texas is a bit far from ca tho. This place earned their Michelin star just about a year ago and I do think it was well deserved. Hands up for the bar tender. That drink pairing... was incredible. Mixtli is BOMB. I came for my 30th birthday while in San Antonio for a conf, and I was not disappointed! It is their only Michelin starred restaurant in the city so I had to check it out. It is a bit pricey at $205 including taxes and fees, but I was quite full after the dinner and loved the variety and history lesson of Mexico with each dish. They also let you have a copy of the menu after which is fun, and they do that Michelin thing where when you get up to go to the bathroom they re-fold your napkin (fancy). My fave of the dishes was the snapper crudo with banana miso, it was so unique and it takes quite a lot to surprise me, but this dish was PACKED with flavor. I also just loved the dessert, it was so pretty and actually a decent size despite the fact that most of the courses are small by design (but again, you get enough that you're full). I also ordered a non alcohol drink called the Torito, it was quite sweet and I loved it! That was $14ish including tax. Parking is a little tricky, but they do mention online there are neighborhoods nearby and you can park there for free. I parked about 1.5 blocks down in one of those areas and it was fine. Overall: I loved Mixtli, I think they're doing a great job over there. I do think they've earned that Michelin star :) read more

The Michelin star is well deserved. This is an upscale dining experience with an acute focus on ingredients, taste, and service. They change their menu every few months and focus on a new story from Mexico. This month was Veracruz. At the beginning of the meal, the chef tells a story about the idea for the menu. You get a history lesson on the ingredients and how the different cultures that settled the area influenced the gastronomy of the region. I was very impressed and it really set the mood for an interesting evening. The food is an eclectic mix of ingredients and flavors that blend nicely. It's one small surprise after another and the variety and attention to detail are impressive. Each dish is unique and complimentary to the theme for the night. The food was simply delicious. Amazing!!! Top notch!!! So no doubts as to why this place has a Michelin award. The service, food, drink, ambiance is wonderful. From when we first entered until we left we had a great time. This is well worth the money and patience to experience. We came during the Mexico 1848 menu and enjoyed new food and learned history. I like how the chefs come to the table and explain the dish and the ties to Mexico's rich history. We had many small plates for the different courses and they even accepted my vegetarian needs. I was not left out of the experience at all. We had about 9 plates brought to us from starter to dessert. Each brought a totally different culinary experience. They did things with food I've never experienced and enjoyed it all. The menu changed I believe 3 times a year so if you like the offering sign up as soon as you can. I do recommend the drink pairing as that really elevated the experience as well. They do have a cool bar downstairs with plenty of cocktails to enjoy before and/or after dinner. read more

Seeing as I'm leaving San Antonio soon I wanted to try Mixtli one more time before I left. I think Mixtli does high end dining better than most other high end restaurants in San Antonio (that I've tried). The presentation is top notch, the stories are entertaining, the service was better than most other restaurants and the drinks were delicious. There were 8 courses, including 3 apps, 4 mains and a dessert. And we did a cocktail pairing which included 5 drinks. There were some misses for me food wise, but I'll chalk it up to preference. There were some dishes that used corn tortillas and the corn just overpowered the other flavors. I would say out of the 8 dishes I really enjoyed 4-5 which is slightly disappointing given the price tag but again maybe it's a preference thing. Presentation wise, each dish was a work of art. The stories behind them were also interesting, although sometimes the chefs were a little hard to hear due to ambient noise. The drinks were fantastic, I enjoyed every one of them. Although sometimes the timing was off and I had to make sure I saved some of my drink for when the right dish pairing came out. Overall I think Mixtli did a really good job. We came here after they received their star for a celebration. The interior looked super nice and definitely a cool place to dine. See pictures of interior to include bar and kitchen. You have to make a reservation ahead of time. We got their 7 course with the wine pairing. They start you off at the bar. It took a while for the first course to come out. They change their menu out every few months and they have a theme and a story to go along with their menu. Ours was conquistador themed. The food is individually cooked and the cook who makes it comes out and tells you the story. I really wanted to like this place, however, food portions were small and nothing about the food blew me away. Didn't think it was worth the price. The wine pairing complemented the food well but again, expensive. In regards to price to food assessment, you're better off spending your money elsewhere. They have validated parking but only up to a certain period of time. We ended up having to pay not out of any fault of our own but because of how long the food and drinks took to come out. read more

Absolute Perfection. First trip to Mixtli, but not our first Michelin dining experience. We went at the end of March and had the Mexico 1848 nine course menu. Starting with the overall service, we came to celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary and were greeted with complimentary glasses of champagne and a small bouquet of flowers on our table. We were sat in the smaller wine cellar room where we had a slightly more private experience, but could still see the chefs creating our plates. As the chefs began dropping off our plates, we were delighted to have a story come with each dish and how the ingredients related to the 1848 timeframe. I wouldn't call myself a picky eater, but when the dish presents you with "nixtamalized squash, seed brittle, piloncillo" I tend to say myself "I am not going to like this". But not just this dish, but everything was just seasoned, cooked, and presented with such perfection that everything went well beyond my expectations. Had my eye on Mixtli before they got their Michelin star. Finally came to celebrate a promotion and it did not disappoint! The atmosphere was inviting and intimate, perfect for a date night or an intimate gathering. Really enjoyed seeing the chefs plating each dish. The service was impeccable, servers were attentive and are very knowledgeable . Each course was delivered by the chefs with a brief history lesson where each dish was inspired telling a story thru the cuisine. I was excited to come back as soon as they were awarded a Michelin star but it turned out to be a disappointing night! You book a RSVP online and prepay the automatic 20% tip. It does not matter how big or small your party is. This is such common faux pas these days and misses the whole spirit of tipping. Our entire experience here lasted 3.5 hours. Most of it consisted of waiting for the next course, as each dish portion was meager. We opted for the cocktail pairing which we were instructed to enjoy over 2-3 courses. We waited so long for the next course that the ice melted and had to chug. We asked for an additional serving of bread but they were not able to accommodate due to their kitchen's "strict schedule." There was no explanation given for the delay. I think the delay soured our experience exponentially given the high expectations we had. Be aware that valet parking in their lot is only validated for 90 min. We were not informed of this despite asking upon arrival if parking is validated. We paid an additional $25 on top of our hefty bill. In regard to the theme of Spanish conquistadors and their massacre of the Aztecs, it seemed like the servers/chefs felt awkward or embarrassed to discuss each course. Dishes were described as being inspired by "sad," "dark," and "ironic" historical events. Perhaps this was the point Mixtli wanted to make? It didn't particularly enhance the food. A positive point is that we were provided additional mussels after mentioning to the sever that the first ones were very gritty. Overall, our experience did not live up to their 1 star accolade. I am very conflicted over my experience at Mixtli. The restaurant itself is very nice. I was seated in their wine cellar room which was more private than the main dining room. Ambience was peaceful and relaxing. I dined when they were serving the La Conquista: 1519 menu. Some dishes I really loved like the dessert courses, beef with pumpkin mole, and the tamale. Other dishes I was not wowed by but they still tasted good. While I appreciate art, I felt the portions were definitely on the small side. I have been to several fine dining establishments and this dinner has been the smallest to date. Timing in between courses was off and sometimes the wait was long. Sometimes we were behind the table next to us (even though they were seated after us) and sometimes we were ahead. Once the hostess noticed the timing was off the service became stiff and awkward. But one waiter in particular was upbeat and he had an infectious smile throughout the night. Maybe I came too soon after the Michelin announcement. Most of the staff seemed under pressure. I'm sure with time passing things will calm down. Overall it was a nice evening with nice food. Everything just felt a little awkward and I did leave hungry. read more

Incredible food, incredible service. I experienced Mixtli's Mexican Pacific menu. I loved the concept of the restaurant itself, the logo being a cloud that travels, and their menu ever changing. The menu told a story that I could taste, of different cultures meeting a mixing in the Mexican Pacific. Each course was truly unique, with distinct flavors in creative textures. I would give this 6 stars if I could. Absolutely unreal. I'm sad I don't love closer, I'd go at least every season for the new menu. Each course was memorable in its own way, and the chefs coming out and presenting the dishes was a great touch. The service was spot on, attentive but not overwhelming. I don't want to make y'all read a whole novel with how good this place is. I'm going to highlight favorite dishes. If you can splurge, I highly recommend it because it is not just a meal but a complete seasonal experience. My wife and I have been once before they got their Michelin star and wanted to try it after the fact. Any theme you get tickets for will be well worth it. The attire was formal with a little fun/relaxed; most of the staff was in chef attire and serving staff was pant suit, but with Converse or a fun sneaker. We went the full nine yards this time: meal, cocktail pairings package, and pan y cafe package. If you spring for the cocktail package, you're basically saving $ since it was 5 cocktails throughout the courses which would have been more if you bought them individually. Note, there is a non-alcoholic or wine version if you don't want cocktails but still want pairings. The courses tell a story and each chef will come up and explain the dish when they place it. No spoilers here! "El Libre" was my favorite cocktail. Have you seen that meme "Fantastic, give me 14 of 'em!"? That's exactly how good this cocktail was. Refreshing, perfect for a sunny day. My wife and I had the same favorite dish which was the wild boar raviolo. Not gamey at all, topped with a dry chile salsa slowly building in heat with each bite. The cocktail pairing? Perfectly partnered. It was the "Ponderosa Rivers," a gin cocktail. Smelled deliciously of pine and cut the heat enough before you went back for the next bite. My wife's favorite cocktail was the "Magdalena's Kitchen." She described it as "summer camp" with the smokiness and char of the olive garnish (and we normally don't like olives). The caramelized onions sounds crazy but the smokiness of the mezcal (a deterrent for some) was surprisingly balanced with this combination! I feel I can't go with out mentioning, served hot, "The Braided Treaty." It was like liquid Vaporub; opening your sinuses with each whiff/sip. I would love a couple of these when I'm feeling sick or on a cold, rainy day. The intermezzo. I don't know if this description will translate, but the apple/celery gelato(?) with the white strawberry was like if you drank the juice after eating aguachiles. And it was delicious! LOL I normally don't drink coffee but the cafe de olla that they brought out was spiced with cardamom and clove and I can't remember what else. Delicious, especially with the pan dulce. I'm usually a tea drinker and I enjoyed that coffee thoroughly. You can't go wrong with Mixtli. This is almost just a journal entry because I could go write a review for each dish and its pairing. Wow. Talk about expertly executed food/experience/service. This is fine dining at its best. The staff here is superb without being stuck up. You can have James Beard level food with charming Texas level hospitality. We stopped into the wine shop after because the reserve wine/sake pairing was so well done we needed to bring it all home. Go early to the bar and enjoy a cocktail or cocktail before dinner. Pretty please don't change the bread course / pepper miso soup in the menu refresh. It was life changing. The only criticism we had was the kanpachi pastor taco would've been better with thinner cuts of fish. It was hard to eat as a thick piece of fish. We can't wait to come back again and again. This is a Mexican restaurant that's a fixed 8 course menu (though we ended up with more then 8 courses) . The menu changes every 90 days to feature a different region of Mexico. It was cool because each dish had a piece of history of the veracruz region so the chef that made each dish brought us the dish to explain what it was and what it represented. It was very intimate probably sat 40 people max so we small and simple and the chefs cooked right in the middle of the restaurant in a small kitchen. Very intimate dining and expect to pay a pretty penny. The courses are small but all the food was good with some exceptional. This is truly a dining experience though. The menu ranged from vegetable only dishes to seafood and steak. We finished with hot chocolate and coffee service. Also expect too spend your evening there, the whole experience took us 2.5 hours and we were never rushed. I see why this place has won so many awards. The ambiance at Mixtli feels like I'm in a scripted New York show at a bar on a Friday where I'm the main character. On the tv you can see the cooks cooking away while you await your meal and the bartenders put love and care in the drinks. Having lived in San Antonio for four years now, I'm almost ashamed to admit that I've only recently visited Mixtli--even more ashamed after my experience. Mixtli is tucked away in a quiet corner of Southtown, with its own (metered) parking. Finding the restaurant was easy enough, and parking is charged at the average rate of other San Antonio lots. I was given a warm, friendly welcome when I entered and led past the open kitchen to their sunken bar area to enjoy a welcome cocktail. I started with my "tester" cocktail: a classic gin Rickey. It was made perfectly, something that may seem more common than it really is. Chef Rico Torres welcomed me to his Mexican omakase-style home with a smoked oyster and broke down the current menu as it rotates seasonally. I tried my hardest to focus on his lesson, but the earthy flavor of the corn butter and fermented charanda-tepache mixture, melded with the smoke, sent my eyes rolling to the back of my skull. I gathered myself in time to be led back into the main dining room to begin my journey to the Tierra Caliente. This menu focused on the regional cuisine from Guerrero to Michoacan on Mexico's Pacific side. Each course was presented by a different staff member, which is something I appreciate as a chef and former restaurant staff member. It allows the entire cast to interact with a diner, allowing the patrons to appreciate how many people work to provide such a delightful experience. The next course was a sopa de agúcate, which was creamy and served alongside a leg of crab. Subsequent courses were the corunda- a white corn cake with a layer of koji jocoque (essentially a Mexican fermented dairy product similar to kefir), mole rosa (roasted beets with smoked hibiscus, and pomegranate) served on a tortilla to be consumed taco-style, pasta de rancho (a tortellini-esque, lemon, and requezon-filled pasta sat atop a tomato sauce), beef tongue braised until tender and served over plantain pave (layered cake) and a dollop of peanut mole, the mole de cafe was a succulent, brined boneless pork chop served with a sweet-tart apple slaw. Halfway through the meal, I ordered the Mixtli margarita, which has to rank in my top five favorite cocktails worldwide. The salted orange foam lives in my head rent-free for life. I also added the coffee service, which included a café de olla, which was exceptionally presented and easily served two people. My intermezzo was a palate-cleansing sorbet with a mirepoix of crunchy and vibrant fruits and jicama. The final course was a caramelized milk ice cream served atop popped sorghum alongside a hazelnut pirouette. Between the engaged, attentive staff, the ambiance (the quietest open kitchen I've ever experienced), the culinary ingenuity of the chefs, and the cutlery and dishes, I can't recommend Mixtli enough. They are developing and showcasing true culinary art, which is in short supply in San Antonio. read more

If you will never in your life be able to go to another Michelin starred restaurant you should definitely go to Mixtli. On this visit, the menu was The Mexican Pacific, Baja to Chiapas. The service was very good, but a little slow. The timing was not quite right, with many lengthy pauses between courses. The stories that went along with the courses were interesting, but quite honestly, a little hard to hear. They give you the menu after you eat. I would have preferred it before the meal to have had a reference. Foodwise, they were hit and miss. The starters were great and were Michelin quality. Next came an aguachile that was refreshing but not outstanding. The next dish was a chicken terrine that was just not very good and unfortunately overshadowed the rest of the meal. Next was a very good curry inspired tamal terrine with great, Michelin presentation. A lovely and magical looking mesquite smoke encased in a coconut shaped dish. It goes away too quickly. There was an underwhelming Tuna Belly chicharon that wasn't crispy followed by a very good piece of pork with the cutest plantain chip in the shape of a pig. Good but just good carnitas. The best dish came next. The Sonoran styled Bavette. One of the best pieces of beef I have eaten. Perfectly cooked, pink throughout and tender, with a hearty yet delicate smokiness. The charred onions and chiltepin salsa were delicious as well. However, I wasn't really in the mood to make my own fajita. As good as it was, it didn't match the experience. And the tortillas were a little hard. On to dessert. There was an avacado ice cream dish that was not very tasty. A little bitter but not in a good way. This was followed by a triad of dessert treats, the best being the buttermilk sorbet. I will give them cudos for having a nice non-alcoholic sparkling wine. The first glass was complimentary. Again, if it's your only shot at eating a Michelin starred meal, it's not to be missed. But with that star there is a certain amount of expectation that was missed here. read more

When to Celebrate our 32nd Anniversary this Saturday. And the food & drinks was fantastic all 8 courses. The cocktail pairing was excellent although I'm not really a drinker so I did over do it. And was under the weather the next day, only one complaint was the flowers that was purchased I was very disappointed in the flowers that was placed on the table. But I began to like them until it was time to go and they took the flowers out of the blue vase then I became disappointed all over again with the amount they CHARGED you don't get to keep the vase.(sad). Hip hot spot in downtown! I will have to edit this review later after I had a chance to figure to digest this incredible meal. I think there's a lot to be said about the interpretation of indigenous Mexican cuisine, especially through the lens of a colonialist technique and language. Overall, this place is headed for a Michelin rating at some point very soon. More to come. read more

Excellent service and warm atmosphere. The food presentation was very artistic and tasty. My major complaint is that I left hungry. The portions are small and they offer several vegan dishes in their tasting menu which aren't very filling. Luckily, there was a good restaurant open next door which allowed us to satisfy our hunger. Also, the desserts were strange and not very good. Who uses celery as a main ingredient in a dessert? It was nasty. read more

We were downtown San Antonio and needed to waste a little bit of time before we had a pick up someone from the area so we decided to go into the spot that we had been before.
