Stopped by here on our first bike ride around Livermore wine tasting with my partner; we ended up stumbling in when someone was having a birthday party, which was pretty awesome. The service was a bit backed up due to their wifi being down but not a problem, they were extremely gracious about it and the pouring made up for it! Came wine tasting here with my husband on a Saturday. We didn't have a reservation and just walked in, that's not typically our style but it was a last minute decision and figured we would try. They were able to accommodate us, I think also in part probably because it was blazing hot this day, so perhaps they weren't as full as they usually are for a Saturday, but great for us! I think it's great that they allow you to bring your own food, though I wish we had known ahead of time, (again, last minute decision so I didn't do my research) we definitely would've brought some snacks since they do not sell food. It was a hot day, and Brent promptly brought over a carafe of water, which we appreciated. The winery is intimate, but it has a lot of character. On the west side, you can overlook the vineyards, which was lovely. Since it was a hot day, not many people were out there on that side, so we had that side of the house to ourselves. The tasting included 6 wines, a mix of whites and reds. Since I'm more partial to whites, I asked if I could swap some of the reds for more whites instead, and Brent happily accommodated me. He was kind and friendly throughout. I also love bubbles, and at first he mentioned he didn't have an open bottle, but I said I would still buy it anyways. But later he found one and poured me some of their sparkling, it was delicious! I should've bought 2!! He asked us what we wanted to re-visit and my husband picked the Fat Boy. We picked up a bottle of that one too. I will be coming back for another sparkling or two! Overall, a great experience thanks to Brent. Nostalgic Summer Afternoon Under the Trees What a spectacular way to spend a warm summer afternoon! My wife and I stopped by Mitchell Katz on a 100-degree day, but sitting outdoors under the deep shade of their trees with a gentle breeze keeping us cool was incredibly comfortable. It actually transported me right back to the magic of school summer breaks growing up in India. The wine flight itself was an absolute treat. We started with the "Sunshine" Sauvignon Blanc, which was the perfect, crisp welcome pour (honestly, it would make a stellar candidate for a sparkling wine!). While the '22 "Wet My Lips" Rosé was just okay for us, the reds and the sweet finish completely blew us away: * '22 Casa de Vinas Merlot: This completely redefined what a Merlot should be. Incredible spicy richness with a beautiful, lingering finish. * '21 "Fat Boy" Cabernet: Lush, velvety, sweet, and tangy with a gorgeous hint of spice in the aroma. It is exactly the bold, unapologetic "Fat Boy" Cabernet Mitchell envisioned. (I was in heaven, though my wife found it a bit on the sour/tangy side!) * '21 Livermore Cabernet: A crowd-pleaser that my wife highly approved of--it carried a touch more sweetness to perfectly balance out that vibrant acidity. * '22 Mt Meanao Late Harvest Zinfandel: Liquid summer. Reminded us of plum, pluot, and honey married with sweet orange marmalade, leaving a gorgeous, spicy fruit finish that just stayed with you. They had a great offer for a case of Chardonnay. Said it was because of having a lot of inventory. Got home and the wine was obviously expired brownish colored, bad odor and appearance. Went into a couple of discussions with them, even brought back and opened 2 bottles and got nothing but push back and refusal to take them back. Very disappointing experience. We walked in on a Saturday around 1:30pm. It didn't look that busy but there was a female staff doing her best to help everyone. She looked flustered. She asked if we had a reservation but said it's ok if we didn't. I did send the reservation inquiry email like a week ago but received no response. Later, the female staff said to email a day ahead when we want to drop by. They had a small tasting room and a spacious outdoor seating. But it was a hot day so the indoor seating was taken. $25 for 5 wines. She gave us our first round of wine quickly to settle us in. She helped us pour the first 3 wines first and then a male staff helped us after. We got to try 2 extra wines not on the menu. Most of their wines were fruity and smooth except for the petite Sirah. It was a balance of earth and fruit with soft tannins. Delicious bold and flavorful wines. They allow outside food. Theres only 1 restroom for women and a port a potty for men. We ended up becoming members. Visited this winery for Holidays in the Vineyards. They did not take reservations for that weekend so we just showed up in hopes to be accommodated. There wasn't much seating, only barrel tops to gather, standing. 3 stars because they were skimpy with the tastings. Not sure if that's typical here or if it was due to the event. Wine wasn't anything special that I feel like I would return. There are other wineries with better wine and better pours. Recently went here without a reservation on a Saturday afternoon. They have a small indoor tasting room with a few tables and chairs and outside have small tables with the gas fire pit. We sat outside which was nice, the server was friendly but very slow. We opted to select bottles, the red wines were priced around $42+. They were good wines (a livermore cabernet and the I love you Sangiovese.) I used to not be a Sangiovese fan but it was not too earthy and had a nice flavor. My friend was coming to pick up some wine and asked me to join him for a wine tasting. My wine tasting experiences have been in Napa and Sonoma, but I've never been wine tasting in the Livermore Valley, so I was looking forward to it. Mitchell Katz Winery was started in 1998 in memory of Mitchell's grandfather. The winery focuses on full bodies reds and a few whites. On this day, it was sunny, cool and windy, so my friend made reservations for an indoor tasting. They have tables outside next to the building and an outdoor area facing the vineyards. There are two buildings for indoor tastings. We were in the main building which had two large tables and three small tables. The tasting is $20 and consists of five wines, Estate Chardonnay, NV California Sparkling, Fat Boy Cabernet, Crackerbox Sangiovese and Rabioli Zinfandel. My favorites were the Cabernet, which had a scent of berries with taste of current, cherries and umami with light tannins and the Sparkling, which was refreshing with tastes or oranges, peaches and mandarin blossoms. The Sparkling would be perfect for the Spring and Summer and I picked up half a case. Service was friendly, but they were a little rushed as the place was busy and tables were full when we started our tasting. Glad I was able to experience my first tasting in Livermore. read more

After visiting Michell Katz for years, we finally joined their wine club. Why did I finally join now? My top five reasons: 1. I really like the wine. Their Fat Boy Cab is fantastic. Joining the club got me a 25% discount. If I'm going to drink the wine I might as well get a discount. 2. My wife likes the wine. She loves the Patch Chardonnay. A nice reasonably priced to her favorite wine (Rombauer). 3. Complimentary wine tasting for you + 3 guests on their Classic Flight or you + 1 guest to taste their Reserve Flight. 4. They have a spacious lawn area overlooking their beautiful estate vineyards which just opened on May 1. 5. Within 30 minutes to my house. Today my boyfriend too me to Mitchell Katz to celebrate his brothers finish. I was impressed from start to finish and look forward to returning! The staff is incredibly friendly and I loved how not only attentive they were, but it was evident they get to know their members based on their interactions with him. Still delicious in 2018. Had a superb visit here. From the chard and the sparking, to the last of the reds (and oh Wesley, you ARE delicious)- it was a great place to be on a cold Friday afternoon (they won't start you on pours after 4:30- even though they close at 5pm- so get there early!) We liked all the wines- I think my favorite might have the the FourPlay Zin- but I also really liked their sparkling wine (a little sweetness, delicious). The servers are great, helpful and nice. There are seating areas- which is wonderful. It' nice to be able to sit and sip inside after working all day. There's a huge gravel parking area- handicapped spots are right up front. The sparkling wine was only 16 dollars and the red wine I liked (Four Play) was 25 I think. They have super cheese in the cooler- every time I go I get the peppadew cheese. I can't find it anywhere else! It's so good. You even get free crackers with your cheese. The wine club sounds like a great deal- apparently they have 50% off Fridays, and you can get any wine for 50% off. Guess I need to join! On 8/23 my wife, our son, myself and a friend decided to stop by without a reservation. Much to our surprise they had room and we had some flights/tastings. Your Taco Guy was on site to provide an authentic Mexican lunch. Felix was gracious and after it was over, I asked him how I could procure a glass, since their Winery was established in our very own wedding anniversary year. We bought wine and after I looked in the bags, he had wrapped two glasses for us. While we are from Michigan, they are going to see more of us in the future. You have to do better MK. Dont let customers walk away. We arrived to have a nice picnic with our kids on their lawn. There was not a single car in the lot. It was just us there. As we were walking towards the grass, an employee said the grass was closed and that only the tasting room tables were available. I explained we were there to get a bottle and sit on the lawn and was told that was not an option. I asked why and was told the grass was closed and only the tasting room was open. She gave some lame excuse that they were waiting for more consistent weather. I dont need a babysitter, just sell a bottle and let us picnic. We called The winery when it opened at noon on Saturday to make a reservation. They aren't doing tastings, but you can reserve a table for $25 with minimum purchase of a bottle of wine and charcuterie box. They have two blocks for the reservations, 12-2 or 3-5, we did the second one. We got there at 2:45, but they still took care of us. We had to sign a waiver and complete temperature checks, I felt very safe. They do have a restroom that is available for guests. Large parking lot. We picked out a bottle of Chardonnay to share, it was light and very refreshing for the the very hot day. There is lots of outdoor seating and such a variety too! The charcuterie box was amazing and so worth the $20! This was the perfect afternoon and recommend to all. read more

3.5 star experience meaning pretty average overall but I chose to round up. WIfe and I dropped by on a Saturday afternoon they were not too busy took a seat on their back paito facing the vineyards it was very nice except seems we picked a windy day or maybe its windy their often so we had to move to take better cover after a while. The first few wines were OK nothing great we poured a couple out after a tasted. Only the last two we had were good. A Sangiovese and a Cab. We purchased those for $55 each and one $20 tasting fee was waived. Overall we liked the venue, the service was OK nothing special. They got busy so we couldn't revisit or try anything off the menu to see if there was something else we might want to buy so we left as soon as the tastings were over and headed to another winery . Probably wont be back anytime soon with so many great options in the area and I felt their wines were a little pricey but was fun to try a new place. read more

The flights were amazing but their service was very poor. I have one star for great wine. I had to flag down waiter for two flights. I didn't not have designated waiter and I felt ignored! I have not had this kind of experience before in the other Livermore wineries. They need to work on customer service and be attentive to their customers. They didn't not even offer giving me receipt after my transaction. I had to ask for my receipt but they said printer did not work. The waiter finally brought computer and I put my email address in. Wouldn't any customer want their receipt ? I am avid wine taster traveled to Rome, Paris,Temecula, New York, Napa, etc. Customer service is key for someone coming back for more and having a fabulous memory. read more

Mitchell Katz really shows why Livermore Wine Country rocks. No unnecessary bougieness or ridiculous price points. Just a pleasant place to drink good wine with friendly people! $10 per tasting, didn't check if they waive with purchase of a bottle or not. We got quite a few pours--I want to say around six or seven, plus the bonus pour the awesome sommelier gave us. He was one of the highlights of the experience, funny and knowledgable, he made wine feel accessible to us know-nothings. The setting won't be the most scenic on your wine tasting tour (why I took off a star), but it's pleasant. They have cornhole, places to either sit or stand, and indoor and outdoor areas. Plus they're dog-friendly! Don't be intimidated by the porta potties. We were put off by them at first then went inside and were dazzled by the most beautiful porta potties we've ever seen (you think I'm kidding but I'm not). We enjoyed all of the wines we tried. The rosé was one of my favorites. Some snacks such as cheese available for purchase from a little fridge inside, but no full kitchen or anything. Fun fact about the place: Mitchell Katz has a day job totally unrelated to wine. This is his passion so after working a full day at his other job, he takes care of winery business. Having only been to a couple of wineries in Livermore, I quite enjoy Mitchell Katz. They are on the affordable side of wineries and tend to be very inexpensive. Their wine is good and fairly priced. What I do really enjoy about Mitchell Katz is the fact that they allow dogs and are very welcoming to them. The staff is always in a pleasant mood and happy to answer any questions we may have. If I could put zero stars I would. Mitchell Katz winery is significantly deteriorating. I have been a member at this winery for about 3 years now and recently cancelled my membership. This winery use to be fairly good until I started realizing the carelessness about customers and rude mannerisms from the owner, Mitchell. He never takes the time of day to appreciate his customers and quite often, avoids them at all costs, what type of business owner does that??? Also, seems to be under new management ran by children who don't know anything about wine and tries to get you to buy crappy wine just to meet their sales. As a long time member, I've been in three times over the past several weeks hoping to have the high quality experience I've had in the past. Sadly each time it has gotten worse, even on non busy week days. From time seated until served any wine at least 20 minutes pass, unknowledgeable staff, no music, and dirty glass. I was told the winery is under new management but appears more so to be kids with no personality, social skills, work experience, wine knowledge, or business acumen. Truly unfortunate to see this winery go down the drain so quickly. I've since cancelled my membership, as have many of my friends, and hope Mitchell Katz can do better for the sake of Livermore Valley as a winery. read more

My third review for Mitchell Katz in as many locations! They have found their forever home, and just when I thought I couldn't enjoy the MKatz experience any more...they've hit it out of the park. We visited their new home on Vasco Road during the pandemic, and during a heat wave - about 105 in Livermore that day - to pick up our wine and do a little tasting. Trust me it's worth the extra effort of making the reservation for tasting and having them take our temperature when we arrive...well worth it! Their wines are still fabulous, they never disappoint, but now they have this property that is so serene and beautiful and will lend itself to so many events with even better space for enjoying their wine and special events! We were ushered to a pair of Adirondack chairs on the porch, under the eaves, with a view of the whole lawn area and the vineyard beyond; music piped through their new sound system. Mitch even stopped by to say hi and make sure we were enjoying ourselves. Despite the heat and the pandemic, the staff did everything possible to make sure everyone was attended to, bringing the tastings out to each table, taking the time to talk about the wine being poured, etc. What a fantastic group of people. Note: There are a couple ok wines here, but would recommend other places first. First of all, no restroom. I'm sorry, but I just don't want to use a port-a-potty while wine tasting. Please, it cannot be that much money to build a bathroom. Are the employees using this too? That's also really gross and problematic. They have a nice front lawn with some tables and a tiny grass patch for Cornhole game. I think that you could bring your own picnic and buy a bottle. The problem is that the grass area is right in front of the parking lot which is all gravel and dirt. As we walked up we were smacked in the face with a dust breeze coming from parking lot. So, I'm not sure how pleasant a picnic would be with that and a port-a-potty 10 feet away. The tasting room is sort of split, there is a couch area on one side which was full, so we had a small table to sit at. You could also of course stand at the bar top. The people were nice and friendly as well, but they seemed to just pour the wine then walk away so you didn't get much detail. We asked if there was any water, a lot of tasting rooms have a little 5 gallon water container or even a little filter machine, but here, sorry you have to buy a bottle of water. Not a huge deal, but again kind of takes away from a just fun pleasant experience as you dig through your pockets or purse to find $1, like who carries cash anymore for that?! I wanted to like it, they even had a couple decent wines, but I'd definitely go elsewhere first as there are many amazing places to taste with great settings. read more
