Dry rub and smoked to perfection without being overly smoky. I didn't even bother with any of the four varieties of BBQ sauce on the table. Well, first of all if you do come here , stick to bbq. I've been here several times over the years and had previously enjoyed their ribs. The restaurant has a hillbilly vibe and specializes in what can best be described as Ozark-style Bbq. Like many places in Missouri and Arkansas, bbq and catfish are often featured in the same restaurant and both are often delicious . Not here, I made the mistake of ordering the Friday catfish special and it was one of the sorriest catfish dinners I've ever had. The fish was rubbery and very salty and appeared to be a foreign import. Terrible! A 4-hour roundtrip to have lunch with an Army buddy I haven't seen in six years would have been worth it for Arby's (sorry Arby's just needed a common denominator). When you get in there, order and the food is good- bonus. I suspect that most of the dishes here are good. The place filled up quick and folks kept coming during the 90-minutes or so that we were there. Peter and I both got the Brisket sandwich, I was happy with everything, the brisket was exceptional, they have multiple sauces on the table, tried them all- solid. The fries weren't special but were hot and salty. The coleslaw is pretty basic, but I suspect that is intentional to give you a flavor reset. The service was quick, and effective. Our server came by just enough to make sure we had everything we wanted. She also realized at a certain point that we were going to sit there and catch-up and she left us alone. The one oddity (and maybe she did tell me and I missed it), was that we had to bring the check up ourselves to the register. No doubt I would be back if I didn't live 3 states away. Heck, I may be back anyway! Ordered a large bowl of mashed taters with brisket and about 3 types of cheese and green onion and I don't know what else. It was *phenomenal*. The place itself had such a wonderful, rustic feel to it. Wood furniture and finishing, antique signs and artwork, and just had a real strong down-home sort of fee that you like in that sort of place. This is a quaint place on Route 66. We arrived around 3:30pm. Very eclectic decor on the inside. Plenty of seating. The server we had was nice, friendly, and helpful. We unfortunately were in the pocket that they were out of the things I like to try in a BBQ restaurant I haven't been too. But I got a pulled pork brisket sampler. The meat was dry without the BBQ sauce which was disappointing. It should be juicy. The sausage sampler was great that my BF had. It's a cute little bbq joint where the theme matches the name of the place. I had the sampler platter and it was amazing. The meats were all tender and the baked beans were some of the best I've had. The other day my family had ordered Missouri hick for catering. There were two large loaves of bread we got and my sister has a severe sesame seed allergy. I called them to ask and make sure they didn't use sesame flour in their bread--seems uncommon but you'd be surprised. The girl on the phone told me the kitchen had no idea what could be in the bread since they get it from somewhere else. Was there not a label on the shipping box of what the ingredients could be? Every food item does have a label because it's a mandate. We saw the signs on the highway and decided to try Missouri-style BBQ on the famous Route 66. There were several cars in the parking lot which we took as a good sign, and it was. The ambiance is great, it is perfect for a casual group, family or couple. The decor is cozy country cabin with a lot to look at, from vintage gas pumps to an old bees nest. The hostess told us we could sit where we liked and we made our way to a back room where there was a fire blazing in the beautiful stone fireplace (which was great on a cold winter's day). Our server greeted us cheerfully and gave us ample time to look over the menu. When she came back to check on us, she was quick to make recommendations such as their creamy mac and cheese topped with bacon, the slow cooked baked beans, and the best German potato salad that I have ever had! We asked how big the portions were and she said it depended on how hungry we were and that she had seen people share. Unsure, we ordered two, two-meat plates with two sides each. She returned just a few minutes later with two large, sectioned dinner plates, overflowing with food! The Cherry-wood-smoked dry-rubbed ribs were amazing, the pulled brisket was very flavorful and the pulled pork had a beautiful smokiness as well. All of the meats, and the sides she had suggested, were very generously portioned and we definitely over-ate. For two adults I would definitely recommend sharing a plate. That means it has a very mild smoke flavor. No where near as strong as hickory or oak, which is my preference. I had a sampler platter with brisket, ribs, and jalepeno cheddar sausage. My wife had a pulled pork sandwich. I've smoked brisket and ribs in the last week, and I humbly submit mine were 5x better. Y'all need to bookmark and stop here when passing through! A tad bit off the main highway, but well worth the diversion! If you are local, you likely have already been here a time or three. You can't help but see this place! Just look for the huge hog on the roof! As we pulled into the parking lot and parkied in front of the water wheel of the mill pond, there was a bull frog that had to be massive! It was louder than my subwoofer! I'll be honest, I did keep my distance from that pond as it sounded like a monster. The inside décor is what you would want in a BBQ Joint. Lots of wood paneling, lots of cool items hanging on the walls/ceilings and lots of wonderful smells of BBQ in the air! Dennis Meiser, a master BBQer and woodworker, is the creator. He made the tables and chairs plus the cedar stairs leading up to the balcony. All of their meats are seasoned with a special rub and then smoked overnight in cherry for 12 hours. We were shown to a table with all kinds BBQ sauces. As I looked around, I saw our fellow patrons eating and enjoying many items from the menu. I ordered brisket and pork ribs with a side salad and German potato salad. In no time, it was in front of me. The flavor and aroma was very nice. (Cherry smoke can be a little strong/different to some. I like it mixed with pecan and white oak, but that is my weird tastes.) The salad was quite good and not just lettuce. The German potato salad was pretty good as well, with a great tart flavor! The price was reasonable and the service was quite good! Atmosphere and service were really great. It's a big space decorated with old gas pumps and signs, cow hides and a huge wood burning fireplace. The wait staff was kind and attentive. Unfortunately the bbq was mediocre. The pulled pork and brisket were dry, The ribs were good. The mustard potato salad and cole slaw were good, the German potato salad and pickled cucumbers and onions were mediocre. Something to note is that the only alcoholic beverage they serve is beer. We liked the smoke sauce the best but they offer 6 or more other sauces to choose from. They offer vinegar based and mayo based slaw. Tried the mayo based slaw, just above average. Fun little spot on Route 66 that has connections to I-44 at both ends about 3-4 miles apart. It's a bit off the interstate but it won't take you out of the way at all. Every meat is smoked and the sides were great. The kids loved their options as well. The decor inside and out is everything you'd hope for in a roadside restaurant on Route 66.
