I have tried much local BBQ and Mission always delivers. The smoked turkey and brisket (moist or lean) are very good, with a nice smoky taste. They have 6-7 different sauces on the table, although my favorite is Alabama White. Their sides are also really good, favorites are green beans, baked beans and coleslaw. The cornbread is too dry and crumbly for me thought. They have a lot of rotating specials as well, including desserts. The place honors first responders and military members with their decor. If you want some BBQ without overpowering rubs and such, you'll like this place. read more

Today was my bday and we decided to try Missions smoked ribeye backplate special. This is slow-smoked and reverse-seared with an espresso rub that creates a melt in your mouth tender delicacy. Sauces are available, but we dared not alter the already intense smokey flavor. It came with 2 pieces of fresh corn bread. Ultimately, it help.create the best birthday ever and a meal to remember. Food is impressive. Everything but the obvious ( buns, pickles, etc.) are made in the store, including the sauces. No microwaves. Fries are better than anywhere. Pulled pork is great. Servings are generous. I haven't ventured beyond the pork sandwich because I like it so much! The staff is impressive-er. Really welcoming, interested, friendly and seemingly really genuine. I think they feel pretty good about focusing on service people and the mission of the company. Check out the mission in line if you haven't already. I discovered Mission Barbecue while visiting Nashville 5 yrs ago & visited again last year. We loved it so much we ate there 3 times during our stay. I dined at this location during the summer while visiting Peddler's Village and again we enjoyed the food. We also ate at the Carlisle location, but unfortunately yesterday was a totally different experience. I orded the Baby Back ribs, fries & coleslaw. The coleslaw was edible but the ribs & fries were so salty I could barely eat them & the corn bread was dry & flavorless. That was pre pandemic and we've all noticed significant changes in the food industry since then but the meal I got at this location was just mediocre and not worth the price I paid for it. I don't mind the higher price we're paying be it dine in or take out but the quality must be there. I love brisket and look forward to that meat to fat ratio that makes it so mouthwateringly tender. This brisket had none of that. It was so lean and so dry and so wrong. It broke apart in brittle clumps like a cookie. I also had the chicken. It was kind of wet like it had been sitting in liquid. What's not to like about Mission BBQ? Patriotic theming, friendly staff, delicious BBQ at good prices. This place has it all. They currently have a Black Plate Special which is a Ribeye Steak for like $11.50. What?!? It was absolutely delicious. They also have great pulled chicken and pork, brisket and their jalapeño sausage is fantastic! Great sides too, delicious baked beans that have brisket in it, Mac n cheese that is super cheesy and their corn bread is warm and soft! We stopped in to grab a quick bite. As you walk in the door, they make it a point to yell out a warm welcome. The ribs were delicious. Very meaty and tasty. We were there at the end of the day so they were a bit drier than we like. The brisket was very good, very tender, a little on the dry side, but I did order the lean cut. It was perfect with the sauce on it. The sides are large and plentiful. The baked beans were wonderful. A little Texas Twang sauce put them over the top. The Mac n cheese was delicious and creamy. Almost everyone appreciates the cause of Mission BBQ, support of our military and first responders. They are honored daily and even given premium parking right at the front door. But, what about the quality of the meats and sides offered in the kitchen? From my point of view the ribs, brisket, sausage, chicken and the savory sides, are all good to very good, but as with most outlets in the northeast, not nearly as excellent as available in the American South and Southwest. We seem to lack the cultural history that creates the awesome smoked meats and heavily flavorful sauces found in every back road smokehouse from Virginia to Florida and Georgia to Texas. Still, Mission is not a bad substitute when time for a road trip is lacking. I enjoyed the Baby Backs I sucked off the bone last weekend. The meat was tender, even if lacking crusty bark, smoke rings and thick, luscious sauces that are the true sign of authenticity. The Texas Twang and Tupelo Honey Heat were too thin to hold fast to the ribs, but remained at the bottom of the tray available for repeated dipping. My side choices of BBQ Beans and Cole Slaw were alright and completed the meal nicely. The corn bread was a small thin square, and somewhat dry, but sweet enough to remind me of what the real thing tasted like. So, until I have time to visit my sister in Newport News, my former bro-lo in Charlotte or friends in Austin, Mission will have to do. Everything was cold even though place was a ghost town, corn bread was hard and dry, brisket was dry and even dryer... pulled pork was great but cold, green beans were the best part of the meal they were great, coleslaw was dry and tasteless which is a first for coleslaw for me, dry and tasteless ugh. I love BBQ and this is some of the best. Full rack of ribs falling off the bone, corn bread, great macaroni and cheese and cole slaw (I like mine a little sweeter). Very friendly people. Manager was outgoing and friendly. Gave me a free dessert. Very good. This is located where the old VA hospital was. I have gone here so many times and I am just now writing a review. However because I've gone so many times, my review is much more favorable than it would have been after the first time. I will continue to visit Mission because I believe they're a great company. They also have really good bbq. I like that all the Meat is cooked without sauce so for those people that don't like sauce, they can eat here. I had the brisket first because someone recommended it to me and no... it's not for me. I'll take the poor which is super tender and juicy and always good! My favorite sides are definitely Mac and cheese, cheesy potatoes and green beans. They also have excellent corn bread which is good because some places have junk corn bread. I also like they make fresh tea and lemonade , as a non soda drinker. Their rewards program is awesome - get a free sandwich on your birthday! Their staff is always so nice ! And ... since I've gone twice during the corona pandemic (one of which was Father's Day - holy cow) the staff is KILLING IT ! I felt it was the most professional of everywhere I have gone for takeout, the best value and just exceeded expectations. Father's Day was insane, I guess everyone had the same idea, but despite how crazy it was my order didn't take that long and was completely accurate (except they did run of potato salad, which I have yet to try) and my whole family was pleased. Came here for the first time. Wasn't expecting it to be a self serve place. Great concept. They offer samples as you wait to order. Plenty of options to choose from, ribs to sandwiches. I had the baby back ribs and they were delicious. After you get your food you grab a table. 6 different sauces in bottles on the table. While we were eating, a server came around with other samples of the other items on the menu. If you ask to try something, they will bring it to you. Concept is great. I left this place with a tear in my eye but in a good way. I stopped in for lunch and arrived a little before noon. I had never been here before and was a little confused my the menu at first. The nice gentleman at the counter walked me through and informed me what my gluten free options were. I ordered the pulled chicken with a side of green beans. Your name is called and you take a seat. Upon sitting down I took note that the walls of the restaurant were covered in various military memorabilia. There were pictures of soldiers, flags, combat patches etc. I got the theme here that the "mission" here was to support our troops, a mission that certainly is near and to my heart as all the men in my family served in the army. I grabbed a table and before I could sit down, the clock struck noon and an announcement came on that stated "Please rise for the singing of the National Anthem." I was perplexed at first and looked around and low and behold every single person stood up, all employees, including cooks, stopped working and every faced the flag, hand on their hearts and listed to the National Anthem play. No taking a knee nonsense here. Aside from a sporting event, I've never been somewhere where they've done this. Back to the food, I probably shouldn't have gotten chicken, chicken is chicken! But it was juicy and there were 6 different BBQ sauces on the table to choose from (2 were not gluten free). The green beans were actually very good, I loved the flavor they had.
