Going into the project, we knew that we wanted to hire a design/build firm to avoid the back and forth we know can come from hiring separate designers and builders. When we found SF Design Build, we knew that we had made the right choice. Rudy and Jessica are such a great team - seamless communication, no-drama, very accessible, professional, and wonderful design and craftsmanship. As a designer, Jessica came up with very creative solutions to maximize our space, and is a total design pro - she anticipated design challenges before they arose. From start to finish, Shai was incredibly thorough, honest, and communicative. What really stood out was his ability to strike the right balance between function, aesthetics, and budget. He never pushed unnecessary upgrades, but instead laid out options clearly, explaining the pros and cons of each so we could make informed decisions. His eye for design and attention to detail helped us create a space that feels both beautiful and highly functional. Throughout the process, Shai was candid and reliable--qualities that can be hard to find in the construction world. We always felt he had our best interests in mind, and he treated the project as if he were working on his own home. They…read moreimpressed, whether it was with the handling of inspections and inspectors, the transparency with financials, or the simply trade itself, John Shaw and his team were always on top of our renovation. Professional, respectful, and highly communicative, he was always there whenever we needed him, by text, phone, or in person, if we needed reassurance, advice or progress reports he always seemed to be right on the ball. It's hard to communicate just how important this is to keep the blood pressure down while undertaking something as life altering as a major home renovation, but we always felt Fahan had it under control. Our project was completed on schedule, 7 months to do a new kitchen, master bath, staircase installation, family room and deck, plus electrical and lots of small detail work around the house. Seven months is really something considering how easily big renovations like ours can go off the rails. Horror stories abound, and we, quite literally, had none. What a huge relief. In terms of costs, Fahan was transparent and upfront with us. They estimated and invoiced all expected and unexpected costs up front, and clearly stated any potential overruns. There were some, but none that we felt were from left field, and for each one we were given options to keep in line with what we were comfortable with. We understood and signed off on everything before anything moved forward, with a comforting degree of transparency. The only downside we could see was that the pricing tended to be high. It's not entirely clear however if this was due to the current economic conditions of '22-'23 or if it's just what quality work and workmanship costs. But as they say, you get what you pay for. Overall, we felt well-taken care of throughout the process, like there was an insider who knew the business, the pitfalls and the tricks. "I trust them", were words we uttered more than once. Most of the time we weren't even at the house, only catching up on the progress on weekends, but we always knew that the work would get done and with little to no issues along the way. THe house turned out amazing. We really couldn't be happier with the work they did. Fahan's just a quality outfit, contractors and subs, that you should trust with your house too. Just top-shelf all the way. Two thumbs up.

We hired Fahan for a number of projects at our home in the Outer Sunset of San Francisco: building a new deck, extending power and plumbing to the back yard, replacing our leaky roof, providing access to the new deck from our bedroom and a number of other misc projects inside our home. All of these projects were completed on time and with superb quality. John was incredibly friendly, professional and responsive throughout the whole process. He was extremely thorough: from working with the architect to co-ordinating with all the inspectors, to introducing us to all the members on his team and what we could expect from them on a regular basis. He managed the whole project effectively by providing us with timely quotes, invoices and being diligent about addressing any follow up questions we had. If there were any unforeseen issues with the weather or supply chain issues, John kept us informed and worked around each of these issues while keeping the project on time. Every single day, his team would show up on time and work diligently while keeping us posted if they needed anything. When we wanted something updated or changed, they obliged us immediately. What was particularly impressive is that they pulled off a number of different projects working across 3-4 different groups of people! I will definitely miss them around our home. And will reach out to them we need anything built or fixed moving forward.

We took the entire house down to the studs and then moved and replaced all the studs. To say we were terrified is a complete understatement. We talked to several GC's, and were referred to Aaron Gordon by our architect. He stood out from the start, and there was really no question who we'd go with after meeting with him and running through his process. He broke down and explained every aspect of the project, and priced out the entire thing in advance. And this wasn't a rough ballpark quote like you get from most GCs, it was down to every detail. We were always in the loop on every aspect of the project. We had bi-weekly onsite check ins, and they provided weekly summaries of work completed and what was on the schedule for the coming week. We were never in the dark. Most importantly, I am happy to say now that the project is over, there were no surprises, and they finished on time and on budget (slightly below actually). That's quite an accomplishment considering the scope of work involved. Their quality is top notch, and the entire team is 100% professional. Not to mention they are just genuinely really good people. They would repeatedly go above and beyond what's expected. Just as one example (to which there are many), right when we moved in we tried to start garbage service through Recology and have bins sent to our house. Unfortunately Recology was hacked and their systems were down for weeks. We had nowhere to put our garbage, so the AGC team swung by several weeks in a row to literally pick up our personal garbage, just as a courtesy until we finally got bins sent to us. I could rattle off countless examples, but I just wanted to highlight the level of service they provide. I was flat out impressed at how they conducted themselves both professionally and personally. This whole thing could have been so stressful, but the team ensured it never got to that point. I dare say it was even enjoyable. It was amazing to watch our home transform knowing it was in good hands. I have zero hesitation recommending them to anyone starting a new project. They are as good as it gets, and they will be our go to for all our future needs. So happy we were referred to AGC.

It was an unfortunate discovery, but working with Aaron, Joro, Denis, and team made the whole process significantly less painful. We also elected to do some minor remodeling to the affected areas, and directly provided AGC with the design. They were extremely accommodating in this, and Joro, our project manager, provided a wealth of feedback and suggestions that we incorporated. We hired them largely based on their portfolio, and even got to tour one of their previous SF projects that was being prepped for sale. They definitely specialize in higher-end construction, but in the end we felt that both the structural and cosmetic work needed the attention to detail we felt AGC could provide. Excellent communication, COVID-safe, and they were able to rapidly source quality sub-contractors for plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and cabinetry despite being in the middle of a pandemic with very high demand. I whole-heartedly recommend AGC and will be referring friends to them.

The bigger their project, the worse their experience. Amirite? I'm here to tell you, we are the unicorn that actually loved our contractor. We did a major remodel, addition and ADU project with Hubert / Plus One Construction. Which turned out more complicated than a clean tear-down and re-build. I shudder to imagine how it would have gone without Plus One. Hubert was a true partner. Someone we could trust had our best interests through all the surprises that inevitably pops up on a large project. We decided to go into this project without a designer. As it turned out, we were a bit in over our heads. But Hubert takes the time to outline all the options, pros and cons. Way more specific, practical and actionable compared to the dozens of reddit comments you might rabbit hole into when you're posing as a designer. Plus One is not the cheapest per se. We would know because we vetted and received proposals from over 10 contractors. And while I'm usually unreasonably cheap, we just got the right vibes from Hubert. And the vibes were correct. He doesn't ridiculously mark up the work that goes beyond scope. I am a sticker for not getting ripped off, it's almost a psychological hangup. And I never felt Hubert was pulling a fast one. In fact, he goes out his way to go the extra mile, even on things that should have been our responsibility. Even after the "end" of our scope of work, he had his guys come back several times to make sure everything was right. This alone might make him the best value in the long run, even if his starting proposal is not the cheapest. Hubert is pro-active i resolcing issues that might arise with an over-zealous city planning department. According to our neighbors, we live in such a city; but I wouldn't know, mostly thanks to Hubert. He knew our city's codes and how to work with them. In fact, he was offered a job by our city's planning department, they liked him so much. I suspect we got a friendly ref's whistle, so to speak, because our city planners just straight up liked Hubert. I write this after just completing a year+ long project with Hubert and his guys. And I'm not going to lie, we're a bit sad that they will not be in our lives anymore. Ask yourself, have you ever heard anyone say that about their contractor? We were lucky... but you can be too! Hire them and thank me later! (By the way, he did not ask me to write this. I felt compelled. The least I can do to return to return the favor. He did not build it; he made it happen.)
