Hue Style Beef Noodle Soup (Bun bo Hue)
Eric L.

My Vietnamese friends recommended this place for their Bun Bo Hue and they weren't wrong. I've had my fair share of Bun Bo Hue while traveling around Hue, Vietnam and I must say that this is definitely one of the best out there. The best part of the dish was undoubtedly the broth. The broth is very rich and deep in flavor. Although it has an intense color, it wasn't too spicy. Highly recommend!

We stopped by here to try, thinking all the pho places should be pretty good at Argyle. It's definitely have a nice atmosphere and pretty modern and spacious. They use really nice water cups. The food wasn't bad but not super spectacular. They use the thick wide rice noodles for pho, the soup base is not bad tho. We tried their sampler platter and thought nothing really stood out, the shrimp roll which I judge a place on is pretty plain, no special veggies like mint or basil inside. The peanut sauce and the sweet sauce were okay too, not bad but also not spectacular. I was interested in their southern style chicken based pho with egg noodles. I thought it was not bad but my husband didn't like it. It kinda tastes like instant ramen broth, but better, if you know what I mean. It had seafood but all were a little too tough/overcooked. The bao was fine too, pretty small and the meat were a little tough. We weren't super impressed but it is still better than the really bad pho places, at least the pho broth tastes like pho. The only issue we had was that the staff appeared to be sick but they didn't wear a mask or anything. Hope we didn't catch anything from the restaurant!! Overall I think the quality and the quantity were a little less than we expected for the price they charge.

I came here on a Saturday night. My friend and I travelled all the way to Argyle for some pho. We wanted to try a place we haven't tried before. Miss Saigon caught our attention with their interior and the amount of people eating inside. It wasn't packed but we secured a nice little table by the front of the restaurant. The waiter came to us after maybe 3-5 minutes. I ordered the pho with everything and my friend ordered the pho with meatball. We also ordered the banh mi with fries. I would say that the fries were so good. It was crispy and flavorful. The banh mi was nothing special, just what you expect. The phos however were really oily. It was oily because they added short ribs to the soup. The pho noodles were also not as thin as we expected. It was more of a flat noodle.

The Uptown neighborhood in Chicago is full of delicious pho options and this was one I only recently discovered on recommendation of a friend. Miss Saigon has all the makings of the traditional pho joint you get in the neighborhood with all the modernness of a new restaurant. Cool vibes and great food make for a great experience! Super open concept so you don't feel crammed in at all. Service is great and you get your food quick .

Wanted to try a new Pho place from the usual spot I go to on Argyle. Food was ok at best for the money you are spending. Broth of flavorful and the meat serving was generous. I did not know/expect the noodles were the wide noodles and not thin ones. Service was not great. The only time I saw a waiter coming to our table was taking our orders and filling the water cups once, other than dropping off food. Meal was finished and trying to get them to come over so I can pay for the meal. Watched them socialize with each other, check other tables out, and made multiple eye contacts with them and nothing. I finally decided to get up to go up and pay, that's when I was told they will meet me at the table. Overall experience was not great or even good. Will definitely be eating around at other places.

I got the short rib noodle salad, papaya salad, and my friend ordered the shrimp noodle salad. I wish they had the grilled pork noodle salad. Their menu is relatively small but portions were all large. I enjoyed the papaya salad a lot. I would not get the short rib again as it was not much meat.

My family from California came to visit and were craving solid Vietnamese food by the tail end of their trip. We ordered it bbq pork baos, pho Saigon and bun bo hue. The pho and BBH broth is slightly on the sweeter side but still so good, broth is very developed and clean. My family are pretty tough critics on Vietnamese food and they were happy with the meal, comparable to back home. I like how they offer pickled garlic/chilies on the side, you don't get that often. Might be the top BBH and pho place I've found in Chicago so far, especially in Argyle. Clean restaurant and friendly service. When I'm craving pho or BBH, this would be my go to.

Love everything about Miss Saigon Every time I'm in Chicago, I have to swing by for lunch and comfort food. Their signatures are Pho and Crispy Chicken, but I still haven't tried the Pho because I'm hooked on that crispy chicken. It's SO good! You can get it with fried rice or noodles, and both are solid choices. The chicken is super flavorful, crispy on the outside, and juicy on the inside. The taste is so authentic it really reminds me of home. Their Bun Bo Hue is also incredible and really comforting. The staff here is 10/10. They were super thoughtful and welcoming, and they made me feel extra special when I mentioned I was visiting from out of town. The restaurant is in the heart of Vietnam Town. It's pretty small, but cozy and clean. Exactly what I look for in a comfort food spot

Quick service and very clean. The roll sampler was excellent alongside the saigon pho. Will come back!

I would say this has amazing Bun Bo Hue, and I know when it's good. The flavors and color was there, so much fresh herbs that came out. The Pho Saigon was also filled with flavor, just wish it came out a little hotter. The service was great and I loved the ambiance inside. It was Vietnamese music playing and sometimes I rarely hear it in restaurants. We also had the Rolls Sampler which came with two egg rolls and spring rolls which were also fresh. Loves this place and wished I found it earlier.

I was feeling a little under the weather so I thought getting some pho would be a good idea. I was right. The staff seated us right away, the ambiance was cute. I ordered the short rib pho and a cup of hot tea it hit the spot and was quite delicious.

Crispy chicken wings with caramelized fish sauce sounded adventurous but tasted familiar. Wagyu with lemongrass and a chili sea salt was simple but tasty. The grilled eggplant was yummy, paired with pickled shallots, fried garlic, and scallions. Definitely a good one for eggplant lovers like me. The veggie curry was good but probably the least favored of everything we had and couldn't finish it. But we made room for a little dessert! We went with the whipped rice pudding but had it without peanuts because I'm allergic. We didn't really enjoy it much. It was kind of bland and I'm guessing it might be because we omitted the nuts. It was sad to finish on a weak note.

Seeing as we once lived together on a Clark Street, why not dinner on this N Clark St? Following my clinical parallel park job, we entered this theatre of dreams. I'll recognize upfront my bias for sloped ceilings, but this spot ticks that interior box. Sierra Mist colored lighting to make the drinks hit harder and fake skylights that unironically went crazy. Not to mention, this Croatian meets Vietnamese love story was jamming Americana all night long. Soon enough I was white-knuckling the table to keep my cool as the medley proved to be somewhere between erotic and nostalgic. One could rescue a newborn from a burning building and it would pail in comparison to the respect our waitress lavished onto us. Reason being, this lovely lady spent the entire night responding with "yes chef" to any of our interactions. In all fairness, it's understandable to assume our party of mustached men were chefs. Heck, one of us got a diet cola, isn't that a tell too? I say all this to make known the cult status that woman will have in my heart till I breathe my last breath. As for the menu, what a divine collaboration. Sequestered into some back pages lay a section for Balkan fare that served as a platform for the married-in man to showcase his swagger. Truth be told it's this food selection that brought me in and that red pepper spread that makes me stay. This skilled in-law got even more time to shine on the beer list, with my dark Bosnian beer showing every reason why. Tasty lil thing. All things considered, this is still a Vietnamese restaurant. Pho did its thing and embraced the mega serving size stereotype it so firmly holds, but it cannot sit in the poll position here. Brian, my dear friend, voiced that his girlfriend swears by Sunset's crispy noodle. Well folks, Tessa certainly knows ball! While still respectfully conversing through our meal, Brian joined the clean plate club alarmingly fast. Based on my swapski sampling of his platter I can understand why. Clear betting favorite, certified hustler, it's what to get y'all. As we wrapped our meal my other dear friend at the table, John, accidentally stated something that must serve as the slogan for Sunset Pho Caffe. He said, "It elevates the past." By golly it does and I'll raise my glass to that!

It's a decent size hall with 10+ table arrangements, making it pretty great for a group to enjoy their lunch. It also featured a couple of kiosks for ordering, which I thought was a bit easy to miss, since it was tucked away in the left corner when you walked in. It looked like there was also a cashier available to take orders, if you miss the kiosks. I've seen places where they simply do not have anyone at the register to take orders, but that wasn't the case for Lotus. Before deciding to visit them today, I had an impression that their menu choices were very limited compared to other Vietnamese restaurants I was used to. I'm certainly not complaining, since I'm usually a huge fan of select "specialty" approach in restaurants. That's why I decided to order one of their Bahn mi, where I normally would have chosen pho for my first visit. And it didn't disappoint. First off, the size of the sandwich was good. I've had it where they charged a buck or two less, but they weren't big enough to be a full "lunch" portion. Lotus' size, I thought was decent. I had ordered one of their cha gios just in case the sandwich failed to fill me, but I think I would have been okay without it. Cha gio was super good tho! Oh, and the iced V-coffee was good, too. Typically, they'll bring out the coffee before your meal is ready, probably because they're ready-made in the morning and all you'd need to do is pour them over ice. I of course, have known legitimate mom n' pop places, where they'll actually bring out coffee as it's brewing in Phin (stainless steel coffee filter) and a glass of ice with condensed milk, so you can wait for the coffee to finish brewing and pour yourself one, which is what I *always* prefer. Not here, but no big deal. You can usually tell how good the food is going to be by trying their iced coffee. Even though V-coffee isn't known for using "incredible" beans, the balance of the strength of coffee and condensed milk *does* make a big difference in your experience. I felt this place had it correct! I'll definitely come back myself and even bring coworkers or my family to have their Bahn mi again. What I'm not sure about is whether I want to try their pho or bun. First, they don't offer too many variations, so I'm stuck choosing from just a few. (For example, I usually go for "brisket-only" or a combo of brisket and rare steak, but they didn't seem to have those options. Granted, it's possible they'll make it happen if I asked) Secondly, I think they're a couple bucks more expensive than what I would like to pay for a bowl of pho. We'll see.

I didn't try the hot pot, but the group one table over had it. Speaking of the other group, so many varied entrees came out of the kitchen - it was cool to see more than just phở. The waitstaff is quick... almost to the point of impatient! But never problematic. Be aware that dishes fly out of the kitchen as they are ready. One bowl might come out way before the others.
