She has to work for the day so I figured I would get a hair cut and passed by this spot. If not for their sidewalk sign out front, it's an easy miss. I came on a Thursday morning so it wasn't very busy and I got serviced as soon as I arrived. You can call ahead (which is what I did) and make an appointment too if that's your style. The decor inside is very welcoming and relaxing. Up front they have magazines and cute novelty books to read if you do need to wait. Staff starts by asking about your hair and what you need/want before proceeding. A hair cut comes with a shampoo and blow dry. Prices were pretty reasonable. Since my hair is simple, it was only $33 for the shampoo and cut. Overall a pleasant and personable experience, I would definitely go again!

Finally found myself happily cemented here for the past year. Bri was the only person who could cut my sides to perfection with scissors, as opposed to clippers -- which to me is an absolute key for male style. My hair has never looked better (I get complimented non-stop) and she's an even better person to boot. An amazing listener when it comes what I desire in my cut -- she never misses a single detail. After reviewing some options online and making a few phone calls, I quickly settled on Salon La Mae. The reason? I was so impressed with the brief yet thorough consultation I had with the lovely young woman who answered the phone. She asked what I was looking to achieve and quickly recommended the salon owner for my first visit. She even went so far as to give me the owner's private number so I could forward her pics of what my current style looked like and what style I was aiming for. I was told this would better prepare for my initial visit. Nice, right? And I must say, my initial visit was quite good. It was right after COVID re-opening, so many safety protocols were in place. I especially liked how they provided me with a disposable mask so that bleach wouldn't ruin mine. Jamie was very thorough with my consultation and processed my color beautifully. She struggled a bit with my balayage, and I left with more of a highlighted look rather than an ombre appearance, but it was still quite nice. She also struggled some with the flat iron beach wave I requested as far as styling. But not a big deal whatsoever. My biggest complaint was the noise. It's a chatty place and very loud. I like to relax during my salon visits and it's next to impossible to do at this location. The conversation and language could use a slight 'cleaning up' as well. So, onto the following visits. This is where the pleasant waters started to murky some. I called to schedule a root touch-up and was promptly provided an appointment on a Saturday, which I requested due to my work schedule. The night prior to my appointment, I received a text from Jamie stating that she double booked the following day and needed to reschedule my appointment. The soonest she had open was an evening, the following Tuesday at 6:00. Although it was just a few days away and I try to remain flexible, this was frustrating. After a 9-hour workday, I would have to get approval to leave work 15 minutes early and sit at the salon after being away from home all day. So overall, my second appointment was surrounded in unfortunate circumstances and felt rushed once started. Now to my third and final 'attempt' at making an appointment. I called the salon several times one evening to schedule and could not get through. The only option I had was to leave a voicemail for my stylist who would call me back to schedule an appointment. That call never came. I gave it a few days and decided that I should probably admit defeat and move on to another salon. I did and I'm content. Salon La Mae is a laid-back place and just fine for a quick hairstyle needed by a client with a fairly open schedule. Just not for me.

I asked for a few of the other stylists and the receptionist informed me that none of them were taking new clients. The only option she gave me was a stylist who always seems to have a really bad attitude. She always had a lot of open appointments, which I take as a bad sign, and she had done a poor job on my haircut once in the past. I asked for a Saturday appointment because I work in Pittsburgh and get home late in the evenings. The receptionist continued to insist I come in after work during the week and ended up giving me one of the last appointments of the night. I figured I would give the stylist another chance. Unsurprisingly, the stylist was in a really bad mood, acted very impolitely, and did a terrible job with my hair. It's a shame because I really enjoyed going here and there are several amazing stylists at the salon, they just do not take any new clients.
