Giant Chicken Egg Roll for the Win! Whenever I go to Redondo Beach Pier; I try to make it a point to visit Mini Chinese Food for their egg rolls. They offer some gigantic chicken egg rolls for $4. Some may think $4 for one egg roll might be steep in price; but it's actually a pretty good deal as the chicken egg rolls are not only big in size; but great in taste. They also make the egg rolls fresh to order and so you are guaranteed to get a nice, piping hot egg roll. Aside from egg rolls; I have tried a few of their combo items. I went to Redondo Pier and had a meal at a restaurant called Mini Chinese Food. Eating outdoors while soaking up the sunlight was such a wonderful experience. I tried the Chicken Teriyaki & Orange Chicken combo and the Shrimp & Fry combo, and everything was absolutely delicious. The shrimp, in particular, was incredibly fresh. We always enjoy eating here! Quick, plentiful, and delicious. The owner is an amazing chef! And she is always so friendly and accommodating, as are her family members. I usually get the combo with the giant fried prawns, teriyaki chicken and chicken egg roll, on a generous bed of fried rice and noodles. Lots of different sauces to enjoy with your food, and ice cold drinks! Outside seating only. But the tables have umbrellas. We were even caught in a rainstorm once while eating there and stayed nice and dry under the umbrella while enjoying our meal. Excellent views too. I don't know what it is about old-school Chinese food takeout; the fried rice and the chow mein make your mouth watery. I have been hovering in LA since early 2000, and there were many places where you could get two items or three items combo with fried rice and chow mein, and they are just heavenly! Sometimes if they are feeling generous, they would top that order to the brim with food, and you got all this yummy goodness that can last for multiple meals, very cheap too! And, of course, this place is no different; everywhere else, you see seafood and crab establishments, but mind you, this one is daring to be different! The first thing you look at is the steaming fried rice and chow mein, their menu is simple. You simply pick your ala carte item with the combo. The eggroll is enormous and fairly tasty; the fried rice is fresh with big chunks of eggs on it. The chow mein is not glamorous but pleasant to the tastebuds. I chose to go with the fried chicken wing option, it was very nice; the outside is crispy - no batter, but the inside is juicy. You dipped it in the ranch sauce, and you got yourself a great deal. Slightly more expensive (around $15.00), but it is well worth it. It is kinda nice that you can still taste the old days of memories, and this place takes me back :) read more

After a night of drinking and not eating (thanks, Oriental Breeze), I needed some food ASAP. It was about 11pm and there was barely anything open on the pier. Luckily, Mini Chinese came to my rescue! They only take cash, so I had to borrow some from my friend. I ordered the fried shrimp plate. The food was out in just a couple minutes. Took a seat on a table outside and devoured my shrimp and fries. They were soooo good! I liked that they had a big bottle of cocktail sauce on the counter so I kept going back and getting more. I thought maybe I loved the food just because I was drunk and starving, but after looking at the other reviews, seems like everybody likes this place! I went today for an early lunch, the gentleman was super nice, the food came out quick (always a good thing with a 2 year old) and it was delicious. The portion was huge! Not a place you would like to eat, the owner/cook/cashier is not at all familiar with decent forms of customer service. Looking at my friends sitting on the chairs and tables in front of her stand and shouting at us telling us to go, while simply getting our things out of our bag is unacceptable in any capacity. Having to deal with her even BEFORE ordering made our visit here short and rethinking if this is how Redondo pier is now. Now some may say there food is good and that's fine however, no one wants to feel they are being scolded at something so trivial as seating. Would anyone want their family treated this way? Their children? Their grandparents? I love this place. I've been coming here since I was in JR High. Their staff are very welcoming and nice. Their Chinese food is authentic and delicious here. To name a few, my favorite is their shrimp plate #6, fried shrimp, chow mein and egg rolls!! They also have the best fresh caramel apples too. NEVER EAT HERE!!!! ALERT I saw the lady grab three pieces of chicken wings from the floor and she put them back in the frying pan!!!! I ate here before, but I saw something very disgusting. In a Sunday night we were walking by the pier, and at some point we were starving, it was 10pm when everything was closed, except this Chinese place, they were 2 people asking for orders, at the same time that we were looking at the menu on the wall, next to the wall there's a small window, since I want to become an Elite, I am trying to write detailed reviews mainly focused in some aspects like Cleaning, and unfortunately, when I looked through the small window I saw 3 pieces of fried chicken on the floor. The asian lady did not notice that I was there, and she was walking to serve some orders and she was staring at the pieces like for 2 times while she was walking from one side to the other side of the small kitchen, when the customer left she quickly grab the pieces from the floor to place them into a food container and she placed them with all the chicken pieces, what a horrible and nasty thing!!!!! She didn't even rinse the tongs that were in the floor too. I know that probably there's a lot of disgusting things done in many places, but no one deserve to pay for trash taken from the floor, how dishonest and worthless lady. It's a shame! read more

I have been going to the RB pier as long as I can remember myself as a wee tot. In fact, I remember going there before part of the pier burned down back in the 80's. Several of the restaurants have come and gone but the Mini Chinese Food stand has been there since forever! I miss this place now that I've moved to the OC, but I always make it a point to visit Mrs. Tranh (the owner of this establishment for over 30 yrs) whenever I visit. Mrs. Tranh takes some getting used to tho..haha. She may yell at you for taking too long to order, but if you flash her a smile and ask her how she's doing, she may hook it up and show you her friendly side. Don't worry if you don't get any love tho. Mrs. Tranh is very finicky about who she warms up to ;) If you do happen to feel the wrath of Mrs. Tranh on a bad day, give her some slack. She works there when it opens at 9am to 1am when it closes. Wouldn't you be a grouch if you worked 14 hour days? I seriously dont know where she finds the stamina to do it. Props to Mrs. Tranh for being such a hard worker! One thing you'll notice right away about this place is that it also sells cotton candy and candied apples. This might seem like a strange combination, but they are actually quite good! Everything is made fresh on premise, including the cotton candy and apples! My favorite is the caramel apple with nuts. Hits the spot after a nice stroll on the beach with my boo :) So here's my review about the FOOD: 1) Price: Yes, it's not $1 chinese food but you're paying a premium for beach front property. However, compared to the other hamburger/seafood joints, the price is actually quite reasonable (not counting the Hot Dog on a Stick next door). 2) Quality: I am very picky when it comes to chinese food b/c I'm chinese! I can tell if something is fresh by just looking at it. If it looks like it's been sitting out there for a while, I'll usually pass. On the weekends when I've been here in the summer, there's usually a pretty quick turnaround so everything always looks fresh and tasty. Alot of the menu items are made to order as well, so you are guaranteed scorch-your-tongue piping hot food just the way I like it! 3) Quantity: I'm not an anorexic tooth-pick thin Mary-Kate-Ashley-Olson syndrome kinda gal. Momma gots some luvin on these bones! So, when I say that you get alotta bang for your buck here, I mean it! I usually have enough left over to take to work the next day. Nothing like some good ole chinese take out leftovers :) yum-yum-in-my-tum-tum!! 4) Favorite things to order: Ok, here's a quick low down of what I usually order when I come here: a) #12 Combo (approx $10): This is their special that comes with a lil bit of everything. It comes with fried rice, chow mein, grilled shrimp skewer, chicken skewer, egg roll, and a couple of pieces of teri chicken. Why just a few pieces of teri chicken? I dunno? I don't care! It's good! :) This is definitely enough for 2 people to share. b) #7 Combo(approx $9): My 2nd favorite thing to order because you get orange chicken AND 3 pieces of HUGE crispy fried shrimp with the rice and chow mein. Remember to ask them for their tartar sauce and cocktail sauce for the shrimp! c) #17 Combo (approx $10): When I'm craving shrimp fried rice, this is what I get! You get 17 pieces of fried shrimp on top of the fried rice. I dunno what they do but the shrimp is always perfectly cooked- it "snaps" in your mouth when you bite into it. I can't stand places that overcook their shrimp and it becomes a mushy mess. Here, I am always greeted with perfectly cooked shrimp :) So the next time you hit up RB Pier, remember to make a quick stop to visit Mrs. Tranh! If you're chinese, you know that grandma always thinks her food is superior to everyone else's. She's always got a thing to say about someone else's cooking. But, this is one of the few, if not the only, fast food chinese place my grandma approves of. Family-runned. Devoted owner along with her sons. Nothing but cooking from the heart here. I made an account just to give this rude woman a bad review. The food was basic fast chinese food, a step below Panda Express. The problem is the terrible attitude of the woman running this place. She also wasn't even wearing gloves. Other reviews are 100% right, this owner/server is just plain rude, she has no concept of customer service. She pretended not to hear me trying to get her attention, I had to call her 3 times before she came over. All I wanted was some ketchup for my fries. She drops a handful of ketchup packets on the table and says "One dollar." I thought she was joking, then she drops the price to $0.50. Saying "Nothing is free." with a condescending attitude, as if I asked for a free meal or something. As if a little ketchup isn't complementary with fries at every single establishment in the world. This woman is out of her mind if she thought I was paying $1 for 3 packets of ketchup, not extra ketchup, just ketchup in general. What place doesn't give you at least one packet? So I didn't even bother asking for salt, figured she'd charge for that too. I just ate my bland fries without ketchup or anything. Don't waste your money here, listen to the bad reviews of this place. The owner/server has a terrible attitude, and the food is mediocre. Apparently she's served chicken that fell on the floor. There is a reason this place has been here for a million years, because the food is consistent, the prices are cheap, and the plates are ginormous. I am afraid to admit how long I have been coming here so let's just say I started coming with my high school sweetheart and now I come with my hubby. Do not expect new school gourmet Chinese here, this is straight up old school little greasy with a limited menu, and you can see them cooking it in the back. I love this place and my favorite things here are those giant chicken egg rolls, YUMMMY!!!!! and their chow mein, very good. The biggest draw of this place is that's it's open late. After a night of drinking at Tony's, just a hope skip jump away is friendly customer service waiting for you. The employee's make this place. They are cool, relaxed and ya know it's the service you get with a family owned place with people that care. The Egg Roll!! 2.50 for a Egg Roll and will always hit the spot! This isn't a small egg roll either!! You can have two egg rolls for 5 dollars and you will leave happy. The Chinese Food tastes great, sure it's not one dollar, but you can't get quality like this for one dollar! This place is open late, which isn't something the pier food places don't do. I've lived in the area for 25 years. I had disappointing food at other pier counter service restaurants and figured they were all pretty much the same. Was I ever wrong. Mini Chinese Food is awesome. The food is so good it is now a reason for me to go to the pier and get something to eat. The Fried Shrimp plate is my favorite. large shrimp batter and panko crusted that are properly fried in hot oil. They are crispy and not at all greasy. They come with an ample supply of shoestring (McDonalds cut) French fries. The food here is splurge worthy for dieters and healthy eaters. I just wish they had a stir-fried veggie dish. read more

I had reservations about a Chinese place on the pier, or in Redondo Beach for that matter, but I figured, "What the hell, let's try this place out - it got some glowing reviews, after all." Uh uh. Nope. This was one of those unfortunate times that my curiosity did not serve me well. First off, the prices here are OUTRAGEOUS, like that Britney Spears song! A simple two item combo runs you to about $8! WHAAAAAT!?!? And if you want a fried shrimp, that'll run you to nearly $10! Someone's gotta explain that shit! If I wanted to spend that much on meh-ish food, I'd just go to Panda Express - the orange chicken between the two are fairly identical. As for the taste, the fried shrimp made me want to cry, mainly because it tasted...flat out depressing...and a tad soggy. As for everything else - the fried rice, chow mein, sweet sour pork, they were all heavily lacking in flavor. Mleh (meh/bleh). If you enjoy minimal flavor and minimal value, then by all means hit this place up. As for me, I'm sticking to the way Chinese take-out should be: cheap, indoors/away from shitting seagulls, and in a much more ghetto location. Hong Kong Express?
