Great pizza, great steak and cheese! Service is a bit lacking. The fact that they do not accept debit cards keeps me from coming many times.

This is a legit dive diner, and really the only breakfast place around Lake Anna when we stayed for a weekend.

That said: Whenever I schedule a business meeting, I like to bring treats from a local business. The Apfel Haus stood out admittedly because of the German spelling, so I thought I'd give it a shot. And wow, I am so glad that I did! 10 AM on a Friday morning all of their baked goods were fresh, but the displays were by no means full. The pies looked amazing, but that would not do well for a business meeting. So I grabbed an assortment of pastries. Apple turnovers and crawlers filled with Bavarian cream and Apple filling, rolled in cinnamon, and sugar were an easy pic. But then there were sticky buns, and caramel apple buns, and cinnamon buns. But also sin-buns? I asked, and was told what made the cinnamon bun, A sin-bun was that they jammed a cookie in the middle! A dozen treats weight about 10 pounds, and these big tough burly men were asking for a fork so that they could eat them properly. Do not pass thru Louisa without stopping!

The servers were pleasant and responsive, albeit untrained on the menu or the happy hour specials. Two of them were quick to point out it was their first day and didn't know anything. Our server was clearly experienced but also on her first day, so she was unfamiliar with the menu. She was not aware that a menu item was unavailable, finding out only after she submitted our order to the kitchen, prompting my partner to quickly choose an alternate entree. Clearly the staff has not been properly trained by the management, or even given tastes of the entrees. If a restaurant is going to charge upwards of $35 for an entree, at least teach the staff what the items are and how they might taste. The food itself was average. My partner's alternate choice of fish and chips had a small fish portion encased in a massive fried shell of batter. It looked ridiculous. My sirloin steak au poivre was pretty tasty though. I would've enjoyed a bit more sauce and seasoning on the steak. but I enjoyed it nonetheless. However, I was very disappointed in the experience overall.

Introduction:…read more Finishing up the last 2 of the prior to 2018 to 2024 runner-ups to non-DMV picks in alphabet series. First of two 2024 runner-ups, B is for Bethel Brews. Although this is technically not in the DC-Baltimore area as it's geographically closer to Richmond & Charlottesville areas, I'm counting it for these reasons: 1. It was a good runner-up for the letter B, which my original pick was truly out of town by Smith Mountain Lake, also in Virginia, but way southwest. 2. This place was great, so I wanted to get around to reviewing 3. I had Louisa County, VA work travel twice in March & April 2024 and was rolled into the BAWA (Baltimore-Washington area) work market, perhaps because the Virginia market, which includes Richmond & many areas to the south & west is such a vast land area with many counties, they barely rolled Louisa into BAWA market. Experience here: Staff greeted me and was friendly. On Monday, March 4, 2024, I got a wrap & fries. It really hit the spot. Excellent wrap & fries at a reasonable price. I think I got one of their coffees that day, but definitely did in April as I have photo of the drink. On Monday, April 15, 2024, I remembered it was a great lunch option that I decided when in Rome to go back, got a fruity chicken salad, which was also solid. I was tired from all the driving and got some latte I think; it was delicious. I haven't been back to Louisa County since April 2024 work travel, but if I ever am, I'd try to return.

Dec, 2024. Another good quick lunch at Subway in Mineral, VA before doing our grocery shopping…read more We ordered the footlong #21 fresh value meal to share, which consisted of the Honey Mustard BBQ Chicken sub on a toasted Italian Herbs & Cheese roll ($10.99/1010 calories), a bag of chips, and a small (20 oz) fountain drink (+$2.99). The sub was described as combining rotisserie-style chicken, 2x melted Monterey cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, honey mustard, and BBQ on a roll. We loaded the sub with fresh spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, black olives, and pickles, and the honey mustard sauce. The sub tasted great -- but we were surprised that it seemed to include bacon, which wasn't part of the description, and didn't have a taste of BBQ (my bad, it seems that I needed to request both the honey mustard and BBQ sauces). Later at home, when we reviewed the receipt, we realized that we had been served value meal #20, which consisted of the Elite Chicken & Bacon Ranch sub on a toasted Italian Herbs & Cheese roll ($11.49/1160 calories). The description of the sub was very similar to that of what we originally ordered, except that it included bacon and different sauces (if ordered). Unfortunately, it was also a bit more expensive and had higher calories than what we ordered. Of note, the preparation area where the meats and cheeses are added to the subs is now blocked from customer view, so we would not have been able to see the mistake when the bacon was added to the sub. Also of note, the chips display has also been moved to a less congested side.
