We love this place! Breakfast and lunch both are always awesome...as is the service! Be sure to check out the clocks the owners boyfriend makes too. Quite nice!

Day seven of our road trip to San Diego, stop 4. With the disappointment of the Action Figure Museum's being closed for the President's Day holiday fresh in our minds, we went in search of downtown Pauls Valley for at least one experience we could take with us. It was only 10:30 in the morning, and the town was pretty quiet. Being that it was the holiday presented us with a bit of a challenge, as almost all the businesses were closed and the streets were deserted. I thought how cool it'd be to open a safety deposit box at the local bank. Like I'm some criminal trying to hide my money in all corners of the US, or put some memento of our trip inside it, creating a time capsule of sorts. But no, bank's closed too. As I turned to the main street that would lead us out of town, I saw a great big sign that begged further investigation. Mimi's Restaurant. The sign said, "come in here, do it, it'll be cool!" and I busted a u turn to park right in front. The metallic white shades were drawn so we couldn't see inside, and when I pulled open the door, I was surprised with what I had found. I expected 1950's classic with barstools, shake machines, and paper hats, but what I got was 1970's pragmatic. A wood paneled office turned diner, with second generation mismatched booths and an open service area smattered with appliances for convenience, not aesthetics. Sarah and I weaved through the customers that were all somehow inside and half outside their booths at the same time, returning all the stares dead on with smiles and head nods, and plopped in a booth in the corner. Now, we weren't that hungry, as just hours before our Oklahoma City hosts cooked us a massive breakfast. But we came in, we sat down, so now we must order something! But what was I in the mood for? The old, grey waitress with her friendly eyes and big smile came up to us and asked what it was that we wanted. I replied with "a shake, vanilla," and her smile disappeared. "We don't have a blender." I started to tell her that it was okay, but before I could finish saying so she skipped off and we could hear her whipping up a shake with an electric handheld beater. What an awesome day! A few minutes later I got my vanilla shake, and gave her a mad tip to which she exclaimed, "oh my! Thank you." Tip: try the special of the day, it comes with FOUR of the six vegetables they offer every day! Surely, lots of food.

You know its a real mom and pop joint when they only take cash or checks. Service was nice but I was cash light this day.

they now take credit cards, food is always good and they get it out fast. I love a good bowl of beans and made from scratch corn bread.

So much so it was almost entertaining just to watch. I really think they cleaned the door entirely every time someone went in or out. Wiping down windows (on the outside too!), everything on the table, etc. I'm not sure if this is because of the pandemic, or if this is normal. By looking at the menu/ visiting the website, we found out that this is an Oklahoma chain. I thought that was really interesting, since I've never known a place to have so many locations ALL in just one state (rather than at least being slightly regional or of course a national chain). I got the club sandwich. I'm not a big sandwich person, but it seemed good at the time. I was surprised when it came out cut up in pieces, but apparently this is how club sandwiches are served? It definitely made it easier to eat, since it was stuffed with ingredients. Everything tasted fresh in the sandwich. The only thing I didn't like was that it was a "double decker" sandwich. Since I'm not a big bread or sandwich person to begin with, and also wasn't expecting it to come like that, I ended up actually deconstructing it a bit and taking out the two middle pieces of bread. We got the fried pickles to share as a side, and it's really hard to go wrong with fried pickles! I prefer them when they are the slices (rather than spears) which they were here, so I was extra happy. I just love that salty sour flavor. And they came out nice and hot! So yummy!

We stood there for at least 2 minutes before an employee walked by and said we could sit anywhere. Ok, we found a table. Sat for a few more minutes before a server arrived with menus and took our drink orders. We were looking at the menu and it's not clear what you get with your selected item. I ordered the mushroom Swiss burger. I wasn't aware it came with fries. But surprise! It did and they were weird. My friend ordered. The chicken fried steak and was told it came with sides. That was not stated anywhere on the menu, so she scrambled and made her choices on the fly. We did enjoy the fried pickles and fried "cheese curds". The quotation marks are because true cheese curds are cheddar. These were definitely mozzarella. My friend is from Wisconsin, so we were sad to see mozzarella, but they were good just not what we expected. We sat in the room that you walk into instead of the room with the bar. All I can say is it was eclectic. Boho meets a longhorn cow. Pick a theme. Will I try again? I don't know. I know they are struggling and would like to support them but they need to look at their menu and hostess/service.
