On our recent trip to London, four of us went to the Steak Restaurant, on the recommendation of…read moresomeone recently relocated from California. I mention this because we have some amazing steak restaurants in SoCal. The restaurant had several families dining, and had a nice level of background chatter. Our chef took the time to come speak with us, recommend cuts of beef and generally go over our options. This was a lovely surprise as this rarely happens. We started with "fall off the bone" ribs and the Hallumi - (squeaky cheese - wish I could find this here in SoCal... if anyone reading this knows a place... please let me know!) We ordered rib eye steaks, I had the filet... with sides of creamed spinach/truffle fries and Mac and cheese. Everything was cooked to our liking, and the chef came back out to check on us. We actually ended up going back again just because the food and service were great. Look forward to visiting again! (Oooh... if you go, ask for their salts.. I liked the Merlot infused one)

Welcome to Highgate, Popeseye. What a great addition to Highgate/Archway food scene you are…read more As Archway locals we in our household are lucky to have myriad of eateries to choose from at all hours of the day and night, so the fact that we have ventured to Popeseye twice in a month after we found out about its relatively new opening should speak volumes in itself. It is just a perfect addition to the neighbourhood - right on the main road, easily accessible from the tube but quiet, and unlike many quick grab and go eateries in the area, genuinely a lovely place to sit down, even if it should be for a full nice evening or say, a date. All that for nonprohibitive prices for a steakhouse, and we have a winner. Atmosphere is really lovely and cozy: what really serves this space right is that it is partitioned into two parts - so even if it is full, you retain quite an intimate atmosphere (that being said, on Tuesday's jazz and steak nights, when all the visitors tend to gather in the back area around the band, don't be discouraged by the seemingly empty front part which you get to see from the front windows are you are walking by!). But let's be real, atmosphere and location is nice, but steakhouses are about meat, meat, meat! Popeseye has not dissapointed me on this front. The five weeks hung grass-fed beef steaks are very flavoursome and juicy. The cuts are generous and the steaks are finished just right. So far I've tried a sirloin and their 'Jazz and Steak Tuesdays' special of 6oz rump and they were both exactly as should be. All steaks come with a generous side of fries and a big selection of sauces for the table (standard and dijon mustard, hollandaise, ketchup, horseradish, etc.). The Tuesday special for £15 includes the 6oz steak, fries, sauces, and one small glass of wine - definitely a good deal. (NB for the jazz lovers - from what I've seen, the musicians have been quite liberal with their interpretation of jazz, but hey - this is not a jazz bar and they were still good musicians and on tune, so I don't see a reason to put my judgmental hat on). Everyone was too full to sample the extensive whiskey and desert menu, but look - if you are smart and unlike us, don't order the phenomenally cheesy, home meals memories inducing mac and cheesy for the table, maybe you can give that a shot :). Both times service was knowledgeable about their meat, pleasant and efficient. I left as a happy meateater and I will be back.

And for the quality of food you get, I think this place is reasonably priced. The restaurant is not far from Old Street station and has a pub feel, but slightly more refined. The staff was really friendly, attentive and knowledgeable on the menu. I highly recommend a reservation though as even when we came here on a Monday night, it was busy. I don't think you can go wrong with almost anything on the menu. Everything we had was delicious, and you can tell the chef's really know how and understand how to cook and flavor meat to perfection. The most surprising item though, is the White Chocolate Cheesecake. It is served out of a dish, tiramisu style, and is one of the best desserts I have had in a while. It was not too rich but so flavorful. So when you come here, make sure to save room for dessert!

Meat piled high with Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. It's eye popping and stunning what arrives at your table. Just look at the photo that I posted. Last night was my first night at Cabrera. I'm trying to make an effort to explore my location area…read moremore and support local businesses. Well, clearly I didn't get the memo on Cabrera, this place was amazing. The food was absolutely delicious! I was a bit skeptic at first just based on the fact the waitress was an older lady and there was some confusion when we asked some questions regarding the menu, but I was wrong. My friend and I shared the steak selection (£48 for 2 people) which came with Sirloin, Fillet and Ribeye. 2 steaks of each per person. We then ordered 3 side dishes to share between us - dauphinois potato, triple cooked chips and a portion of asparagus. All of it was cooked to perfection. The knife went through the steak like butter, the chips were delicious and the potatoes so tasty and the asparagus was perfect. I was getting quite full, with 3 steaks to eat, but I didn't want the meal to end, it was so delicious. The portion of chips was huge! We couldn't finish them. The potatoes were just addictive, I would happily have eaten it all over again. The restaurant soon filled up and I was actually really surprised at how busy it got. I naively didn't think that people frequented these local restaurants too often, but the place was really busy and according to our waitress, that was a quiet night! If only I could afford to eat here all the time! With it being a steak restaurant the price is more expensive than say going out for an Italian meal, but it was most definitely worth it. I can't wait to tell all my friends and colleagues and encourage everyone to go. I can't wait to go back. Cabrera is definitely a local gem.

After reading the reviews and hearing about it some more, We decided to make a day trip if it from London to Southend-on-Sea and see if the food lived up to the hype. Oh boy, the pictures don't do the food justice. Firstly, this is one of the very few places where the food actually looks like the picture!! So my hubby ordered the rib tips for a starter, daughter had the shrimp starter and I had the brisket end starter. We were bowled over by how delicious the starters were. The shrimp was crispy and just plain gorgeous, we've never tasted better, honestly. Just he shrimp alone made the trip worth it. The rib tips and brisket ends were also amazing. So yummy. For our mains, were we glad we'd starved before coming! Hubby had the manwich, massive sandwiches, never seen bigger honestly and he said they were sooo good. Sandwiches came with chips and coleslaw and he demolished the lot to the shock of the waiter lol. My daughter had hickory smoked ribs and that came with corn on the cob, salad, coleslaw and chips. The meat off the rib just literally fell off the bone. It was so delicious and so full of flavour that even she managed to eat most of it. I had the Almighty burger...there are just no words to describe the awesomeness of this beast. It also came with chips and slaw and it was fantastic I ate it all. The portions here are HUGE and we didn't need to eat anything else all day... Apart from dessert coz honestly we'd come all the way, why not have dessert hey? The dessert was amazing, everything was amazing. We were so full at the end, thank God the restaurant is right by the sea and pier so we had a long walk site seeing to get the food down before going back home. We are certainly returning to taste all the other stuff on the menu! YUMMY!!!!!! Service was really good and the music and drinks were excellent

As it took so long I then asked for it to be takeaway...They then charged service...Not sure what for. Mama's ribs coating was too thick and to be honest not very nice. Perhaps they messed up the recipe? Meat itself was very good, but I struggled to remove as much of the coating as possible. Sweetcorn overcooked. Staff seemed ingenuine...Atmosphere is pretty good, but pretty poor value and food is hit and miss. The place across the road is the opposite. Humble, delicious and well priced.
