So, I am ok with getting another when he outgrew the last one - which is still in great shape and we can re-use for his little sister. I had her stand on one to check out some measurements. The bikes weren't put away, they were just stacked by boxes in the corner. My daughter stood on one for a minute--I was standing right by her and giving her my undivided attention. At this moment, an employee (older man, white hair) walked by us and rudely said "no riding in the store." And kept walking. Not "can I help fit you for a bike?" Or "can I help you find the right kind of bike?" Not even a "please". I don't expect everyone to adore my kids, but I do expect people to be respectful to them and them to be respectful to others. REI will never get a single dime from me again. This is the second time I've had an unsavory experience with the same employee. I don't understand how it can be difficult to treat people nicely, I can find much better customer service and better prices at Target.

Enter through the building's Washington Avenue door, next to the barber shop, then follow the signs through the door there and up the stairs, where you'll spot them. I took it to the counter and made an offer of about 20% less than then we're asking. They accepted as I guessed they would. They're always quite generous. The woman who usually does the excellent work on the repairs that I bring in approached the counter. She started searching my new bag looking for the sternum strap that she knew should go with it. She couldn't find it so guess what she did? She went to the sewing machine and made one for me. It was perfect; useful the first time out. I asked how much she wanted for the strap she had just made me from scratch. "Nothing" she said. "It goes with the bag." This is so typical of my experiences at the Lair. They do great work. When I picked the bike up it was as good as new - everything I needed done was completed and they went over all the things they did in gory detail. It was exactly what I needed to hear to have piece of mind. Maybe this is overkill for most people, but I think it is good to know for people like myself but also for people with more simple bike needs that by coming here you will have people looking after your bike who really care about doing a great job whether you need an overhaul on your race bike or just a tire replaced on your commuter bike.
