I will start this by saying I loved this place so much before this incident, great food and right up my alley, was a frequent customer but will be no longer. I ordered two bowls for pick up, the one I got had white rice as the base and the other persons' had brown. We have been here so many times, I can't believe I haven't reviewed! This is a more expensive spot for poke, so we go on special occasions or do pickup when we deserve a treat. The bowls are generally excellent and we have always been happy with feeling full. I recommend the salmon bowl and building your own ingredients. Maker to get the dole whip! Sometimes the fish tastes really fresh, other times it is just room temperature. We've also done pickup a couple of times in the past 6 months and the orders were not ready when they were supposed to be -- twice our order was 10-15 minutes late. Let me start off by saying we were poke virgins. When I asked a friend what exactly poke is, and she told me, "you know burrito bowls? It's kinda like that with sushi." I have severe allergies to fish, shellfish, and seaweed, so I asked in advance how they handle these allergies. We ordered two regular poke bowls: chicken on white rice unagi style with cashews, and marinated tofu on white rice Hawaii style with kimchi. (The kimchi has no fish/seafood!) We also ordered a dole whip and a dole whip float The man who helped me order was incredible! He was very knowledgeable and incredibly patient with me. Got our takeout from here for the Yelp night! As the first poke place in town, they introduced us to poke and they are still our favorite. They always have pretty good portioned bowls with lots of veggies. You can get some great heat from serrano and wasabi. You can get some great savory from cashews and crispy garlic (one of my favorite ingredients). Whether you make you own or specialty bowls, they have always been good. I will caveat that with we generally get the tuna. As a tip, maybe get the sauce on the side because you can get more control of it, and possibly more, which is what it seems like this time. All of the sauces have been good, although I could have had a little more heat from the carrot habanero fire sauce. Everything I said before still stands. Expensive and average. This time I noticed a really unpleasant taste to the shrimp and the seaweed salad. Like a chemical taste almost like gasoline. I couldn't figure out exactly what this taste was, but I had to spit it out. Their poke sauce is so plain it's basically just soy sauce. This place came highly recommended but we didn't love it. Had one Hawaii style large bowl and one make your own spicy tuna bowl regular size. See the pics- same amount of food in both, just a different size bowl (and price!). Hawaii style over greens was swimming in sauce in the bottom (I get there wasn't rice to sop it up but if greens are an option then they should know to adjust ratios), and flavors underwhelming. Picking ingredients was fun for the build your own as selection was good, but 'spicy' tuna was not spicy at all and sauces were flavorless. Even with half greens and half rice there was wayyy too much sauce. The tuna in the Hawaii bowl was different than in the build your own? Hawaii bowl tuna was much better and seemed a lot fresher. Overall unsatisfying and there's better poke in town. Typical food fight restaurant- lots of potential but just not all the way there. read more

I've heard good things about Miko Poke so I stopped by on a whim this afternoon for a late lunch. The regular sized bowl is a good size and filled with fresh good quality ingredients. I tried the original Hawaiian with white rice and had the aoli on the side. The person who started my order handed it off to someone else to finish without passing along my "no scallions" request, so I had to repeat myself. Also, I think they both added poke sauce when they had the bowl so the rice on the bottom ended up far too salty to eat. Still, it was a good meal and a nice addition to the Madison food scene. The one really disappointing thing is that the restaurant uses all disposable plastic: bowls, cups, flatware; even if you're dining in. Given their efforts toward using sustainably harvested fish this doesn't make sense. I docked a star for the unnecessary waste. read more

I was looking for a place to get lunch while I was in Madison visiting friends and happened to stumble upon Miko on Yelp. Super happy that I did! I was craving something fresh to offset the rest of my guilty pleasure food ridden weekend and Miko hit the spot! Their house favorite poke bowls are pretty solid options and they let you do swaps for ingredients if there's something you don't want in the bowl. Otherwise, build your own is a choice that you can't go wrong with. Personally, for some reason whenever I get a bowl of poke, it always looks like I'll be able to scarf my food down in two seconds and still be hungry. One of the first Poke places in Madison, this place served as one of the first answers to my call for the Hawaiian treat that was once difficult to find. After coming here a handful of times, and watching the menu evolve to further disappointment, I feel confident I can give this place a fair review, where truly the bottom line is I wouldnt miss it if it were to close. The food that is served here is fine overall, fresh and made to order. Flavors of the menu offerings are as one would expect. What is really missing is authenticity and menu items that spark interest. Anyone who had been to Hawaii knows that the Poke bowls served around here is yet an approximation of what true Poke is. If anything, Miko Poke offers a deconstructed sushi roll with your choice of ingredients. I am willing to accept this. What truly bothers me, and drives the average rating is really the ingredients offered seem lack luster. Static, generally without imagination, and, with time, further narrowed to a limited list. This is complemented by Poke sauces that all seem to have a common baseline taste despite the menu suggesting they are all of variety. The Aioli options also fall flat on expectation. This bothers me the most as an Aioli is so easy to make and there isn't a simple spicy srirachi aioli or a garlic aioli - both which were easily found in Maui. While I will continue to go to Miko Poke and other restaurants with similar goals, I hope they will rethink what staple ingredient offerings should be and consider adding some variety in terms of proteins and toppings. read more

Our first trip here, and I loved every little thing about this place. There are many ways to build a vegetarian poke, which is important to me, and everything is fresh and flavorful! Since this was my first visit, I asked the friendly staff for their advice and suggestions in building my bowl, and they helped me construct a delicious meal. The place is wonderfully and quirkily decorated, with a strong Hawaiian motif and a mural of Tom Selleck lounging on Waikiki Beach on one wall. After our meal, we tried the shave ice. Of course. I love a lot of things about miko poke, like their sustainable practices and the curry aioli and perfect portion sizes. I am not a huge fan of eating raw fish served in the Midwest (I know, forgive my idiosyncrasies) so I have only ever tried the chicken - I do wish there was a little better attention paid to trimming the chicken pieces as sometimes you get a mouthful of yuck. My only other wish is that there were just a few more veg options to throw on these delightful bowls to mix it up every now and again. I think the options that they offer for curated and build your own bowls is good and the fish is typically very fresh. The raw salmon is an odd option. In Wisconsin, we are pretty far away from any ocean, so I'm a little hesitant about eating raw salmon. I think smoked salmon might be a better option. It is like an amazing bowl of sushi. It was busy but the service was fast and friendly. There is house creations or build your own bowls. I did a build your own chicken bowl and really liked it! The avo coco lime dressing was tasty too. You really can't go wrong in my book with some fresh and delicious raw fish, and Miko Poke always hits the mark on that one! It's really the perfect summer dinner, especially on those sweltering days in Madison. My first experience was mediocre, but I think that's because I just went with one of their pre-made bowls. Pro tip: always, always get a make your own bowl. I always do the regular size with an extra scoop of fish because why not! Never fear, your gut feeling about what you want in your bowl is going to be just right. If you're curious, I'll let you in on my very own secret recipe: a medium make your own bowl with white rice (carries the flavors better) and four scoops of fish (one tuna, one albacore, two salmon). Add the poke sauce, the ponzu sauce, and a little yuzu. The toppings: avocado, radish, cucumbers, cilantro, green onion, and Serrano peppers (the peppers are not for the faint of heart, let me tell you. I may or may not start crying at least once every bowl). Garnishes: crispy garlic, fried shallots, sesame seeds, and shake a whole lot of the Japanese 7 spice seasoning and chili flakes on the counter next to the cash register on top. Voila!! The perfect bowl, according to Amanda. The only reasons this isn't five stars are that 1) they can be really, really slow. I don't think it is (I also own unagi sauce and have been eating sushi for a long time to know). This is a very good option if you are looking for something that isn't to heavy but still flavorful. There are a lot of pre-made options to order from, but you can also customize and do add ons to existing combinations, which is what I would suggest. I write this, as I sit here wishing I had a poke bowl to eat right now. I visited Madison over the weekend and my friend told me about Miko Poke like a week before I was coming so to say I was excited is an understatement. I had looked over the menu before (obvoiusly), and was pretty set on the Hawaii Style bowl. Lucky for me, my friend also likes to share so we got the Hawaii Style bowl and the Cali Salmon bowl. Apparently, if you're a newbie to Miko Poke, they usually suggest the Hawaii Style Bowl. There's a bunch of other bowls that look really tasty too, but I was really happy with our choices! Everything is very easily customized, so if there's one ingredient you don't want, or one you want more of, they can easily help you out there. Whatever sauce is in the Hawaii Style bowl is HEAVEN. I couldn't put the thing down. The Cali Salmon was good too, but compared to the flavor of the Hawaii Bowl it seemed bland. The fish is nice and fresh which is the most important thing I look for. Service is great. The staff is really helpful and patient as they create your bowls. The atmosphere and vibe in there is really cool too. The middle long tables are long surfboards, and it's just super colorful. Now I wish we had a Miko Poke in Minneapolis.. because now I just want to keep going back to Madison for this! read more
