The Mexican Plate
Andrew K.

A quaint and popular family-owned restaurant in Tulare touted for serving the best menudo in town. Mike and Sophia are husband and wife, the restaurant co-owners, and they handle all the food preparation, cooking (with the help of their son), greeting, and serving. Therefore, they bring all the recipes from home into the kitchen and every dish. I will concur the menudo, a peppery, very flavorful soup made with cow tripe, was delicious. The broth was rich and delicately flavored with chili peppers and the tripe tasted fresh and clean, while cooked thoroughly. Starchy hominy in the soup, along with a choice of flour or corn tortillas, adds to the heartiness of this comforting meal. The lemon wedges, diced onions, and chopped cilantro helps eliminate any traces of the pungent taste and smell of the tripe. I recommend ordering it if you have a palate for offal meats and enjoy soup for breakfast or lunch. The owners told me the other must-try dish is their chile verde - a slow-cooked pork stew in green tomatillo and pepper sauce (salsa verde). It is another traditional Mexican dish that is among my favorites. The meat was very tender as you would expect from the slow-cooked process. There was not that explosion of flavors in the sauce but it was still delicious and I would order it again. I recommend the dish I ordered. The Mexican plate is a combination of meat taco, cheese enchilada, and chile verde. It is served with beans and rice, and warm tortillas for the chile verde. Interestingly, the taco shell was a soft, but deep-fried corn tortilla, giving it a unique crunch and crispy exterior and a soft interior. I liked what they did with the taco shell. It was a fusion of street taco and the Americanized "gringo" taco, complete with ground or shredded beef (or chicken), chopped lettuce, shredded cheese, and diced tomato. The dish needed a little kick from the salsa but it was, nonetheless, an enjoyable, hearty dish. It is a good choice for those who want to try several of their popular dishes. The warm hospitality will make your dining experience even more special. Complimentary chips and homemade salsa with your dine-in meal. The restaurant is a popular spot for breakfast and lunch, open from 9 AM to 2 PM, Tuesday through Sunday (closed on Monday).

This place is very small, so it does get loud. The staff is very nice, and friendly. The wait time wasn't too long. I ordered the muendo and let me tell you, definitely a 10/10 for their muendo. I was disappointed that the chips were store bought at first but paired with salsa it was tasty & went well together. I don't like that they have can sodas, I love a good fountain drink! Over all I will be returning for their muendo!

Compuesta with Chicken

We went to Mikey V's for lunch today and it was excellent. We got the compuesta with chicken and the California Chile verde breakfast burrito. Both items were very good. The Chile verde was amazing but wish there was more pork on it he burrito. The chicken compuesta was tasty and the toppings were fresh. This is a great little local mexican/breakfast spot in Tulare.

Pancake plate with side of eggs and hashbrowns

The food was good. Eggs pancakes and hashbrown did have that homemade vibe. The servers were nice. Its a small place but did have that old fashion cafe look. Made me feel like i was inside the cafe of the show friends. Wife said the menudo had amazing flavor. Our daughter definitely loved the beans over her quesadilla. I would go back to try other food on the menu.

Visited today. Great breakfast burrito made to order by Mikey V himself. Very welcoming atmosphere, and the place was spotless.

So, I had high hopes for this place, but overall it was a bit of a letdown. I ordered 8 tacos (6…read moreasada, 1 chorizo, 1 chicharrón), 1 burrito, and 1 crunchy asada taco. The asada tacos actually had decent flavor -- although the meat was a little on the salty side. Not a deal breaker, but noticeable. The chorizo taco? Honestly, tasted just like the kind you buy at any grocery store and cook at home -- nothing special at all. I was hoping for that rich, house-made taste, but nope. The chicharrón taco was probably the most disappointing -- it was basically a cuerito taco. No real meat, just soft skin, so not what I was expecting. But what really killed the experience for me was the salsa situation. They gave me just two small containers of salsa for everything. The red one was tasty, and the green one was basic but good -- but come on, two little salsas for 8 tacos and a burrito? No limes, no radishes, nothing to help bring the tacos together. We ended up trying to ration the salsa, and without enough, the tacos felt dry. Everyone knows a taco needs to have that salsa dripping down and a good squeeze of lime to really come alive -- otherwise, it's just meat on a tortilla. I'm giving it 3 stars because the asada tacos had potential. But the overall execution, especially the lack of salsa and sides, really brought the meal down. Probably won't be rushing back.

Theeeee place for tacos, period. Everything is so fresh and homemade. Don't walk, run to this…read moreamazing Taqueria. Never disappoints!
