10's all across the board! I was introduced to Kosher dining last week visiting Wall St Grill and I was very impressed with the food. Little did I know it gets BETTER! Hello Mike's Bistro The hostess (who I later learned was our server's daughter) was pleasant and prompt. The decor was sleek & modern. The walls were textured. They looked like suede walls. Loved it. Our server for the evening was Roy and he was a delight. I think he told us he was with the restaurant 20 years! After hearing him speak I immediately knew he was from my parent's country-Jamaica, so an immediate soft spot :) Before going OF COURSE I came straight to Yelp to read reviews, look at the menu, & read highly recommended items. So I was ready lol. My date was like "you already know what you want?!? You looked at the menu??? Duh. I'm a Yelper Anyway I ordered the Tuna Poke...it was DELICIOUS. The guacamole was some of the softest, creamiest, I've ever had. It was so good. Also ordered the gnocchi, we enjoyed & ate every bite but I probably wouldn't order it again. I didn't hate but didn't love it either. Entrees- I ordered The Short Ribs which was devoured in a SHORT period of time. So tender & flavorful, melted immediately upon contact with my tongue...insanely good. He had the ribeye. He suggested we share. I wanted to say "no thanks I'm good over here" but obviously he saw my ribs and regretted his choice. The short ribs were the stars of the show! ***4 1/2 stars*** After spending a good chunk of the last half year eating at some pretty overrated establishments in the Financial District, I finally supped at a Manhattan restaurant that deserved the hype. Mike's was the site of a business dinner this past Thursday night, and I can see why so many reviews also reference that type of event - it's a fairly intimate restaurant that's loud enough where you don't have to worry about other tables listening to you, but quiet enough where you can have conversations with colleagues pretty easily. It also helped that we were off in a side area that was a little more private. Full disclosure - I can't envision too many scenarios where I would buy food this expensive, even for a one-off, celebratory dinner. Especially with my recent recon work in Rockland County, it's clear that Kosher food has a huge markup for whatever reason (The prep work required? Because they can? Who can say.) but this was pretty nuts. Even when I go to a non-Kosher, higher-end steakhouse - Liberty Prime in Jersey City comes to mind - you're getting expensive dishes but it's more in the range of $50 or $60. When the food you're eating is teetering into triple-digit territory? Eh. The price tag starts to get distracting to my palate. But...not my money this time! I'd taken a gander at the menu a few days beforehand (not knowing if we were getting a specialty catering/party menu) and immediately was intrigued by the lamb dumplings ($34). It was also clear that the short ribs ($85) had a strong reputation, so those were top agenda items going in. Thankfully we got a bunch of different items from that menu so the research came in handy. I was a big fan of the Signature Tuna Poke Nachos ($43) that showed up almost immediately - if there hadn't been tons of other edible distractions I would have focused more on that. Very creamy and fresh, and the added bonus of not being too messy; nacho dishes tend to disintegrate right before they get in my mouth, but this app had the courtesy of waiting a few extra seconds before destroying itself. Some of my compatriots knew about my lamb dumpling preference and immediately alerted me to their presence on the other end of the table. (Hashtag not all heroes wear capes.) Honestly? I couldn't decide if I really liked them. It was a fascinating taste but my gut said there were too many cooks in the kitchen, so to speak - the lamb was delicious but I thought the spiced hibiscus tea gave it an overwhelming perfume-y vibe, which made me think they didn't trust the lamb to sell itself. It was warmly received on the whole, so that may be a minority opinion. The short ribs were excellent - $85 excellent? Debatable. One characteristic of these expensive dishes is that you don't feel disgusting after eating them. The ribs (despite literally being a hunk of animal meat) were very light and tender, so even after demolishing them in about three minutes I was still feeling frisky. The only item I had that I legitimately was a little disappointed in was the sweet yam fritters (I think $19) - great concept in theory, but they seemed a little bland and REALLY needed the sweeter fruit-like sauce that came with it. I'm not sure if that was more about the yam itself or the coating being too thick and taking away from the yam, but I was left wanting more from that. The service was top-notch. We definitely got special VIP-like treatment here so I can't say it's indicative of a normal dine-in experience, but I'll take it. The waitstaff was always nearby to fill up wine or water glasses without seeming oppressive or lurking right in the background, which is a tough balancing act. Would I come back with my own wallet? Eh, not sure. But I would DEFINITELY let someone else finance an expedition here. read more

I realllllllllllyyyyyy dislike kosher restaurants. Like...a lot. I go to them pretty often because of my job so I know the scene but Mike's is really good. Like...really good. And really expensive (but whatever, I didn't pay for it). The service is excellent and the restaurant is packed. You'll definitely need a reservation. The food was fantastic. I tried the gnocchi, some of the veggie sides, and I got the portobello salad and added salmon cooked medium rare and it was fantastic. Though I didn't have any, their steak look amazing and can feed a small country. For dessert we had the apple crumb, the chocolate cake, and the pavlova, all of which were delicious as well. My only negative comments are the fact that the prices are stupidly high, and apparently adding salmon or some other protein to a salad is a tedious demand for the kitchen, at least they were accommodating! read more

The food here is very good, no complaints on taste or quality. It is pricey but it's located in a prime location and kosher food tends to be higher. The cocktails clocked in at $24 each, they tasted delicious. Meat entrees were around $90 so this place is for those with expense accounts. Place was spacious, it was a bit dark. Service was prompt, friendly and we were very happy with the knowledgeable waiter and his recommendations. The only reason I left off one star was the end. This is the only high end restaurant where the receipt did not have the tip line, and the waiter said "they don't pay us a living wage so please tip in cash". Say what?! Bruh, we're paying hundreds for the meal, but you only take cash tips? Maybe I don't go to enough kosher restaurants and this is a common practice. I left perplexed as to what is going on. read more

If you contemplate the prices, this may not be for you. Manhattan eatery that makes no apologies for its being, Mike's takes care and focus of simple foods to enjoyable levels. Mike greets you, and the staff execute his visions well. Top service punctuates the undertones of quality ingredients and subtle flavors combining for an optimal dining experience. Kosher is an afterthought when presented through New American stylings like these. That said, Mike appears to similarly lean into basic and established culinary traditions that will harken people back to familial, grounded food ideals. Being from Louisiana, I can attest to the GUMBO as 'old school', like it's from a corner store in Lafayette. Mike commented that he learned his version from a chef in Hawaii... great job. Started my love affair with Mike's when it was in their old Westside locale...so so so grateful to have this gem in midtown now. It's my go to for dinner with clients both who keep kosher and those who have no idea what that means. Food is that great and consistent that I've never had anybody I've brought here ever complain. This night we stuck to chef Mike's staples on the menu, sprinkling in some specials of the evening as well. Sad to hear that there was a sweetbreads and duck breast shortage but nonetheless we enjoyed. His gnocchi is always nicely toasted and creamy on the inside, the supergrade seared tuna just melted in your mouth and veal special of the evening was stellar. He also had a special of lightly breaded artichokes hearts served on top of steamed artichoke leaves and it was quite reminiscent of an oyster on a half shell, just a kosher and even vegetarian version that was fantastic. A "porchetta" sandwich made from veal belly was phenomenal. The dumplings were in a almond cream sauce that accompanied nicely to the cumin laced meat mixture inside. Their simply prepared chicken entree was done so well and we couldn't resist ordering their staple yam fritters. A beautiful new space in midtown, waiters here make you feel like you are the only client they are catering to in a very good way and the food...can't rave enough. I made a reservation here 3 weeks before Valentines day and they kept it and confirmed twice. I got here a bit earlier than my wife and sat at the bar for a drink. Sitting there, the barkeep asked me if I was dining and what my name my reservation was under. Why? so he can transfer the bar tab to my dinner table when I sit! Awesome. So many places make you pay the tab at the bar and pay for dinner separately. Very smart of them. When my wife arrived we were promptly seated and provided with menus. It may have been obvious we were there for valentines day, as we were just a couple, they seated us in a "Red Room" . Seems like there were other couples in that room. The lights were dimmed and it was a very romantic room. The waiter was very helpful and provided the specials. We were taking a while to make a decision, since everything looked good, but the waiter was very patient with us. The owner Mike was walking around saying hello to some folks and he stopped by and chatted a bit. Very nice guy and great Chef! We finally placed our order and the food was heavenly. Wow, I wish I could come more often. It is a bit pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. I would definitely come here again, and hopefully soon. read more

Enjoyed a really wonderful dinner here with my family. The ambience is lovely (although the acoustics are not conducive to conversations LOL). We started with a bottle of Pinot Grigio which was a very welcoming start. Our water glasses were constantly refilled.Our server was very knowledgeable and was able to describe and recommend dishes. For appetizers we chose: eggplant with spaghetti Bolognese: delightful meld of textures and flavors, duck gnocchi: just as delicious as we had anticipated . Highly recommend., Sweet breads: nicely prepared - not my cup of tea, Yam Fritters with dipping sauce. Very tasty -crispy on the outside soft and sweet on the inside. We were also served some fresh olives and delicious Crostini with Olive oil. For our entrees we shared two main dishes for three people. The portions were quite generous and we could not even finish those: we had Mikes Famous short ribs: absolutely delicious well marinated in barbecue sauce so tender you could eat it with a fork alone. We then had the USDA Prime Cote De Boeuf for two: served on a sizzling platter. This was perfect for us since my Brothers prefer their beef rare or medium rare and I prefer medium. We all shared the same steak and were able to enjoy different degrees of cooking. The steak was flavorful and crispy on the outside. Served with a port wine reduction sauce which was heavenly. They also served a bearnaise sauce which we did not try. We ordered a mushroom side dish. It was a combination of various different types of mushrooms in a sauce. None of us really enjoyed this dish. It tasted like there was perhaps too much vinegar or something else going on there. I would not recommend this. For desserts we had apple crisp à la mode, and guava sorbet. The service was excellent. At one point I accidentally spilled my glass of wine. A busboy immediately came over,to clean it up,. Even though the restaurant was very full and busy our servers were always available. Without a lot of eating at a kosher restaurant experience, I will rank this as my number one (at least now). I have been here twice now and both have been excellent. Their lunch menu was the same both time, $75 per person for a four-course meal: Salad, Soup, choice of poultry, meat, or fish, and then a dessert. It also includes, bottled water, iced/hot tea. Both times I had a small steak it was very good. The same for my business colleague. The ambiance is unassuming with soft jazz playing in the background. There is plenty of staff and we were asked a few times if we needed anything. Their site indicates the table is ours for the entire lunch and no one appeared wishing we would move on. We made reservations both times on "Open Table" and when we got there, looked like lots of empty seats. I would suggest making reservations any way. It's NYC, you never know. Birthday Dinner The waitstaff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the items on the menu. To start we ordered the Pulled Beef Taquitos. My initial reaction to the dish was how very small the serving was, three small bites. While the size was diminutive the flavors were not. The beef was full flavored and the corn sauce was smack our face good. For the main we ordered the Duet of Smoked Veal for Two. This was comprised of a veal roast and ribs. The roast was succulent and delicious with a sweat sauce. The ribs were great, smoky with a solid BBQ sauce. On the side we had a mushroom medley, a mix of different mushrooms with a barley base. The mushrooms added a nice early undertone to the meats. All in all it was a great experience. read more

We came here with a reservation and had to wait until we were seated. There was a small group with one fellow talking a little loud describing an episode from the last season of Game of Thrones as the best episode that has been on TV ever. This pretty much sums up my review of Mike's. The person who took us to our table told us we needed to be finished by 7:45 for the next party, huh? Our order was taken and we were told that it would take 25-30 minutes to prepare the entree because the item we ordered was not completely prepped, hmm you do run a restaurant don't you? The cheapest entree is 34 dollars with most being in the range of 40-80 dollars. The entree is exactly that an entree, literally nothing else on the plate, so if you want to be filled better order some appetizers for 20-40 dollars. The food was great but it felt like I was dealing with a profit mill where everything was strategized to get every dollar out of you. We managed to get out by 7 PM so didn't need to get thrown out. Mike's sure its got GoT credentials in the kosher community but the reality is they aren't remotely close to best in town and if you want to charge these prices then you need to up the game significantly in all aspects. read more

I,ve been in this restaurant twice. Base on my experience I'll write what I seen needs to be improved. I,ve noticed when you come to a restaurant at the late hour like 9pm the waitres always rushes your order. I felt like you don't have time to even read the menu. They stop by very often and ask you: "Are you ready?" it doesn't feel that you are welcome to stay as long as you need. All about $$ I guess. Not a costumer service. As far as food taste, I wasn't crazy about that either. My friends steak was not cooked well enough went back on the grill. May be because everyone is so tiered at the end of the hard working day that they do a sloppy job. The restaurant is very specious has a few rooms. They also have full bar. I wasn't impressed by their bartender performance. They need to learn how to make Mojitos and Moscow mule. Both drinks was ordered by my friends they both returned their drinks. Had a great time at the Bistro here. Took my girlfriend out for Valentine's Day after reserving a few days in advance of course. The pasta was one of the best pastas I had and my girlfriend is already planning a trip back here for some more Bolognese that she liked very much. We got to meet the owner, Mike, who found time out of his very busy night to stop by and introduce himself, and it's something we appreciated. The service was excellent. Attended a family celebration that took over the entire restaurant. Elegant place, would never know it was kosher. Terrific food and service. Mike himself was out and greeting us. Only on Yelp could this restaurant have anything less then 5 stars (it deserves a 6th star). I am not a fan of expensive restaurants. Mike's is one of my few exceptions simply because the food is so good that you will be torn when you come back between ordering what you ordered the first time again, and trying something new. This restaurant is truly an amazing experience. I dined here with my wife and everything, from the ambiance, to the 5 star service and delicious food was absolutely perfect. Although they don't have special vegan section on their menu, they do offer a great variety of plant-based foods as well and since it's kosher and they serve meat you don't have to worry about butter/dairy being used in the food or desserts. I was planning on heading to dinner at Wolf and Lamb a couple of blocks away, but my friend recommended that we change our reservation to Mikes Bistro. So glad I listened to her! Mikes Bistro is by far the best kosher restaurant in NYC. The waiter was extremely pleasant and took the time to explain all of the different dishes and helped us choose our entrees. His recommendations were spot on. The last time I'd be there I got the most amazing rib eye with crusted pistachios. I was disappointed that it was no longer on the menu, but the waiter assured me that if I called a day or two in advance, they could have it for me! I will definitely be doing that next time I got back. My father only eats a certain type of kosher meat (Beit Yosef), so he called Mike beforehand to make sure they'd have something for him. I was so impressed with their customer service! When we arrived, Mike sent over the mashgiach (the person who makes sure that everything is kosher) to tell my dad what he could order from the menu! Recommendations: - Handmade Gnocchi: duck & chicken confit, roasted portobello mushrooms, fresh thyme, duck jus, white truffle oil, chives ($22) - Duck confit: braised endive, sour cherry compote, faro lentil pilaf ($47). If you want to get a different entire, the gnocchi appetizer is just as good (if not better), and will leave you room for one of their incredible steaks. - Short ribs: sun-dried tomato barbecue glaze, mashed potatoes, braised kale, turnip & mustard puree ($54). Mike's Bistro was an overall good experience. we were told to try this gourmet kosher restaurant and honestly it was my first kosher gourmet restaurant. The food was fantastic the service was over the top good. They obviously use the finest quality ingredients and really pride themselves on their attentive knowledgeable staff. the place was immaculate and cozy and cool all at once. We were recommended to try Mike's and we were not disappointed at all. every dish was excellent so try whatever when you do it will be delicious One caveat....I have to say at the end of the meal when the check came we were instructed we were not able to leave A gratuity on the credit card. I have never heard of such a thing and with only $10 cash I had to go to the ATM to make sure I was able to tip the waiter properly. I have been to hundreds of restaurants in the city and this is my first time running into this. The waiter said it had something to do with frivolous lawsuits or some thing i don't get it it is inconvenient so if you are going to stop by Mike's please make sure to bring cash or apparently they also take Zell? what if you're paying with a corporate card or business card? This is probably the top Kosher Restaurant in the city as far as quality and execution . Menu is of a sophisticated Steakhouse type with some great seafood options as well. We tried their shortribs and it was unbelievable, you could cut the delicious meat practically with a spoon, the Ribeye served on a sizzling platter was a perfect Medium Rare and definitely a home run... The sweetbread appetizer as well as the lamb dumplings were a delight. You can tell that their cooks take their business very seriously. This place is so hopping that you can barely get a reservation for 6 months. See Amy about that. She is superb and sharp and will help you plan an evening or more. We just hosted a dinner for 25 and got that wonderful private room in back. They set us up with three tables instead of one. We took the main table in middle and had the speakers do their thinh from there. The options or selections for the prix fixe dinner were superb. Had the veal and it was beyond delicious. Who eats veal anymore? But they knew how to prepare it and I also enjoyed a great soup. Potatoes, Mushrooms - who's counting. Scrumptious. Is that a word? I think so - and you should only use it to describe food. The wait staff is very accomodating and most of them spoke English. Sometimes I wonder if I still do. The service is great- every so often Chef Mike pays a friendly visit to the guest to make sure everyone is enjoying. Over my past few visits I've tasted a nice amount of items on the menu and I can't get enough of the gnocchi, merges dumplings, short ribs, lamp chops and I don't remember the steak but just show the waiter the pic that I post. I heard about Mikes for years, but thought it was a hole in the wall restaurant, as the word bistro made me think. Then someone insisted we go and we did. FIVE FREAKING STARS. The food was STELLAR!!!! Our waiter was so knowledgeable . We got everything from drinks to apps to mains to desserts. Our fave was the duck gnocchi and the steak. The veal chop had a cool farro filled pumpkin with a chestnut puree. I could have eaten a bowl of the puree alone. Quiet ambiance. Definitely pricey, but you get what you pay for. read more
