I was looking for BBQ in Philly and saw Mike's BBQ on Instagram videos. I decided to stop by. The service was good. The restaurant is small but big enough for small group seating inside. The waiter was nice and helpful with the menu. She gave me time to decide what I wanted to order. I ordered the Half Rack Ribs and a small order of Baked Beans with a Yuengling beer. The Ribs were good. It came with 2 sauces. I liked the sweet sauce more than the other one. I didn't like the Baked Beans. I didn't think it was sweet at all. This place has been on my want-to-try list for a while and I finally found time to go. Unfortunately it wasn't good enough to earn a second visit. We ordered their: (1) brisket (rating 2.0/5) -- This was quite dry. I was also surprised to see only 3 small slices after ordering a half pound. After seeing Mike's show up constantly whenever people online ask about Philly's best BBQ, I was greatly disappointed. (2) brisket cheese steak (rating 4.0/5) -- This was better than the brisket by itself. The cheese and other condiments likely helped with the dryness, so this was decent, although a bit small. This was maybe a little too salty, but I liked the bread. (3) mac and cheese (rating 3.5/5) -- Not the best mac and cheese I've ever had, but not bad either. Decently cheesy with good flavor. I'd say it's slightly above average. (4) cole slaw (rating 1.5/5) -- Strongly tasted of vinegar and even seemed a bit spicy. It was weird. (5) cornbread (rating 4.0/5) -- To be honest, I like most cornbread, even the cheap kind from a pre-made mix and fast food cornbread. So while I enjoyed the cornbread here too, it wasn't my favorite. I prefer the outer layer to be crispier and it could have been less crumbly on the inside. Service Notes: This is a fast casual place and service was fine. Food came out quite fast. I came here on a Friday around 4pm with a group of 6. It was only us and 1 other table of 3. I know a lot of people love this place, so I assumed it really was the absolute best. We came for the ribs, but unfortunately they were out. It's really surprising to me that such a popular place would be open for only a few hours 4 days a week and be out of food on the 2nd day of 4 that they're open for that week. Do they make everything fresh every morning they're open? Maybe. Anyway, we ordered 6 dry rub wings, 1/4 lb of brisket, a brisket sandwich, cheese fries, Mac and cheese and Brussels. The food came out quickly and we even got a handful of homemade potato chips. I'm giving a 4 because the brisket was DAMN GOOD, but I'm a bit sad to admit that I was disappointed with a few of the items. The wings were very dry. The flavor was good and the crisp was there, but there was not even a slight bit of moistness to those wings. The Brussels were very well flavored, but swimming in oil so not very crispy and the potato chips were overdone and tasted burnt. I didn't have the fries or Mac and cheese but I was told they were both yummy from my kids. Fyi, there's a 3% surcharge when you pay with cc even tho I have asked the girl beforehand, she said it was the same price cash or credit- guess she didn't know. I love BBQ.....who doesn't? I'd been in Philadelphia almost 5 years and hadn't found good BBQ, until yesterday. My friend had heard the story of owner Mike Strauss turning over the reins at the restaurant to Daniel Grobman, and she wanted to try it out. I'm so glad she did, because I hadn't heard of the restaurant, or the change in ownership. We got a Half Rack of Ribs and 1 pound of Brisket to go. When I got home, we put all of it into a skillet, poured some BBQ sauce over it, covered it with foil, and heated it up in the oven. The attached picture was after we took it out of the oven. We first had some of the brisket - it was so juicy, with a rich smoky flavor and a tenderness that melts in your mouth. I was so excited to have finally found great BBQ! We then tasted the ribs......we looked at each other in disbelief (with a mouthful of ribs). Is it possible these are even tastier than the brisket? I sat back and had to savor the moment - it was my BBQ dream come true. The ribs did fall right of the bone with a meat that had all the tender texture you would expect - these were 'award winning' ribs. small but popular spot in south philly! we stopped by ~3pm on a saturday and was shocked to find that pretty much the entire menu was sold out. i really wanted to try the brisket, but the food gods had other plans for me. i ordered the half rack ribs and my boyfriend ordered the gobbler. we shared a medium gouda mac n cheese. the gobbler was spectacular, the stuffing balls were the highlight. the sandwich was definitely overfilled and fell apart with every bite. the ribs were moist and flavorful. personally i prefer fall off the bone ribs and these were more chewy, but they still satisfied the craving. the ribs actually sold out as we were leaving, so make sure to get there early if you want a shot at any bbq. the gouda mac n cheese was creamy but lacked depth in flavor. i enjoyed it with the bbq sauce, but my boyfriend found it subpar. overall, this is a solid bbq spot! service was good, the employee attending the counter was super friendly and attentive. mike's is so popular that everything seems to quickly go out of stock. i definitely need to come back to try the brisket, it looks absolutely amazing! read more

Best BBQ in PA hands down. I've had some of the best bbq around the country, and I'd put this at #4 on my list. Excellent ribs, not fall off the bone, it's more of the kind you have to try harder to pull off. This isn't a bad thing, it's just means it's cooked differently than others. Extremely tender and great flavor, don't even need sauce. The brisket was potentially the best I've ever had. Even more tender than the ribs. Good balance between lean and fat. Extremely delicate and falls apart. The wings seemed a bit overcooked to me, I'd say pass on those, but when you go for BBQ you're there for brisket or ribs, not necessarily chicken. However the hot honey flavoring was nice. The Gouda Mac n cheese was amazing, as well as the pudding. The cornbread however was a bit bland. Overall, easily the best I've had in PA, with Jesse's in Souderton as a close second. The only places I liked nationally above this were Terry Black's in TX, and Bludso's and Moos Craft in LA. Kicked off my bachelor party weekend with dinner at Mike's and they set a tough bar to beat. The spot is cool too, small but you can tell it's a good time. Let's talk about the food! This really surprises me because I have never had anything less than an incredible experience for Mike's. The chicken I ordered was somewhat dry and the rub or whatever it is was heavy-handed. The brisket was not how I'm used to it, but was not bad. The mac & cheese pulled pork balls were not bad and there was enough inside of both, but they were bland. I don't know what they did with the slaw, but there is something different about it. This may be the best bbq in philadelphia. I have eaten at many bbq places and this is by far one of the best. Their brisket is moist and literally melts in your mouth and is so flavorful and peppery that it can bring a grown man to tears. Their ribs are also smoked perfectly and are also super moist and pairs wonderfully with their mild bbq sauce. Other notable main meats are their smoked Italian garlic sausage and pork which are super delicious and moist but are far inferior to their brisket and ribs which are the closest thing to meat perfection that I have eaten. Their sides are also amazing, with my favorites being their bacon potato salad (creamy and smooth with perfectly cooked potatoes along with meaty bacon bits) and their beans (slightly sweet but super seasoned and with large chunks of meat). We smelled this place before we saw it, holy cow was it good. They have a wide variety of bbq meats and fantastic sides. The portions are large and the staff are friendly. I highly recommend the pulled pork, mac and cheese, and coleslaw. The wings were pretty good, they're whole wings not just flats/drums - I tried buffalo which was decently spicy and hot honey which was sticky and delicious. Love BBQ. I was in Philly and heard about Mike's. We needed a meal for dinner, after a 4 hour car ride home. Mike's was spot on. First, they packed a massive amount of food in about 5 minutes. Ribs, brisket, chicken, wings, greens, macaroni and cheese and dessert. Well packaged and safe for the ride. The food was delicious. All of the food had great smoke flavor and moist. We loved the rub, flavorful and not overrun with sugar. We put the wings in the air Freyer for 6 minutes and they were crispy and delicious. The rest we ate right off! They included 2 types of bbq sauce. They were yummy but we enjoyed the meat so much nobody really used the sauces. Inside there were a few tables. Casual but perfect to roll up your sleeve to eat your face off. Greens were fresh and tasty. Macaroni and cheese made everyone smile ear to ear. Mikes BBQ is a must for locals and tourists. The food was absolutely incredible, and far exceeded the hype I've been hearing for years. I got the brisket cheesesteak - a delicious and unique take on a classic. Not a traditional cheesesteak, in all the best ways possible. Also best smoked brisket I've had in Philly. The chicken cheesesteak is also unlike any other I've had, in the best way possible. Deep fried skin gives a little crunch. Both sandwiches were huge - great value also, not overpriced like so many. They heap the meat on. (Who wouldn't love that) The onion rings were also a big order, 10+ rings probably, and perfectly crispy, great batter. A recommendation from a friend brought me here recently. I have really smart friends. Quite honestly this brisket is in the running for best I've ever had. It's a hard meat to get right. I'm telling you this brisket was absolutely like butter. It didn't need the sauce to be good. But man the sauces are exquisite as well. So I just finished some lunch leftovers (picture below) and said I have to leave a good review for Mike's BBQ. I've been following MBBQ on social media and have been wanting and desiring a chance to come out and get some of the great looking foods I've seen online. Yesterday, there was a special for buy a pound of wings and get one half additional free, so it was finally time to pull the trigger. I'm glad I did. I definitely ordered more than I needed but the leftovers were oh so good. Here is the breakdown: Pulled Pork: Outstanding. Lots of huge pieces and blackened ends that were so juicy and tasty. Added with the sauces provided (although not needed for the pulled pork) made this extra special. A definite must get. Rack of Ribs: Outstanding. Fall off the bone with a lot of dry rub seasoning that wasn't too hot or spicy. They reheated well. Baked Beans: Outstanding. Some of the best I've ever had with multiple types of beans and pulled pork chunks added. Perfectly seasoned. Brussels Sprouts: Outstanding. Just like fried pieces of candy with the shallots. So tasty and another must buy. I could eat these all day. Chicken Wings: Above Average. Very plump, but too much dry rub. They were also a bit dry and needed some bbq sauce. Korean Chicken Wings: Average. These were smaller in size than the regular ones, and the Korean sauce over them was not too powerful, but the taste was not to my family's liking. Not many were eaten. Mac and Cheese: Poor. Now a lot of you Yelpers loved the Gruyere cheese made Mac and Cheese. My family hated it; too thick, heavy, dense, and creamy. There was no "burnt" or crisped topping, and we tossed more than half of it. Sorry, Mike! Overall, we really liked Mike's BBQ and for the outstanding items, we'd make the extended trip to get some more. In these COVID-19 times, ordering is all online starting at 8am and they have pickup from 12-5 or until sold out which happens often. The service was excellent as we were texted right when the food was ready which was spot on the time I asked for it. When we texted back that we were on the corner, the staff brought out our food to the car. They were all masked up. I haven't been to Mike's in a while, and I used to think of it as the place with okay meats and pretty good sides, but this time it proved to be the place with really good meats and pretty good sides. I placed a pickup order early in the morning and many things were out of stock, but the website just hadn't been updated, so I ended up placing a total of three orders. Jimmy, the new pitmaster, called me to make sure this was on purpose, which was very considerate. Once I arrived at Mike's, Jimmy greeted me and we chatted while I ate; turns out he's only been doing this for like a month, but he seems to be pretty good at it. The brisket was stellar and the best I have had outside of Texas. Super moist and the right texture (pulls apart super easily but doesn't fall apart unless pulled), the real star of the show is the bark, which I was informed has salt, pepper, and a few other spices. They serve the moist when you order by the pound, and lean when you get a sandwich. I sampled some of the lean and it was just as good as the moist, which is VERY hard to do, so major props to Jimmy on that. The pulled pork was really good. I would have like it to be a touch more smoke-imbued and a touch more tender, but it had a great texture, was very moist, and had some nice big pieces of bark throughout. The hot Italian sausage was very tasty and not too spicy, but the texture was dreadful. Not in a way that makes it unpleasant to eat, but in a way where an informed sausage-eater looks at it and goes "yeahhh... it's not supposed to crumble like that." Jimmy said he's working on that, so I look forward to tasting it on my return. I got a half chicken, which was quite good but not outstanding. Both the white and dark meat were a tad drier than I'd like but not overly so, and the flavor of the meat itself was lacking excitement, but it was well seasoned. I was a big fan of the skin, which goes through a deep fryer before service and gets a dusting of a sweet-spice barbecue rub that is almost like if you mixed Old Bay with a bit of brown sugar. The tangy ranch sauce served on the side was fine but uninspiring. Also, most of the meats come with a Mike's bbq sauce and a sweet bbq sauce. The Mike's is less sweet and better in my opinion, but they are both very similar. I preferred all the meats without the sauces. I was a bit concerned when I saw that the pork ribs had an incomplete smoke ring on them, but when I tasted them, the texture was perfect--they're bite-able and plenty moist. They've got a nice bark that is a touch sweet and not overpowering, and my favorite part was the end rib of my half-rack, which was full of caramelized edges. Nice and smokey as well, these are really great ribs. When it comes to sides, Mike's does just as good of a job as I remember. The gouda mac & cheese is simple but not basic, and creamy as you like. The cornbread is generously portioned, tall, a touch sweet, and not too crumbly. I just wish it came with some sort of creative butter or other complement, since, while it's pretty tasty, it struggles to stand alone. The potato salad was fine but my least favorite. It was pretty basic but lent itself well to the red potatoes it contained; I can't decided whether or not I like the fact that the pieces varied widely in size and had different textures because of that. The banana pudding is described as "kicked up" on the menu, and it certainly does have some sort of rum-like kick in the caramel that sits on top, but I was assured there's no actual booze. The pudding itself was standard and very tasty, with decent banana flavor and custard thick enough that it leaves caverns when you scoop it out, plus some welcome wafers layered on the bottom. My only complaint is that the caramel sticks to the lid, hardens in the fridge, and then completely lifts away form the rest of the pudding when you open the container. read more

Finally tried Mike's BBQ over the weekend and we loved it! We got a lb of brisket, half a rack of ribs, a pulled pork sandwich, and corn bread, pickles and mac & cheese for our sides. Everything was so fresh and so delicious. I have to say the ribs were my favorite. Perfectly smoked, moist and peppery. The brisket was good too. Very fatty and completely melts in your mouth. After eating the delicious ribs and brisket, the pulled pork sandwich tasted okay to me. It's got nice smoky, sweet and spicy flavors; but just hard to stand out next to the ribs and brisket. The pulled pork sandwich also came with a side of house-made kettle cooked potato chips and a teeny side of coleslaw that I loved. Kinda made me wish I got a large side of coleslaw with our order. The corn bread was cake-y and slightly sweet, it was so yummy I devoured the whole thing and I don't normally care for cornbread. I am a Texan currently stationed here in Philly, and lemme tell you... Hands DOWN the best BBQ around the Philly area this is far! I ordered brisket, Mac & cheese, potato salad, and collard greens! Every single thing was tasty, the brisket only had 3 slices which at first I was dismayed by. But the brisket literally MELTED in my mouth and paired amazingly with both the sweet and mikes BBQ sauces. Along with the sides I was STUFFED. My man's ordered brisket cheesesteak and he enjoyed it thoroughly , we've both never had Cooper sharp wiz but we for sure love it now! So I've been stalking this BBQ spot on IG for months and even checked their hours to make sure I didn't miss out on an opportunity to try this place when visiting Philly since they are often sold out. We got 1/2 Rack Ribs, 1 lb Brisket, Bacon Wrapped Burnt Ends, Gouda Mac N Cheese, and Carolina Slaw for 2 people for about $77 including tip. In order of deliciousness: Brisket - juicy, fatty, tender, eye rolling and mouth drooling good. Carolina Slaw - tangy, crunchy and just yum. 1/2 Rack Ribs - falls off the bones but definitely needed bbq sauce to accompany it. Gouda mac N Cheese - I liked the gouda spin on basic mac n cheese which is creamy, nutty and salty. Bacon Wrapped Burnt Ends - 3 pieces to an order, much too dry, we didn't eat it. We went on a Sat at 11:45 am and there was a small line of people outside. After sitting down and getting our food, the line inside certainly got much longer. read more
