I don't generally write reviews, unless the service is exceptional. And, that is exactly what Mike Macchiaroli Tree Company is--exceptional! We had four of our large trees trimmed with Mike this summer (August 2019): two large Mesquites and two medium/large Palo Verde trees. I was very nervous about hiring somebody to trim our Mesquite trees because a couple of years ago my husband hired some guys based solely on the cheapest price and they completely butchered one of our mesquite trees which resulted in a lopsided mess that I am surprised the tree survived. The old adage "you get what you pay for" is definitely true. Needless to say, I did not have them touch any other trees on our property. So, although our trees were now seriously overgrown and monsoon season was upon us, I was really hesitant to have that tree and our others trimmed. I didn't want to make the same mistake again. So, I convinced my husband to pay more and hire a tree specialist. I mean it is not a wise investment to spend 15 years growing a tree only to have it hacked to pieces because it is momentarily less expensive. In the long run, trees are valuable assets of your home and it is really worth spending more to get someone who truly knows what they are doing. I did my research on Angie's List, Yelp and NextDoor. That led me to Mike Macchiaroli Tree Company. He had other great reviews and plenty of "before" and "after" photos in which I could see that the trees still looked like trees afterwards. I had Mike and a couple of other companies come out to give me bids on the project. Mike was not cheap or the cheapest by any means, but he really knew what he was talking about when we walked our yard looking at the trees and I decided to go with him. I am so happy that I did. I can honestly say that Mike Macchiaroli is a true craftsman/arborist. He really knows his trees. He even made my large lopsided, previously-butchered tree come back to life. It is finally starting to look like a normal, healthy tree again. All of our trees look beautiful! They are healthy and thriving. I am sooooo glad that I found Mike and that we used his service! I was very pleased with Mike's service. I called him based on yelp reviews, only to find that he was booked out and wouldn't be able to fit me in for over a month. He then got back to me upon learning my address, and told me that he could squeeze me in for my relatively small tree after a job he had in the neighborhood. His communication leading up to the appointment was fantastic, and his demeanor very professional. He and his guys did a great job on my Honey Mesquitte, and were cleaned up and out of here within about an hour. I was looking for a company that would emphasize safety of person and property above speed. After talking with several companies I decided Mike's tried-and-true method of tree removal would be the safest. We had a giant 80-foot pine tree with giant branches threatening our neighbor's roof and roots getting into the plumbing. This tree was three and a half feet in diameter at the base and was destroying the wall between properties. Mike did everything he said he would do including grinding this giant stump to 12 in below grade. ...and he did it within his estimated time. Mike viewed our photos online of our Itailan Cypress before coming out to assess the job.It was even bigger than he anticipated. The tree was growing quite close to our condo's back wall & no patio entrance from our unit except through our condo itself. Every branch would have to be hand carried across our roof or through the unit. Mike said he could definitely do it with his crew, but there is always some risk with walking each branch over the roof. We have 5 skylights to maneuver as well. He gave us a quote then asked about what our cost would be with a tree service that uses a crane. It was within $300 and he said to just go with the crane. We appreciated his honestly in assessing our big project, and steering us in the safest direction. Mike did an awesome job on a huge mesquite and some sensitive plum trees in our front yard. The mesquite was quite a project to reduce by half and still keep attractive and healthy, and he did it. Mike and his crew trimmed an overgrown Acacia and a large Mulberry for us. Leading up to the job, Mike came out quickly to give me a fair estimate. We scheduled the job about a month out, and he called to confirm the day before the job. Mike and crew showed up promptly at the scheduled time. Mike and his crew recently pruned, thinned and shaped 6 trees for me. He warned me ahead of time that he would be taking out (at minimum) 40% of each tree, as they were approx 7 years old and had never been trimmed before. Even so, it was a real shocker when the crew was done. I miss the shade and privacy that the trees used to give me, but figure it's like hair... it will grow back, only better. I know that in the long run my trees will be healthier and will benefit from the pruning they just received. Mike's two workers were polite, hard-working and cleaned up the yard beautifully when they were done. Final note... If you hire Mike to do the job, don't try to second-guess him. I used Macchiaroli Tree Company a few years ago and loved them. Professional, knowledgable & honest. Whipped our trees into shape, especially a beautiful African Sumac in our front yard. I called them again after a couple of decent tree companies had come out but I never felt the same level of confidence I felt with Mike. We had severe damage to our large mesquite tree from a storm. I checked out Yelp reviews and called Mike. Despite being extremely busy clearing other damaged trees, he was able to come out 2 days later, and his crew had to cut down the tree. There was too much damage to save it. They did a thorough job without damaging adjacent trees or power lines, cleaned up and hauled away everything. I think the price was a little steep compared to the tree service I usually use (who was unavailable due to health reasons). The reason for only 3 stars- I told Mike more than once we regularly have the trees trimmed, and he kept saying how important it is to regularly trim the trees. I told him we've had it done every year. I felt like he was bad-mouthing my regular tree guy like he didn't do a good job, or he didn't believe I had the tree thinned every year because it grows like a weed. I doubt anything would have saved the tree from the microburst that did it in. Let your work speak for itself and don't bad-mouth another company that has taken good care of my trees for many years. read more

We had an ash tree in our front yard with a damaged center section. We wanted to meet with an arborist to see what needed to be done. When we met with Mike, he thought some structural pruning of the ash would be helpful. He also suggested some soil amendments. Then we walked around the yard and had him look at our other trees. He suggested some other pruning. He seemed very knowledgeable so we hired him, and he came back a couple of months later to do the work. We were disappointed in the outcome. We had looked at our neighbor's sissoo tree in the corner of our yard with him. It was dangling over some of our shrubbery, and Mike suggested cutting it back. We specifically told him that it provided shade to our neighbor's pool and instructed him not to interfere with that. It also covered up the telephone pole and we said we wanted the pole to stay covered. He noted that on the contract. We were quite dismayed to find that he cut back about 2/3 of the tree. You can see the difference in the before and after pictures. I told Mike that his work on the sissoo much more drastic than we had talked about and that I thought our neighbors would be angry. He said the limbs were on their power lines and he "did them a favor." I feel Mike overstepped. This is not our tree. I was at home part of the time and available by phone when I was gone. I think he should have called me before proceeding, especially since we had been clear in our instructions about that particular tree. Our neighbors, who we love, are quite upset. It seems to me that if the branches were on our neighbors' power lines, it was between our neighbors and the power company, and Mike had no role to play. I would advise very clear communication - written and verbal - and on site work supervision if you hire Mike. read more

From past experience it is difficult to find anyone in landscaping services that is professional at what they do. I was very fortunate to find Mike. He is an Arborist with decades of experience. I had a Jacaranda tree and an Ash and Sisso that needed trimming. Mike and his crew showed up before dawn working without any loud power tools or saws. Be careful when dealing with Mike Macchiaroli. His proposal to trim our two, trees included description of work to be performed, total cost and a $300 deposit was required to get on his schedule. What he didn't tell us, and we should have asked, was that he would deposit that money six, weeks before work was estimated to begin and it would not be returned, for any reason. I found this out the hard way, when I called him on 3/2 to cancel work scheduled to begin on 4/10. He made it clear he was entitled to that money and taunted me with "if you tell me the truth, why I'm not trimming your trees, I may consider returning your deposit." One star for Mike seeing that our recorded, one-sided phone conversation will always be a reminder to a naive me, there are those that don't believe; "do to other as you would have them do to you." read more

The job was fairly extensive, cutting back 4 ficus trees that had overgrown and were protruding over my swimming pool, in addition to a sissoo tree as well.
