Our dinner began on a high note with the arrival of a small bowl of perhaps the best kimchi I have ever tasted: incredibly fresh, vibrant and leaving a bit of fizz on the tongue from its recent fermentation in the kitchen. According to our waitress, this venerable "Japanese Steakhouse" has been operated for the last 15 years or so by a Korean family and they certainly know their kimchi. We were also dazzled by the dish of exquisitely tender fried tofu our daughter ordered. But dinner went downhill from there. Sushi was amateurish at best--badly rolled and bland. My wife never found the "crunch" in her "tuna crunch roll." And the "fish tacos" were an embarrassment: What arrived were two hard shells like you would find from El Paso brand, filled with a tuna substance more like baby food and slathered with mayo-ee sauces. The chef methinks likes his squirt bottles too much. We never did see the hibachi pork belly special I ordered. After all the other food had been eaten, we stared at dirty plates and watched the hibachi chef entertaining a small group of diners at the far end of the restaurant. Our waitress explained that the process was "complicated." Finally, after the waitress failed to remove the dirty china despite several passes, we stacked it at the side of the table and asked for the check. She did not charge us for the pork belly. Despite our disappointment, we plan to return based solely on the transcendent experience of that kimchi and try the Mikado's Korean fare, which is almost hidden away in a lower corner of the epic Japanese menu. Apparently the owners are unaware that Korean is really hot right now. But never again the sushi. read more

It had been a few years since I last visited Mikados... my prior poor experience had kept me away. We gave it another try at their new location... EPIC FAIL! We had a reservations for 15 people for a birthday celebration and arrived 30 minutes early. We waited two hours to be seated! We sat at the bar for 30 minutes before we were offered a drink. Once seated, it went from bad to worse! Sushi appetizers ordered we never brought to the table... All of the meat was on our plates long before any vegetable, rice or noodles appeared. We were never offered refills on drinks. We were there for almost 3 1/2 hours and I was only able to get 1 ginger ale. To top it off, one couple from our group was asked to leave because the bartender formed an "opinion" that he was inebriated! He had 1 beer! "A Suitable Solution" Strolled in without a reso, didn't plan on eating here but that is where we landed. The décor and recent makeover looked nice, it definitely needed it. Vibrant, fun new look. We chose hibachi and also ordered appetizers and sushi. The edamame was over cooked it was annoying to eat but what tasted like a mixture of sea salt and butter that was added to it was a pleasant surprise. Sushi options and variety were much more elaborate than I expected. We chose several and enjoyed them all. Some were some of the better sushi we have had locally and others were a substandard version. The soup and salad that was brought to us prior to our entrée was decent. The salad was the same awkward "American house salad-iceberg, cucumbers, tomatoes, and red onion" with the random "Asian touch" of the repetitious ginger dressing. The soup, however was a change, and a pleasant one. A clear broth with scallions and mushrooms, nice flavor, nice change. The hibachi meal itself was decent and very large portion. The chicken actually had flavor and wasn't dried out. Steak, the same, cooked perfectly. Spring for the fried rice in addition to the noodles, probably one of the better ones I have had at a hibachi. Skipped dessert as we had more than enough to eat and were taking home large portions as leftovers. Good bang for the buck would go back again but wouldn't be my first choice in downtown eating. read more

My partner and I tried it for the fist time last night. We wanted the hibachi table, but as there were no others dining ,we were relegated to a table for two (or we could wait for more people to show up, and then they would accommodate us). New to this type of food, we were a bit at a loss as to what to order. Our fault completely...However, we both ended up with soup dishes. I wish the menu had a bit of explanation. We had a soup app and then a soup dinner. Not what I expected when I order duck. Again our fault. The flavors were excellent and delicious, but not what we wanted. Our server was excellent, but explained everything AFTER our food was delivered and half eaten, we actually added spring rolls to our dinner halfway through. I was disappointed in the lack of communication. It was very flavorful, but left me disappointed. I guess I needed some guidance, and I really wanted the hibachi experience. Again, my fault, but I shouldn't have to work so hard to order dinner. The fried ice cream was yummy---needed solids after all that soup, cost was 72.00 and added 20.00 tip. We will try again as all the food was beautifully prepared. I now know how to order. An expensive lesson read more

I've been going to mikado for 12 years. I've never been disappointed. The sushi outstanding. I've been to nobu and nobu next door in NYC. I always find myself craving mikado sushi. My family and friends love their hibachi tables and the waiters and waitress are awesome. And when mikado gets busy the staff does the very best to accommodate everyone. They have been around for more than the 12 or so years ,( I think) but my family and I have been going since my son was 4. He's now 18. and yes they may need some paint but I promise you , you'll never notice once the food hits your mouth!! read more

I can not say enough good things about this place... Service is always outstanding. I have eaten in the restaurant 15-20 times and have probably done a equal number of take out meals to bring home for the wife and I on nights we don't have a babysitter.... I have not eaten many things from the menu because the Sushi is that good.... We order 5-6 rolls and eat that as our whole meal. If you like spicy the Heartattack roll is awesome. Danny and Joe the Sushi guys are always awesome and make you feel at home by calling you by name when you come in. They always bring me some edamame, or a seaweed salad when I am waiting for pick up along with a Sapporo. I don't even need to ask.... They have a cooked edamame that is amazing, I am not sure what the seasoning is but its outstanding. I highly recommend this place. It might not be pretty to look at but i can't wait to see their new location on Glen they are moving into in a few months.... Try it! read more

After waiting for 20 minutes at Siam Thai Sushi, and not even having the hostess address our existence we left and headed to this local restaurant, Mikado. Expecting that the service couldn't be much worse in this fairly empty eatery, we entered and were told to sit where ever. Unfortunately, we had to wait 15 minutes for a menu; just one for two people. I love cocking my neck at a 90 degree angle and sharing a menu with the person across from me. It only required hunting down a waitress after 20 minutes of waiting to have our orders taken. After ordering, and waiting another 15 minutes our waitress came over and asked if she forgot anything... Making her seem ever more incompetent. Our appetizer eventually trickled out (the zombie roll was good) and then we only had to wait a mere 40 minutes for the entree to follow. The food was mediocre... Not worth the time or money. read more

Sushi roll selection is great, but the restaurant needs a remodel... Last time I ate there my table shook it was so beat up, and the drinks left something to be desired. Overall I like the food, but usually skip it bc of the atmosphere. read more

I ate here in October 2011. I ordered the shrimp and vegetable tempura and my guest ordered chicken terryaki. We also ordered a beef roll appetizer. The waitress was nice and took our order in a timely manner. We received our drinks and our appetizer within a few minutes of sitting down. So far so good on the timing, but the beef roll left something to be desired. It was literally drippping with grease. Needless to say we didn't bother eating it. I hoped the entrees would be better than the appetizer. My guest liked his terryaki (what can you do wrong with that anyway) but the tempura was dripping with grease and it was served with an ice cold dipping sauce. I've eatten tempura in lots of Japanese restaurants and have never received it with an ice cold sauce. Sort of defeats the purpose of ordering hot food. I asked the waitress if this should be served hot, or at least warm, and she informed me that was how they served it there. She did take it back and warm it up. I took all the greasy batter off the shrimp and vegetables and half-heartedly ate my meal since I was starving at the time and didn't want to wait for them to make another entree for me. While the service was good the food was below par. There are just too many places to eat in Glens Falls to waste money going there again. read more
