My new favorite design store in the East Bay. I'd been wanting a reason to engage Mignonne in some capacity since purchasing my small, unique home in Oakland. I prefer items with character and a story, as opposed to an off the shelf, Pottery Barn-esque aesthetic. That doesn't mean I don't do "high/low"...I most definitely DO. But it's gotta be interesting and not matchy matchy. After searching for *months* for the right wall mirror to brighten my semi-dark bedroom, I found the perfect piece at Mignonne. But let's start by telling by the truth: I was lured into the store by the owner's beautiful dog, Sailor, who was sunning herself in her window perch on a recent Sunday. I just happened to have another errand on the same stretch of San Pablo Ave (the power of dogs!) Sailor is so sweet and welcoming...after she got me in, she literally followed me around the shop sniffing out the items that would look great in my place. EUREKA! We spotted a cool, vintage mirror in an interesting shape. However, I found the wood a little dark for my space. Not only did Johnelle negotiate a reasonable price on the piece, she worked with me on an interesting "whitewash" finish that changed the entire look by lightening up the wood. I could not be more thrilled with the finished product! The wood finish Johnelle chose maintained the integrity of the wood grain (even highlighted it) and lent the simple piece a truly one of a kind look. It's so cool that when another customer spotted them working on it, they offered to buy it on the spot (good thing I paid in full up front!) Beyond that, the people who own and work at Mignonne are so friendly, open and delightful to work with. Johnelle even invited me to a reception/party the following Sunday - so much fun. I will *definitely* continue to patronize Mignonne and can't wait to collaborate on our next project. Because that's what it is: a true collaboration. This review is for the design services that the Mignonne team provided for me recently. They redid my living room and I honestly could not be happier with what they've done. What a great shop with a friendly staff! I went in one day to find look for a gift and found out they do upholstery, too. They had some upholstered pieces in the shop so you could see the quality. If you want to be taken seriously show up with a Benjamin taped to your forehead or easily identifiable Designer clothing that can give her a quick evaluation of weather you can afford her overpriced crap furniture she calls vintage. The fact is her products are budget flea market junk that has had a quick sand job, paint job, and a 300% mark up. Johnelle is an interior designer by trade and her shop, Mignonne Decor reflects it by the beautiful window display and the charming set up. It's a rare find here: that shabby chic look I've been searching for, that intentional yet unpretentious vintage piece without the pricetag of an antique store. I bought a small side table from Mignonne and had Johnelle paint over the piece in yellow with that torn edges shabby look. Wah lah, she did it well, and finished it speedily. I was a happy customer. A magnificent find! I went in for the first time last Sunday and found a great metal cabinet from the 40s. It was slightly out of my price point, but Rebecca--the super friendly salesgirl--called up the owner and found out it was 25% off and informed me they had lay-a-way! I've never purchased anything on lay-a-way before, but it was really easy and the best part was I could take the piece home after my first payment. A little bit of Paris in downtown Oakland. I stumbled upon this two year old store tucked away in Old Oakland. If I had another place to decorate, I'd come here. Johnelle was very patient with me throughout the re-upholstery process, I couldn't make up my mind and she helped me sort through ideas I had and worked with me as I neared my final decision! I finally decided on recovering an ottoman and it came out very well, I love it. Absolutely love this place! The antiques are done with style and a modern twist. They also offer custom upholstery, paint colors, and stains for those that have something in mind. My husband and I bought a dining room table here and brought it with us before we moved out of The bay. We wanted to buy everything!! Great value, great service, and always good for the unusual find. Over the last year we added many things from Mignonne to our inventory, from glass-mounted photographs to cabinet knobs to cabinets. Johnelle also refinished our kitchen table beautifully, from color scheme to natural oil finish - it was quite a mess before with an ugly dark-brown epoxy finish. Sometimes furniture has greater significance to us than its form or function. That armchair that my great-grandfather sat in every evening to read the news. That desk where my grandmother did her genealogy research. That footrest my feet never quite reached when I was a boy. My grandmother died early in 2016, and I inherited her furniture. It was solid, old-school furniture, built to last. But it'd seen several lifetimes of use and wear, and I wanted it to last another several lifetimes. So I went to Mignonne Decor after reading good reviews online. I wasn't disappointed. Johnelle and her staff were fantastic from start to finish. It was a thoughtful and careful project, and we injected some new aesthetic ideas into the pieces while also keeping true to their roots. They worked with me every step of the way, and kept me very well informed as the work progressed. I was immensely happy with the results and still am a little over a year on from the final delivery. I'm sure that these furniture pieces will last another several lifetimes now, and will hopefully be the pieces my children and grandchildren inherit with fondness when I'm gone. Looking for some closing gifts for a client I stumbled upon this beautiful boutique. The owner was there and she was very helpful with guiding me. I ended up getting a couple whiskey snifters (had to google that term as I'm not that classy). The clients loved them but they may have enjoyed the way Johnelle wrapped everything even more. If there was an option to give this business 0 stars then I would do so. The owner Jonelle was extremely condescending from the minute we tried to make an appointment to reupholster two cushion covers. We ended up going with another business because of the price tag for the two leather cushion covers was over $900. Keep in mind Mignonne will charge you $85 for a consult fee (which is in the fine print) if you decide not to go with them. The owner also tried to charge us $30 for keeping our cushions in her shop for three weeks while we were out of the country. Bottom line is if you are looking for good customer service and not outrageous prices - look elsewhere. read more

Since then we've upgraded and bought our house in Oakland. The owner Johnelle, is a truly talented designer with an eye for detail. I'm kinda biased here because Old Oakland has become one of my favorite destinations in Oakland for reasons from the obvious (rad) to the not-so-obvious unless you spend time in the area (even more rad....its the most neighborhoody section of Oakland). Mignonne is one of the places that fits into both of the above mentioned categories. Vintage wall plaques from 1978 in mint condition for under $20? Re-purposed furniture (i.e. second hand) made to order and not millions of dollars? Hand cut soaps from France? Seriously, park your bike-car next to the random pieces getting worked on out front and enter another universe filled with the best of several decades! The owner, Johnelle, is a remarkably resourceful, creative woman...she found me the most perfect 1970s hallway table with removable legs!! I love that Oakland can host an artist run re-purposing furniture workstation/vintage boutique modeled after a Parisian studio and not have it located on Piedmont or College Ave....as if Oakland needed another enclave of awesomeness, Mignonne presents yet another reason to be downtown! read more

My experience at this place prompted me to write my first Yelp review, especially because of the disconnect between the 5-star rating and my experience. My experience rated only 1-star, due the extremely dismissive attitude from Johnelle. I was looking to re-upholster 6 dining chairs, which I thought was a decent size project and would warrant the appropriate attention. I called ahead to find out if this is something they are interested in doing, as I was aware of the artsy pieces they usually deal with. I was told - sure, send us an email with a photo, we will suggest places to look for fabric and we can get started. So far so good. I emailed the photo, get a couple of reccs for fabric stores. After checking out the fabric stores and getting swatches, I went to Mignonne to check whether the fabric I picked was appropriate and this is where things went downhill. Johnelle pretty much flat-out told me that if I wanted a design consultation, this is something they charge for. Otherwise - I needed to to call around till I found the appropriate fabric. Uhm, I did that already, just wanted to check in with you before I bought enough for 6 chairs. Another irritated look by Johnelle, with an explanation of their business - Please, look around, we deal with one-of-a-kind pieces, mostly vintage fabric, and create artistic furniture pieces. If you need something else, you need to do your own legwork, adding that if I didn't think this was the right fabric, I should check online. Then she simply walked behind her desk, sat at her computer and the audience was obviously over. Now, I understand that their main business is artsy pieces. This is why I checked with them first to see if my project was something they wanted to do. I wasn't expecting a whole lot of hand-holding, but a simple fabric swatch consultation was certainly appropriate. I give the place 2 stars, because they really did have interesting pieces on display. If you are looking to create an art piece, this might be the right place for you. However, if you have a more basic project and budget, you need to look elsewhere, because Johnelle is not interested in your business. And she might not tell you that until you have committed some time and effort to the project. I would go down the street to Giocomo, you will get excellent service there. read more

Mignonne Decor just remodeled our salon--Keter on Fourth Street in Berkeley (shameless plug!) and it looks Fab-U-Lous!! Johnelle has such a great eye and took our salon to the next level. My favorite part is the industrial whip she used as a light fixture, or maybe it's the herringbone recycled wood floor that was installed piece by piece, oh wait! maybe my fave is the new custom, handmade reception seat cushions in a luscious velvet fabric?!?! I can't decide! But what I do know is that our salon now has a lovely rustic feel that fits easily with the Fourth St. vibe. Everyone should rush to Mignonne and hire them for their next design project. Oh yeah! I am thrilled with the final result, which is a bit more funky and creative than I initially thought I wanted, but I am now so happy that I have a lovely and very unique desk chair. I had this idea wandering around in my brain for quite some time to take a ratty old chair and reupholster it using scraps of African wax prints that I had laying around. I brought the whole kaboodle to Johnelle and she understood exactly what I wanted and executed it perfectly!! Johnelle is a rockstar...and an artist! I had an armchair re-upholstered that was structurally nice but had very drab fabric. Johnelle offered a selection of textiles based on what I had envisioned and added some of her own. We then downselected the many choices to three (2 main fabrics for covering and 1 for piping). The chair now feels fresh and clean and new, like I'm on vacation! If you haven't a clue as to what you want (stylistically or otherwise), no worries, Johnelle has a marvelous sense of textures, fabrics, and colors. If you have an idea, she's great at translating it into fabrics and possible combinations. I found that she had an uncanny ability of knowing what I wanted and I think this is at least partly because she's a good listener. I plan on becoming a repeat customer! read more

I'm quite a bit late in posting this review -- we actually used Mignonne a few years ago -- but my wife and I were just talking about the chair that they re-upholstered for us and so I wanted to make sure I came back and gave them some much-deserved credit. Johnelle worked with us to give new life to a chair that meant a lot to my wife since it came from her grandmother. After listening to our thoughts, Johnelle suggested a fabric and piping that was a perfect fit for our design sense and for the chair. (We even searched around just to see what other options were out there and eventually came back to Johnelle's selection.) When we got the chair back, we were (and still are) so happy with the way it turned out. I highly recommend Johnelle and Mignonne if you have furniture that needs new life. read more
