What caught my eyes about Miette? It was the cuteness of this bakery with the cakes, cupcakes, cookies, bags of assorted candies so daintly displayed, but mainly it was the macarons in their beautiful jars and the labels of the different flavors. The ladies were extremely friendly and helpful. They also came to my rescue, as I was desperately in need of a 16.9 oz. bottle of Crystal Geyser (ice cold), which they had for $2.00. That was better than paying $4.00 for a cup of water at the Eat Real Festival. Taylor's Tonics helped somewhat, but nothing...nothing does it for me than a bottled water to rejuvenate me and to give me a sense of refreshment. I love macarons and I gotta get some...one raspberry and one hazelnut please. Price: $3.70. The macarons were good (3.5 stars), especially the hazelnut one. It had a nice and distinct hazelnut flavor (creamy filling), but I just was not quite feeling it with the cookie part...kinda dry and it did not have that soft texture of a delicate macaron as two other places that carry them. Their macarons are different... it is a cakey consistency instead of the light airy chewy macarons I'm used to. I didn't like it at all. I guess I like it a little more French. Not many choices on flavors but for what is there, its well done. Its out of my price range but you are paying for the cuteness and matching color perfections. My fav are: carrot cake- lots of walnuts, spice and not too heavy. chocolate caramel-great ingredients to spoil your palette, soft and chewy. Browsing this sweet shop always brightens my day a little. It's so pretty inside. It's a shame everything is so darn expensive here. A lot of the candies are copies of haribo or jelly belly, but at maybe quadruple the price, just in really beautiful packaging. The macarons are $1.75 and not the best I've had. I wouldn't buy them again. Paulette in SF makes a better macaron, but even those don't compare the the ones in Paris. I do love the old fashioned chocolate cupcake with italian meringue icing topped with a candied peanut, but at $3.25 it's not something I can justify all the time. read more

What a cute bakery in Jack London! Its right next to BocaNova. In there my mission was macaroons. I love trying macaroons from different places. Coming in you're taken back by the pastel colored designs and the aroma of sweets. The lady was real nice giving you samples of their cookie that day. I ordered 8 pieces of macaroons which was 14.95 and I ordered one meringue cupcake (I couldn't resist). Macaroons: DELICIOUS. I am a HUGE fan of MIette. I have been to the one in the Ferry Building and love the macaroons and other goodies they make. I had heard that they were going to open up a store at the bakery in Oakland where their goodies are created. Surprise surprise, I was walking around Jack London Square and found this location open. Apparently they just opened up last week. I felt like I had discovered secret treasure. The euphoria came down soon when I realized that they had very few items for sale, some macaroons (thanks goodness) and a few cup cakes. They also teach lessons here for those who are interested. Stopped by during the Eat Real Festival to pick up some desserts for a dinner party, and though the expensive prices did make me think twice about purchasing, the customer service here was excellent. I was also debating whether to buy the cakes, because I didn't know how much longer I would be staying at the festival, so the cashier offered to keep them for me for pickup and even said she'd stay past closing if necessary. I ended up purchasing 3 mini Scharffen Berger cakes (original price $6 but I somehow got charged $5), and also tried the vanilla, hazelnut, and pistachio macaroons ($1.75 each). The cakes were moist, thick, and the ganache was not too sweet. And the macaroons were probably the best I've had so far (though I have to say I've only tried 3 or 4 stores). Yummy! read more

I'll admit that I got suckered into Miette because I saw their gingerbread cupcake featured on Food Network's "America's Best" series. With that kind of hype, I knew it was almost impossible for my expectations to have been met. I tried it anyway, and even though it was a delicious cupcake it wasn't even the best product I tried from Miette (let alone the best cupcake in the country). The award for tastiest treat at Miette should go to their mini Scharffen Berger cakes ($6). It's a thick, moist, chocolate cake topped with chocolate ganache. If you love chocolate, you have to get this. As rich and sweet as it was, it still wasn't as sugary sweet or overpowering as one might think. Luckily, when I walked in half an hour before they closed there was one left for me to purchase. There wasn't much else to choose from and based on what the girl at the register said, their location in San Francisco has a much larger selection of items. I did end up getting several other cupcakes and pretty much cleaned them out. Hopefully, the girl in line behind me didn't want anything other than the vanilla or chocolate cupcakes left behind. The chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream I tried was good, as was the carrot cake cupcake. But the vanilla with vanilla buttercream was as dry, bland and tough to swallow as a week-old cupcake. I was very excited for the opening of Miette. However, the prices and cupcake did not live up to the modern cupcake standard of all the cupcake joints popping up these days. The cupcakes are small - smaller than the standard ones that you make at home. The wrapping was disappointing b/c it was thin and cheap. The frosting is soft and not textured enough. I had the carrot cake cupcake ($3.25), took one bite and threw it away. It had major nuts in there, the frosting was watery (no texture) and was not sweet. The calories were not worth it. Next time, I will try the dime-sized macaroons for $1.75 just because I love them. I hope they are not like their cupcakes. read more

I like their baked goods. There are parking. They have happy hours and the workers are always so nice. Their baked goods are pretty simple and reserved. They have a lot of other goods too. I usually come and buy their macaroon. I wish the flavors would change a bit more but some people like to keep it simple. The only thing I don't like too much is that they have a nutty maybe almond grounds in their macaroon shells. I always loved their chocolate cupcake, not too much of a cream fan because it's so rich. Unfortunately though nothing stands out to me that makes me go wow. Gotta say, sweets there are certainly yummy and very cute and pretty. I tried all the macaroons and a chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream frosting. The macaroons. Yeah, they were delicious. Perfectly yummy and chewy; they were fresh and always are at Miette. You can always expect a nice, soft, chewy macaroon there. But that goes for a lot of other fantastic patisseries too---yummy but not particularly special. Rose-geranium is a really nice flavor though. Cupcakes are nice and moist. Loved that. Also something special: I noticed Miette uses always high quality chocolate in their desserts. They sell Rococo chocolate (that's a very good and high quality chocolate made by chocolatier Chantal Coady) and they use Sharffenberger chocolate in their cakes (he is a VERY dedicated chocolatier along with his partner Robert Steinberg who makes excellent chocolate in their factor based in local Berkeley.) All in all Miette is good, yummy, and super cute. Good for your instagram too, lol. But it's not extraordinary, in ma own biased opinion. read more

It was ok. Not bad but not great. Purchased 6 macarons and a vanilla buttercream cupcake. The macarons were very soft and fluffy which I enjoyed I don't like hard macarons but the flavors weren't what I was expecting . The chocolate tasted like it had mint which I hate mint, the rose tasted like perfume literally it was so strong. Now the caramel was good but not what I was expecting. Pistachio was very light in flavor couldn't really capture the nut taste. Overall the sweets were average but there's definitely much better out there. read more

I was coming here every afternoon when they had the macaron happy hour because each cookie was only $1, but now that they are back to the regular price of $1.75, it's hard to justify having one every day. But I still love coming here to browse at all of the beautiful treats because they really take you away from the daily grind. The place is huge and had some goodies but didn't have much cakes/tarts like the other store. Clearly this is for the faint of heart who find themselves succumbed but weakness when things are perfectly placed and color coordinated and it reminds you of the pantry you have always dreamed of. Is it overpriced, yes. Will I continue to go back, yes. And Yes I occasionally just like cute stuff and disregard the fact that the quality and taste of items is not necessary associated with the little pink bow. If you're looking for the rainbow colored, plethora of flavors macarons displayed behind a glass divider similar to Bottega Louie, you will be disappointed. I work in Jack London, and want to love Miette, but due to bad employee attitudes, and often weird 30 minute closing, I find it unreliable to make the 15 minute walk for cupcake delight. Today at 3:00 pm I walked to Miette to buy a cupcake for photos with my toyline. The sign "We will be back in 30 minutes for a food break" was up. I walked around on my break for 30 minutes watching the girl on break sit on the counter in view of customers playing on her phone. 35 minutes later I gave up and headed back to work... I understand people need lunches, and breaks, but I worked alone at a coffee shop for 5 years and I just took my break in between customers.. Not to mention I went out of customer sight. The French know what they are talking about when they coin phrases. Par example, the French equivalent of 'windowshopping' is 'lèche-vitrines', which literally means 'window licking.' I've been known to lèche-vitrines when I pass by bakeries with macarons, and Miette is no exception. While I feel odd about giving bakeries a free window cleaning, I would be interested in a trade of some sorts, possibly to be paid in macarons for my amazing services. Miette's window display has made me do several pro bono clean-ups. I'm always drawn in by their cutesy pink decor, precious confections, and promise of sugar highs to come. While I wouldn't lick the floor for their macarons (Chantal Guillon Macarons in SF holds the dubious honor of being my premier floor licking spot), I do like them beaucoup and think you would too. The flavors are always traditional, like rose geranium, hazelnut, and pistachio. There's something a little off about the texture-somewhat too gritty and granular, but flavor wise they will have you licking each crumb and perhaps the surface they are served on. So Miette has me giving free window shines and shelling out $1.75 per macaron. I just can't win this game. Very nice people who work here-never batting an eyelash over my fawning and display case affections, maybe because I'm such a skilled glass cleaner, but they do seem genuinely sweet. I wanted to buy macarons for my sister on our way back home so we made a detour stop here because this was the nearest macaron shop from the freeway. There was a sign saying they were closed for 30minutes. We noticed a girl eating her lunch so walked around and waited. We understand that people need to take their lunches but we were definitely waiting for more than 30minutes. When we walked in, the girl at the counter just stood there without a smile, no greeting, complete silence. Her lack of expression made the whole place feel unwelcoming. I felt weird looking at their minuscule selection. After 5 minutes, I changed my mind about spending my money here so my boyfriend and I left. Their macaron selection was sad and so was their cupcake display; practically empty. I'm guessing it was a slow day or they were nearing the end of their shift. "Meh-ette." I walked in here today after my appt and gallivanting around before I hitched back home. I've been tantalized to try this place as of recent and made it a go to for when I was back in Oakland. Today comes, I decided to get me and my cap some sweet treats before or after din tonight to take home. I got the "Italian merengue" cupcake which is completely laughable because when you actually taste it, it tastes like Jet puff marshmallow frosting with a Boston baked bean at the top. Yes. I could've made this at home, basically. The second star is for the cute little packaging they give you because they withstood my journey back home but let me tell you about the taste: RICH but like "you could do it brucey" (Matilda reference, I'm sorry) type of rich. Like overly indulgent blehhhhhhhhhh I couldn't even finish my cupcake, it was overly moist to the point where I felt pathetic eating it. And by no means do I feel this way ever because I have sweet teeth so let me tell you desserts never are too much. This is an exception now. This is an excellent french style sweet shop/bakery tucked away in a corner of jack london square. The cupcakes and macoroons are awesome but they truly excel with their cookies, torte and cakes. Expensive? Sure, but man it's good. They do do some online order/pickup options, but it's best to drop by. They are open till 5:30 pm, but be warned the staffing is minimal starting in the afternoon. The counter help will close for well just about any reason. Bathroom, smoke break, phone break etc. thus making it challenging to drop in for a purchase in the late afternoon. read more

Had the Old fashioned cupcake with meringue frosting... different but so very tasty. I love the scent of roses but wasn't sure about a rose and geranium macaroon. It was delicious! Glad it was not brightly colored like some other places make theirs. Lemon and Hazelnut Shortbreads are so tasty. Brownie with walnuts and Pecan Tart were superb. At least I heard they were. My husband ate them both in rapid succession that I barely even saw what confections he was shoving down his gullet. He isn't a fan of sweets so I know these treats must have been amazing. I expected an actual bakery but instead was greeted by 5 different types of cupcakes, two cakes, some macaroons in jars, and a few packaged cookies. Thats it. Not much else to choose from.
