I've had two favorite bike shops over the past decade, and both have shuttered their doors. Midwest Cyclery is next in line to be my go-to based on it's convenient midtown location. I went in specifically looking for a U-lock for my commuter bike, and they had lots of options all priced as good as you'd find online. The staff was helpful but not intrusive as I wandered around trying to get my bearings. One reason I'm not quite at five stars is that it's still so new to me; I haven't had them work on any of my bikes, bought any big ticket items, etc. I lightly perused the bike selection which is pretty good, at least for right now in these weird supply-chain times. There's a big parking lot out front (rare for midtown) and it's easy to get to from the Plaza/Brookside/Westport. Recommend giving them a go and looking forward to updating this down the road after a few more visits! read more

Nutshell version -- EBIKES ARE GAME CHANGERS. SO FUN! Buying my ebike from Midwest Cyclery has been the best sales/service experience I've had for a very long time. Sometimes you don't know how solid a business is until you see how they handle problems. My bike, scheduled to be delivered in July, FINALLY made it to their shop on August 20th. The port delays and delays within the transportation chain are just part of life these days. Everyone has experienced them. But I was not left hanging without communication. Christina (small business owner, on duty 24/7) kept me informed. Around the 1st of August, when the bike was officially "late" Christina was on her suppliers & transportation chain like ugly on ape. She did a great job of keeping me informed. She knew I was anxious I was to get my Gazelle and apologized several time for the delay even though it was not her fault and completely outside of her control. It finally arrived. When I got to the shop, it was just assembled and finishing charging. She fitted my bike to me and went through all the tips about "how" to position myself when I ride, what to pay attention to, etc. I learned stuff from her it would've taken me YEARS to learn on my own. As I said in my first review, she grew up in this shop and is incredibly knowledgeable. We rode our bikes that night- awesome. The next morning, the unthinkable happened.... when we were at home attaching the Aussie's trailer to my PC's bike, something broke. ON OUR VERY FIRST MORNING to go riding. With a less than steller bike shop, this could have made for a very disappointing problem. I messaged Christiana & called the shop - Bob said to bring in it. Both assured us they could fix it. On a Saturday morning, both Christiana, Bob & one of their awesome employees put the bike on a lift and kept trying different parts to work with our trailer bracket until they got a fit. Getting his XL bike on the Thule bike rack presented challenges with a water bottle holder he'd just put on too. Bob was right there and helped us figure it out. We were in and out of the shop READY TO RIDE that morning. Here's there thing.... I looked at almost every bike shop in the KC/Overland Park area. I spent A LOT of time shopping, test riding, researching & asking questions about ebikes. These ebikes are very popular and there are A LOT of novice sales people out there giving out wrong information. I'm not dropping this kind of money without due diligence. Midwest Cyclery is a first rate shop. They know a lot of their customer's by name. I heard potential customers say another customer referred them. Because I'm a former small business owner, I try to always include other locally owned small businesses when I'm looking to buy something important. I feel I got lucky when I found Midwest Cyclery. I know I could have spent less or shopped closer to where I live. But they wouldn't have had the same quality of ebike as my Gazelle or been able to give me the expert help I needed. I wanted an ebike I could and would enjoy for several years. I NEEDED a place to answer all my questions as a complete novice without making me feel stupid or embarrassed and fix something when I mess up. Someplace that encourages customers to bring their bikes back periodically within the first year just so they can make sure their customer is satisfied and the bike is operating perfectly. In summary - that is Midwest Cyclery. They have forged excellent relationships with their customers AND suppliers. There were more ebikes here to choose from than any other shop around. They get bikes when the others can't. They are a solid, reputable and well-respected bike shop for those who really know about bikes and are serious about riding. And, for people like me. It is my pleasure to recommend them to others and frankly, what YELP is all about to me. Small businesses don't have huge advertising budgets so if I can share my great experience with other YELPERS, it's my pleasure to do so. If you don't know about Ebikes, check them out! They are a great way to start exercising. They make pedaling up hills possible without hating every minute of it. One can ride several miles. Yes, you still have to pedal but you can determine how much and when you need assistance. They make you feel like a kid again! read more

Bike tech greeted me when I came in very promptly. Gave him a brief synopsis and he had me rolling in 10 minutes. Too many fun features around the city and had abused my bike a little, besides the sprinkler system at the art museum bike lockup spraying my bike down along with my chain grease. Do not use this shop! My bike returned in worse shape then when I dropped it off and I was left this harassing voice mail when I called asking for a refund on their service (my fork came back broken and the chain still broken). I didn't want to return the bike for them to service it due to the misrepair it was returned in. Do not use this shop. read more

They were honestly super rude which is fine, if they also were good at the work they do. Drove my trek hifi pro bike 30 minutes in there to get the tires swapped from road to off-road tires (just to have the confidence of having it professionally done) and in changing them out, they introduced a leak into the valve stem that i now have to fix. This place is pretty fantastic! Upon walking In I was greeted by bicycle enthusiasts, not salesmen. They helped answers all my questions and then some. At no time was I persuaded towards one bike or another or anything else. They just simply gave me some extra knowledge and help me figure out what could work for me. Their bikes are rad and they have a excellent variety. They don't make money off the bikes tho, I purchased my bike for exactly what they got it for(not kidding, receipt to prove it) How sick is that. Their best quality tho, is their mechanics. These guys are seriously proficient at what they do. I bring my bike to them and they let watch and learn as they go. I bought my and my daughter's bikes here. The first time I came in, I just asked a bunch of questions, looked at all the bikes, and tested out a couple of the bikes I was interested in. They had me ride the bikes around the store to see which one felt the best. I was not ready to make a purchase right then, I came back a week later with my daughter and ended up buying her a bike also (never take a kid into a bike store). So first of all I looked over all of the reviews on this place before I went and I read about some dishonesty. I took my 4300 trek in to have a tune up and I was quoted 75$ dollars up front for a full tune up. FULL TUNE UP!!!! Not partial. I turned my bike in at 4 pm on the 21st and the tech said that he would have it done by 5 pm the next day at the latest and said he would call when it was done. I called back on the 22nd at 3 pm to check on the status and they said that It was just getting put into the racks to be worked on. no big deal other than that to me does not give you enough time to do a thorough job which I'm paying for. They said they would call me when it was done. NO CALL RECEIVED!!! I Had to call them back like a job interview to figure out what the status was because they were about to close. They told me they got swamped and would just have it done tomorrow. So they gave me a call on the 23rd to let me know it was done I asked the guy over the phone how much it would be he said 35$ I said ok ill be by at 3 to get it. I arrived at the store to pick the bike up with the FULL tune up done on it and the guy said that'll be 75$ which I was told 35 over the phone. I told him guy told me it was 35$ so I will pay 35$. The tech took the ticket walked over talked to someone and said you must have misheard. Issue number 3 at this point. I then asked him why I was told 35$ and he said you must have misheard because we charge 75$ for a FULL TUNE UP.. My bike came back with 4 YES I REPEAT 4 items checked off. Adjust hand brakes, Adjust derail, Adjust head, and oh yeah lube the chain. The tech I talked to when I brought it in said he would also adjust the front end alignment which is STILL OFF. NEEDLESS TO SAY I WILL NEVER BE GOING BACK AND I CAUTION ANYONE SEEKING REPAIRS OF TUNEUPS to seek more knowledgeable trust worthy people who will not lie to you and will do the job they were paid to do. Thank you guys for making it easy for me to get my repairs somewhere else and all of my biking needs met in better hands. Unless you spend money on their supplies and bikes they will do you wrong please save your money and drive somewhere else the time and gas is worth it and you be thanking yourself later. read more
