I have been to every single nail salon in midtown and had the great luck to finally find Lily about 3 years ago. I haven't stepped foot in another nail salon since! Lily's work is absolutely amazing. I always have her do a pink and white overlay on my (naturally hard) nails and I am always thrilled. She doesn't apply the acrylic in a big thick ugly mess - nice and thin, her edge is never left and the nails never fall off - ever. And her fills - they are always perfectly blended with no ugly fill line. On top of her wonderful work, she is ALWAYS more than accommodating for appointment times and dates, PLEASE keep in mind you do need an appointment. She's very busy, but definitely worth any wait you might have and I won't go anywhere else, ever. Lily takes very good care of you, and works fast. She not only does an amazing job but is very funny and sweet to chat with. She is currently only taking sessions by appointments during the pandemic, but it's very nice to have the whole salon to yourself. Considering how busy J Street is her space is clean, quiet and relaxing. She has been doing nails for over 30 years, been in that space for about 20 years. Make sure to call ahead cause she is fairly regularly booked, but is always willing to take on new clients or do quick fixes. I got a gel mani & pedi yesterday and they are holding up quite nicely. WONDERFUL experience! My boyfriend called them last minute at 4:45pm on Sunday to make an appointment but they planned on closing at 5pm. They accepted my appointment anyways and waited for me to arrive at 5pm! 2 ladies immediately welcomed me and both gave me an excellent gel manicure and pedicure. Update next day I needed to update my review. So today I woke up and my eyes were very itchy and irritated. I assume I had a reaction to the glue which isn't the shops fault....however the shop is closed today and these really were starting to bother my eyes. After going to the beauty supply store and getting remover we (my daughter and i) started the task to remove them. We realized that she used 13 little lash pods on each eye. She glued them to my actual lashes. They weren't naturally nestled in the lashes. Literally every pod was glued not only to the bas of the lash but to all the lashes each pod covered. So even as these grew out they would have been adhered to my lashes. It took us hours and hours, lots of burning eyes, and broken natural lashes to get them off. I still have glue in my lashes but my eyes hurt so bad I said screw it. I now have all these weak baby lashes and have to figure out how to not look weird. Honestly I'm pissed but I should have really listened to the reviews.....please please don't go here Today I bought a Groupon for this place for eyelashes. They got me right in and I also got my brows waxed. The Groupon is for lashes but they are small little groups of lashes so not individual however they do have those as an option but not with the groupon. Lilly was great. She showed me pictures and helped me pick a style I was looking for. I went with medium. It took about an hour and I am happy. She took her time and I never felt rushed. She also waxed my eyebrows. I have been growing them in for several months so they needed shaping. I am very happy with both items. The lashes are going to take a little getting used to but I have had a few people tell me they look good already. Also she gave mee clear instructions on how to care for them to ensure they last. As far as the place, it is small. There are 4 pedicure chairs, 2 nail stations and a small room for the waxing and lashes. I felt the place was clean. It smelled cleaned and I used the bathroom and it was clean too. I don't know why all the negative reviews....it was a cvool place and she was very good about makingg sure I was happy. HOW DO I GIVE NEGATIVE STARS?! At first I gave two because Lily was nice BUT it's been a week and my lashes have came off. NOT only that but when it came if from washing my face about FIFTEEN!!! FREAKING 1...5...15 of my lashes came off with it. When I looked at the lashes I realized how THICK the lashes were.... the lashes she used are NOT meant for long lasting glue. Sac City Nails is on 65th Expressway and Stockton Blvd. Inconvenient if you live and work in midtown/downtown, and they aren't open on Sundays. So, I went to Midtown Nails on Sunday. The woman who helped me was friendly, if quiet, did a very thorough job on my eyebrows - less so on the upper lip (with all the personal information about my beauty and hygiene rituals I put on this site, I'm glad I'm not looking to date any Yelpers). It was $19 for both. Tina at Sac City Nails will do both for $10, and most other South Sac places will do so for $14. Anyway, she took her time, asked me how I liked my brows shaped, and was very hygienic. The consensus I have taken from the Yelp reviews I just read is the following: Midtown nails is small, Midtown nails is dirty, Midtown nails is sloppy. Now, I have to say that the place is not flashy by any means but I did not feel like it was dirty. It IS very small as well (2 pedi spa chairs and 3 or 4 manicure stations), but the day I came in (a Saturday around 1 - Primetime) they were very slow. Actually, they were not slow - they were dead. I was the only person there. To me, this factor completely negates the criticism that the shack is small. The gal who did my nails was quick and efficient. The gal who did my toes messed up the ole big toe a little bit, but cleaned it and started over after seeing her mistake without me asking. (Sidenote: When you get your mani and pedi at the same time do you ever feel gluttonous and kinda bad like you are the freaking Queen of Sheba?) Anyways, this place was OK and would probably get 3 stars if it weren't for the fact they turned me on to GEL NAIL POLISH! Apparently I am late to the game on this one. For those of you who already knew about this: F you for holding out on me! Why didn't I know about this??? For those of you who are late to the game as well, let me tell you about Gel Nail Polish. Gel Nail Polish is a hybrid between a normal, natural nail polish with an acrylic (leaning heavily on the more natural side). The polish is applied 3-4 times, and after each coat you dry your nails under a UV light for 60 seconds. The polish is completely dry after that. For me, this is great because I am typically VERY impatient with my polish drying and with the Gel it dries so fast that you can basically go immediately back to your normal life of searching through purses, opening car doors, manhandling key rings, etc. without messing your freshly painted nails up. The second benefit of the Gel Nail Polish is that it lasts for 2 weeks. It doesn't chip. It looks like a woman's nails should look. When I get a manicure or paint my own nails, I always end up walking around for 3-10 days with chipped little girl nails. No bueno. I hate fake nails. My main reason is that they feel dirty and are not mine. The gel nail polish solves that problem. The other reason I hate the fake nails is because they destroy your natural nail, making it thin and unhealthy. I wish I could say the gel nails resolve this issue as well but they don't. The polish requires them to use that electric sander to remove it. The damage is not AS bad as the fake nails, and the process not nearly as painful as removing those honking acrylic things, but it still sucks. All in all, I will be getting this again soon. $30 for the gel manicure but it lasts 2 weeks, so take that into consideration. read more

I went to Midtown Nails on a coworker's suggestion because they're pretty fast, cheap and across the street from work. Although its not fancy at all, what so ever, I feel that the work has been fairly good. I had never had any problems going there other than forgetting cash every now and then. Their work lasts quite sometime too which is good because I am a pretty aggressive typer so I usually don't get my nails done until some special occasion. They have always been very thorough and ask if I am happy with the work. I once tried putting on my flip flops and messed up my big toe, they promptly fixed it and made sure it was really dry before I left. Get the spa pedi because if you don't ask for that, you just get an old fashion tub of water for your feet. I usually don't get the paraffin dip but it is nice. If you're into nice, fancy salons then don't bother. But if you need a quick manicure or pedi, you'll be okay. read more

THIS REVIEW IS FOR EYEBROW WAX ONLY. I was in downtown and really needed my eyebrows waxed. So, (trying to save money) I looked on Groupon for a deal. Saw this deal at Midtown Nails for $6 for an eyebrow wax which is originally $12, what a steal! They also had a deal of 3 eyebrow waxes for $18. After looking at the reviews, I decided to stick for one eyebrow wax and give this place a try! I come in and see two women working on one customer. They tell me it will be an 8-minute wait. (I guess one of them was doing the manicure and the other one was doing the pedicure?) I wait but she helped me sooner than expected which was good. As she was putting the wax on me, she explains how the wax dries and it just peels off and that's why it's $12, pretty expensive stuff. Then she takes it off, cuts a little of my hair and tweezes a little bit of the leftover hair. She gives me the mirror, (I'm pretty excited to see the results) to find myself so disappointed. No shape and a lot of hair still left. She did get a lot of excess hair off but not to the point where my eyebrows have any shape. She waxes it again, and still a lot of hair. She tells me it's baby hair... but isn't the wax supposed to take MOST of it off? I've been getting my eyebrows waxed since I was 17. I've been to places where my eyebrows were not done well but not to the point where I had to repeatedly say "there is still a lot of hair" I decided to tell her I will pluck it out myself at home because I felt she didn't really know how to shape eyebrows. How many times have I gone into a nail salon and been disappointed with the results as I walk out the door? Well, I'm not sure, but you can add one more to the list! I went with a friend, and she received an excellent manicure, so I will be going to the woman who did her nails if I go back. I, on the other hand, had a woman I think was named "Linda". She was nice enough, and I hate to give a bad review because of this fact, but I just have to. She completely forgot to file my left hand, and when I realized she was going to start painting my nails, I had to ask her to go back and do that. I also dont feel my nails looked as good as they could have. The shop was very small, with only 3 women working in there, so I had to wait over 35 minutes. If you make an appt, there is no waiting however. You cant beat the price at $12.00 plus $5.00 for the parafin wax, which I highly recommend! I did enjoy the pampering, but not the overall results. I finally found a nail place where they don't require my firstborn for a pedicure, no contraction (yet) of any crazy toenail fungus, and I don't get the funny feeling that they are talking behind my back, er front, in Vietamese while observing my callused left toe or my overgrown cuticles. I had a great experience here on Saturday. "Kim" took at least 45 minutes to painstakingly make my manicure happen and I left with utmost satisfaction and only $12 poorer. I'm into that! You know things are good when people keep streaming in for their weekly fix from the nail goddesses, but the wait isn't that long and the service is attentive. This would get zero stars if possible. Other than it's close proximity to my workplace and the speed with which my manicure was done, there are no redeeming qualities to this place. Go to Ambrosia Nails on Florin...same prices, better quality work. I got a french manicure on my regular nails, nothing fancy. In fact, that's what I came in with. You would think they'd look at it and try to use that to guage how I like it done. But no. Reasons for ZERO stars: 1) It was so small and dirty in there, I was seriously afraid that I was going to contract some sort of disease 2) The woman did not bother to thoroughly take off all my nail polish. She then proceeded to use the nail file ON my nail (I know what the buffing side looks like, she wasn't using it) to take off the spots she hadn't gotten. 3) She was none too gentle about shoving my cuticles down. 4) She did the white tips so thick that I look like a cheap hooker 5) Some of the whites are curved, some are not 6) I could (and HAVE) done a better job of a french manicure on my own 7) There are no drying machines, only little fans which they only turn on at the very end of your manicure when you are trying to dry through 5 layers of polish by that point--all other places that use fans have you use it in between each coat. So, result is now I have cheap hooker nails that I will probably take off myself in two days. I will never go back here again. If you want these prices, go to Ambrosia Nails on Florin in the Nugget Market strip mall complex. They charge you the exact same thing and every time I go there, regardless of who I get, I at least don't leave so upset that I want to cry that I just basically THREW AWAY $15. ***UPDATE*** Despite my harsh review and still not being super excited about how my nails look, the polish has lasted almost a week and a half at this point with very minimal chipping despite washing dishes, hot showers, washing the car by hand, etc. SO, for that, I'm upping my score to two stars. read more

Love my lashes! I'm surprised by some of the reviews. I've gotten the Groupon "flare" lashes AND mink lashes here before. This is my lash spot - you can't beat the price and quality. The Groupon lashes were maybe $35??? I can see people are complaining about quality because flare lashes are three lashes connected at one end, so yes if you don't take care of them three fall off at a time. However, I had no issues with mine and they have lasted a long time (probably longer than individual). Also, I've never had issues with them falling off earlier than the normal falling off process (unless I did not take care of them because I was swimming in the ocean or pool). The review with the clump lashes and the tweezers pic. This doesn't make sense to me. If you have real lashes stuck aka still glued to the fake eyelashes. It doesn't have anything to do with the glue - it is most likely your normal shedding process. Anyway, Flare is the cheapest and provide more curl and the Mink are more expensive but more natural looking which are my favorite! I've also gotten a gel and pedi here several times with no issues, but not always my go to spot because parking isn't the easiest. Speaking of parking, some guy got mad about his meter situation and asked the Midtown ladies for a quarter for the meter. They were sorry, but they didn't have any quarters to help him pay. They struggled to find some in their own purses - he stormed out. The pedicure lady found one in her purse and tried running after him. He saw her and he drove away still. What a terrible attitude. 1) It's Midtown - parking is usually metered unless you park further away from the main going out area... 2) Bring your own quarters if the card slot doesn't work in the machine - he expected these ladies to pay or else they would be quote "losing money" when really they would if they could they just didn't have any quarters 3) There is also the parking app you can download and use if you don't have quarters or the credit card machine isn't working AND it connects to your PayPal!!! No excuse for not having money for parking and expecting these ladies to pay for you in which they genuinely tried to remediate the situation. Overall, they are really sweet ladies (not the best English) and a really good price for being in the middle of Midtown - it bummed me out seeing the terrible reviews people have left here. read more

I've only had a manicure five times in my life, and a pedicure twice. Two manis and one pedi have been at Midtown, only because they're within walking distance and I really needed to have color on my nails for some functions I forget. Midtown Nails is a reminder to myself why I don't need to get my nails done by a stranger. Yes, it's a no-nonsense place (I like no-nonsense), but it feels dirty, unhygienic, and unpleasant. To me, it feels like a business run out of someone's living room in Asia. If you've ever visited one of those home-run businesses (ie. convenience store or hair washing place, you'll understand what I mean). I adore and support those home-run businesses in Asia because they're friendly and you feel like you're a local. But this is USA, nail salons shouldn't look and feel like a business run from your living room. (I apologize if the above sounds bigoted, I don't mean it in that way. Shes a wonderful person and nice buuut I'm not coming back . She didnt know how to work her phone and kept asking help(several times) which I did help. Then she said she was going to do the spa special which is $27 so I agreed it comes with cut clean cuticle care pumice scrub, some other scrub mint mask and hot oil treatment! She did not give me the hot oil treatment she charged me $37 and then asked if she could keep the extra $10 I said no. she asked me " why ?!" I got a gel manicure for my engagement photos and was so impressed! I am known for messing up EVERY manicure I get so am always really nervous getting my nails done before special occasions. However, this one has held up great! Not only do my nails look great in person and in close ups in our pictures but my nails are still going strong after two weeks. In that two weeks, I went on a backpacking trip, washed dishes, gardened, etc. and have only had minor chips that are barely noticeable (to be expected with using my hands that much)! read more

Went here to treat myself for my birthday. Initially, I came in for a spa pedicure because my feet are so rough, it sounds like static every time I take my socks off. Let's begin: -They were quick and attentive. -They didn't talk, which is fantastic, because I hate chicken-head chatter. -There is a colored tip and right under that is my natural nail line, then the pink. Very tacky. -They asked me to wash my hands in the bathroom without giving me paper sandals after I asked 9 times, during my pedi, after my pedi, and just before leaving the shop. -I knew that they were going to charge me for the flowers but I hoped that they would hook me up being that it was my birthday. -My nails are uneven. -They pretty much stopped paying attention to me as soon as a new customer walked in. -I paid $27 for the spa pedicure and $25 for acrylic set. The spa is normally $22, but if you get a flower for your birthday, they charge you $5. I went here because I don't have a car. I will take light rail to a different, better location that will hopefully be cheaper & get rid of my rough ass heels. I'm a believer in "you get what you pay for" but in this case, I was sold short. When I got there I found out the lashes comes in three pieces of lashes each and I told the lady I don't want that kind and asked if I can use my $39 credit towards something else and she said no. So she offered to put a different lashes with only two lashes per piece on me for additional $15. I agreed and gave her $15. I didn't realized she tricked me until two pieces of my lashes fell off tonight that she was putting the three pieces of lashes on me instead of the two pieces that I paid additional $15 for. sooooo disappointed ... its close to my house. The ladies there are so nice but I got a full set gels... She didn't know what I lent when I said 'pink and white'... I've been getting my nails done for a long time now. This was actually the worst set I've ever got. My fingers around my nails are red and inflamed, my nails look horrible, they can't do nail art, not even just easy flowers. She painted a lightly colored top coat on before putting the UV activated gel on. It just looks so bad. I wouldn't have done this review, but I paid $50 for bleeding fingers and an embarrassing nail job. The ladies are just so sweet too.
