We just stayed at a vacation rental on Rodanthe called Eers in the sand. It was the dirtiest rental home I have ever visited despite having a cleaning fee. One of the blankets on the bunks had dried up food crusted between the folds that we discovered when we opened it up. There was mildew/mold around the light fixtures in the ceiling and light switches. The door frames had visible water damage and mildew. The base boards were discusting, multiple dirty handprints on the walls and missing items from the pictures online. Also be prepared to bring literally everthing with you. There was not even a single roll of toilet paper. Better yet just skip this and stay home because I promise your house is better! I will NEVER rent from this company again. The hot tub was broken when we arrived...I could write a book on how disappointing this rental was. read more

We stayed in a Midgett Realty rental house once before and were quite happy with our entire experience. This time was the worst experience. There were 11 people going on our vacation and we all looked at many different homes. We decided on Sea Nanigans, which turned out to be a huge mistake! We all looked at the amenities and it said the linens were "gold-all seasons". This was an important factor due to the number of people that we were bringing. We did not have room to bring sheets, towels, etc. We arrived at the rental after being on the road for 8 hours only to find there were NO linens and Avon is an hour away from any stores that would have such items' (a 2 hour round trip) so everyone had to sleep on the bedspreads with nothing to cover with and froze. It was November. Our closet door fell off when we tried to put our things in it. Another closet door handle fell off, One of the bathrooms had a drawer front hanging off the vanity. The tub in one of the bathrooms wouldn't drain well so you were standing in dirty water all the time you were showering. Many of the lightbulbs were either burned out or completely missing. There were huge roaches....yes ROACHES in the bottom floor. One of them ran across my grandsons foot. The biggest and most DANGEROUS issue was when our dog and youngest grandson almost fell through the MISSING VERTICAL RAILING on the second floor deck! There were 2 completely missing and several loose ones that just pushed out if bumped or leaned on. The missing boards were floating in the pool which had nasty water and one board was lying on the patio around the pool. We went out on this deck at night when we first arrived and had no idea they were missing until morning! It was very obvious these rails didn't fall off just before we got there. They rented this house out knowing there were dangerous conditions. When I called to speak with someone the next day, nobody was answering except for maintenance and they were quite cheerful and said they would come right away to fix things. I told them we had plans and nobody wanted to stay at the house so they could come and fix things and take up our vacation time. They said they could do it while we were gone and I told them absolutely not! We didn't know anything about them and weren't going to have them there with us not there. I let them come and fix the dangerous railing the next day but told them they could fix the other stuff once our time was up. I asked to speak with a manager but was told the property manager wouldn't be in until Thursday so I called then only to be sent to his voicemail which said he wouldn't be in until Saturday so I called the office back and they put me through to someone else. I told him all the issues and he couldn't have cared less. I told him they owed us a refund for all the money we had to spend on bedding and towels and his response was they maybe changed it to limited seasons but he would check and get back to me but of course he never did. This house shouldn't have been rented out in the condition it was in. They couldn't care less about our stay or our safety. Never again will we use Midgett Realty. Not much of a vacation when you are stressed about the expensive house you have rented that turned out to be crap. read more

We rented a home in Avon, with Midgett Realty. The transaction was seamless. They were even able to accommodate us with a slightly earlier check in time. This was a great help to us. It may seem like a small gesture but it was not required and we greatly appreciated it. The house was a wonderful place to stay with all the amenities you would need and more. The office staff must work on commission because they are very aggressive in putting pressure on you to book way ahead for fear you might not get a beach rental house. I called six months ahead of my planned trip to get some particulars on how renting a house from them works. The girl that took my call strongly advised me to book something immediately because "they are going fast." I found that hard to believe as we go into a recession and people just don't have money to spend like they did in 2021 or 2022. I didn't book anything and turns out that she was talking BS just to get another house rented. I found a suitable house to rent two weeks before my trip at way less than the prices she had quotes six months ago. I'm talking about a 30% reduction! I see that Midgett's rental prices have dropped also. So beware of their sales pitch and do your homework, unless you like paying higher outdated rates. read more

We have used Midgett Realty (as well as other companies) and they are a great company to work with. They do try to work with people take care of issues promptly. They are one of the better rental agencies on the island. I also see that many people are upset that they have lost money when traveling due to weather related issues. We always purchase insurance, especially when traveling to OBX in late summer. It's a small percentage of the cost but it has always protected us for refunds when we have been evacuated. This is an option that you are given during checkout. (As we have been evacuated 3 times over the years, we have learned our lesson). read more

We have used Midgett 5 times over 25 years and always had a pleasant experience until we rented their property "Beach Stars" in May 2018. Upon arrival the downstairs AC unit wasn't working and the refrigerator smelled so strongly of dead fish that we had to seal any item we didn't want to taste like dead fish in plastic bags. In addition the drain below the sink leaked water on the floor. I understand that things break without notice and that is part of renting a beach house. But it was very disappointing to find three significant problems, easily identified during weekly inspection, the minute you walk in your house. read more

I've used Midgett Realty once, years ago. We had no issues with them and the house was clean. I am just rating this because I saw what Gina B wrote which makes me FURIOUS. Your vacation is an investment that you protect with INSURANCE. Period. Midgett Realty sells it. You can buy it from their broker or you can buy it from the company of your choosing. It costs pennies in comparison to the cost of a vacation rental. The home owner still has a mortgage to pay whether the road to HIS INVESTMENT is accessible or not. His insurance does cover YOUR vacation, just the loss of his property. If his property was not damaged, it's not like the insurance company is giving him a dime, whether there is a road or not. He SHOULD keep your money. You signed a contract saying that you were willing to lose your money if there was a hurricane or you had a personal emergency and couldn't make it. You gambled and lost and now you have sour grapes. read more

BEWARE of the BAIT AND SWITCH. We reserved a home on Midgettrealty.com in August 2021 for a stay in August 2022. In October 2021, we got a note that the price had increased. In November 2021, we got a note that cabana service (which included a 10x10 shelter and 6 chairs), was no longer available. I don't know how this company can get away with raising prices and reducing advertised amenities. We've been renting houses in the OBX for 20 years. We are in our $3400/week beach house now. For the money, I'd appreciate a little more concern for our experience. The furniture appears to have been found on the curb. It's dingy and worn, to the point that one sits with reservations about how much scum is accumulated. There are places where the bottom feels busted out, where I, a 150 lb woman, feel like I'm falling through. Our mattresses and pillows are hard and lumpy, undoubtedly as old as the other furniture. While the house is nice, the furnishings could be described as "early ghetto." We arrived at the time allowed for moving in; 6:00 p.m. A call to the office to get keys went to an off-hours message. If you listen for what seems like a very long time, you get an "emergency" number. I called that to get help. Turns out, there were still folks in the office, they just don't answer after 5:30. But you can't move in until 6:00. They're not answering the phone at move-in time. If you need directions or want to talk to someone, call before 5:30, and ask if they will be in the office when you arrive. There are absolutely no amenities. You must rent your sheets (think starched cardboard) and towels for an additional cost. The ice-maker does not work. A door is missing off a cabinet, a chip-board shelf is expanding from water exposure, the bottom of a cabinet door is falling out, lampshades don't fit and match, and we have light fixtures from the '70s. "Ghetto" would apply to this decor. There are no beach chairs, nothing to enhance the beach experience. No beach towels, of course. There are a number of cassette videos, but no player. There is a DVD player, but no DVDs. Lamps with 3-way capacity have 1-way bulbs. The entire experience screams "stingy" of the management and owners. As for cleanliness, it is relatively clean. The shower curtain in the master bath is moldy and pink with mildew on the bottom several inches. There was a pan in the cabinet that was still dirty, really dirty, from a previous renter. We washed that. The contract states that renters are responsible for vacuuming and cleaning. This seems inappropriate to me, but as I've stated above, I've experienced better. We have rented from Midgett before, 10 years ago, and are disappointed in our return. What happened? Is greed at work here? Or does it really cost that much to shampoo a sofa now and then, repair the cabinets and ice maker, and make the beds up with nice linens for the customers? How about light bulbs? can they afford light bulbs? read more

Checking in to our rental cottage (Ocean's Edge) was the only pleasant experience renting from Midgett Realty. On check-in day, May 30, 2020 we discovered that the lift did not work. I called the maintenance dept and they informed me they were aware of the problem and that a work order had been sent to the manufacturer and they should have it repaired with-in a few days. NEVER HAPPENED! Once inside I discovered the pipes underneath the kitchen sink were leaking and a large bowl full of water was catching the water. I called maintenance again. A repair person came right out. He reduced the problem to a small leak and told me that a plumber would be sent out either the next day (Sunday) or at the latest on Monday. NEVER HAPPENED! We took turns emptying water from under the sink all week. Paint from the ceiling in one of the bathrooms is hanging down. On Monday, June 1 a representative from Midgett came to the house and talked to my Brother in law because of concerns people parking on the grass. We immediately removed the car from the grass and did not park on it again. On Wednesday the same representative from Midgett came back to the cottage and I went out to speak to him. His concerns this time was the amount of vehicles that were parked at the property. My family comes from all around the US to vacation at OBX and we have been for 28 years. I was then threatened that if I had more than 2 persons per room that we would be evicted with-in 4 hours! I had my 86 y/o mother staying in the top bedroom by herself and my 62 y/o brother occupying a room to himself. I assured this person that I was in compliance with the 2 per person per room rule. I was then informed that I would be watched and if there was any evidence that I was not in compliance that I would be evicted! Never in the 28 years of my family vacationing at the Outer Banks of North Carolina have I ever been harassed like this. My advice would be to not rent from Midgett Realty ever. There are much nicer people there to rent from i.e. Hatteras Realty, Surf or Sound. I will NEVER rent from Midgett Realty again! read more

Bed Bugs.....yes the house had beg bugs! Midgett would not move us until their exterminators could confirm the bed bugs. When they did move us it was to another house that was dirty and further away from the beach. Wasted a full day of a short vacation due to their inability to check and clean homes. Not to mention the fear we had on bringing the bed bugs to our own home. DISGUSTING!! Do not rent from these people. read more

We rented a house on Rodanthe from Midgett. Not having been to the area previously, we went with this company based on a recommendation from a friend. The house was dirty upon arrival, one of the heat pumps was not working properly, the pool pump was broken, and the hot tub was in need of servicing and cleaning. They did send a cleaning crew but the heat pump issue was not fixed until the next day and the pool remained unusable. We asked if they had anything else a available and were told, in a very condescending tone, it would be considerably more for a property with a heated pool (we were willing to pay more but they obviously didn't understand that). Overall, the house was fairly nice but our experience with Midgett? Let's just say, there are many other vacation rental agents to choose from and we will not be using Midgett again! At first, they were helpful in communicating with David Wilson the gentleman who thought that it was fair to keep the $1,600 we paid to rent his home, despite the fact that it was empty for that week. There is a reason you work at A to Z Discount Taxes, David, and I assume that's also the reason you had to keep our money, you second-rate underachiever. Last year I stayed at a Midgett Realty house and out of the 7 days we rented, the hottub was functional for 2. Was a tad disappointed with the situation. This year was MUCH WORSE. THE SALTY DOG in FRISCO is TERRIBLE! I don't know if most of the faults should be aimed at the owner or the realty company but I'll list the problems: -Upon arriving the pool is much more underwhelming than the picture lead to believe. We made the best of it, but from day one the pump never worked. There were literally 8 full chlorine tablets just sitting in the bucket. The way of "fixing" it was on Wednesday even they came for maintenence they added chemicals to the pool and fill it to it's very brim. -The hottub had a button for Jets 1 and a button for Jets 2. Until they stopped for maintenance on Wednesday Jets 1 would work when it wanted and as you used the tub it'd lose heat rapidly. -The cable hooked to the television did not work the entire week. -There was a problem with the plumbing from day 1 which showed exactly how bad towards the end of the week whenever raw sewage backed up in the tub in the lower floor and the septic had to be emergency drained (I do give credit with the quickness this issue was resolved). -The fan in the one bathroom did not work and the water pressure in the entire house was terrible. Again, I don't know if this is fully the fault of the owners or realty's but I believe these problems were known of and just looked past. Essentially the point of this review is to tell you, DO NOT STAY AT THE SALTY DOG UNLESS YOU WANNA BECOME ONE. read more

We have been using Midgett Realty to book our outerbanks vacation rentals for nearly a quarter century. They are wonderful and have an excellent selection of properties. To the reviewer who got angry about not being able to access their rental (presumably from Hurricane Irene)--Midgett offers excellent travel insurance through a broker. Last year, our vacation also got cancelled b/c of Hurricane Irene and we got back the FULL amount of our rental, and the insurance cost us $80! If you are considering booking during hurricane season and opt-out of traveler's insurance (which is the default and the cost is based on the price of your rental), it's really your fault if you get screwed out of money NOT the realty company's! read more

Very disappointed in a company that would allow 10 people, 4 of whom are young children, to stay in a rental home for almost 48 hours with no working air conditioning unit. We notified rental office at 10 am on Sunday, did not hear back until we called "emergency" number three separate times, only to be told (at 715 pm) nobody would be coming out today-"maybe sometime tomorrow" we were told. Currently, the temp in the upstairs of our house is 86 degrees. Why would any company expect this to be satisfactory for their customers? We come to the Outer Banks every year, but this is the first time we have used this particular rental company. Believe me when I say it will be the last time. We recently stayed at "Stress Relief" in Avon. As for the house, we only had one problem. The A/C didn't work. Otherwise, the house was great. Our first problem that we encountered is the online reservation double charged us for the house. Took several days to get our money back. They can take it instantly but takes a while to get it back. But it was finally fixed. The whole week we were there, we never had to turn the A/C on. Fantastic weather with the days in the low 70's and the nights in the upper 50's. On our last day, it was much warmer. After spending the day riding to the northern banks, we came back to the house and it was 77 degrees in there. Strike 1. Turned the A/C on and began packing our stuff to leave the next morning. It continued to get hotter in the house. I checked the unit outside and found the fan wasn't running. I called the afterhour's number and promptly got a call back. I was told they would get to it the next day. Had to open the windows and turn on the ceiling fans to get it comfortable in the house. Strike 2. There is a thing called Vacation Attendant that you have to log into every single day to use the internet. It can take up to 10 minutes to get a connection. If you leave the house, and come back, many times you have to log in again. A real pain in the rear. Strike 3. The pool and hot tub was running but there was a bunch of sand in the bottom. Hadn't been cleaned in a while so we didn't use it. Strike 4. We were told by Midgett Realty that we would get a text or email when our house was ready for us to occupy. Off season entry was supposed to be between 3:00 and 5:30 pm. We arrived in Avon at about 3:45 and decided to kill some time until we were notified. We never got any notification from them. I found the office and went by to check and was told the house had been ready for a while. It was now 5:20. I was told by a resident that nobody had been in the house the week before us, so there was no reason that we shouldn't have been notified by 3:00. When we checked out of the house, I went by the office to voice my complaints. I was asked by the receptionist if I would like to talk to the property manager. Why not! I should have been talking to my pup. Jim put the blame somewhere else for everything I brought up. The following are his explanations. The A/C...Did you call the afterhours number. Well it hasn't been that hot and your A/C isn't an emergency. The internet...we have no control over that. It's an outside service. The pool...We have no control over that. It's an outside service. The notification failure...We have had some communications problems with the system. Sometimes things don't communicate the way they should. Did you call us? (Spoken with a sarcastic tone). The receptionist was very apologetic to me but the property manager just put the blame elsewhere and never offered any apologies. Never an offer for a voucher for my next stay. Just his "holier than thou" attitude. I will definitely be finding another realtor to go through the next time we visit the OBX. read more

Midget Realty disappointed us by delivering an expensive property that was not cleaned or well maintained. They did send a person back to vacuum after we called, but we quickly discovered that the house has a lot of accumulated neglect and every surface is sticky and dirty. The ceiling light in the bath was on the counter and a gaping hole remains in the ceiling. When it rains, water drips continuously throught the hole. This premium beach front house has old beat up mismatched furniture, the walls are marked throughout with water damage, the plastic deck chairs are covered in mildew. A large black plunger stands ready by every toilet, for a good reason! The grill was out of propane and the kitchen is a disaster. The drawers are full of crumbs and bugs abound. At a certain price level, a consumer makes assumptions that certain expectations will be met. We did not expect poorly installed linoleum, curling at the walls, or dirty caulking smeared around the kitchen sink, or having to wash bedding or scrub bathrooms. Either Charmas Landmark should be upgraded, or the price should be lowered by half. We have made 25 trips to the Outer Banks and we do not have unreal expectations. We are currently staying in this house for the upcoming week. We all have to depend on the property management company to portray the property correctly and set the right price. In this case Midgett has failed us mightily. read more

Adding my comments where ever I can about Midgett....Rented a house in Rodanthe from Midgett a couple weeks back. The house was not available until 6, which I understand is the guaranteed time. The house was filthy! Broken glass around the pool, table outside covered in syrup and cake, dirty kitty litter thrown under the decking right next to a sidewalk, paper towels were black after we cleaned the kitchen floor, hair in the bathrooms, hair in the downstairs freezer, broken alarm clock in the one bedroom, broken clock in the kitchen as well as the game room, broken child gate. When we called to state our concerns we were told our "standards were too high". Excuse me if I don't want to step in cat feces, broken glass and pubic hair after we dropped over $4k on a house for the week. People were rude and we will NEVER rent from them again. We recently rented what appeared to be a beautiful beachfront home , Chelsea #1, on Ocean Spray Drive in Salvo NC for five thousand dollars for the week. It was two weeks ago now, and I am still very upset about the condition of the home and the way we were treated by Jenny at Midgett Realty. The home was in deplorable condition. She admitted that our complaints were totally legitimate after they heard back from cleaning crews and inspectors that had to be sent in, but she was "Sorry" they could only give us a $300.00 discount toward a future rental with them. We felt a full days refund was in order to cover the actual loss of vacation time. We were to blame for not continuing to call with our complaints to then have things taken care of throughout the week. But why should we even have to? For five thousand a week this home should have been CLEAN. We should have been able to enjoy our vacation the minute we walked through the door. But it was filthy. While accompanying the cleaning crew and inspectors through the house, they used words such as "Nasty", "Atrociuos" and "JC, someone will be fired for this". All we wanted to do was begin our vacation after a twelve hour drive to get there. This was Sunday. The cleaners cleaned around us and certain repairs were made. On Monday exterminators had to be sent in for an issue involving the ceilings in the second level being covered in some type of insect even they couldn't identify. My husband, by no means an overweight man, fell through an Adirondack chair , exposing splinters and rusty nails. We added that chair to a pile of similar broken chairs we found in the garage. The coffee pot leaked brewed coffee and a black sludge all over the kitchen counter with each use. Dead insects of various shapes and sizes littered the window cills and floors around the beds. We could write sentences in the dust on certain light fixtures. The bedding on the beds in the children's room was covered in many large unknown stains.... There was a large brown stain on the bunk bed sheeting and dirty dishes on the floor. A smoke alarm hung eight inches from the ceiling on a live wire above the top bunk bed. My grandson hit his head on this. The dirt, grease and food residue could be scraped off walls, chairs , glass cabinets and woodwork in the kitchen. There was hair in the broken boxes of board games meant for family entertainment. While addressing some of these issues during the first three days of our trip Midgett Realty felt no responsibility in making a reasonable refund. In fact , Jenny told us they were removing this house from their rental property list but asked if we wanted a $300.00 discount on renting the same house next year. It was like a bad dream. She finally said she would refund this inadequate sum to our credit card two days after we left , on the following Monday. It was obvious she just wanted us out of her office. It was after all, her birthday that day. Forgive my sarcasm here, but I am still angry at being taken advantage of and then being treated so badly afterward. For the record, to date , no $300.00 refund has ever been made. Just further misrepresentation of what they have to offer. One more thing comes to mind- when I first spoke to Jenny about the unacceptable condition of the house she said the house cleaner had to leave early because her husband was in the hospital. So WHY did they give us the keys before someone else was sent to do the job??? And furthermore, the cleaning crew told us they couldn't clean certain things because those things would have to wait for a "deep cleaning sometime in the future". In all honesty, this house hasn't had a deep cleaning in at least a few years. Just no way to do business. I just wish I could have been one of those people on here lucky enough to have an experience with Midgett Realty I could write a positive review about. Fortunately for us our outdoor activities , when we finally got to them, we're very good. read more

Save yourself frustration and money...NEVER rent from Midgett. I was extremely disappointed with Midgett Realty's handling of renters without insurance affected by Hurricane Irene. We have rented for several years with them, however, after the way our vacation cancellation was handled, we will never again bring our business to this company. We literally could not reach our house because the road was washed away, but we get no money back, no rescheduling to an open week, nothing. We specifically did NOT buy the insurance based on the fine print in their lease which said it only covered days of mandatory evacuation and that "If at the time Tenant is to begin occupancy of the Premises, Owner/ Agent cannot provide the Premises in a fit and habitable condition or substitute a reasonably comparable property in such condition, Agent shall refund to Tenant all payments made by Tenant and still held by Agent, which shall be Tenant's sole remedy". We could've never imagined that being unable to reach your house because of a breach in the road wouldn't fall under this!! By not choosing to pay for insurance that covered many things we didn't need, we apparently signed away any right to have a house in habitable condition. I think this is blatant misrepresentation in their lease. I would have thought that an island and company that survives on tourism would have put more effort into working with its customers to come up with alternatives. For example, we had friends in the EXACT same situation with Sun Realty who were offered the same house the same week next summer at no extra cost (without having to write a letter begging our greedy homeowner). There are lots of realty companies down there with great rental houses who are willing to work with you...unfortunately for us, Midgett is not one of them. read more

We rented a home from Midgett Realty that we thought was going to be great! Upon check in the lady told us our home had not been cleaned and they would call us when it was ready but we were welcome to go sit by the pool at the house until it was available but we could not under any circumstances go in to the house, ask to use the bathroom or be in contact with the cleaning people in any way. They told us it would be cleaned and inspected by someone from Midgett before it was released to us. That was fine- no big deal. The problem came when we got the house at 545 and got in to it- it was DISGUSTING to say the least! Sticky floors, cabinets, counters and crumbs on the table. The floors had not been vacuumed either. The bed sheets were dirty and to top it off the toilet had the white paper on it like it had been cleaned but it was full of dried urine! The comfortor on one of the beds had some dried stuff on it that I refuse to talk about- YUCK! When we arrived at the home there was a maintenance man there to fix a TV- he sat the old tv out by the steps and thats where it remained the rest of our stay. When we called them NUMEROUS times they had already closed at 530! We left them messages on the emergency line and finally received a call back from someone who told us they would send someone out to look at it and take care of it in 20-30 minutes. When the young ladies showed up we asked if we were being unreasonable and they told us absolutely not that if we were they would tell us. They thought it was nasty too. They also told us there was a whole list of homes that had not been cleaned or inspected by anyone because they just didnt get to them. That is unacceptable! As the night went on there was 7 people there to clean the home- thats how nasty it was! We spoke to the property manager about the issues and we asked to be moved to another home or be given a refund and she said no she couldnt do that. She would just have them clean the one we were in. She eventually came out herself and said the only thing she could do is give us two extra hours on Saturday for checkout. We did not even get to unload our stuff or start our vacation until 930pm that evening. That was an entire evening that was lost. If you you are asking us to pay the ungodly amount of money for a home to stay in it should be clean! We entrusted you as a company to deliver a clean product. You did not! We could not understand how you could just expect us to stay in a dirty home that was still nasty even after the cleaners left and not give us a refund of some sort or move us to a clean home. This was the worst vacation I have spent in the 30 years I have been visiting the Outer Banks with my family. Midgett Realty will NEVER Have to worry about us or any one in our family renting from them again. Its just ridiculous and so disappointing! read more
