We started working with Kyle and the Hatteras Island Sound Construction team back in 2008 when we…read morepurchased our lot in Hatteras. At that point, we had no plans and very vague ideas of what we wanted to build. Kyle spent a few days showing us various homes he had built over the years, pointing our good things as well as those things he would do differently if he was building the home over again. The later proved more insightful both in that we avoided those mistakes, but also in that it showed that Kyle and the team were more than just builders; they were craftsman who were constantly working to improve their craft. We choose to work with one of the architects that Kyle recommended for the design. While we had not yet contracted with Kyle as our builder, he willingly spent countless hours with us going over the plans to make them better over several years. Kyle's knowledge of what worked in a beach home (one that needed to put up with the harsh Hatteras environment and the wear and tear of rentals), what actually made sense from a construction standpoint (he was very good at identifying those design points that were adding what might be unnecessarily high costs so we could make the right decision), and what was trending in home design (our high partition type kitchen island quickly was tossed aside for a table level island that has become the centerpiece of the upper level thanks to Kyle) was invaluable. The Hatteras Island Sound Construction team also has a number of areas where they design / build to exceed code, but are necessary to have a home stand up to the storms that are a part of life on Hatteras. We benefitted greatly from their knowledge of what works and what does not work when storms hit. We went through this process for over almost 8 years before we actually signed a contract, all the while Kyle always willing to meet and help. During the construction process, Kyle was constantly in touch with photos, updates, and most importantly, things to consider or decide on as he learned more about the home he was building. For example, our lot was in a low-lying area, so Kyle kept insisting we add more sand to build it up, something that has proven invaluable after both hurricane Matthew and Dorian. Tweaks were also suggested by the construction team for us to consider as construction progressed to make the home better and stronger. The team was constantly challenging what they were building to make sure we got the absolute best end result. They really looked at the home as a work of art and made sure it was the best. Whenever we wanted to come see progress, Kyle and his team were ready to meet and give us the grand tour. We were introduced to all of the craftsman working on the home and it was evident they had great respect for Kyle and great appreciation for his high-quality standards. Kyle also kept a meticulous worksite. Whenever we visited (sometimes unannounced), I found a clean, neat, and well-organized worksite, a somewhat small detail, but one that highlighted the attention to detail that was demanded of everyone onsite. In addition to the personal knowledge and commitment of Kyle and the Hatteras Island Sound Construction team, their network of sub-contractors is phenomenal. Not only does the Sound Construction team seem know someone that can do anything (like the artist who hand built railing posts as mini working replicas of the Hatteras Lighthouse), but every subcontractor shared the quality commitment of Sound Construction and provided design / construction tips to make the home better as they did their work. The finished product that is our Beach Home is a dream come true. We have been in the home now for three years. We stayed in rental home for over 20 years. None compare to what the Hatteras Island Sound Construction Team built for us. Our expectations have been blown out of the water. They really do make dreams come true.
