My husband and I travel to the Outer Banks yearly. For our annual trip in 2017, we brought our daughter and grandson, so we rented a unit from Midgett instead of staying in a hotel. We rented a unit in a four-unit building, 46265 Old Lighthouse Road, in Buxton. Upon entering the unit in 2017, we found it satisfactory for our needs, but the cleanliness of the unit was subpar. We spent a few hours that first day doing some cleaning and we went about the rest of our vacation. I had hoped the untidiness of the unit was due to the laziness of an employee tasked with the cleaning duties.
We traveled again to the Outer Banks in Sept. 2019 and rented the same unit from 2017. WHAT A MISTAKE! We couldn't get onto Hatteras until Wednesday, 9/11, because of the hurricane, but were able to stay at the Marriott in Kill Devil Hills the first few days. Of course, we are not blaming Midgett for the 3 days where we couldn't get onto Hatteras. Upon exiting our car in the driveway, we were rocked by the stench of trash from the trashcans that had never been emptied. When we walked into the unit itself, a blast of hot and musty-smelling air hit us. There was also a big bug on the kitchen floor in the throws of death, which I kicked outside and took a photo of. I'm afraid to identify it, as I am afraid it is a cockroach. My husband went to turn on the central air only to find out it wasn't working. We called Midgett, but only got their voicemail. I then used the chat feature on their website, chatted with a rep from Midgett and was told someone would come to fix the problem. In the meantime, we tried opening the screens on the storm doors to get a breeze flowing, but both doors were broken in such a way that one could not move the glass in order to use the screens. All but three of the windows were also without screens. Two of the windows with screens were so badly torn that they were unusable. The broken doors and screens were not because of the hurricane.
The maintenance guy (nice guy who felt bad about our situation) came and installed 2 VERY small window units. During our conversation with the maintenance man, we learned the central air in this unit had been broken for more than a week, well before the hurricane, could not be fixed and that Midgett knew this well before our scheduled visit. Needless to say, the 2 small window units were insufficient in maintaining a comfortable temperature and the bedrooms remained too hot to sleep in. Midgett allowed us, their customers, to walk into a stifling hot unit knowing the central air unit was broken and not fixable.
Things only got worse from there. The place was FILTHY! I mean FILTHY! Dried food on the dining room chairs and living room furniture, dusty furniture where I could (and did) write my name, dishwasher handle that was caked in gunk, a crack in the wall above the tub surround that had black MOLD growing from it, bathroom fan not working, refrigerator with pieces of food dried to the shelves, handle of the refrigerator covered with grease and dust, sand covering the balcony, light bulbs burnt out in the bathroom and one of the bedrooms, and an unpleasant smell that we could not find the origin of. To top it off, the icemaker, which did not work on our visit in 2017, was still not fixed. Midgett neglects this property and it is very obvious.
We decided we shouldn't and wouldn't spend our time cleaning their filth. We spent as much time as possible doing things away from the unit; time in the unit was spent with our slippers on and trying not to touch anything with our bare hands. We ate all our meals out because there was no way in h*** we would touch any of Midgett's kitchenware.
Because of the filth and 80 degree temps inside the unit, we decided to leave early. My husband spoke with someone from Midgett about our many complaints and was assured Midgett would "make it right". Bryan Fail, one of Midgett's property managers, came to the unit as we were packing up We voiced our complaints to him and he asked me to send an email regarding these issues.
The email, along with pictures, was sent upon our return home. Guess what? NOTHING! We were not even given the courtesy of a reply email. DO NOT RENT FROM MIDGETT! We certainly never will again. read more
