I went to Midas on August 23rd for two reasons: 1. A rubbing noise that the brakes had been doing for 2 days while I was driving my car (a 2013 Honda, which I had not driven for the last eight weeks and had no problems before) 2. A change of the induction, transmission and brake fluids that a previous mechanic (at Honda) had advised me to do 3 months earlier in June (but he had never mentioned the need to change the brakes). So I dropped off my car at Midas. After a while, the receptionist explained that the noise came from a problem of alignment between the pads and the rotor, that the brakes were worn and that they had to be changed quickly. I explained to him that before the 8 weeks of immobilization of my car, the problem did not exist and that the Honda guy had not advised me to change the brakes but just the fluids. The receptionist told me that this problem of alignment is explained because I do not drive enough. After changing the fluids, he gave me an estimate for the change of ALL the brakes, front and rear (pads and rotors) I took the envelope containing the bill for the fluid change and the estimate for the brakes and left the shop. I drove a few hundred meters and ... the noise was still there. I stopped to call Midas and the same receptionist told me that the only solution to stop the noise was again to change all the brakes. I opened the envelope and found a quote of $ 1458! And here is the scam number 1: this estimate included the change of the 3 fluids for which I had come for and which cost me $ 386 (induction, transmission and brake fluids). I assumed that it is part of the normal procedure when you change the brakes on a car. Later, I figured out that it is actually not. So not only Midas gave me an estimate which included useless work (changing the fluids), but also it included a work that they just did the same day and for which I paid $ 386. Crazy, no? This kind of attitude is just unbearable. Scam number 2: the next day, I called an independent repair shop to talk to them about the noise the brakes make when I drive. A mechanic replied that after not driving for several weeks, rust builds up on the brakes which causes a noise (I remember that before the 8 weeks of immobilization, I had NO problem). This is frequent and the only way to make noise disappear is to drive and drive. After several days, the noise disappears. Midas just ignore this fact, or pretended to. The conclusion is obvious: at Midas, they purposedly scam you eyes in the eyes, as they are obsessed with doing the maximum service to make the bill inflate. I am not rich and every dollar counts. I was and always am upset and angry. I could not imagine that a franchised car repair shop would abuse its customers. And I've experienced it at Midas. By the way, the first time I posted this review, Midas sent me a private message asking me to provide them with my phone number so we can discuss this issue. I did it, but they never got back to me... Why ? Because this post was temporarily removed from Yelp. Update 1 (09/09/17): I had the whole job (pads + rotors, front and rear wheels, and NO fluids change) done yesterday by an independent car repair shop on Ashland for .... $ 576 (instead of the $ 1458 asked by Midas ; even whithout the useless fluid change they wanted to do, their estimate for changing the brakes only was still twice as much: $576.92 for the independent car repair shop vs $ 981.90 at Midas). Thanks again Midas. Update 2 (09/15/2017): I eventually had a call from Midas. This is what the voice message said:'We would be glad to explain to you in details the estimate you were given on the day of your visit'. Ok. So not only was the estimate a scam (unneeded fluid changes + super expensive brakes change); in addition to this, Midas treats me as a dumb person who cannot understand how obvious the scam was and needs explanations. I am sorry, I do not need any pedagogy. I have a Master's Degree, I know how to read and even my 8 year-old son would understand that your estimate was a A-category scam. Update 3 (09/21/2017): Lie #1 : no, Midas never ever left me a second voicemail on my phone ; I just checked again 2 min. ago and there was nothing (but in addition of being dumb, I might also be deaf). Lie #2: There has never been any misunderstanding: the $1458 estimate included the flushes already performed, and when I asked the Midas mechanic about how much changing the brakes would cost, he did not say '$1458 minus the flushes we already performed', he merely said '$1458!' and I said 'Wow! Really?'. 'Yes Sir'. I imagine how hard it is for Midas to defend the undefendable, to explain the unexplainable, to justify the unjustifiable, the turn the most obvious scam in a simple 'misunderstanding', but facts are stubborn and I have a written proof (the horror estimate). And I have to notice that Midas does not comment on the huge different of price for the brake change only between them and the other car repair shop. read more

I brought my vehicle to the Clybourn location here in Chicago 6 months ago for a routine oil change and safety check. They rotated the tires too. Approximately 3 week later I went to take the right front wheel off and realized the lug nut was spinning because it was stripped. I proceeded to the nearest location at the time in Schaumburg, IL where they were able to crack off the stripped lug nut for me. Unfortunately, it took me until last month to bring my vehicle back to the Clybourn location to get the stripped lug nut fixed. To my surprise they wanted to charge me almost $200 to fix it. When I asked why they said there was no record of the visit to the Schaumburg location to break the lug nut. It was on record as another "inspection". My question is why would I bring my vehicle back 3 weeks later to a suburban location 35 miles from home for another "inspection"? That goes against any type of logic. Again, I realize I waited to bring my Fiance's car in but I was relying on her to do it and she kept putting it off. I'm not asking for a new car just to fix the part on her car that was broke by one of your locations. read more

I was told by another shop that i needed brakes, so i came to midas on clybourn because they always look busy. So i thought i would give them a try. A gentleman named Brian took my information at the desk and informed me that they would have my car checked out in about 45 minutes. He said i could help myself to some coffee or water which was nice. They also have free wifi, a little added bonus. A gentleman named Ron which i think was the manager took me out to my car and showed me my brakes. He informed me that my brakes were ok and did not need any service for at least 10,000 miles. Ron then went over a courtesy check that they do. He informed me and showed me that my serpintine belt was cracked and that i had one brake light bulb out. Ron gave me an estimate of $150 to fix both which i thought was fair so i had the work done. I am new to the area so i need someone i can trust. I felt very comfortable here especially since they brought me out to my car and showed me what was wrong with my vehicle. I will definitely be back. Thanks guys read more

So I go in to get my brakes and rotors replaced- charge is a little less than $600 dollars, well two weeks later I am stranded on the side of the road because the brake emergency chime went off. Now this isnt just a brake light warning, no this is the stop your car and don't drive it warning. Called Midas Corporation-- the icing on the cake, my car had to be towed back to the original midas at my expense. I was later told that if they determined that the error was Midas, I could submit my receipt to have the money given back to me-- anticipated wait for my money (6-8 weeks)!!! 1. Well forgive if I dont want the same folks looking at my brakes, 2. Why do I have to be responsible for a $225 tow fee ( I have a two year old- I dont have an extra $225, after just paying nearly $600 for brakes) NEVER AGAIN--- NEVER AGAIN!! read more

Had a very positive experience at the Midas repair shop on Clybourn. I had taken my car there for an exhaust problem and they were able to fix it very quickly and very nicely. The staff at the place has been very courteous and very honest about the repairs since the moment I walked inside. They walked me through the repairs they had to do on my car and didn't impress upon me the need to have other repairs done that they thought I didn't need to have done. It's very difficult for me to trust an auto repair shop purely and simply, but I have to tell you that it seems very trustworthy to me. read more

A gentleman named Ron helped me out. I came in for a oil change and decided to wait. After about 45 minutes Ron brought me out to my car to show me the estimate check. He explained to me what I could do now and what could wait. I check my records just to make sure nothing was done in the past. I decided to get the work done. It was brakes and flushes that totaled about $600. I will come back later to get the strut work done. He also offered financing which i will look into for the struts because they are a little expensive. Overall very impressed. read more

I brought my Saab here for brakes and tires. The service was fast and the technician Joe is really into Saab's, he drives a beautifully maintained one himself. I checked around and the pricing was very competitive for the brakes and they had the parts ready when I arrived for the service. The tires were much less expensive than at my warehouse club. One of my rims was damaged and they happened to have access to a replacement rim that matched identically. So I was back on the road in about two and a half hours. read more

They were all very friendly and honest, which is not always a characteristic of places where I take my cars. They inspected my car, told me what was wrong in layman's terms, and didn't attempt to convince me of any repairs I didn't need. I have been in a jam on a few occasions with flat tires and they have stayed late to help me out.
