I've walked by Mid Kitchen countless times and always thought the food looked appetizing and delicious, so I talked my family into trying it out for brunch. (It's a hard crowd who is comfortable in routine). This restaurant definitely has a few things going for it besides the aesthetically pleasing plates. Cozy atmosphere, interesting and unique menu, comfortable seating, to name some things that immediately struck me. Also taking reservations for parties of 6 or more is awesome. I get the feeling that this spot just lacks consistency. When it's good, it's probably very good and when it's not, it's squarely sub mediocre. Started off with Buffalo cauliflower and seasoned fries. Seasoned fries were tasty, cauliflower, on the other hand was just over-seasoned. Too salty, and too much vinegar in the Buffalo sauce. We don't usually get apps for brunch because it's already a lot of food typically, but we were feeling adventurous. On the main course our food was pushing room temp and just overall disappointing. We ordered crab cakes Benedict that were just a bit too off-tasting. Pancakes were in no way classic buttermilk. Much too dense, not fluffy or buttery and oddly dark. The 2 Standard breakfasts we ordered would have been better if they were hot and the eggs cooked how we wanted. Cold toast is also a bummer. Home fries were cold-ish over-fried and dry. I know breakfast/brunch on the weekend is a busy and challenging time for a restaurant but I felt like the service really fell short in relation to how not busy it was when were there. It seemed the server knew she was getting an included 20% gratuity because we were 6 people (totally aware that this has been standard practice for ages) so she didn't bother trying. We had to ask for far too many things that should be automatic to the point that our server was clearly annoyed and just kind of dropped them on the table. One pat of butter for an entire table, one container of creamer for coffee are things that stick out. Like I said, seems to me this place has a good even great days based on reviews. Food was just okay. I had the avocado toast and my toast was very hard. We both had an ice tea and it was $4.50 a glass. I'm talking just plain ice tea! Service was not good at all and there was hardly anyone there. It took a while for the food, which I understand, but it took a long time just to get our tea. The server never came back to refill our expensive tea and they never asked about the food. It's a quaint place and food was okay but Don't order ice tea and plan on being there a while. read more

Really cute brunch addition to Evanston. As someone who's been here for 5+ years, this was a welcome new spot for breakfast/brunch and catching up intimately with friends. Not a ton of seats, but a cozy environment with cute and modern decor. The tea selections are pretty good, and coffee is good as well. I've gotten the Shakshuka and the Chicken and Waffle in the past, both really tasty and flavorful. My friend got the specialty French toast, which was the Hot Chocolate French toast. She said that it was delicious! The servings aren't the biggest and it is on the pricier side, but I would say it's pretty typical for Evanston and the quality of the food is worth its price. Had high hopes for shakshuka but it wasn't amazing - there was too much tomato sauce and less eggs - had only 2 eggs on top when should have had 4! French fries were decent. Mid Kitchen was an impromptu stop for us after a nice workout. I wanted to eat something not too light but not too heavy...some where in the mid.....wait! Makes sense now, Mid Kitchen...middle....basically you can fit something on the menu that's right for you! Hahahaha. I just made that connection. Anyway, we decided to sit outside and enjoy what's left of the weather. Our server seemed half awake. Good thing we didn't have much questions! I tried the vegan chicken and waffles. Oh my gosh loooovvvveeeddd this place! It's kinda tucked away in the corner so it's a little hard to spot but it's so good! First off super cute and fresh! It's got almost a clean French feel but with a mix of food varieties. They offered toasts and Benedict's, as well as some Mediterranean options. I ordered a shakshuka, which is poached eggs in a tomato sauce sorta thing. To be honest I've had better shakshukas in my life but this one was still pretty yum with the toast. They also had a lot of different Kombucha flavors. Over all a fun, but a bit pricey food experience. The room itself is pretty tiny so I wouldn't come with a large group. 4/5 people at the max. I really wanted to like this place as it had vegetarian options, however I was very disappointed in both the service and food. The location is nice and the restaurant is a pretty small. Parking was easy to find, plenty of street parking. We were seated almost immediately as there were only 5 other groups there on a Sunday afternoon. The menu had great options, although there wasn't a drink menu. So we asked the waitress and she gave us a piece of paper with a list of drinks on them. Nothing too fancy on the drinks menu, so we stuck with water. Also, no hot chocolate, which was a bummer. Service was okay, felt kind of rushed as the waitress didn't give us much time to look at the menu. We ended up ordering the golden bowl and tofu scramble. The tofu scramble comes with two ingredients so we got bell peppers and spinach with a side of home fries, which are just breakfast potatoes. We didn't want potatoes so they offered to sub for sourdough bread. When the food arrived, the scramble was really small. It wasn't your traditional tofu scramble. It was literally bell peppers, spinach with cubed tofu. The waitress gave us potatoes instead of our bread, so we let her know and provided us with the bread after. The tofu scramble and potatoes had so much salt, I thought I ate a bucket of salt. When the waitress came around to ask how our food was, we told her that it was super salty and she just looked at us and walked away. This was disappointing. The golden bowl was pretty good, although it was super cold and the fruits in there were still frozen, not even my sensodyne toothpaste stood a chance. We were still hungry after those two dishes, but didn't want to take a chance on the other food options, so we just paid and left. Overall, they definitely need to work on their customer services skills. Menu looks delicious, but the food is nothing special. Save your time, money, and risk for high blood pressure and go somewhere else. read more

Stumbled upon this cafe and we were so glad we did! The tofu satay wrap was delicious and the potatoes were done perfectly with a crispy outside and a soft inside. Good food but we were there a couple of hours and not once did anyone offer to refill our waters. So just one water that whole time. They also add $2 for each additional vegetable you add, which kind of sucks that there's not more included within the egg dishes. When all was said and done, my breakfast wrap and hot tea came out to $23, not including tip. The wrap was delicious but not worth $20+, at least for me and my middle class income. Finally, it's a small place we discovered, and it was very warm / felt like poor ventilation (maybe something from just that day?). Definitely a type of place, if you choose to sit indoors and every table is full, that you feel you're at risk of catching something floating in the air :/ Not sure if I would come back, maybe a once a year type of place, and would definitely prefer outdoor seating on a cool day next time. read more

Since it's a new year and we are all inspired to be in the health kick, this place opened up just in time as I contemplate going vegan My friend, who has also been on-and-off on the vegan wagon, and I went here for brunch. First impression, it was cute but small. Perhaps, it's expected in the Evanston neighborhood, I just wished they had more of a waiting area because it was so awkward standing there right next to people eating and as people leave. It was an awkward dancing around for everyone involved. Anyways, we were seated right away which is a relief! Their menu has variety and great selection. I've never been so excited and hungry to try healthy food like their menu We had the Buffalo cauliflower, I expected like mashed cauliflower but they actually served it in florets which my friend pointed out as preferred to know it's fresh! The breading was fantastic because it wasn't greasy and you can really taste the spices without putting your mouth on fire. I think what I really liked about their food is I had such a different expectations for my meal but even though it didn't present the way I expected, it seems like they gave me something better and exactly what I needed. Great location, great staff, great interior, great food. Loved this experience. I went basic and ordered the avocado toast, nothing crazy but tasted really good. My boyfriend ordered the buffalo chicken wrap and it tasted great too. I was also really suprised with the fries that we ordered. They were not your normal McDonald's type fries. I'm pretty sure they had some type of garlic seasoning and were really thin but tasted absolutely great. Win definitely. The staff was super kind and refilled our waters when needed to and were really friendly. The inside is so pretty and clean. I love the chalk board addition and the art on it is super cute. I also really liked the location being in downtown Evanston. Overall a very cute place for brunch that I definitely would recommend to try out! read more

We loved the menu, so many great choices, even as pescatarians we felt that we could go back several times without repeating a meal (a rarity at even some of our favorite spots). That being said, perhaps we had too high of hopes after reading the menu and reviews. There were 7 of us in the group and we each ordered something different. Everything tasted "good" but, unfortunately , there were few standout dishes, my opinion...my family might disagree. We were graced with an olive tapenade amuse bouchée, and it was good, again, not great. Most of the meals came out at the same time while 2 of us were left waiting for ours, not terribly long but long enough that after a while 1 in the group asked where our meals were. I think the service and how slow it is is the biggest glitch in what otherwise has great potential as a good restaurant. I believe they have a lot of kinks to work out and I do look forward to giving it another try. The actual bill has 1+ and 1-. We waited an exceedingly long time and we were never given our bill so finally I just handed the waiter (possibly the owner) my credit card. He came back with the total bill, not itemized. I really like an itemized bill so that I can double check if it's correct. I did like that it included 3 options of percentages for tips and what the total should be with the selected option. Definitely not for $13. The buffalo cauliflower was extremely soggy. To top it off, I call in to ask the chef about the dairy in the "homemade ranch" and he scoffed at me and was pretty rude. First time here and I feel this is one of the best places to have breakfast in Chicago/Evanston! We had a party of 11 and the staff was very patient and accommodating and so sweet and friendly. It was for my daughters bday. The food was great. We have vegetarians in our family and the menu had something for everyone, even kids. (ALSO MIMOSAS) The service and kitchen didn't slow down just because there was a rush, they cranked out everyone's food in time. The Avocado toast was amazing I ate it so fast I couldn't even take a picture but I took one of this filler cake masquerading as a crab cake. It is all filler very very little crab meat. The only good thing I can say is at least it's real crab meat and not crab with a K like most Chicago restaurants. But 16 dollars no that's way to much!
