I am a non-swimmer and terrified of water. My boyfriend really wanted to surf during our vacation. We called one day before and they accommodated us. We lucked out and got a lesson with Micah. There weren't other students so it was like a private lesson. Micah is the best!!!! He sensed all my fears and was extremely patient and calming. He basically paddled out for me and sent me off on all waves, and rode side by side on the wave, even holding my board so I could stay balanced. We had almost 2 hrs with him. My boys (two sons and two nephews, ages 6,7,9 and 9) had a BLAST with Mickey today! It was their first time trying surfing and they were all able to stand up multiple times during the lesson! Micah is the best! My daughter and I went for surfing lessons I found Micah through Yelp and saw his photos and reading the amazing reviews. We had the best time! My daughter loved surfing for the first time ever. Surfing in Waikiki was simply spectacular and Micah made this such a wonderful experience that we will always remember. Micah had my daughter standing up on the surfboard right away and also had her on his shoulders as they rode the waves all the way in - I've never seen her having so much fun! My kids wanted to take surf lessons while we were in Hawaii - I wasn't as sure. But after speaking with Micah (Mickey) by phone - he was nice but more importantly knowledgeable - I decided to book. Best decision this trip. The kids started to change their minds the minute we left the hotel. Two minutes with Micah and I saw them visibly relax. He started off with detailed instructions on the beach - then took them out when they were ready. They had a blast. My daughter said it was like a community out there. There were other surf instructors out there and they all looked out for each other and each other's students. They came back happy and much more confident. Micah was amazing! This was my second time "surfing", well pretty much my first since my first time was a bust. I decided to try out the private lessons with the star beachboys and got Micah. That was the best decision I made during my time in Waikiki! You are guaranteed to catch some waves. I have no experience at all and he was great. I even did better than my boyfriend who thought he would be okay by going off of youtube videos...nope. I would definitely recommend taking lessons from Micah. We didn't think we would be able to stand up on the boards as total newbies to surfing - but Micah got us up there! Great experience. I signed up last minute for a class and Mickey shot me a text letting me know I had a spot. All in all this was not only a class on the fundamentals of how to surf but a greater discussion on the water, waves, customs and courtesies, and reading the pyramid. If you have an hour or two and want a good workout and lesson on surfing or even an opportunity to polish up on skills, I would highly recommend working with Mickey. Mickey was absolutely amazing. He took my family out for our first time trying surfing and all six of us couldn't have had a better time. My youngest went tandem with him, doing tricks and having a grand time. My other kids all were a bit timid at first and he made them all feel safe and confident. Every one of us caught quite a few waves and by the end we were even picking and paddling for our own without help. If I could give 0 stars I would! Must say we never actually surfed with Mickey but that was because the communication and customer service was horrible! We asked for surfing on one day at 8am and was told to text to confirm, which we did. We never got a response but hoped for the best and was at the beach by 7:50am. Mickey called us at 8:30am and apologized and we really wanted to surf so we booked and confirmed a lesson for the next day at 9am. We were told to watch a video in a text but never received any video even when we asked about it. When we arrived at the meeting point by 8:30am we waited and waited and waited!! Someone told us Mickey was in the water and by 9:30am we had wasted yet another day waiting around for Mickey. This ruined many of our plans for our last days as we lost two mornings that we could have spent exploring new places around the island. This was a terrible experience!! RESPONSE: We did get a confirmation message on the second day and it was you that offered that time and said it worked for you (both times, although we didn't get the confirmation the first day) We also texted but were the ones to never get a response from you. Fortunately we had an amazing lesson with the Ohana Surf Project since they had an opening. You are more than welcome to pay for that. You have my number. read more

My son and I had a first-time surf lesson with Micah over 2 years ago in Waikiki. It was fantastic, we were both up on the long boards immediately. Micah did a ton of the work, towing us out into the waves so we could save energy to surf back in. He's a wonderful teacher, full of advice and encouragement. My boyfriend and I surfed for the first time this morning with Mikey. We had a great experience! We were able to arrange lessons for just the two of us, which turned out to be a great decision. They were incredibly reasonably priced. With his help we were standing up on our first wave, and it definitely gave me the confidence to go out again. Mickey was great! My husband and I were on our honeymoon at Waikiki, and saw his flyer. I've tried a few lessons in SF, came to Honolulu to learn surfing. Most of surf school in Waikiki treat you like a tourist- someone who will take photos of them surfing and never come back. However, Micah was the best of all! He is a real teacher who've been surfing for 36 years and knows how to teach. He is very knowledgable, super friendly- dropping precious words of wisdom along the way. I literally learned a life lesson from him through surfing believe it or not. :-) I took his class once and signed up for 3 more. Now I can catch my own wave, paddle and surf! Came back to hawaii for family circumstances three times this year. Each time my son (7 year old) and my husband would get lessons every time by a different instructor. We must have tried at least 5 different instructors, if not more. Mickey is great with adults and kids, super great with kids and safe. He knows his stuff and really teaches surfing, not just doing tandem with the kids all the time. Our most recent trip was one month here and we had lessons with him at least ten times. Took a semi private lesson this morning with Micah with a friend and it was awesome! He was a great instructor and made us feel very comfortable, safe, and confident and had both of us surfing newbies up and riding waves. The instructors are true, authentic, LOCAL surfers. Patient and as hands on as can be. Mickey, Sparkey and JP taught my 5, 6 and 7 year olds how not only to surf but to feel comfortable and safe out in the ocean. The instructors are amazing surfers and surf instructors, great with children and just as humble and kind as can be. Because we have been fortunate enough to be out on Oahu for a month (we drive from Kailua to Waikiki for the lessons), the children have been out surfing with Mickey and the guys quite a few times already. By their third lesson, my 7 year old son and 6 year old daughter were on their own boards, with an instructor riding right next to them. The children wake up every morning asking if they can go surfing with Mickey/Sparkey/JP. Our children will truly miss surfing with the guys. We may have to try to get them out to the Pacific Palisades to teach from time to time, maybe set up a Mickeys Surf Pop Up School in Southern Cal... read more

Our son along with his friends had a great time. They are 12 years old and all beginners at surfing. Of course as parents we were quite nervous to let them out on the rough ocean. Micah has a great way with kids and made sure they were all safe. Teaching them on dry land first and giving explicit instructions made it easy when they went out on the surf. Also, he made it fun and got them listening which is sometimes difficult with boys. The big advantage is that he keeps the group small so that you have more individual attention. I used to surf once or twice a week when lived on Oahu over 10 years ago. I was never very good but always enjoyed it. Now, living on the Mainland, I hardly ever get out on a board so I went for a lesson and I'm so glad I did! Micah put me through the paces on the beach where I learned better ways to push myself up on the board. Out in the water, he stayed right with me to coach and instruct on an array of ways to improve. The single best experience of my life! I'm 44 and grew up in San Francisco. I grew up near Ocean Beach and always wanted to learn how to surf but too scared Bc of the undertow and cold. It was my 1st time to Hawaii and wanted to do something I've never done before but always wanted to. That's when I saw Micah's advertisement for surf lessons. It was a sign for me to take a chance. I was a nervous ball of crazy when I got to the beach to meet up w/Micah. He was immediately friendly and reassuring. The lesson was only an hour. He fitted me with the correct size board, we were taught on the board on sand how to paddle/pop up onto the board. We did that several times and then we hit the water. Thinking too much was my biggest enemy. But, each time Micah was right there to encourage me back on the board with his constructive criticisms and he would demonstrate again how to do what was needed. After the hour, I was determined to conquer the waves! I booked another lesson the next morning. Micah added teaching turns. Popping up on my knees just didn't feel natural. I told Micah I wanted to spring up on my feet and he said go for it. And, let me tell you I was surfing! Truly surfing after that point. The turtles were out there as my guardian angels swimming inches away from me. There's no other high than being able to be out in the water and surfing a beautiful wave that traveled from Tahiti. Micah's not only a thorough teacher with technique, but he's got so much information about Hawaii. There's no need to take a tour bus to learn about Hawaii. Just book a surf lesson with Micah and it's a 2 for 1!! You can tell when a person loves what they do & Micah totally loves what he does. This was the best experience learning to surf with Micah! We have never been surfing so this was our first time trying it out. Micah made us all feel very comfortable and provided us with great surf boards (not the cheap ones that give you rash). He gave great instruction to us on the beach first before going into the water. He took us out to catch waves and all of us were able to stand up and surf some waves. He finds the waves for you so all you have to do is focus on catching the wave and getting up on the board. Makes you feel really comfortable and safe. He was great with my two boys aged 9 and 11 years old. Highly recommend taking your surf lessons from him. An amazing teacher and best prices in Waikiki! If you want to learn to surf in Waikiki Beach I highly recommend that you take a lesson (or two or three) with Mickey (Micah). With Mickey's expert and clear instruction I was surfing the waves on my first lesson. He uses great analogies to help new surfers understand the sport and the rhythm of the waves. Mickey treats the ocean as his office and has great reverence for the waves. When I got up and rode a wave Mickey was cheering with a beaming smile as I paddled back to catch the next wave. When I missed the wave or lost my balance he was incredibly encouraging and accurately pointed out why I missed the wave and what I had done well.
