When our surf instructor became unavailable, we asked for recommendations and were referred to Mickey's, which came highly recommended. We reached out via text, and Mickey responded promptly the same day. Although he was not available for our session, we had the opportunity to observe him teaching two children, likely around 8-9 years old, and were very impressed. Found Mickey's surf school on Yelp. I texted him for availability after researching a bunch of other schools. I wanted my two kids to have semi private lessons but all the other schools required kids to be over 13 for semi private lessons. We texted back and forth a few times before we settled on a date and time that worked for everyone. It was a busy week since we were there Thanksgiving week. We paid via PayPal and met on Waikiki beach. He was a bit late since he had trouble finding parking. Mickey had the kids practice some moves on land and wax the boards before paddling out. 90 minutes for $100 each student plus $30 for videos. He paddled them forward with the waves and told them when to stand. The kids had a blast. The videos from his go pro were amazing! A totally rad experience that the kids will remember forever. I've taken a few lessons from Micah, and he's fantastic. He gives clear instruction about safety before heading into the water, makes sure you have foundational knowledge about where you should be on the board and about how to "pop" up (in my case, step up), and then helps you put it into practice on the waves. Emphasis on the swimming technique (90% of surfing is swimming on your board!), where you want to be in the water on a given day, and wave-spotting / timing - all things that set me up to catch waves by myself later in the trip! He booked my 90 minute private lesson last minute and took the time to learn my current physical activity regimen and to teach me on the beach how to stand up on the board in a way that worked for me and my own capabilities. Once we got in the water, he taught me about how to judge good waves, surfer etiquette, and was the most popular person in the water! He paddled me out each time so I didn't get tired too soon. It is impossible to put into words how awesome Mickey is, but I'm going to try. It's been a lifelong dream of mine to learn to surf. I booked my first trip to Hawaii knowing that if I caught only a single wave the entire trip would be a success. With how eager I was to try surfing, I spent hours researching the different options for lessons. It became clear to me that Mickey was far and away the best option for a fun, educational, and personalized experience. I dialed up Mickey the night before my flight left. We exchanged a few details via text, and he booked me for a private lesson the morning after I arrived in Waikiki. Mickey sent over some video tutorials for me to practice, and he stressed the importance of practicing the movements, not just watching the videos. They were short and super helpful. We met up the next morning on the beach, and had some great conversation. Before we went in the water, Mickey had me practice some movements on shore, and gave me some pointers on my form. He let me know to keep practicing while he went to grab the boards. The attention to detail on Mickey's part was much appreciated. Having something to practice while he secured the board ensured that not a moment of the lesson was wasted. Once we hit the water, the fun really began. Mickey helps you get started on your first few waves, but his goal is to have you graduate to self-sufficiency. With his assistance (thanks for the push, Mickey!), I actually caught the first wave I tried on. What an exhilarating experience! The comfortable learning environment Mickey created made it easy to see success, because I wasn't scared of failure. We spent the next two hours on the water, catching some waves, chatting, and wiping out. Even when I was bailing, it was a ton of fun. There can be a lot of downtime between waves, but Mickey effortlessly filled that time with good educational points, and good conversation. He would point out other surfers in the water and note what they did right and what they could improve on, which helped me to have a fuller understanding of my own progress. We went back to shore as the lesson concluded. Mickey uploaded the videos he had taken on his GoPro to my phone while we chatted. He let me know that he thought I made enough progress to go out on my own another day. While I'm certainly not a pro surfer after one lesson, and I'll absolutely take more lessons in the future (hopefully from Mickey), it felt really good that Mickey gave me the encouragement to progress on my own instead of trying to automatically upsell me into another lesson. As we wrapped up, Mickey's next students were arriving (a mother and her two pre-teen sons). Mickey was just as excited to work with them as he was to work with me. It's clear that he just genuinely loves imparting his knowledge and love of surfing to people from all walks of life. As someone who is not athletic, has never done an organized sport, and can barely tread water, take it from me that Mickey is hands down THE BEST surf instructor around. I would trust both of my kids lives in his hands (and I plan to have them do surf lessons with him next time we visit). I only had time to do 1 one-on-one lesson, and I was able to catch several waves, even a few by myself! From the start, Mickey will set you up for success by teaching you exactly where you need to be on the board, how to pop up so that you're correctly positioned, etc. By making sure you're doing this all correctly from the get go, he ensures that you'll have the best surf experience during the lesson and also going forward. I had actually booked a groupon lesson before, but after hearing bad feedback from a friend who bought the same groupon, and after watching the lessons in person (total trainwrecks... none of the students learned proper technique and they all fell off their boards after 2 seconds) I cancelled it and immediately booked with Mickey instead. I was able to quickly schedule a surf lesson with Mickey over the phone within a few minutes. He was able to accommodate my schedule and everything was worked out over text afterwards. I didn't bring my phone to the lesson because I was afraid of losing it but when we were there, there was someone watching his things during the lesson! Or text Mickey to ask if there will be someone there to watch his and your things. I did a semi private lesson for two people for 90 minutes. The lesson consisted of some practice on how to stand on the board on the beach and the majority of the time, we were in the water. Mickey obviously seems to know almost everyone that is on the beach you can see him mingling with folks near his umbrella and in the water. Overall I had a great time with my boyfriend! I am the kind of person that is used to a lot of verbal instructions and Mickey's teaching style is more of learning by doing. I was a little afraid at first but quickly realized that I just had to get in the water to really learn how to surf. When catching waves, Mickey took time helping me get up on the board by grabbing my arm or pushing my board forward with a wave because I wasn't a great swimmer. He didn't have to physically help my boyfriend as much and instead rode waves with him and guided my boyfriend verbally the whole time. TIP wear a shirt if you are a guy, my boyfriend got a little bit of chafing on his chest from the board (completely normal). I had some scrapes on my elbows and knees but nothing major. Mickey really helped my boyfriend and I to feel confident to surf on our own afterwards. He also put in a lot of effort to help my boyfriend and I get a picture of us riding the same wave which I really appreciated. After the lesson he connected with me over Line to send us our videos! I am so impressed with the amount of effort he puts into his lessons and you can tell that he really loves what he's doing. I don't think I would've had as great as an experience with any other instructor, would highly recommend! One thing I would change is I would've scheduled the lesson earlier and spent some of our vacation days practicing! I was a little worried as my younger daughter is not a very strong swimmer, but after watching for a few minutes, I felt completely confident in her safety. Mickey is an amazing instructor! He takes his time explaining everything so well and making sure you understand what you're doing before you get out in the water. TL;DR: Best class ever. Use the website to book early and make sure he is there when you want to take the class. Call him if you can't find him. Just came back from taking a class with Mickey. I've taken classes before, in Australia, but this class with Mickey was hands down the best. If you come with 2-4 friends, you can get a semi-private lesson for $50 a person for an hour in the water (you can rent the board for longer afterwards for $5/hour). This is definitely worth it, as some of the other stands were charging $75 for an hour in the water of instruction and an hour by yourself. Just a few tips though: 1. Get a rash guard. My nips were chafed like no other. 2. Try to make a reservation on his website, or call him. He is pretty hard to find. He has some kind of association with Star Beach Boys, but there are so many of them, it isn't easy to figure out which one is him. 3. Someone is taking pictures of you while you're surfing, which you can later purchase at an outrageous price. (Someone from Star). We actually were going to purchase them, but the person was EXTREMELY rude, and we changed our minds. We're not holding it against Mickey, since it was definitely not his fault, but the pics were sick, and they just lost out. Make sure you're smiling when you're on your board! Moving on to the actual lesson, Mickey starts off with a demo on land and makes sure that you can pop up on your board before going out to the water and doesn't start time until you're actually on water. When we actually got out onto the water, he took the time to make sure that we landed each wave. Having a three person rotation for us was perfect cause by the time we paddled back to him, my other two friends were already on the waves, so it was pretty much the same as taking a private class. After he saw that we got the hang of it, he let us try to get the waves ourselves, by being next to us, but not pushing us into the wave. No matter what though, he was always gently coaching us, helping us improve our forms etc. I probably caught 15 waves with Mickey's help, and another 15 waves with just his coaching.
