We went out with Tristan for a private surf lesson for 3. He met all of us where our skill level and comfort was at! My son (4.5) had surfed before but Tristan got him on the board alone for a couple of waves, and was understanding when his stamina ran out an hour in. My daughter (2.5) was great on land, but hated the waves once in the water, but she was never pressured. I'm an experienced surfer but only get out about once a year so Tristan was able to help me get that muscle memory back, and was patient when I took breaks to check on my kids (and husband! They weren't alone). Even my husband who vowed never to surf again said he'll try it next time with these guys! Would definitely recommend for anyone learning to surf on the north shore! read more

My 9-year-old daughter and I took surf lessons with Jon and Mike, and it was definitely a highlight of our trip. Jon was incredibly patient with my first-timer daughter, and she gained confidence and improved with every wave. Back again on the island after waaay too long away and immediately reached out to Mike to book another lesson for the boys, now ages 10 and 13. Mike's brother, Andy met us at the same location and did a quick refresh with the boys before getting them back out on the waves for another amazing session. As a beginner but aspiring surfer, Mike was the perfect instructor. I went out with him twice over the course of my week in Oahu and each time the entire experience (location, board, focus areas) was customized to match my skill-level and goals. Mike instructed and gave a lot of great advice, but also gave me the autonomy to make mistakes (safely) so I could learn from them. Kids wanted to surf while in Hawaii and thanks to all these Yelp reviews we chose 808. Hugo was our instructor and did a fabulous job with the group. 2 of them surfed before and the other 2 it was there first time. Hugo breaks down the steps in clear and simple fashion that all of them were able to get up within the first few attempts. As their confidence grew they stayed on longer and longer riding the waves. They meet you at local beach spot, bring all the gear. Parking was easy and there's a restroom open to the public, which is nice and convenient. They provide the rash guard and water shoes as it's the bottom of the ocean is rocky. The water is about 4-5 feet deep. We had decent winds so the kids were able to surf, though something tells me 808 would pick beach spots suitable for learning based on the weather conditions. Hugo was friendly, supportive and fun! Our experience with 808 Surf School was fun and memorable. It was our first time. We signed up as a family including our child who just turned 4 and had the best time in our entire trip! They gave a great deal for the 3 of us--having 2 instructors for 2 hours (Mike was tandem surfing with our daughter). We wouldn't get such deal elsewhere. Others won't even accept kids 5 and below. They brought us to such a beautiful beach. The water was shallow, perfect for kids, and rocky but they provide water shoes and rash guard for protection. Mike is a pro with kids! He was surfing with his baby when we got to the area. We were worried our kid won't like it but after their first ride, she already felt very comfortable and was enjoying a lot. Will was patient, cool and a funny instructor! He will give his honest opinion for you to get better at it which was very nice. We got along quickly as he and Mike were both friendly and great guys. We totally recommend 808 to everyone especially to families with younger kids. They are the best people to teach surfing, plus, they are in north shore--not crowded and have amazing views. Mahalo! Last day on Oahu, looking to take a private lesson in the famed north shore. On a whim, not thinking they'd have space, I called. Mike immediately texted me back. I told him where I was, and he scheduled a class with plenty of time for me to get there without hurrying. He texted me my instructor "Heri's" number, and before I got there Hari called, let me know where to meet him and what his car looked like. Heri, was a consummate professional, he took time to ask me about my experience, went over th safety precautions and we were off. From the moment we hit the water I knew I was in good hands. Heri, was able to help me achieve the things I was looking for this lesson. Having taken lessons before, I was looking to feel more comfortable reading the waves and catching them on my own. I was looking to feel more confident so I can be comfortable renting a board and surfing in my own. I am not a very confident swimmer nor extremely coordinated, but somehow Mike made surfing so easy and so natural that I was able to stand up and ride some waves! I went for a semi-private lesson in a group of 3 and we each got plenty of surfing time. He takes you to a beach that has lots of sandy bottom and is shallow enough so you can stand up. He is very responsive, extremely professional and just an amazing instructor. He provided rashguards and shoe sizes for all of us, in addition to well-conditioned surfing boards. My 17 year old did a 2 hour 1-on-1 lesson with Hugo and it was probably my son's most memorable experience of our 2 week trip in Hawaii. He just LOVED it. Great communication, we texted what we were interested in and they told us to meet at Chun's Reef which turned out to be the perfect place. Mike is awesome and his surf lessons are worth it! We booked a 2 hour private lesson and he communicated the day before about the best time and place to meet with very clear instructions. He picked the best beach based on safest surf conditions and least crowded. It was easy to find Mike the morning of the lesson and get ready. He provided a long sleeve rash guard to use (for warmth in the water and sun protection) since we didn't have our own. He recommended sunscreen only on the back of your legs, otherwise it would impact the surfboard's wax and your grip. Mike's on-land steps were easy to follow and remember. Within minutes we were ready to hit the water. His safety reminders were pertinent and important. Once we got in the water, it was definitely a work out to paddle the board out - if I had known this ahead of time, I might have swam some laps at the gym's pool or worked out my shoulders more! Ha ha. Overall, the experience was fantastic. The beach was beautiful and basically empty - VERY different than the scene down on Waikiki beach. The cost was a great value - it was about the same cost as places down in Waikiki but for double the time (2 hours instead of 1 hour). After the lesson, Mike offered us some great suggestions of hikes and restaurants to check out in the area while we were there. We tried out his suggestions and loved everything. Thanks Mike! We'll see you again next time we're in Oahu! TIP 1: don't eat breakfast too close, the pressure on your stomach when paddling the board (and swallowing some salt water from the waves hitting you) doesn't help your breakfast want to stay down. TIP 2: if you get motion sick, take Dramamine ahead of time. I get motion sick in the car, on planes, on boats in rough water. I did not anticipate getting motion sick on the surf board but paddling and not being able to see a solid horizon ahead of me caused me to become pretty sick. Mike was very concerned about how I was feeling and checked in often, I really appreciated that. He did help me catch a wave (which was awesome!) but I chose to head back to shore after that one because I was feeling so ill. read more
