Hands down the best surf instructor in Hawaii for any level of surfer. Buttons is a legend and completely made surfing what it is today, however you would never know it by his down to earth approachability and attention to detail in his teaching style. When I took a lesson from him, students from other companies would come up to him and ask him for advice on their form. My lesson with him was the most memorable part of my trip, and definitely worth driving up from Waikiki. He will take you out away from the crowds of surfers and give you the attention to detail needed to improve your surfing instantly. He makes surfing simple and completely enjoyable. In addition to being the best instructor on Oahu, Buttons provides the history, philosophy, and spirituality behind surfing. He has been a professional surfer since he was 15 and popularized the 360 on the surfboard in the '70s. He has incredible stories to tell that you can't hear anywhere else. And his rates were actually lower than all the other surf schools. When you finish a lesson with Buttons, you are left feeling like a completely different person, with a strong appreciation for the sport, for the ocean, and for life. And you will have learned everything you can about surfing in a short period of time. He's amazing with small children, families, singles, pros, beginners, and everything in between. Go with Buttons, you will love your surfing experience, guaranteed!

Buttons surf school is simply the BEST!!! He has a great attitude and an excellent teaching style. By the end of my lesson today, I was catching the waves by myself and working on a little boardwalking. He even took my daughter afterwards for a tandem surf ride on 2 waves. So stoked to have met and surfed with Buttons. Don't bother with any other surf school. Buttons is who you should learn to surf from on the north shore. Looking forward to my next trip and surfing lesson.

    High Five Santa Buttons!!!

There are not enough nice words for Uncle Buttons and his Surf School. Down right one of the most personal guys out there. Along with doing his surf school, Buttons provides lessons and surfboards for AccessSurf once a month and for Mauli Ola Foundation whenever they have their surf experience days. He takes the time to teach you properly how to surf and paddle board. Our family has had the opportunity to be there when he's taken out a 9 month old baby (the cutest thing you'll ever see). Uncle Buttons is a man I trust to take not only my 10 and 9 year olds out, but my 17 month old also (if he would let mommy out of his site LOL). Buttons and his family go out of their way to make sure your experience is a good one and if you see them out and about and say hi, they will make sure to say hello. Much Mahalo for the great surf days and inspiration in being a better person.

After hearing about the madhouse of surfers learning to surf at Waikiki, I decided to buy a…read moreGroupon* and take the long drive to the north shore for lessons with Matt at Blue Rush Surf School. Unfortunately, I had to call Matt over 5 times before he finally picked up. He was very friendly when he did pick up and promised to call me back in 2 minutes. Which turned into 45 minutes. At which point I was already sleeping, since I was 6 hours ahead of Hawaii. So that turned into another few days of trying to catch Matt at the right moment to schedule a lesson. Right before Matt hung up, he asked me to call him the day before the lesson to remind him. What?? So for obvious reasons, I was worried that Matt wouldn't show up on the day of the lesson. But 24 hours had already passed since I bought the Groupon, so I was committed. We arrived at the lesson on time, but Matt wasn't there. When we called Matt, he said that he had to take care of his mom at the last minute, but was sending his friend Stephanie, who arrived soon after. (We later found out that Matt wasn't even in Hawaii, so I'm not sure why Matt needed to wait until the last minute to reveal this tidbit of information.) Well, to my surprise, Stephanie's lesson was really good and we both stood up despite the tiny waves and crappy surfboards. (My husband's board's fin was torn in half.) After we'd been in the water for an hour (we paid for a 90 minute lesson), Stephanie tried to end the lesson. We pointed out that the lesson was shorter than advertised, and she extended the lesson. It did make for an awkward 30 minutes though since Stephanie obviously did not want to be there any longer. BOTTOM LINE: I think Matt and Stephanie are both good surfers and teachers. However, they don't seem to be great business people. *If you buy the Groupon, Matt will tell you to pay him an extra $5 in cash to cover "taxes." 15% tax seems a little suspicious, and I would bet that the IRS never saw a cent of that $5.

There were a total of 4 young adults and 3 children. Matt has a very effective way of teaching how to surf (simplistic, straight forward, and NOT info-overload)..... exactly how it should be taught because everyone of us got up one their first or second wave. He went out of his way to make sure we all understood what we were doing and that the kids were safe. He is alert and always aware of his surroundings (conditions and logistics). It was a beginner lesson for both my son and me. I took a lesson on Maui 15 years ago (I won't name names, because it was so long ago), and back then it felt like my husband and I spent half an hour on the beach learning how to pop up with vague instructions a'la Paul Rudd.... Fast-forward to today; I was expecting something similar, but it was quite the opposite with Chance. During our lesson today with him, we spent a few minutes on the beach going over safety, a few more practicing standing up, and then we were in the water catching waves!
