Everything we needed was provided, so all we had to do was show up ready to learn. Lawrence gave us clear, easy-to-follow instructions that made us feel comfortable and confident in the water. We caught a ton of waves, and Lawrence was incredibly patient and encouraging throughout the lesson. He even helped my fiancée paddle out since she's much smaller, which made a huge difference and showed how attentive he is to each student's individual needs. We had so much fun and can't wait to come back for another lesson with Lawrence and the North Shore Oahu Surf School. Highly recommend!

3 words that describes Uncle Gil: Knowledgeable, Friendly, Service-oriented…read more I've surfer here and there but never seem to progress. I took an adhoc surfing lesson with Uncle Gil and ended up coming back for another lesson two days later. Uncle Gil started the lesson with basics and demo on the beach and then takes you to HIS spot for the lesson. That is like finding GOLD in Waikiki beach. He is very descriptive with his lessons, gave me pointers on every wave, and literally by the end of the lesson I was riding waves all the way to shore. He started with a large soft-top board and ended the lesson with a shorter epoxy board. Two days later, I came back for another lesson and got a 9'6'' board. I was able to progress so well and by the end of my second lesson, I felt super confident. Outside of the lesson, every time I go to the beach, Uncle Gil would say hi to me and give me pointer and really treated me like family so that is definitely why I came back. Anyone can get a surf lesson but Uncle Gil make is very memorable!

We arrived a bit late, so Chris was swift with the on land instruction so that we still had plenty of time in the water. It was both of our first times but we each made it up at least once. I am pretty afraid of the ocean but I really had a blast. It was all thanks to Chris! Chris was caring, funny and a great teacher. He gave helpful instruction and kept us feeling encouraged and excited even as the surfing got tiring. He supplies all the equipment (including a rash guard) and a lock box to keep all your personal items while out on the water. If you're looking at the Groupon Deal, I would recommend going directly through Chris' site instead. Groupon takes 1/2 half that money for itself. The other surf lesson spot on that beach charges $150 per person for a private lesson. Definitely recommend going through Kilohana Surf School with Chris. As he told us, though, the pricing isn't his main concern, he does it for the aloha. And we could tell! We felt like he took us in as friends. Thanks again, Chris! We'll definitely be back!

I'm disappointed overall because he was over 30 minutes late from our scheduled appt, he didn't tell me I would be with another student (I thought I was paying for private), and the overall session was only 40ish minutes. It said up to 90 minutes on Groupon, so I was assuming at least an hour of water time. He seems like a good guy and runs a nice family business, but unfortunately he struck me on my biggest pet peeve: ending significantly earlier than the paid time (...and being really late). I'd recommend his services only if he fixes those two areas.

I signed up for a two hour group lesson since I haven't surfed in years, and the second hour I got the pleasure of surfing 1x1 with Keoni. They do some brief on-shore instruction at the beginning and get you in the water and on waves super quickly. Then it's pretty much a revolving door of action from there on out, allowing you to ride as many sets as possible during the session. The guys clearly have a love for what they do, and I saw them helping customers from other schools in between waves, which goes to show their passion and kindness. Really enjoyed talking to both of them during and after the lesson, and grateful to have crossed paths. Highly recommend these guys!

What sets Zack apart is his methodical approach - before even entering the water, he had me sit to observe the waves and other surfers, providing valuable context through years of practice and wisdom. His teaching technique corrected several bad habits I'd picked up from previous coaches. Zach and his team made our surfing experience phenomenal…read more The communication was very prompt and detailed. My young (4 year old) son had a BLAST with Zach as his instructor. Zach did really well listening to the kiddo and showing him how to be comfortable and have fun learning to surf. My teenager cousin and I also felt like we were in capable hands and had a lot of fun. We're considering seeing if we can squeeze in a second session on this trip.
