This is something my wife has always wanted to do so once we planned our trip to Oahu to celebrate our 16th Anniversary, this was on the top of our list of things to do. As a certified yoga instructor herself, my wife would be hard to be impressed but she definitely was. Julia, the owner, was ready to go when we got there and clearly explained everything. We had a great time at yoga Kai! Our instructor was very knowledgeable, patient, and even took time at the end to take individual pictures of us in our favorite poses on the boards. I have minimal exposure to yoga and my boyfriend has never done it, and it was still a great experience. Don't need to be a Master Yogi or pro surfer to enjoy this experience! I've been doing Yoga for a while but have never been up on a Stand Up Paddle Board. I got the chance to try out Yoga Kai through ClassPass and had a lot of fun! Even though it was super rainy, we had a wonderful experience. We had a quick safety briefing to understand the parts of the paddle board. We headed out and dropped an anchor to help keep our paddle board in place. We started with slow, calm poses. They were mostly seated. As we progressed, we tried some more difficult poses to balance in. I fell in the water! Don't fear if you do! It's hard not to! I took my first SUP yoga class with Julia at Ala Moana and it was amazing. It's a great all body workout to balance on the paddle board(which was very wide and comfortable) while floating in the water and my core was engaged the whole time, which I don't always engage during yoga on land. I had no trouble following Julia's calming and thorough instructions and I never felt lost or rushed. She even took extra time to take individual pictures of everyone on their boards after class which was very thoughtful. This was the first time for me and my husband at SUP yoga. We were honestly a bit intimidated at first but it turned out to be a great experience. We are not yogis but wanted to try it since we were in Hawaii surrounded by the beautiful ocean scenery. You don't have to be athletic to do this (trust me, neither of us are coordinated or fit). They are so accommodating! We booked via classpass but wanted to attend an earlier class and they allowed it! Our instructor was Starr, super friendly! While we were doing poses, she would walk around and help adjust us and take pictures with her waterproof camera. Everything here is about relaxing and runs on Hawaii time - our 10am class started around 10:15 and ended closer to noon. I looooooved this so much. I am a huge fan of yoga already and had an annoying Charlie Horse that kept picking on me so I was ready to get loose. I just knew I was going to fall within milliseconds of being on this board, but Star (my instructor) was a patient, funny, upbeat teacher. I did finally go crashing into the ocean trying to do tree pose, but once you fall off the first time you just scurry back on. I had just recovered from a twisted ankle injury and multiple physical therapy visits, so I was genuinely surprised that I could hang on and do the poses. Once I got used to the ocean pushing my board wherever it felt like (including backwards) I was good to go. I did a bunch of beginner and inter umediate poses, and fell another handful of times. By the time I was done, my falls were more graceful (flat on my butt on the board instead of underwater) and a bunch of laughs. I would've easily done this again if I had time and hopefully with Star again. Her boyfriend/husband was super helpful and professional too, giving us a couple tips and carrying the boards. I liked those two so much I asked to take a selfie before I left. Highly recommended! read more

I absolutely cannot believe that I did not try this sooner. Yoga Kai has been on my to-do list for a LONG time! My cousin from Canada came into town for family reasons and we wanted to hang out doing fun things. I'm not a big nightlife person and she loves yoga, so she was looking into beach yoga. She spoke clearly and was a great guide, although I had trouble hearing her in some moments. Yoga on land is hard enough but yoga on a board on water? Damn... I was half scared to fall in but half wanting to - I love being in the water. Sadly I did not fall in! The equipment was provided - an anchor and a BOGA YOGA board! This experience was so much more than just a workout. I've done yoga plenty of times before but the stand up paddle board yoga at Yoga Kai left me the most relaxed I've ever been after a yoga session. Please note that I believe you have to be somewhat athletic and fit to do this. You have to be able to carry a heavy paddle board, walk with it across the sand, paddle out to a calm area of water and perform yoga moves on an unstable surface. But if you are athletic in any way do not miss an opportunity to do this! You can wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I wore a bikini but others wore workout shorts and wetsuits. Just make sure that you're comfortable stretching out and moving around in your clothes and be aware that you might possibly fall into the water. There are also lockers to keep your sandals and other belongings in while you're there. I'd highly recommend this class. It was such an unforgettable experience clearing my mind as I bobbed and swayed serenely on the water while attempting to pose gracefully. The yoga moves are doable even if you haven't practiced yoga before. The instructor also takes pictures of everyone which she posts on their Facebook page so you can get them for free. You can also ask to take pictures in specific poses or if you're with a group of people. read more

I am so happy to have found YogaKai. I purchased a class package on groupon or living social (can't remember which) a couple years ago not having ever experienced SUP Yoga. I was nervous my first class but it didn't take long after the class began for the nerves to completely dissipate and I was able to appreciate the peace that practicing on the water presents. Leah absolutely radiates kindness and she along with all the YogaKai instructors have a special way of making everyone in class feel comfortable no matter what yoga background you arrive with. They lead you with clear instructions and help guide you in connecting with yourself and the elements surrounding you. The water and wind add an extra push for you to focus on your body and find your balance but no worries! Even if you happen to fall in, the water is shallow and you just stand right up and hop back on your board! Modifications are offered for every pose so the class is truly meant for everyone. I've been in several classes where there were folks that couldn't even swim or have never been on a SUP board before. The equipment provided is top notch and after using their boards - I decided to purchase a BOGA for myself. Also, they take pictures throughout class and post them on Facebook where you can go and snag them all at no cost. I seriously have soooo many photos from Yogakai but they never get old! The photos are an added bonus especially if you're on vacation...I take everyone that visits me to a Yogakai class and they love that they can take that memory home with them in the physical form. This class is so fun! I find myself smiling throughout most of every class. It's really hard to have a bad day after starting it with Yogakai. My new favorite thing on Oahu! The ladies of yoga Kai are incredible. They scheduled me in for a last minute request for my birthday and made it a birthday I'll never forget. We did the mermaid spa which was incredible and took a stand up paddle board yoga class. The spa day was so special. I 10 out of 10 recommend. She made homemade spa treatments, a beautiful picnic and a memorable relaxing experience. The yoga was in a beautiful location and unforgettable. We can't say enough great things out our experience! We were a little sad we didn't get to meet Leah after all the wonderful things we read about her (but she was 9 months pregnant!) The teacher was great.. Lead about 45 minutes of flow for any level and 10 minutes of free play (try that headstand!) Easy to book and easy to find plus very affordable compared to hotel prices. Loved the SUP yoga in Haleiwa! We were nervous being SUP novices but were put at ease right away. Laughing a lot helped, and it wasn't nearly as difficult as we thought it would be. The paddling itself was challenging but super fun, and the best part- we were surrounded by sea turtles!! Several swam alongside us and it was totally amazing. The yoga was a struggle, but still fun and beneficial. It's way easier on solid surface vs the water! The surroundings were beautiful and serene. Will definitely do this again. read more
